A-Rod update
Alex Rodriguez participated in a camp day in Tampa, simulated game situations for low-level Yankees minor leaguers. According to the Yankees, he had four hits in 13 at-bats, including two doubles. He fanned three times. He ran the bases on most of the at-bats. He also played the equivalent of three innings at third.
Joe Girardi still expects to get him back during the four-game series in Minnesota that starts Thursday night.

Repost:
Some of you may remember me from my very infrequent posts (though I post rarely, I’ve been reading this blog, almost daily, for years.)
Chad has given me the OK to talk a bit about a great little baseball publication that has miraculously survived about 30 years, even as so many other little magazines fall, regrettably, by the wayside.
Spitball: The Literary Baseball Magazine has published short stories and poems – always on the subject of baseball – by some very accomplished writers, including the likes of W.P Kinsella (“Field of Dreams”), as well as some fine illustrative baseball art. They also do a large number of insightful reviews on current baseball books (biographies, baseball history, strategy, fiction – just about anything involving the game we love.)
Spitball is always looking for more contributors. So if you are into writing fiction or poetry, you should have a look at their website for writers guidelines (http://www.spitballmag.com.) And if you’re just interested in reading baseball fiction and interesting reviews, you might want to support a great little publication by taking a subscription (Spitball is published twice a year.)
I had a short story (“The Boy From The Bronx”) published in the Spring 2008 edition and will appear again in the Spring 2011 edition (“Sunflower Sam”), which will be available in a few weeks time (small magazines are often short-handed and run a bit late!) for $3.00, including postage.
Whatever you decide, please have a stroll through their website. I think you’ll enjoy it.
Arod Ks 3x?!
Not to rush him, but if A-Rod is healthy how much practice does he need?
Betsy,
Why do you think that Phil has to prove himself a quality starter? Has he not done so thus far?
I don’t know why people make so much of what Hughes looked like in April. (Yes, I know that you’re thinking it goes back to last year). But let’s talk about this year. Like right now. Is he still not pitching well enough for you? Or is it because Nova is pitching so well and you feel he’s the high water mark?
tomingeorgia August 14th, 2011 at 1:50 pm
Was it in the late ’60s? I was otherwise busy for a few years there.
************
What were you busy doing?
WCYF,
I was abroad, in the nation’s service.
I see.
Has ‘Negative Nellie’ gone underground in search of new pitching prospects for the Yankees ?
Probably making a new voodoo doll. The last one didn’t work.
Phil has already proved himself just fine.
He was an all star caliber major leaguer for the past two full seasons.
That may not be enough for some people, but its plenty for me.
Now that he’s healthy, I expect him to continue to perform and progress. The way he so willingly uncorked his secondary pitches against a good team yesterday was extremely encouraging.
That said, when he has his really good fastball (and he might have that 94-95 bb like he had against Chicago one out of every three starts or so) I expect and hope he throws the pitch up to 75 percent of the time. Its a special pitch. He shouldn’t forget how good it is just to placate people who want to see him “develop secondary pitches” because he has the ability to be a consistent star largely based on that pitch alone.
they have 6 Sux games left.
pretty much they still control their division fate. If they continue to fail, then Sux is well deserved to win division, and don’t expect yanks can go deep in postseason.
I can see why people insist that Phil develop those secondary pitches. First of all he doesn’t live off a 97 mph fastball. But more importantly, it will take him to another level. As well as save his rear on days when he doesn’t have the good fastball going.
Anyway, it’s good to see that Phil doesn’t seem to have long-term damage. I think that’s what worried me the most. Not that he forgot how to pitch or that he’ll be supplanted in the rotation. Just want him to be healthy. Because the times when he’s been bad, it’s due to his health.
Hughes has lot to prove, long way to go.
Let him start against top teams: sux, rangers and LAA, see what he got.
Arodys Vizcaino makes his major league debut for the Braves with a 4-3 lead vs. the Cubs, men on 1st and 3rd with one out.
He strikes out three to record the next two outs, but with a couple wild pitches. The Cubs tie the game on the first of those.
It’s hard to hug while weeping.
Hughes has proven he is healthy. He has proven that he can give quality outings.
Now that he’s healthy again, he’ll be a coveted arm. Lucky thing Cashman covets him, too.
He keeps pitching like he has, you guys will come back around to him.
Hughes newsflash.
A while back Pedro Gomez of ESPN reported that Phil Hughes had a cyst removed from his shoulder.
Chad E-mailed Cashman about it and he flatly denied it ever happened.
After Cashman’s denial I sent Gomez a letter asking him for more info. about the story and to reaffirm it in the light of Cashman’s denial.
Well. He just got back to me so I thought I would share his response.
I’ll quote it below :
“Concerned Yankee Fan,
I just received the email you had forwarded to ESPN on my behalf about a report I did several weeks ago on Phil Hughes having a cyst removed from his right shoulder. You ask where I received this information. I received it straight from Phil and pitching coach Larry Rothschild, who said as much during a quick interview we did with him on the field before that night’s game. I absolutely stand by my report.”
Sincerely,
pedro
Make what you will of it.
I apologize for the length of the post but I thought it was important.
I understand Yankee fan impatience, we are a spoiled bunch with good reason. But sometimes I wonder if fans truly appreciate the talent Phil Hughes brings to the table. I’m hard pressed to think of a pitcher that didn’t have some injury problems, and for a 25 year old making $2.7 million who has been moved around like he has due to the team’s needs and management whims; minors, starter, pen, starter, etc., he’s a gold mine.
Home grown, cost controlled, an 18-8 All-Star in the AL East with a fastball, curve, change and cutter who throws 92-95 with life when healthy. Come on now. Wake up.

MTU, Lohud sleuth!
Thanks for going the extra mile.
Y’know, if it’s true, it should make the cynics less vitriolic about what Hughes’ true “upside” is. Amazing how some have decided that at 25 he’s actually at heart a mid to back rotation guy.
But i wonder why Hughes & Rothschild would be so up front about something the Yanks were so mum on…? Unless your intrepid reporter ambushed them with the info & they just on the spot, ‘fessed up. I wonder about the reporter’s ethics, too, giving up his sources like that when he knows how fast news travels on the internet…
I don’t know what to make of it, but it’s interesting…

Probably will get a carbon copy. At least he replied. Makes you wonder who is BS’ing who.
Wow MTU that is really interesting, great work. It’s hard not to believe Pedro Gomez when he speaks of being told by Phil and Rothschild in person. That is first-hand with corroboration and he knows he would lose his job over that if he made that up out of whole cloth.
As to why Cashman denied it if true, well, that is hard to fathom. It’s not as if a review of Hughes medical history wouldn’t have turned it up if he got traded.
Can we expect any help from Seattle pitcher Charlie Furbush?
‘Furbush’ sounds like he should be selling cleaning supplies.

when was the cyst removed?
do you think it had an effect on his arm?
Nick,
You missed Arodys’ real debut where he struck out 1 and walked/hit by pitch a few to load the bases against the Marlins
Let me try this question again, because I really don’t know the answer.
General question: When did the trend towards pitching starters on five days rest begin? Most of the all-time great pitchers were in 4-man rotations, pitching every fourth game. Was it in the late ’60s? I was otherwise busy for a few years there. But the great rotations of the ’50s and sixties (Indians, Orioles, etc) pitched every fourth day, if my memory serves. Who began the trend, and why? I seem to remember that 11-man pitching staffs were unusual, and long relief went to the best ex-starter in the pen.
You’re all welcome.
One thing for sure.
Someone is not telling the truth.
legally, if it was done in the off season, i wonder if cash is allowed to volunteer any information esp without phil’s permission.
pitching on 4 days rest , every 5th day is what you must mean tom…
Good one, Jerkface. Next you’ll tell me that Arodys removed a cyst from Billy the Marlin.

Yup.
Tom, the Mets in the early 70s started that I belive, mostly because of issues with Ryank, and Gary Gentry, but, Koosman also came down wth some injuries. Gil Hodges was big on this until his death around’72.

No, I meant they pitched every fourth day, three days rest. All season long. The starting four had more starts in 154 games than pitchers do now in 162.
Fun thought for the day. AJ Burnett makes twice as much money as Curtis Granderson.

Whatever they have to spin to work it out in the best interest of the team is fine with most fans.
They were getting anywhere from 38-41 starts a year. That’s why they piled up those 325+ inninga year.

Ask yourself, why would a reporter with a good job risk everything to make up something like Hughes having a cyst. And to do so in writing, and name his sources, Hughes and Rothschild is pretty powerful to me.
What would he gain? He wouldn’t get a raise for that or be accorded any favor. It’s not a big story at all.
It’s funny that some assume the media is lying instead of the corporate mouthpiece.

did you have to take the tractor to bar harbor to get the lobsters ?
By the way, Gomez left a cell # :
602 206-5072
Tom, those staffs of thelate 50s and early 60s were the first ones that I remember cranking out 40+ starts a year. Hard to believe that it wasn’t until 1961 that Whitey Ford was ever in a normal rotation. Stengel would juggle the rotation to where he usually faced the aces of the other staffs. He may as well have been on a 5 man rotaton. It’s amazing that he won as many gams as he did making 30-31 starts a year. The ones I remember most were the Dodger and Giants staffs along with Burdette and Spahn. Even Sudden Sam would pull in 39-40 starts a year.i
these guys are gossip mongers always looking to break a “story”
do they get paid by the degree of controversy they stir up?
this need to be 1st is what the public clamors for I guess.
Does anyone remember what Gomez said on tv? More specifically when the cyst was removed? Wonder if it was done by the vascular specialist who essentially cleared Hughes?
Yeah…right. All reporters are honest and would never fabricate a story. ESPN is a network without morals.

what was strange was i had questioned his credentials.
i’m assuming somehow he did it by accident.
linking up with me could probably get someone fired who works for brian cashman
mick. holier than thou, what are you talking about dude. you new here ?
Randy
Rumor is Cashman is trying to trade Montero for Salty.
He read how you praised him here the other day.
Does anyone remember what Gomez said on tv? More specifically when the cyst was removed? Wonder if it was done by the vascular specialist who essentially cleared Hughes?
__________________________________________________________
It was a “throw down” from the ESPN booth to Gomez in the stands by the dugout. Gomez said that Hughes had cyst removed from his shoulder in April and that the Yankees believed that was the reason for his poor performance.
Cashman’s denial means it didn’t happen. It’s not something Cashman can lie about or enlist other people to lie about. If Hughes were traded his medical records would have to be provided to his new team.
In light of the explanation now coming from Gomez, the only issue is whether Gomez honestly misinterpreted something Hughes and Rothschild said or just made it up.
Why would Gomez make it up? And if he did, what would he identify both Hughes and Rothschild as his sources? Makes no sense.
…why
9/1 is too late for him to gain any level of comfort.
If Girardi thinks Cervelli is a better option than Jesus Montero, well then what can you say, really, because something so crazy defies refutation. Meanwhile, I’ll check in here & there to see if there’s an announcement on Montero’s callup. SWB was rained out tonight. For all we know, he’s on his way
…
nah forget it, bring jesus up tomorrow…
lounge lizard,
Thanks for that. He said April? So, this is after his poor pitching, they sent him for tests, then put him on the DL. And somewhere along the line he had a cyst removed in the month of April?
I’m with you, I’m more inclined to believe that there was a misunderstanding here. I know in April, there was talk that surgery might be required to unbundle a cluster of packed vessels. But then there was relief that wasn’t necessary.
All I know is that they’re calling it tendinitis. And they haven’t changed that story. I don’t believe Gomez is making up stuff, but I wonder if followed up with Hughes and/or Rothschild re: the discrepancy.
Randy,
you missed your chance to be a double agent
you can’t expect montero to be familiar with the staff at this late date
he would be here strictly for his bat
evidently they don’t feel the urgency
Blake-
The only real double agent is Cano.
Or is that double machine ?
MTU,
machine….he’s heating up
randy
linking up with me could probably get someone fired

fixed
Obviously, they don’t. He ain’t here. We’ll see how it shakes out tomorrow.
Blake-
I like watching the Cano that you can’t get out.
When he’s in beast mode.
Hope he saves it for when it really counts.
Cashman has already said that Girardi wouldn’t catch him as he isn’t familiar with the staff. They’re in a pennant race – thats far more important than Montero. Even if he doesn’t play until next spring at his age so what.
The latest we see the Messiah of Mash will be September.

That was an interesting question earlier about when the 4 man rotation became the 5 man rotation….made me do a little research.
I thought the man cause was the lowering of the pitcher’s mound, which put more strain on pitchers’ arms…but I found little to no mention of that. What I did find was the following:

Seems the Dodgers started it, and it spread quickly. Perhaps as GB7 mentioned, the Mets were also early adapters. Seemed to be more about economics and protecting investments than anything else.

Tired of all the pining for Jesus.
He’ll get here when he gets here.
The team is more important and they are managing fine without him.
It’s not like he’s tearing things up down there.

as long as we agree on the same religion which is baseball, all’s good

Well said. He’s not going to catch and with the long season, injuries and Posada, it looks like DH time will be at a premium. I think they would rather he play every day now as he has things he still needs to work on.
Sometimes I wonder if we are baseball fans or Yankee fans.
Without the Yankees I wouldn’t have the same interest.

Heres what we get when arod comes back.
I did a (not very thorough) search for any kind of confirmation that Hughes had a cyst removed. The only nugget I found was this ” # have a cigar July 7th, 2011 at 3:28 pm
Pedro Gomez: “Did I say, ‘Cyst removed’? Oops, I meant, ‘Cavity filled’. Sorry about the confusion.”
When I clicked on the link it redirected me to LoHud.
Anyway, I love a good mystery. Anyone know how long a cyst removed from the labrum would take to recover from?
click play.
We’ll see how it shakes out tomorrow.

Bojo,
Maybe it was the mound, or it was “minor league development”. Either way, innings are down, starts are down. How’d those old guys do it? Anyway, thanks for responding.
tom
ever look at the amount of complete games those oldtimers had?
not to mention shutouts.
before the advent of the pitch count
Tom, a lot of it had to do with the fact that players and pitchers were starting to make big money (a lot of $100,000-$150,000 a year comtracts) and the GMs wanted to protect their investments.
Catch you all later.
Time for some Sunday night baseball.

__________
A lot of factors IMO. Like GB said, money was a factor.
There was a great article about a year ago on the effect of lowering the mound
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/.....id=4359938
Good read.
Warren Spahn started 665 games and completed 382, that’s almost 60% of games started, he finished and some of them were extra innings.
Not to mention he saved a few games.
Long day without Yankee baseball.
Later.
TG–
You’ll note in that article (IIRC) that there has also been a shift in pitching approach. Without the advantage of the higher downward plane, pitchers have had to throw harder throughout the game, resulting in more effort and injuries. Thus the advent of the pitch count and 5 man rotation.
what happens to the montero kid if he goes 1-20 and strikes out 4 or 5 times with guys on the bases. how fast will the press and the fans start to turn on the kid. just seeing how things happen here with yankee players
Montero can catch Nova. He has caught Nova for 2 years.
Buster_ESPN With Rich Dauer being taken to hospital for observation after being hit in the nose, Glenallen Hill will coach 3B for COL, Marv Foley 1B.

Didn’t realize Glenallen Hill was a coach for the Rockies.
That dude hit the longest HR I’ve ever seen at Wrigley Field.
Several guys have hit the building across the street on Waveland but Hill hit the ball ON TOP OF THE ROOF across the street.
That was some kind of blast.

Who knows? There isn’t much to work with here. If it happened, it was probably nothing–an outpatient procedure. The whole thing is so speculative. I would need a bit more than the uncorroborated claims of some ESPN reporter.
mick,
A lot of guys in the day used to go nine, and they were ashamed if they didn’t. Go farther back, some of them pitched both ends of a double header.
