Burnett finally gets a win in K.C. series opener

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Aug 15, 2011 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

A.J. Burnett’s finally won a game. He allowed 10 hits through 5.2 innings, but the Yankees lineup picked up the slack in a 7-4 win against the Royals. Burnett hadn’t won since June 29. He allowed nothing but singles, and all of the runs he gave up came in a three-run fifth. After Burnett blew an early lead, the Yankees got it back with a three-run sixth before pulling away with runs in the seventh and eighth. Brett Gardner and Derek Jeter combined to reach base six times and drive in five runs. Jeter’s two-run triple put the Yankees in front for good.

Mo looked like Mo tonight. Touched 94 with the 4 seam and the cutter had more movement. Great game tonight and great start to the roadie

  4. Yogi Mantle August 15th, 2011 at 11:30 pm

Loved the broken bat. Haven’t been seeing that much the last couple of years. That was sweet.

“Jeter:High school idol not childhood idol.”

    LOL, that was a classic

  10. xcv August 15th, 2011 at 11:37 pm

absolutely stole this one. anytime you only scored 7 runs with knucklehead burnett pitching and got a win you stole one.

  11. Yankee Trader August 15th, 2011 at 11:37 pm

    Good night all.

  12. Purenyyankee August 15th, 2011 at 11:47 pm

The guys we can count on came through as usual. The headcase continues to pitch like a stooge as usual.

  13. West Coast Yankee Fan August 15th, 2011 at 11:48 pm

Great game by Martin, throwing out two base runners against the team leading the league in steals and a great catch behind the plate. He’s a very good defensive catcher, that’s clear.

  14. seconds August 15th, 2011 at 11:51 pm

so burnett thinks he’s tipping his pitches, hmm

  15. Yogi Mantle August 15th, 2011 at 11:51 pm

Is AJ pitching for the Angels tonight?

  16. Yogi Mantle August 15th, 2011 at 11:53 pm

Jeter was the one to tell AJ about him showing something. It wouldn’t be the first time for an experienced pitcher to do that. Pettitte had a problem with tipping his pitches a couple of seasons ago.

  17. G-C August 15th, 2011 at 11:57 pm

    Jeter up to .283/.344/.370

Numbers notwithstanding, he’s back to looking like a really good hitter again. You have confidence that he’s going to drive the ball when he’s at the plate instead of rolling over weakly to short. It’s a wonderful thing to see again.

How nice would it be to see him get to .300? With the way he’s swinging the bat, I wouldn’t put it past him.

  18. seconds August 15th, 2011 at 11:58 pm

“he basically told me what I asked him”, AJ said.

  19. seconds August 15th, 2011 at 11:59 pm

people had been saying jeter constantly grounds out weakly, and I would always say, he grounds out daily. Now, not so much.

Well the Yankees signed 8 out of their top ten, less @2 Stafford (medical issues) and @10 (school) plus some very interesting hs players such as James, Sharp, Camarena and Hebert. A lot of HS players with high upside. Results won’t be known for a few years.

  21. 98NYY August 16th, 2011 at 12:10 am

Chad…I just read over comments and didn’t see where anyone caught the Mantle nuggets…not even Yogi Mantle…in your last post you noted on this date Mickey hit a homer from each side of the plate for the second time…the year? 1948…I think that was a typo…maybe 1958?

  22. LGY August 16th, 2011 at 12:11 am

Jeter is having one of his best years of his career vs LHP and has been on an absolute rampage vs them since coming off the DL. Unfortunately, he is still below what he was last year vs RHP. However, he has looked better overall so hopefully he can carry over more improvement vs righties through the rest of the season.

  23. LGY August 16th, 2011 at 12:13 am

So the Yankees gave up their 1st round pick for Soriano and then didn’t sign their 2nd rounder?

    smh.

    ——–

It did get a mention as Mantle didn’t play in ’48. You must have missed the post… it wasn’t by me, but I did read it.

  25. G-C August 16th, 2011 at 12:17 am

Why in the world has this orgo had such a terrible track record with drafting damaged goods pitchers?

They didn’t sign Scott Bittle who was a major overdraft anyway a couple years back because of “injury concerns.”

Looks like they wasted a pick on Jeremy Bleich (another college lefty).

    Now this?

  26. 98NYY August 16th, 2011 at 12:17 am

Martin did do a great job tonight but KC is not leading the league in steals…they are amazingly tied with the Yanks who have a better average in stolen base percentage.

  27. Bo knows August 16th, 2011 at 12:18 am

Stafford was listed signed for 400 thou and then had problems with the medicals. The Yankees retain comp for second pic next year ala Murphy.

  28. LGY August 16th, 2011 at 12:18 am

blake’s boy Norris signed with the Jays for 2 mill.

  29. Bo knows August 16th, 2011 at 12:23 am

I’m happier with Murphy over Bittle who seemed to be a one trick pony. Bliech had injury concerns prior to the draft so it was a gamble. The Yankees are now spending a lot on HS players, it’s a high risk gamble but a Willams type each year would mark that year’s draft a success.

  30. BD (Boston Dave) August 16th, 2011 at 12:24 am

as Gerrit Cole signs – an interview he did recently (this part regarding the Yankees):

“Do you look up to any past or present big leaguers and model yourself after them at all?

Gerrit – I really loved watching Roger Clemens pitch when he was in his prime. He was such a bulldog on the mound and I try to replicate that mentality, that aggressiveness the best I can. Obviously without throwing bats at other people. But he was someone that I liked to watch and I like to watch Mariano Rivera because it’s kind of polar opposites when you look at a guy who’s really fired up and really emotional versus a guy who’s consistent and really disciplined and just goes about his work. You try to combine the best of both worlds and see what you get out of that.

A couple Yankees there – are you a Yankees fan or are these just your players because they’re Hall of Fame caliber guys?

Gerrit – Because they’re Hall of Fame caliber guys, but my dad went to high school in New York and he was a big New York Yankees fan and passed it on down to me when I was growing up, so we’ve been Yankees fans for quite a long time, which kind of made the decision [in 2008] that much tougher.”

  31. GreenBeret7 August 16th, 2011 at 12:24 am

It was 1955 that Mantle had his homer one each side for the second time

  32. BD (Boston Dave) August 16th, 2011 at 12:24 am

wouldn’t have minded the Yanks spending that 2nd rd pick on Matt Purke instead.

    oh well.

  33. LGY August 16th, 2011 at 12:25 am

Looks like the biggest bonus the Yankees gave out this year was $1.1 million and that was the only one above 1 million.

  34. BD (Boston Dave) August 16th, 2011 at 12:27 am

Red Sox gave $2.5M to a HS catcher at #26

Yanks looking like the more frugal team these days.

  35. Bo knows August 16th, 2011 at 12:27 am

Toronto has money to burn post the Rios/Wells sleights of hand.

  36. JobaTipsHisCap August 16th, 2011 at 12:32 am

cashman should just move on AJ

  37. Bo knows August 16th, 2011 at 12:35 am

I really like the Bichette, Cote, Sharp, James signings. Thinking out of the box rather than going with the general ratings.

  38. LGY August 16th, 2011 at 12:42 am

Very disappointing how cheap the Yankees are when it comes to the draft, especially when they could so easily exploit the system.

  39. Vineyard Yankee August 16th, 2011 at 12:43 am

Another yawner by Burnett. He is lucky to escape with giving up only 3 runs.

    5.2 IP
    10 H
    3 R
    ERA 4.76

Nothing new from our new # 6 SP. A good thing the BP was well rested tonight to carry the win home for him.

  40. Bo knows August 16th, 2011 at 12:47 am

True dat. They seem to have a 6 mil budget. They were under six this year according to Flandrup twitter. Pittsburgh probably spent twice that on two players.

  41. fantasygame101 August 16th, 2011 at 1:02 am

cano and jeter (dp) save AJ. If it went through, AJ was done and who knows what the outcome will be

  42. pft2 August 16th, 2011 at 1:05 am

Only 1-2 draft picks per team (on average) will make it to the MLB as a league average or better player each year, but those who do, are worth a lot in value (production-cost). An All Star quality player is easily worth 50+ million to a team.

So spending 10-12 million a year does not seem like an investment that is too large to make given the payoffs. The Yankees spending only 6 million or less is puzzling.

My guess is they are adhering to the guidelines as close as possible to avoid future punishment (higher revenue sharing, luxury tax, etc). The Red Sox have no worries so long as Uncle Bud is in charge.

Of course, the Yankees seem to do more with international free agents than the Red Sox, although the Red Sox have been making more of an effort in Latin America in recent years than they have in the past.

  43. GreenBeret7 August 16th, 2011 at 1:06 am

Blame the offense. If the Yanks had hit 8 home runs, it wouldn’t have mattered.

Jesus…lets find someting else to whine about after a win.

  44. Vineyard Yankee August 16th, 2011 at 2:56 am

Burnett had a 13 to 1 lead recently and couldn’t hang on to make it through 5 and get a W. Just because the Yankees won the game tonight doesn’t mean that all is rosy and cozy now with Burnett, the career .500 pitcher.
