    blake,

Also in context of the RBI totals

    Men on Base
    -AGon: 278 PA
    -Grandy: 237

    Men in Scoring
    -Agon: 168 PA
    -Grandy: 142 PA

I hate being stuck at work while they’re playing. :x

So Cervy catches two days in a row then with CC going tomorrow.

That’s fine, Russell could us the 2 days.

  4. upstate kate August 11th, 2011 at 10:34 am

It will be interesting to see if Cervelli does catch CC tomorrow. I am not buying into him being CC’s personal catcher. He certainly wont be come play off time.

  5. blake August 11th, 2011 at 10:35 am

    Lgy,

    Thanks. Grandy for MVP!

  6. tomingeorgia August 11th, 2011 at 10:36 am

    Erin,
I sympathize with you, but I love day games. I’m generally up about 5 AM, get my chores done by about 11, and have the rest of the day at liberty. Haven’t made it through a night game in quite a while, but haven’t missed an inning in the afternoon. Besides, the Yanks usually win big in daylight!

  7. Bret The Hitman August 11th, 2011 at 10:39 am

Josh Johnson is a bit of a forgotten man with his shoulder injury. But the Marlins are running out of time with him. They’re merely 2 years from losing him to free agency. Could he be our Josh Beckett?

    2012: $13.75M

    2013: $13.75M

  8. Chip August 11th, 2011 at 10:40 am

Also, while Gonzalez has a fantastic glove at 1b, Granderson plays a much more difficult position and plays it very well.

Also, at this point I think the four contenders for the award are Granderson, AGone, Pedrioa and Ellsbury so the fact that three guys are on one team might help Curtis out – not that he needs it, he truly deserves the award if he wins it.

  9. Erin August 11th, 2011 at 10:41 am

Tom-I probably shouldn’t complain because I think they’ve only lost twice this year when I’ve been at work.

    Enjoy the game :)

Probably not. Remember, the Marlins open their new stadium next year. They’re going to want to go into it with an exciting young core built around Johnson, Ramirez, Stanton and LoMo.

No day off until 8/22. By then Alex will feel settled and other lineup adjustments made. Hopefully the pitching rotation will be aligned.

  15. Irreverent Discourse August 11th, 2011 at 10:45 am

bret – more likely he would be Pavano than Beckett.

  16. upstate kate August 11th, 2011 at 10:45 am

Sandman just came on the radio…I am taking that as a good sign.
I like games that start at 7, are done by 10, and the Yankees win :)

  17. Yankee Trader August 11th, 2011 at 10:47 am

Count me in on Grandy for MVP. If it comes down to players on playoff teams, it will probably be between Granderson, Gonzalez and Ellsbury, if all 3 continue to perform well. Good chance the two RS take votes from each other.

  18. tomingeorgia August 11th, 2011 at 10:50 am

    kate,
When did we last play a three-hour game? Yeah, 7 PM starts are better than 8 PM, but I’m still nodding off by the fifth inning, and pretty useless the next day if the game runs til 11.

“Nice article on the shortcomings of ISO, and apparently AGon is the most overrated power hitter in baseball right now?”

I think you are misinterpreting that article. “Raw Power” is what was being measured, which seems to favor high power, low-ish average guys (Mark Reynolds leads the list, followed by Tex). The formula disfavors guys who get a lot of hits, which doesn’t seem to me to be that useful a thing to do.

  22. HipHipHorHay August 11th, 2011 at 10:59 am

Bret – I understand the sentiment, but hate thinking of anyone being “our Beckett.” Not only can I not stand that d****ebag, but he’s really only been good every other year. I’d consider that contract the Sux gave him to be dicey at best. Course, flags fly forever, so…

  23. Bret The Hitman August 11th, 2011 at 10:59 am

    ID,

Physically like Pavano, not mentally, right?

Do you think J. Johnson is damaged goods?

  24. Irreverent Discourse August 11th, 2011 at 10:59 am

WYH – The bottom half of the article shows players that are overrated/underrated by ISO. Maybe shortcomings wasn’t the right word… but I’m not misinterpreting anything.

  25. Irreverent Discourse August 11th, 2011 at 11:00 am

The formula disfavors guys who get a lot of hits

Then you misunderstood it, it disfavors guys that hit singles… not hits in general.

If the Yanks beat out the Red Sox for the division and Grandy keeps this up then I think he wins the MVP.

He’ll have Willie Mays like #’s from the CF position and it’ll be hard to give it to anybody else.

    Erin-

CC has stated recently that he wants to pitch every fifth day.

From the two NY Post articles i attached early this morning, it appears that a decision will be made soon, perhaps after Hughes next start, if Hughes or Burnett will be removed from the starting rotation.

    From Mark Hale’s article:

“The 24-year-old right-hander earned a win in his sixth straight decision last night, with Joe Girardi announcing before the game that Nova had secured a rotation spot. Nova beat out both A.J. Burnett and Phil Hughes whom, Girardi indicated, are battling for the final rotation spot. ”

YT, thanks for the link. So the writer believes that a factor in the decision may be that 34 year old AJ may be too immature to handle a change yet the 25 year old Hughes would have no problem with it? I hope they don’t make decision based upon who might throw the biggest tantrum. What a way to run a team. Pick the better pitcher and be done with it.

  43. G. Love August 11th, 2011 at 11:21 am

You guys are doing “you know what” into the wind if you think the media is going to give Grandy an MVP award over Gonzalez. It’s not that Grandy won’t deserve it, it’s that Gonzalez was pre-ordained as MVP before a pitch was thrown this season.

It would take a national media figure of great importance to come out, break down the numbers and show how Grandy has had the best season out of the candidates to break Gonzalez’s hold.

But you know Gammons will have an article up shortly to convince all the sportswriters who look up to him that deals with the impact on the field and off the field of Gonzalez and how he has created a new Red Sox dynasty.

If you read Gammons’ last piece he’s already discussing Gonzalez’s 3000 hit club candidacy and how some super-fan told Gammons he knows the date it will happen.

Grandy is media friendly, does a ton of charity work and is having an amazing season. If he were to win over Gonzalez it would still be one of the biggest MVP upsets in a long time.

“Then you misunderstood it, it disfavors guys that hit singles… not hits in general.”

No, you said “power hitter”, not raw power hitter, which at least to me implies different things. And since the formula is (TB-H)/H, it does disfavor guys with lots of hits, although I agree it would disfavor guys who hit a lot of singles more. However, to rank well on ISO those hitters (like AG) would have to get a lot of extra base hits as well. It’s just that the guys who have a big discrepancy between PF and ISO are getting a lot of singles and doubles too, like Gonzalez.

Johnson’s talent is off the charts, but his medical history makes AJ look like CC.

Marlins wont be sellers until mid-season 2012 at the earliest with the new ballpark.

I love the idea of Matt Kemp in RF, but he’s by far the Dodgers’ best player. Only hope of getting him would be to sign Jamie McCourt on as a minority owner and hope to get Kemp in the divorce settlement.

  52. TheStraw August 11th, 2011 at 11:26 am

Hmm, tough call on the MVP race. Bautista and AGon have better pure batting numbers, but when you lump in Granderson’s runs scored and SB, it evens up. I actually think that playing for the two heavyweight teams counts against Grandy and Agon in the MVP race, as there are so many other great players on both teams. I think Bautista wins it if the season ended right now.

The reporter who asked the question is an idiot. (S)He knows why Burnett’s spot in the rotation is safe, just as we all do – if the reporter thought Girardi was going to go on record and say “because he makes a huge amount of money and we’re not going to bury that salary in the bullpen and risk losing him mentally for the rest of his contract” then (s)he’s just dumb. All the question does is force Girardi to come up with some reason other than the obvious as to why Burnett keeps his spot or degrade one of the other guys on the team by saying he’s a worse option than AJ.

The left-hander is scheduled to start Friday at Oakland as the Texas Rangers open a 10-game road trip. Wilson is 1-2 with a 4.71 ERA in three starts against Oakland this season.

“I hate pitching there,” Wilson said. “The mound sucks. The fans suck. There are no fans there. The fans who are there are really adamant, but sometimes you’ll go there and there’s 6,000 fans. I just wish the fan base supported them a little more.”

colon better keep runners off the bases because the angels will expose cervelli.

he wasn’t that bad throwing when he came up.

between pena and girardi you’d think they would have addressed cervelli’s throwing problems a while ago.

right now cervelli is as bad as it gets at the mlb level in throwing out runners.

i really don’t see how they can go into the playoffs with him as the back up with him throwing this badly.

maybe he has a sore arm or something that girardi knows and we don’t , but something is weird that they haven’t done something about it besides having him catch sabathia which makes it easier to throw out runners.

  59. 86w183 August 11th, 2011 at 11:32 am

Chip that’s totally unfair. It’s a perfectly legitimate question and one that should be asked. Reporters often ask questions they think they know the answers to, because you want to hear it from the decision maker.

  60. G. Love August 11th, 2011 at 11:32 am

    Trader,

I think Gammons and the Boston media will make it a point to use Ellsbury to diminsh Grandy’s candidacy and improve Gonzalez’s candidacy since they’ll say that occupying the 3 spot in the Boston order for the majority of the season and driving the best offense is more important.

I also think they’ll make it a point to vote Gonzalez 1 across the board and Ellsbury 2 to insure Gonzalez wins this. As long as the writers vote Gonzalez 1 he won’t split any votes with Ellsbury.

Grandy has a shot because he’ll get the middle america votes from his Detroit days, but Gonzalez will get West Coast/East Coast votes with the exception of NY unless the writers in NY are closet Red Sox fans like Pete was.

I want our team to get their stuff together and be ready to beat those guys in the playoffs come hell or highwater.

It starts with winning the division and not giving Boston the last at bat in that joke of a ball park in the majority of their playoff games.

  65. G. Love August 11th, 2011 at 11:36 am

A walk through the MVP candidates

    Granderson: .275/.367/.579/.946. 31 HRs, 104 runs, 91 RBI, 22 SB. WAR(5.2, Fangraphs)
    Gonzalez. : .343/.408/.551/.960, 18 HRs, 78 runs, 92 RBI, 1 SB, WAR (5.1, Fangraphs)
    Ellsbury: : .314/.369/.507/.876, 19 HRs, 84 runs, 72 RBI, 31 SB, WAR (5.7, fangraphs).

Gonzalez is way ahead in avg and OBP but Granderson is stomping him or virtually tied in everything else as a CFer. He’s probably going to be a 30/30 guy and probably more like 40/30. Ellsbury actually has the highest WAR…..not sure how that’s derived unless its weighing some inaccurate defensive metric…

    ———-

It’s a horsepoop question that’s designed to do nothing other than trap the person being asked.

    Girardi’s got three choices:

    1. Say AJ doesn’t deserve a spot in the roster but his salary demands the Yankees run him out there every 5th day anyway

    2. Rip another player (like Hughes) by saying that AJ is better than other options

    3. Come off looking like a fool by trying to suggest that AJ’s having a better season than he gets credit for.

No manager (except maybe Ozzie or LaRussa) would go with options 1 or 2 so we’re left with Girardi looking like a fool.

  70. Yankee Trader August 11th, 2011 at 11:46 am

    Erin-

    Full MLBTR n Wandy Rodriguez:

There is a “growing belief” that the Astros will place Wandy Rodriguez on trade waivers this week, and also that at least one team will place a claim on the lefty according to Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com. It’s believed that at least one NL team is interested enough to risk a claim, and there may be others interested as well.

Rodriguez, 32, has more than $23MM left on his contract, and that doesn’t include his $13MM club option for 2014 that becomes a player option if traded. If a team were to claim him, the Astros could pull him back and attempt to work out a trade with the claiming team, or they could award Wandy and his entire contract to that club. Knobler says the Astros would not do the latter and would instead seek some kind of return for the southpaw.

Through 21 starts, Rodriguez has a 3.52 ERA with 7.7 K/9 and 3.0 BB/9 in 133 innings. He has allowed five or more runs in four of his last nine starts however, which doesn’t jive with his track record of strong second halves. The Yankees, Indians, and Blue Jays were among the teams with interest in Wandy before the trade deadline

If I were the Astros owner[current and new owner to be], I wouldn’t hesitate to dump that contract on the team claiming him!!

  71. 86w183 August 11th, 2011 at 11:47 am

    Yeah, claim Wondy!

The Yanks need a 7th starter… then they can assign each guy a day of the week

Chip, Girardi does have to explain why guys are in or out of the rotation when this six man fiasco ends.

It’s a tough question that Girardi probably doesn’t want to answer, but it would irresponsible of reporters covering the team not to ask why AJ/Phil stays or goes.

Chip, Girardi does have to explain why guys are in or out of the rotation when this six man fiasco ends.

It’s a tough question that Girardi probably doesn’t want to answer, but it would irresponsible of reporters covering the team not to ask why AJ/Phil stays or goes.
    ————————-

And Girardi will – at some point come up with a perfectly acceptable BS answer that has some bit of legitimacy.

Nova goes down – “Ivan has options and he’ll be back up in a week.”

Hughes goes to the pen – “Hughesie has experience pitching out of the pen; AJ doesn’t.”

    G Love
are you suggesting espn purposefully printed that article to discredit Bautista?

Am I correct that A-gon currently has 1063 hits? He is nowhere near 3000. Even if he gets 200 hits a year, which he has yet to do, it will take him 10 years to get there.

After reading about Bryce Harper’s latest meltdown I have a feeling we’re going to look back on this kid in 10 years the way we look at Milton Bradley now.

Talented player that no one wants on their team.

  79. blake August 11th, 2011 at 11:57 am

Bautista wasn’t going to win anyway…..this isn’t the CY young and they don’t give the award to guys on non playoff teams unless there aren’t any other good candiates……if you listen the media isn’t even considering Baustista in the conversation.

  80. G. Love August 11th, 2011 at 11:57 am

    Chip,

Curry is hardly a national media figure. Gammons is treated like the Pope by his peers. He even has a pointy Red Sox hat!

  81. blake August 11th, 2011 at 11:59 am

I wrote the other day that I wished 18 year old Arod was around to show Harper what a real phenom looks like.

Bautista on the Blue jays stealing signs. This accusation will be enough to keep him out of the running. From the Chicago Sun Times:

Bautista says White Sox threatened him
By Daryl Van Schouwen on August 10, 2011 10:16 PM

BALTIMORE – The White Sox were dragged into a Toronto Blue Jays controversy about sign-stealing on Wednesday when Jays slugger Jose Bautista told reporters in Toronto that an un-named Sox relief pitcher threatened him while accusing the Jays of stealing signs last season.

“He yelled at me and said, ‘We know what you and your teammates are doing. … Keep it up and someone is going to get hurt,” Bautista told the Toronto Sun. “Getting hit is one thing, telling someone you’re going to hit them is something else. What if someone gets hit in the head?”

  83. Tom in N.J. August 11th, 2011 at 12:00 pm

Gammon’s is a member of the nonexistent ‘writers wing’ of the Hall of Fame!

  84. 86w183 August 11th, 2011 at 12:02 pm

Adrian Gonzalez will be around 1,100 hits at the end of the year. At 180 hits/yr he will need 11 more seasons to reach 3,000

Doable, but silly to discuss this early

  85. cs in la August 11th, 2011 at 12:02 pm

I dont think ESPN purposely discredited Bautista, but if they weren’t absolutely 100% sure about something like that, they shouldn’t have done it. Like G. Love said, that will stick with them for a while, true or not.

  86. RadioKev August 11th, 2011 at 12:02 pm

I think Buster Olney brought up a good point about WAR, isn’t Ben Zobrist top 10 in WAR? You wouldn’t call him a top 10 player, it’s just the replacements aren’t as strong as say, 1B.

  87. Erin August 11th, 2011 at 12:02 pm

  90. Doc Iac August 11th, 2011 at 12:07 pm

i know its off topic but, today is my bday!, the yankees need to give me a win!

  91. Niblick August 11th, 2011 at 12:07 pm

Chip – it really doesn’t take much for Girardi to make himself look like a fool. A rotation controversy isn’t nessary for that; he pretty much accomplishes it daily with his game moves.

  92. blake August 11th, 2011 at 12:07 pm

You shouldn’t even talk about 3,000 hits with a player until the get to 2,500…..so much can happen and that’s a milestone that take relentless consistency for a long time.

  93. cs in la August 11th, 2011 at 12:07 pm

    G. Love, yes I agree. I heard that about Gonzalez and also almost threw up. They’re dying for their version of Derek Jeter – it’s all so very transparent and manufactured. Kind of funny too, that even though their baseball fortunes have improved the past few years, that they still feel like the second place team in every way.

  94. Wave Your Hat August 11th, 2011 at 12:07 pm

Defensive position should definitely be given weight in MVP voting. However, I don’t think defensive WAR is sufficiently accurate to base an MVP vote on aggregate WAR.

    —————-

The kid just seems to ooze “entitled.” In fairness, the only time you read about most players is when they’re acting like morons – and maybe 99% of the time he’s a great guy, kind to animals, small children and his fellow minor leaguers – but from the things that make the press the guy just seems to feel like every part of the minors, his competition, the coaches, the umps, are garbage stuck to the bottom of his cleat and not to be respected.

  96. bruceb August 11th, 2011 at 12:07 pm

I seriously hope they don’t put Hughes back in the pen but I fear they will because, of course, that’s the easy option. They know from past experience that he can perform in the later innings of a game while AJ would probably be worse as a reliever than a starter. I could see him coming in at a pressure moment and walking the bases loaded. If any team can afford to dump $33 million in salary it’s the Yankees, but what will they do with AJ for the next two years? Make him the official pie thrower?

  97. Erin August 11th, 2011 at 12:08 pm

I hope ARod has and continues to steal signs. On the field, if the catcher/pitcher are dumb enough to show their signs so that the runner(s) on 1st or 2nd can get a glimpse, that is totally fair game.
What is not fair game is when someone is stealing signs/relaying signs from the seats, luxury box, etc….

Id take Harper too…..he just got thrown out yesterday for arguing. He has gotten a little dose of humble pie in AA though…. .248/.306/.385./.691. In 31 games. This kid has been hyped as the best prospect since Arod…..Arod made it to AAA in his first year at 18 and destroyed every level on the way up.

  111. G. Love August 11th, 2011 at 12:20 pm

Stealing signs or rather giving location while being a runner on 2b is part of the game. We did it in little league.

Having a guy sit in the batter’s eye dresses in white raise his hands when a breaking ball was coming is not part of the game. If there’s even hint of truth to that it’s a disgrace that Selig calls Arod onto the carpet for playing cards and let’s this pass with nary an inquest.

Bautista is cooked for MVP this year. If writers smell smoke there’s fire and they won’t give him the award for 2/3rd’s of a season where he could have been tipped off sign wise.

As for Gammons and his 3000 hit Gonzalez mention it’s another sad desperate attempt by a senile cheerleader to make himself and the Boston fans feel better about themselves. What I don’t understand about that team is they’ve won more recent championships than us of late, were in 1st place when he wrote the article and have a good team this year yet he still needs to fantasize and prop up their ego’s with dreams of a guy they just traded for getting 3k hits in a Boston uni? His contract doesn’t even go long enough for that to happen and we all know they throw out their vets as they age and decrease in performance.

If Curtis lives up to the projections or exceeds them the rest of this season and loses convincingly to Gonzalez in the MVP race it will go down as one of Gammons’ greatest accomplishments. CF is a much hard position to play than 1b, not to mention Curtis hits triples and runs the bases like an actual athlete.

  112. Wave Your Hat August 11th, 2011 at 12:20 pm

    LGY-

AGon gets high marks for defense, but CF defense is more important than 1B defense. But, the MVP is generally awarded on Triple Crown numbers so if I weren’t a Yankee fan I’d probably vote for AGon. However, as a Yankee fan I think a vote for Granderson is perfectly defensible given how close the two are offensively on a sabremetric basis and bonus points for Granderson manning CF.

  113. J. Alfred Prufrock August 11th, 2011 at 12:20 pm
