Scioscia: Yankees lineup explosive even without A-Rod

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Aug 10, 2011 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Before last night’s game Angels manager Mike Scioscia was asked about the Yankees lineup without Alex Rodriguez.

“You’ve got nine boxes of TNT,” Scioscia said. “If you’re taking one away, it’s still a deep lineup. They have speed all the way through their lineup. They have power all the way through their lineup. The fact that A-Rod isn’t in there definitely changes some dynamics, but I don’t think it’s anything that (the Yankees can’t overcome). If you look at what Granderson’s done or Teixeira, Cano, Swisher to a certain extent. They’ve got Chavez now really swinging the bat well. With the team speed, there’s nothing that they’re not going to be able to absorb for a short period of time.”

Way Scioscia sees it, the key here is pitching anyway. With or without Rodriguez, the Yankees have plenty of offense as long as the pitching holds up.

“Their lineup is so deep that they absorb most of that anyway,” Scioscia said. “There aren’t many guys, especially in this park, that aren’t going to be able to take the mistake and turn it into a three-run homer. So, the premium there is to pitch well. I think their lineup is deep enough where there aren’t any obvious matchups where you go, ‘There’s no way this guy’s going to beat us, but we really feel good about the next guy.’

“There could be some things you look at as the game goes on, but it’s tough to pitch around Granderson with Teixeira there, and Teixeira with Cano there. If you put Alex Rodriguez in the middle of that, I don’t think it changes too many of those dynamics. But what it does is take a lineup that’s already deep just incredibly deep. He’s obviously a premium player in the middle of the lineup.”

He was 100% correct in his complaint, but he is an asshat. Wasn’t at all sad to see him go.

Blake, With all due respect, and I mean that. I generally like your posts. To call the Angels small market aint exactly true

Everyone says that stuff. Standard bouquet tossing by the opposing manager. He even called Russ Martin a box of TNT for crying out loud.

  7. blake August 10th, 2011 at 1:57 pm

    Tom,

Of course they aren’t….but they like to.make out like the Yanks buy every player just like the Sox do. Earlier in the year they had a poll on their broadcast that asked what the fans liked least about the Yankees……I think ” their high payroll” won.

How bad of a front office do you have to be to trade for Vernon Wells, sign Gary Matthews Jr., trade Mike Napoli to play Jeff Mathis, the list goes on.

The market stuff can be funny. I heard Einhorn complain about not being in a big market like New York once — he’s in Chicago for cryin’ out loud.

Actually the best market situations are in Boston and Philadelphia. Those are by far the biggest single team markets. I believe the Texas teams would come in third and fourth.

    —————-

The Angels have made some bad decisions lately, but they’ve also made some good ones: Turning Joe Saunders into Dan Haren, trading for Callaspo.

I think the Vernon Wells pick up was a reaction by the GM to missing out on Carl Crawford and if he had it to do over again he probably wouldn’t. That said, after the deal there were a lot of rumors that Mike Napoli and the manager weren’t getting along because Napoli wasn’t even trying to improve himself behind the plate. Essentially the GM was faced with the prospect of having three DHs (Rivera, Napoli, Abreu) and only one spot – so he moved two of them out in hopes of watching Wells turn his career around in SoCal.

No GM is going to make all the right moves.

    Arod
    Cano
    Tex
    Swisher
    Martin
    Chavez or Nunez

I know that tex is not getting down in the lineup any time soon, and i would swich Martin to ninth if chavez is playing 3B

When did Los Angeles become a small market?

  21. Gary August 10th, 2011 at 2:30 pm

Unknown or little known pitcher coming in tonight for LA. Usually gives the Yanks fits in this situation. I think this is a big game for them tonight to turn it around after three loses. I’m pretty convinced now that we won’t see a Boston fold job this year so the Yanks will have to stay tough and keep winning.

I think the real reason for the six man rotation again is for evaluation. If Nova and Hughes pitch well and Burnett does not, Burnett will be put in the pen to “work on some things”.

Let’s hope the young guys both pitch well. I definately have more confidnence in Nova than Hughes, but we shall see.

When that happens, the story won’t be that the Yankees saved $13M by trading Burnett, but rather they are paying $20M for him to pitch for someone else.

It’s silly to think that any pitching coach is going to transform Burnett into something he’s not after all this time.

If AJ was 22 or 25 even then I would say there’s room for improvement. AJ’s 34, he is what he is. A very frustrating pitcher who has the raw ability to be so much more than he is.

  44. Warning Track Power August 10th, 2011 at 3:10 pm

A.J.-I have finally admitted to myself this guy only has 2 pitches to throw.
    His change-up could be a 3rd and a brushback pitch could be a 4th pitch, but A.J.
refuses to throw anything other than the heater and curve.

    Girardi on with Mike

Says he doesn’t anticipate the 6th man rotation going much longer and they are going to iron it out very soon

Says it limits their roster flexibility too much, especially since they have A-Rod coming back and play 30 days in a row.

  46. austinmac August 10th, 2011 at 3:13 pm

For the reason you stated, if the Yankees could somehow deal Burnett it would be to the National League. Every time he pitched against the Yankees he looked unhittable.

Someone is going to the pen and it might be happening this afternoon.

    I’m laughing because I can’t believe he’s been this bad. UN-freaking-believable.

  49. austinmac August 10th, 2011 at 3:16 pm

    Warning Track,

I believe Burnett di throw a number of change ups last night or at least that what I think the 88-89 mph pitches must have been. It just doesn’t have enough speed separation from his fastball to be that effective, IMO. Plus, it was rarely a strike.

Nah….because we would have all seen how him in NY played out. Id rather have the 13 million and take my chances with AJ pitching for another team……as I’ve said though my preference is for AJ to pitch better and that never happen

  51. austinmac August 10th, 2011 at 3:18 pm

Very true. He did throw some last night, but I still am a firm believer that both he and Hughes can benefit by throwing more off-speed pitches in counts where the hitter is looking fastball.
Corey Wade throws 88-89 and that guy can throw a change-up, in boston, 3 and 2 count, bags loaded and get out of an inning with a weak pop-up.
Maybe Hughes and A.J. should ask Wade for some tips.

The only real semi-concerning thing about Mo is his declining numbers against Lefties who he used to just manhandle. His BA against has went up against lefties every year since 2008. Perhaps he should bust out the change up at some point as a weapon to help in that area…

Or he can throw the back door cutter a few more times to keep the lefties off-balance.
IMO, the back door cutter can do a lot of damage. Isn’t that the pitch that gets him the most
    called 3rd strikes???

    Mo with a change-up!! AWESOME
He might go on to save 800 games now

  55. austinmac August 10th, 2011 at 3:22 pm

    Warning Track,

I completely agree. As I watched the game last night, it was clear everyone knows when behind in the count or with three balls, he will always throw a fastball. That is not the way to pitch, but he lacks fatih in his ability to throw anything else over the plate on a consistent basis. All in all, I hate to watch him pitch. Too frustrating.

  56. blake August 10th, 2011 at 3:23 pm

Mo has a change up…..he throws it every now and then in ST…..he just never has needed it.

    Austinmac,

I’ve grown tired of trying to rationalize AJ……independent of contract he’s a good #4/5 starter and Im fine with that so long as he’s not keeping someone better (and younger ) out of the rotation……the problem is that could be already happening and its going to be even more of an issue in the future.

  60. Jeremy August 10th, 2011 at 3:28 pm

Don’t blame Larry Rothschild for A.J. being A.J. the guy can’t walk on water. People should just admit that Burnett sucks and that’s it. It’s not the pitching coach, Posada, the mound, or any other stupid excuse A.J. comes up with. A.J. is just a terrible joke of a pitcher.

  61. LockDown August 10th, 2011 at 3:28 pm

I think the real issue may not be this 6man rotation. When you look at the 30 days with a double header, you can see where a guy like Colon for example could benefit from pushed back days or a day off.

I think the real issue is that they essentially have a 24 man roster (due to Posada) and therefore can’t afford the luxury. Even with a 5man rotation, it’s going to be difficult to squeeze in Montero at this point.

  62. austinmac August 10th, 2011 at 3:31 pm

    Carlos,

I don’t doubt PNC plays bigger, but my point is Teixiera was making solid contact and not in one of his repeatedly striking out on a change up streaks.

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.
