Freddy Garcia injured

Posted by: Brian Heyman - Posted in Misc on Aug 13, 2011 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Freddy Garcia cut a finger on his pitching hand four or five days ago in a kitchen accident, according to Joe Girardi, so he has been scratched from tomorrow’s start and the decision about who to cut from the rotation will now be delayed. A.J. Burnett will take the start tomorrow, weather permitting, because the forecast sounds bad.

Freddie Garcia is no longer allowed to use kitchen tools

  2. cs in la August 13th, 2011 at 7:51 pm

Kitchen accident my ass. Is this how the Yankees deal with rotation decisions?

  3. Villa Nova-Ya August 13th, 2011 at 7:51 pm

    OMG -

I am sorry for Garcia, but this is too funny to be true!

The Yankees get to not have to make any decision. And our intrepid reporters did not know about this??????

  4. NYY fan in NH August 13th, 2011 at 7:52 pm

very interesting this crops up the day before the big decision.

  5. m August 13th, 2011 at 7:52 pm

What a great game. Nice outing from Hughes. Posada mashing the ball.

Too bad about Freddy, but this is why we had the 6-man going. I wonder if Colon will come up with a minor ailment next week? And then we’ll be up to DH in no time.

    =====================================

Maybe Freddy will use the time off to develop a new pitch…maybe he can learn the cutter. :)

  7. Niblick August 13th, 2011 at 7:53 pm

Betsy, take your own advice. You haven’t had an original thought all season.

  8. m August 13th, 2011 at 7:53 pm

    lol, so many cynics here!

  9. 108 stitches August 13th, 2011 at 7:55 pm

Why couldn’t it have been Burnett that cut his hand ? The Rays must be salivating at the thought of facing Burnett, weather permitting.

  10. Mordot11 August 13th, 2011 at 7:55 pm

This is insane. Does anyone really believe that he cut himself? I am curious how much the Yankees are paying him on the side to skip a start during a season in which, outside of CC, he has been the Yankees’ most reliable starter.

I really hope that Cashman is gone after this season. He is worse than Girardi and has managed to win one World Series with teams that he has built himself. Sorry Cash, winning with teams built by Stick doesn’t count.

  11. m August 13th, 2011 at 7:55 pm

Or is it skeptics? Oh, well. Plenty of both, I guess.

  12. mick August 13th, 2011 at 7:55 pm

4-5 days ago is when the cut occurred….how did they keep it under wraps.

What do we think Freddy was cooking?

    Ratatouille?

  16. ron August 13th, 2011 at 7:56 pm

They are resting garcia, colon so they can delay the rotation decision by skipping a start from everybody.

    Hughes pitched 6 innings/4 hits/1 walk,wich is a whip under 1.

    Also 6 strikeouts.

    Great numbers.

  17. Nilsson August 13th, 2011 at 7:57 pm

That’s fine. It wouldn’t hurt to skip the older pitchers like Garcia and Colon through their turns.

I liked Hughes’s start. He threw about 15 changeups. I think he gets hit harder if he didn’t have that pitch today. Goes to show how important it can be for his repertoire going forward.

  18. fantasygame101 August 13th, 2011 at 7:58 pm

Give way to burnett to prove himself one more time. If burnett stinks tomorrow then he is to the bullpen. Guess Hughes proves himself to them.

With Posada hitting 3 of 5 and was a key factor, I will have my answer in the couple of days to my question, what will they do if he hit this time? I thought posada will really hit 5 for 5.

    RadioKev,
Nova has earned a spot, and it’s not Hughes’ spot hes taking. Ilove Hughes for next year, and for the rest of this one, if that’s how it works out, but it shouldn’t be thought of as Hughes vs. Nova.
    ——–

It’s actually Colon who took the spot if anyone wants to get specific. He was the long man who replaced Hughes on the DL. It’s just that Nova had options. I think it was the best thing for Nova since it gave him a chance to work on his slider and become a better pitcher.

Colon just turned out to be a very nice surprise. :D Give him some days off and he could be stellar in the post.

I think having a 6man in september with CC going 5 and everyone else rotating around him would work out very well.

Whomever they put in the pen in the meantime (depending on Garcia’s injury), then so be it. Here are my candidates in alphabetical order:

AJ – He started out great, using his CU alot, which was a great pitch for him. There were a couple of games where it was his best pitch. He got into a slump where he’s pitching medicore but not dominating for long stretches. And he’s clearly pressing right now. This could give him breathing room. Take off pressure & allow him to focus on his CU and he can come back in september with a fresh mindset & get back to what he did early on.

Colon – Dude is tiring out. Walking more batters. Gassing out at 6 innings. This could give him a breather and help him get his strength & endurance back.

Phil – Has been a reliever before & is great at it. This would also reduce the chance of his velocity fading over the next couple of outings.

    NOT:

    CC – for obvious reasons.

Garcia – seems like he’d be slow at warming up, though it could work, But I’m not sold.

Nova – is on a role. Let him keep pitching.

  21. 4 train August 13th, 2011 at 7:58 pm

last year some dudes would have burgers when hughes won. maybe they can take betsy with them . she’s a closet hughes fan

  22. pft2 August 13th, 2011 at 7:59 pm

I guess nobody noticed the bandage on his finger for the past few days or the fact he did not throw between starts (at least not without going ouch).

If lying about injuries were a crime both the Red Sox and Yankees would be doing life in prison.

In any event, a convenient injury if true, except the wrong guy got cut.

If I’m AJ, I’m wishing for Garcia to miraculously recover. Yankees can’t hit Shields. That’s an automatic loss. Bad luck for a guy who really needs a break

  27. devcon13 August 13th, 2011 at 8:02 pm

    “because the forecast sounds bad”

Is it because of the weather or the fact AJ is starting

  28. Villa Nova-Ya August 13th, 2011 at 8:02 pm

So, wait, no one believes Garcia cut his finger???

  29. Yogi Mantle August 13th, 2011 at 8:03 pm

It does seem a bit odd timing wise, though if they were to “dump” one of the pitchers, wouldn’t it have been more likely that AJ was the one to get the cut?

  30. RadioKev August 13th, 2011 at 8:03 pm

I also don’t buy that Hughes’ fastball will play up in the pen as well as it did in 2009. Pitching more often seems to have helped him regain his strength. To me, in my unprofessional opinion, I think it’s a different situation.

  31. ron August 13th, 2011 at 8:03 pm

    Hughes

    46 fastballs
    12 changeups
    25 curveballs
    13 cutters

It’s going to take time for hughes to get over last years workload & his recent injury, wich i believe got in his head.

He is mixing his pitches better.

I’d like to see a few more changeups, but heading in the right direction.

I knew hughes would pitch well, had no doubts at all.

  32. m August 13th, 2011 at 8:05 pm

Nah, I believe that Garcia cut his finger. But it buys them a day to figure out what they’re going to do with the rotation.

I’m glad that Hughes is staying up, though.

Maybe it’s the couple of glasses of wine with dinner, but I’m having a lot of difficulty following this particular thread.

    The Yankees won today.

    Hughes pitched well.

Garcia is hurt and can’t pitch his next start.

It’s AJ’s turn tomorrow against Shields???? Already? Seems like he just pitched yesterday.

(I can’t keep track of the pitching rotation these days – anyone else feel the same?)

And, yes, they can beat Shields.

Also I just want to go on record for:

    1) i wanted the Yankees to sign Damon. They did.
    2) I wanted the Yankees to sign Teixeira. They did.
    3) I wanted the the Yankees to sign Grandy. They did.

My new want: I want the Yankees to sign Price.

  37. blake August 13th, 2011 at 8:09 pm

Girardi said on the post game that the cut affected his grip on the split and he couldn’t throw it right…..

Great game today…..so many positive things to talk about.

I wrote a few days back that I hope Jorge has his day in the sun at the stadium sometime before the season ends…..today was one of those days and I hope it’s not the last. So happy for him.

Hughes didn’t have his best fastball today but that’s some of the best “pitching” I’ve seen him do….he kept the ball down and mixed his pitches so well. That’s the best I’ve ever seen him use his changeup. He was throwing it in different counts….even 2-0 once and it was just a really effective pitch for him vs lefties today. Very encouraged by how he’s progressing….

That said about Phil…..they can’t take him out of the rotation…. this cut thing with Garcia is going to give them more time to evaluate but at some point they have to make a decision and if Hughes continues to pitch like he has his last 2 starts then they have to leave him in.

Just as a side note……today I discovered that 90% of the reason I can’t stand FOX broadcasts actually isn’t McArver…..it’s Joe Buck.

Hate to say it but I hope AJ gets rocked (implodes) tomorrow, weather permitting. Maybe that will wake Cashman and Girardi up and make the rotation decision plain and simple. Find a way to get Burnett out of there.

  48. yankee 221 August 13th, 2011 at 8:12 pm

BryanHoch So… what if Hughes pitched well and Garcia was healthy? “I don’t have to answer that question. That’s the beauty of this,” Girardi said.

  49. Betsy August 13th, 2011 at 8:12 pm

Blake, as a Bears fan, I can tell you that they hate Buck as well. I don’t know too many people, period, who like him.

Phil showed in 2010 ST that he was capable of throwing a nice changeup, but he didn’t follow up on it. He just has to use it – not a lot, maybe, but often enough so that he doesn’t lose the feel – it will help him. As I said earlier, I think Joe would like to see more of Phil in the rotation, as opposed to Cashman, who I suspect wants AJ starting so he can prove everyone wrong. I know it sounds petty, but I’m not thrilled with this version of Cashman. In any case, there’s no way he can go to the pen – well, maybe in the post-season, but not now.

  50. m August 13th, 2011 at 8:13 pm

I missed Buck. Because it was all McCarver. I can’t believe he used the word “pathetic”. Yeah, it might have been, but how about some being professional and not getting personal?

  51. yankee 221 August 13th, 2011 at 8:14 pm

“Hate to say it but I hope AJ gets rocked (implodes) tomorrow, weather permitting. Maybe that will wake Cashman and Girardi up and make the rotation decision plain and simple. Find a way to get Burnett out of there.”

Couldn’t agree more. I’d trade a somewhat innocuous regular season loss for AJ being removed from the rotation. Though knowing this regime, we will lose the game AND AJ will stay in the rotation. We can hope though…. that they do the right thing.

  55. Villa Nova-Ya August 13th, 2011 at 8:15 pm

    blake

Thanks for your last post. I was not able to watch 100% today and I wanted to know how Hughes did.

And, I agree, Buck is the wild card there. It was not a bad broadcast at all. I wasn’t able to listen 100%, but when I was watching, it was absolutely not the same as it is when Buck is there. It was manageable, for sure. Last week, I couldn’t watch/listen to Fox at all. Great improvement today. Maybe Buck will “retire” from baseball?

  56. tomingeorgia August 13th, 2011 at 8:15 pm

    Blake,
I said in the game thread that this was one of the most thoroughly satisfying games of the season. Fine pitching, great hitting, wonderful defense (with one exception, an error of judgment), What’s not to like?

  57. m August 13th, 2011 at 8:16 pm

The only thing I like about McCarver is that he’s old school. And he’s not afraid to wear gingham. But that’s all I’m going to concede.

  59. 4time August 13th, 2011 at 8:17 pm

It will be hilarious if they remove Burnett from the rotation after the way Cashman went off on everyone about how wrong we all are about AJ and how it is “crap” to suggest removing him from the rotation.

It would be the right move and would show they are more concerned about winning games than looking good or stroking egos (in this case, Burnetts AND Cashman’s). But we know the odds are against it.

  60. Villa Nova-Ya August 13th, 2011 at 8:18 pm

  63. blake August 13th, 2011 at 8:19 pm

    Betsy,

If he can become comfortable enough to make the change his 3rd pitch and use it effectively vs lefties then it’s going to help him so much……he’s gotten back to fastball/curve being his main attack…..I really liked what I saw today because he threw a great game without his best fastball….that’s progress and that’s what he’s needed to work on.

One thing about Gardner’s defense today. It was a 7-1 lead when he made the diving attempt in left-center gap. Yes, it was a low probability attempt. But given the circumstances — his crazy speed and a 6-run lead at the time — it wasn’t a bad judgement play.

  69. blake August 13th, 2011 at 8:22 pm

McArver knows baseball….he’s just old and I’m not sure he keeps up with the current guys playing as much as he could…..Buck just acts like he would rather be somewhere else and it’s really hard to listen to. Blake, that’s why he must stay as a starter – if not in the rotation, then in AAA. This has been close to a wasted year for Phil – close, but not quite there. While I don’t believe AJ has been bad enough to warrant removal, sometimes you have to adjust on the fly. The Yankees need to find out what they may or may not have in Hughes, esp. if they intend to start him next year.

Good job by Phil, but I don’t think it was enough. I’m not sure how Girardi is thinking, but Cashman is going to send AJ out there if for no other reason to back up his rant yesterday. I just hope they send Phil to AAA and not to the pen.

  73. blake August 13th, 2011 at 8:24 pm

Eh….with a 6 run lead I don’t mind Gardner trying to catch that ball…..I think he cuts it off if the game is closer. It probably was an error in judgement but I just can’t get him much grief about anything he does defensively

How about Taking Betsy’s posts in context?

I went back to read some of the game thread.

Seems to me, Betsy gave Phil a lot of credit for the way he mixed pitches today.

I can’t speak for Betsy but she seemed to be saying it may not be enough to change the Yankees’ minds about what they planned to do.

    ***

Anyway – seems Garcias’ 4-day-old kitchen injury suddenly became an issue after Hughes pitched well.

    Coincidence???

  77. blake August 13th, 2011 at 8:26 pm

“Blake, that’s why he must stay as a starter – if not in the rotation, then in AAA. This has been close to a wasted year for Phil – close, but not quite there. ”

I agree about AAA…..however the season isn’t over yet and if he helps them win in the playoffs then Hughes could still have a great season because in the end that’s all that matters. The first half of the season don’t matter anymore….all that matters is what he does going forward from here…..they need to find out what he can give them this year

Mind you, I think he can. BUT not with the pressure he’s under & the cry for his head. It’s one thing to have pressure & people rooting for you, it’s another to know that everyone wants you gone.

Meanwhile, with every passing day, Granderson plays himself into a position where you’ve got to ask – how is this guy not an MVP?

  102. blake August 13th, 2011 at 8:42 pm

General observations on Hughes from last 2 starts.

-He is working much faster….he knows what he wants to throw and is just getting the ball and throwing it….that’s always a good sign
-his delivery looks more fluid and less mechanical and he’s really driving towards the plate again and that’s helping him drive the ball down in the zone more often.
-he’s throwing his curveball harder….76-78 now it seems instead of 72-74….tighter, harder break.
-he’s pitching in more than he has in the past with the fastball
    -he’s throwing less cutters
-he’s gaining more confidence in the changeup and really is using it more effectively…..throwing it behind in the count and early in counts…..he threw some really good ones today 84-85 mph

like what I’m seeing as all these things are positive and addressed what he needed to work on.

  103. mick August 13th, 2011 at 8:43 pm

Truly , if AJ doesn’t show some guts, he will join Freddy on kitchen patrol.

Not to mention that he’s putting up MONSTER numbers for a CF. He’s leading the leagues in RBI, HR, and runs (by a bunch). He should be the leader

WOW! When your own catcher throws you under the bus you know you are done.

ATLANTA — The Chicago Cubs placed Carlos Zambrano on the disqualified list Saturday and said the right-hander would receive no pay and have no part in team activities for 30 days.

Zambrano cleaned out his locker and left the team after giving up five homers and being ejected from Friday night’s 10-4 loss to the Braves. He did not return to the team Saturday.

General manager Jim Hendry said Saturday that Zambrano’s actions, including a brush-back pitch to Chipper Jones that led to the ejection, were “intolerable.”

“This was the most stringent penalty we could enforce without a release,” Hendry said.

Cubs pitcher Ryan Dempster had similarly strong words. “He’s made his bed. Let him sleep in it,” Dempster said. “It’s not like it’s something new.”

    WCYF,

The Cubs beat writer was on espn radio today. He said Soriano has always been a Zambrano supporter, but even he said what the volatile pitcher did was “weak”. (not sure if he meant throwing 2x at Chipper Jones or some subsequent action like clearing his locker and saying he quit)

  136. Villa Nova-Ya August 13th, 2011 at 9:02 pm

I don’t think Colon would actually be an MVP; but I do think the contributions he’s made to this team this year have to put him in some of the conversation for it. It all depends on your definition of MVP.

Certainly, award or not, Colon has provided much more to the team than was ever imagined.

I think if Grandy was not up against A Gonzalez, he would definitely get the MVP. But we all know how that stuff works.

    joeman -

cost:performance is an interesting interpretation of the award.

  139. joeman August 13th, 2011 at 9:04 pm

    * The Yankees will not release catcher Jorge Posada, which is why they’re having trouble squeezing prospect Jesus Montero to the big leagues. The Yanks do not want to go to an 11-man pitching staff, which they’d have to do if they called up Montero.

    ———————————-
so Montero won’t be here until 9/1

  140. m August 13th, 2011 at 9:04 pm

I don’t feel that pitchers should get the MVP, unless there’s a dearth of worthy candidates. I feel a position player should get it. And if Ortiz had his way, a DH would get them, too. :)

  141. mick August 13th, 2011 at 9:05 pm

Good analysis. Probably why Cashman supported AJ in public. He’s trying to push that button, which probably relates to some sort of abandonment issues.

I think Cashman realizes that a good AJ is more beneficial to this team in the long run. So I think the rain delay may help. Don’t think he’s that far off to where he needs to be, and cashman wants to get him right as soon as possible.

Assuming the team knew Garcia probably couldn’t go tomorrow, I wonder if Cashman timed his rant down to the last minute, knowing that Hughes was going to get another start (and so therefore, if he was pulled from the rotation, people couldn’t point to Cashman’s rant as an obvious warning sign)

  173. Betsy August 13th, 2011 at 9:31 pm

Blake, I saw Pedroia on the cover of SI and had to ask myself why he’s on the cover and not Granderson?

  174. mick August 13th, 2011 at 9:32 pm

now betsy is on another level…have to digest that awhile

  175. m August 13th, 2011 at 9:35 pm

I took cash’s rant at face value. Cash was simply backing up his player imo.

    AJ is given another chance

    ===========

He has had far too many already.

    =====================================================

And 80 Million to go with it. Wonder if that factors in ? Hmmmm……………

  177. mick August 13th, 2011 at 9:37 pm

This season is almost over, AJ is running out of chances, it’s all about the postseason anyway.

  178. tomingeorgia August 13th, 2011 at 9:38 pm

I’d like to think that our GM was quite that Machiavellian. Then, we’d really be the Evil Empire.

  179. mick August 13th, 2011 at 9:38 pm

I love Freddy being the fall guy, taking one for the team.

  180. blake August 13th, 2011 at 9:38 pm

“I saw Pedroia on the cover of SI and had to ask myself why he’s on the cover and not Granderson?”

that’s easy….Pedroia gets to the park 12 hours early and gets his uniform dirty….and he plays for the Red Sox.

I think Cashman needs to smoke the reality pipe……I smoked some of the objectivity pipe and still think Hughes needs to stay in the rotation.

  181. UnKnown August 13th, 2011 at 9:38 pm

I really doubt that a rainout tomorrow would skip AJ. He will just go on Monday in KC as planned if Freddy would’ve pitched tomorrow.

If they wanted to skip AJ a turn they could’ve done that without a rainout tomorrow. Nova is ready to go on Monday after 4 days rest.

  182. mick August 13th, 2011 at 9:40 pm

    AJ is Fredo.
    Jete-Michael Corleone
    Arod-Sonny
    Posada-Bunzini

  183. blake August 13th, 2011 at 9:40 pm

I think Freddy really does have a cut and the way they described it was that it really only affected his split….which is a really important pitch for him. Who knows if he could really pitch or not but with the current situation they have there is no use in chancing it…..won’t hurt for him to have the extra rest anyway.

  184. JM August 13th, 2011 at 9:42 pm

    m August 13th, 2011 at 9:00 pm
Are they expecting bad weather tomorrow? When would they make up that game?

Off-topic, but I just finished watching Season 4 of The Wire. I have to say that it is the single most compelling season of television drama I have ever seen. Great story lines, and the focus on the kids made it so rich.

    ___________

    m,

I agree. Think The Wire as a whole, is the best series that’s ever been on TV. But that Season 4 in particular….Sometimes I’d watch an episode and just shake my head about how perfect it was.

  185. Betsy August 13th, 2011 at 9:43 pm

Blake, I know – I don’t know why I care since I think SI stinks.

Cashman is smoking some nasty stuff – and has been since ST. He needs to smoke the “stop treating fans like idiots” pipe because who didn’t see right through him? While he’s at it, he can lay down the AJ rattle – he comes across like a baby.

  186. mick August 13th, 2011 at 9:43 pm

They don’t want to disrupt a 5 man staff with extra rest and they will have AJ warming until they call it so he will “have” to miss a turn.

    And he will like it.

  187. mick August 13th, 2011 at 9:44 pm

Who cares what the fans think?
Cash isn’t running for office. Jeez.

  188. LGY August 13th, 2011 at 9:46 pm

All I know is that I would like to get a hold of whatever Cash is smoking during AJ’s starts.

It has gotta be some good stuff.

  189. mick August 13th, 2011 at 9:47 pm

    Cash does that medicinal sh*t

  190. Captain Clutch August 13th, 2011 at 9:51 pm

    ———

The smurf movie did just come out. So it makes sense…..

  191. mick August 13th, 2011 at 9:52 pm

Look at this sked over the next 15 games:
    KC-3, Minn-4, Oak-3,Balt.-5.

    10-5 or 11-4?

  192. tomingeorgia August 13th, 2011 at 9:53 pm

I like it, but let’s just get this one tomorrow.

  193. blake August 13th, 2011 at 9:55 pm

    Desmond Jennings: 2011

    AAA: .275/.374/.454/.830
    MLB: .329/.420/.592/1.030

A kid the Rays have held down all season when he probably could have been in the big leagues from day 1……they always move slow with their prospects though as they want them to be ready and they want 6 good years and prime years before they lose them to free agency. They’ll have Jennings for ages 24-29 and then he’ll walk

  194. mick August 13th, 2011 at 9:55 pm

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

(There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.
