This will be problem for the last week and a half of the season.
The orginal off day on the 22nd, before the Red Sox weekend series, will now be used for a makeup DH (the July 8 game against Tampa was also rained out and already rescheduled for that day), right before the Red Sox come in, and they go to Tampa that Sunday night for a three-game set to finish the season. That is looking like a tough, and important, 10 games, in 9 days. What a way to finish the regular season.
The Yanks have six starting pitchers plus other pitchers in the minors that could start or be used as relievers with the expanded roster in September, so DH’s in September should not be too much of a problem.
I can’t think of any other time they can play it besides a double header in their last trip to the stadium which is right at the end of the year before Boston comes to town.
So, Burnett gets a chance to get hammered around by the K.C. Royals tomorrow night. The best hope is that Girardi gets the bullpen heated up the very first chance Burnett shows his normal falling apart when given some runs to work with.
Forgot about the expanding roster, maybe that will alleviate some of the issues that could arise from a 10 game in 9 day schedule. Glad we have so much pitching depth, thats for sure.
Hopefully by then the Rays will feel compelled to just role over and die. Hopefully.
Solid is the word that general manager Brian Cashman used to describe Burnett’s performance this year. You did not have to read between the lines of Cashman’s Friday speech to realize management wants Burnett (8-9, 4.60 ERA) in the rotation. If this were a game of poker, consider the Yankees all-in on Burnett.
They are betting that Burnett’s talent overcomes his other shortcomings and that is their right.
In Chicago on Aug. 2, Hughes pitched six shutout innings. Burnett, who will be moved up a day to start in place of Garcia today, has not won since June 29. Cashman and Girardi can set up the rotation any way they want. They are hoping Burnett will come through for them down the stretch simply because he has so much talent.
**
Just how much talent does AJ really have at this point? While I think Cashman really does want AJ over Phil, it’s odd that he would think that way about his own signing over a pitcher he’s developed
The last two starts Hughes has made may have been the best he’s “pitched” since that night in Texas a few yeas back……his stuff has been better velocity wise but he’s shown signs of progress both with secondary stuff and pitch sequence……….to take that away now and not follow up on it would be beyond dumb IMO……
Blake, I agree, but Cashman is entirely unpredictable at this point. He’s clearly staked out a position with regards to the rotation and it’s all about AJ. I think Phil has to pitch a lot better than AJ does in order to have a spot in the rotation.
The Yankees are the ones who need to smoke the objective pipe …….forget about his contract and ask the question…..is he one of the best 5 starters we have right now?
I should say, he’s predictable at this point………..I like AJ, but he hasn’t been good enough (he hasn’t been awful this year either) for the GM to be that passionate about him.
Betsy this is all just PR noise. Anyone with eyes can see that while both Hughes and AJ have struggled this season, as well as in the past, Phil is the pitcher with more upside. Realistically though, AJ hasn’t been as awful as his record suggests (we never seem to be able to take advantage of his decent outtings), he still has a lot of money on his deal, and if we have any chance to move him in the off season the last thing we should be doing is moving him out of the rotation.
AJ hasn’t been Ollie Perez bad or Pineiro or Kazmir bad. I’m not even sure he’s been John Lackey bad. It just sucks for him that we have so much depth in our pitching dept.

I would like to see Hughes stay in the Yankee rotation ……but I mainly want him to continue starting so he can build oj what he’s doing…..sending him to the pen to mop up would be the worst outcome ……he needs to pitch and he needs to pitch every 5th day.
Blake, the one thing the Yankees can not do is put Hughes in the pen – yet I have no confidence that if they choose AJ that they won’t do that. I just have the feeling that Cashman is down on Hughes and doesn’t particularly care about his development at this time. He will be an absolute waste in the pen – not only because he won’t pitch much (unless the starter is hit hard), but because all the progress he’s made will have been for naught. I still don’t get why, if they weren’t going to have a long leash for him, they even called him up in the first place.
No one is going to want AJ, whether he’s in the rotation or removed and sent to the pen. Teams are not stupid – they are well aware of what AJ is and isn’t at this point. I don’t even know why any team would want him? 5th starters on good teams are often starters with some promise of upside – that’s not AJ. Then, why would bad teams want him?
The thing with Hughes is – I wonder if Cashman (well actually I do think this is the case) thinks along the lines of Joel Sherman today, who wrote that Phil has not just slipped past Nova on the depth chart, but has to now just re-establish himself as a “quality pitcher”, forget being a fixture in future rotations. If Cashman does feel that way, then he clearly thinks AJ is a quality pitcher and Phil has a very long way to go in proving that he is one
blake – I just have a funny feeling guys like Garcia and Colon will all have “legitimate” reasons for not pitching to get everyone through September. I genuinely think the Yanks are approaching every cycle turn by turn and will cut whatever fingers necessary to make sure everyones fresh.
They’re not moving CC up a day so if AJ pitches Mon.then either Nova or Colon gets moved down.
Since the object of the 5 man is to pitch on proper rest, I hope the y skip AJ.
Betsy, Carl Pavano has been given multiple contracts since his stint with the Yankees. I feel like thats pretty much all anyone needs to know about how desperately all of the MLB teams need pitching. If the deal is right, there are plenty of teams that would take the shot. Especially if the Yanks would pick up a chunk of his salary.
Blake, I fear it too. For all that I am skeptical about Hughes, I have never wanted him to be sent to the pen – that’s where he’d go when the Yankees have finally given up on him. I get Cashman is upset that he came to camp overweight, but I hope he’s not holding that grudge. I do get the idea that he felt obligated to bring Hughes up after his injury, that he would have personally preferred to leave him in AAA and stay with Nova. I read all the articles this spring, into the season and if you read between the lines, it was clear where Hughes stood in Cashman’s eyes – and it wasn’t good.
Didn’t they leave AJ out of the playoff mix initially last year?
Anyway, it is best for the Yankees to be solidly behind AJ for the time being. They need him to pitch well. They need all 6 of them to pitch well. Stuff will sort itself out.
In the meatime, Garcia’s kitchen accident buys them a little more time. Maybe after Garcia, someone else will develop something not serious, but serious enough to skip them one time through the rotation.
Shame, IMO the Yankees have no desire to do that. They don’t have confidence in Phil going forward, that’s apparent. The GM loves AJ – and the Yankees are not going to eat most of AJ’s salary. This is not something I intend to speculate about because I don’t think the chances of this happening are realistic.
Why would Phil be moved to the pen. I mean, why would anyone think that way is beyond me?
He has been pitching well and has earned a spot. Must be latent negativity rearing its ugly head again.
AJ still has some value…can go 200 plus innings and keep team in games for most part. Depending on how much is required to get him and how much cash is eaten, there could be a deal that Cashman hopes for this winter. That could be the reason he is defending AJ…it certainly isn’t his looks
Blake, I agree, but Cashman is entirely unpredictable at this point. He’s clearly staked out a position with regards to the rotation and it’s all about AJ.
=========================================
Nonsense. You cannot take Cash at face value.
I agree with Shame – there will be someone who will be interested in AJ. But the Yankees will have to absorb some of the cost of his contract, likely.
And GMs will look at AJ’s NDs and losses in outings where he kept the opponent to under 3 runs and be impressed with that.
AJ is still talented. And he hasn’t been AS BAD this season as he’s being portrayed. And actually depending on what the rest of the rotation looks like next year, even the Yankees aren’t able to trade AJ, he’s okay as a “#5″ starter. Frustrating as all get-out, though.
Shame, IMO the Yankees have no desire to do that. They don’t have confidence in Phil going forward, that’s apparent. The GM loves AJ
=============================
Its your opinion and OF COURSE you are entitled to it but….do you ever think before you spew?
Betsy – I won’t speak to anything else, but to say they have no confidence in Phil seems like a bit of a stretch. If that were the case, there’s no doubt in my mind he would have been moved for another piece during the trade deadline. People read too much into what Cash and the Yankee PR machine churns out. AJ was placed on waivers – that’s not exactly a sign of confidence (and before someone tells me they didn’t expect anyone to claim him then why not place guys like CC out there just for giggles?). The Yanks are buying their time.. trying to get the most out of the guys that they have. All of them. But, again, theres no doubt in my mind they go with the best 5.. they were willing to leave AJ off the postseason roster before, they’ll do it again.
I can’t believe that people are mystified that Cashman defended AJ Burnett. Of course he defends him. He’s the one that threw boatloads of money at him. If Brian Cashman admits Burnett is a lost effort, it reflects extremely poorly on Brian Cashman. Hence, does anyone actually take what comes out of his mouth to hold much truth? There’s no way he even believes Burnett is any good. But he has to indicate otherwise for the sake of his bacon.
Do people expect Cashman to say, “I screwed up. I gave this gutless pitcher too much money?” Seriously? He says what he has to say. But that doesn’t mean people should take it for face value that he actually believes it.
NY will keep Hughes starting, along with the others. Garcia’s going to be a Type B FA and NY will offer him arbitration to get the extra pick. Colon’s future is less clear, though I can see him going somewhere else next year. He’d be a perfect choice for long man/swing man in the pen, but, not st more than a 1 year $4 mil deal with incentives.
Much to the consternation of some, Hughes will be in the long-term future of the Yankees as while Burnett. As far as those that think they know how Cashman feels about Hughes, all I can say is BS. A few on here have made complete asses of yourselves where Hughes is concerned and are now trying to backpedal as fast as you can.
Shame, for who? Who were they going to trade him for? They did offer him up for a pitcher they didn’t even know was healthy. Anyway, we’ll just have to wait and see.
i’m not sure what cashman’s next move is with burnett, but he did sign him up for some special classes with a new personal trainer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NH-K9nSD37g
Cashman can say whatever he wants, but, it’s a lot easier to downplay Hughes’ contributions and future publically, mainly because he seems to be more sure and confident of himself. It does no good to hammer at Burnett and plant that seed of doubt into a guy that is clearly struggling.
I didn’t mean to start up trouble, because I know a lot of people that take whats in the paper at face value. I just don’t know if the Yanks ever quite considered what to do if both Nova and Hughes made this type of push. They probably assumed one or both of Garcia and Colon would break down by this point and in the off chance Nova rose to the occasion and Hughes produced a season like he did last year (which clearly he hasn’t but he does seem to be coming around) they could just replace the junk heap arms.
There’s no way they expected Colon to be one of their best starters and they may have thought they could get this much from Garcia but his consistency has also been a really great surprise. If we make it to the WS theres no doubt in my mind it will be on the shoulders of those two.
Phil Hughes won 18 games as a starter for the Yankees in 2010.
Phil Hughes was slotted as the #3 starter coming into the season, that means there were two others slotted below him in the rotation.
Phil Hughes had a shoulder problem that he tried to pitch through spring training and had to be shut down.
The shoulder problem has been resolved.
Phil Hughes has pitched well since coming back, in particular the last two starts where he has been really good.
What is the mystery here? Phil deserves a spot in the rotation, period. There is no other logical conclusion based on performance.
All this crap about ‘Cashman being down on him’ or anything else read into the situation is just worthless nonsense, all the Yankees and Cashman are doing is trying to justify the money spent on Burnett in the hopes they will be able to deal him or he will all of a sudden throw some dominant starts, something he hasn’t done over the past two months.
Betsy – To me saying you have no confidence in a guy is a big deal. IMO, probably one of the worst indictments on a player. If you don’t have confidence in him now that’s not gonna change so why keep him around? If you’ve lost all hope in a player, you’d move him for anything or anyone because you’re assuming you’ll never get a return back on your investment.
If they didn’t think he could start, or didnt have the confidence in him to start, why did they even bother calling him up again to cause this 6 man rotation fiasco? I just don’t follow the logic. If they gave up on Phil, Phil wouldnt still be in the conversation. They’re just buying time..
MG, either way it amounts to the same thing, doesn’t it? The probability that AJ maintains his spot in the rotation? Anyway, it’s all speculation that this is about the contract as well – everything is about speculation.
TB and NY have off days on 9/19 , so looks like a 4 game series with Boston coming in for the weekend killing 2 off days that week.
The season end right after with 3 in Tampa.
Kinda brutal.
Your last post is right on. In some very good ways, the Yankees have gotten a lot more than they figured there were going to get, especially with regards to Colon and Garcia, but also with regards to Nova.
A good problem, but a problem nonetheless. Everything else, regarding who feels what about which pitcher confidence-wise, is all filler.
I can see where the Yanks go with a 5 man rotation by giving everyone in the roation, except Sabathia one turn off and possibly two, as long as Hughes and Nova continue what they’ve done over the last month. I can also see Garcia making a backdated DL trip to make sure that cut has heale properly. That’s a lot of friction dragging across a fresh cut and can make it worse.
Garcia is hardly the first pitcher/player to cut himself…whether it was cutting meat, blindly digging through a kitchen drawer looking for something or cutting open a dinner roll to spread butter. Unless you’ve never had to do these things for yourself because mom did it for you, everyone has done the same thing.
Why should Nova’s turn be skipped for AJ, the 5th starter.
Then Hughes has to go on 5 days rest.
All for the sake of Aj, just skip his turn, maybe he gets the message.
as much as people don’t like veterans at the ends of their contracts or aging veterans in general, the yankees have a nice competitive dynamic with jeter, posada, garcia, colon, burnett, chavez etc and nunez, hughes, nova, gardner, robertson etc trying to establish themselves
if they add montero the competitive mix will be complete.
the internal competition helps the team by keeping everyone sharp and fighting for playing time.
players are catching on that if they perform well it’s hard to keep them out of the lineup .
Hopefully AJ warmed up.
Not surprising that Dobbler looked really bad.
Understandable, but disappointing.
lmao seconds

If there is a bright side to these rainouts it’s that most of them will be played in September when the rosters will be expanded.
The Yanks have six starting pitchers plus other pitchers in the minors that could start or be used as relievers with the expanded roster in September, so DH’s in September should not be too much of a problem.
Not surprising. Torrential rain at the Jersey Shore, about an hour south of the city.
It’s the right move because it’s just awful out and it’s not going to get any better……….
Ugh…..
I guess that means everyone moves up a day as I can’t see AJ being skipped
I can’t think of any other time they can play it besides a double header in their last trip to the stadium which is right at the end of the year before Boston comes to town.
Yep….I have tix for the rained out July 8 game, resked as a night game Sept. 22. So perhaps that will be a day-night doubleheader.
Their going to have to play 10 games in 9 days to end the season and likely a DH before Boston comes to town.
LGY,
From the last thread…..clearly you need a hit off the objective pipe..
Yanks need to make some hay the next 2 weeks because the Sept schedule is rough.
At least it gives them sort of a day off, can travel and arrive well rested.
The one thing that might help is if it is after the rosters expand, that would take some weight off the bullpen.
Take Montero to KC!

Unlike Ozzie Guillen, Girardi and Cashman actually DEFEND their players instead of throwing them under the bus when they are struggling.
A novel concept and one I’m sure the players appreciate.
Shame -
Your last post is right on.
No, Boston is in Massachusetts
The Red Sawx are in Seattle
I wonder if Garcia will show reporters his injury or if it’ll be taped up all the time? Really, really suspicious of the timing of that announcement.
I guess there’s a little Olver Stone fan in all of us!
Rain out is good because that’s one fewer game that Alex misses.
I assume CC will get back on regular routine and start Wednesday, which would make it AJ, Colon, CC, Nova and Phil coming up.
Arrow thing —>
Remember Bobby Ojeda?
Didn’t he sever the tip of a finger trimming bushes?
Why should Nova’s turn be skipped for AJ, the 5th starter.
Then Hughes has to go on 5 days rest.
All for the sake of Aj, just skip his turn, maybe he gets the message.
with a 5 man rotation by giving
****That should read 5 man rotation with 6 pitchers****
I would have no objection to AJ getting skipped. Just don’t see it happening
I thought Boston was in Massachusetts……sorry, could not resist..
as much as people don’t like veterans at the ends of their contracts or aging veterans in general, the yankees have a nice competitive dynamic with jeter, posada, garcia, colon, burnett, chavez etc and nunez, hughes, nova, gardner, robertson etc trying to establish themselves
if they add montero the competitive mix will be complete.
the internal competition helps the team by keeping everyone sharp and fighting for playing time.
players are catching on that if they perform well it’s hard to keep them out of the lineup .
betty tells someone to blow off scumbag and it wasn’t me…NEXT======>>>>>>>>
