No Rodriguez in Twins series opener

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Aug 18, 2011 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

As expected, Alex Rodriguez is not in the lineup or even on the roster tonight against the Twins. He is here, though, and pregame he went through fairly intense fielding drills with Mick Kelleher standing behind him at third base. Rob Thomson basically stood at the plate, took soft tosses from about three feet away, and pulled sharp ground balls and line drives to Rodriguez on the left side of the infield.

Derek Jeter SS
Curtis Granderson CF
Mark Teixeira 1B
Robinson Cano 2B
Nick Swisher DH
Andruw Jones RF
Eduardo Nunez 3B
Francisco Cervelli C
Brett Gardner LF

    Andruw Jones…..ugh. :?

  3. Irreverent Discourse August 18th, 2011 at 4:57 pm

Apparently Mauer is playing right field tonight…

  4. blake August 18th, 2011 at 4:57 pm

    Erin,

That’s it….the more we complain about Andrew the better chance he hits a homer……Jonesy stinks!

    blake-exactly ;)

Girardi has to lodge a protest whenever a disputed call goes against the team…it doesn’t cost anything, does it?

And I am for getting rid of the Girardi clown even before this game happened, this just adds to my list of Girardi blunders that cost us games. WOuld a protest have mattered? I dunno, but it would be interesting to how it would have went if JG actually did what he was supposed to do. Guess he couldn’t find his binder where it says, “If call goes against the team, protest before next pitch even if the call is clear”.

what does it hurt to protest?

Those called strikes on Jorge were BS too, but we’ve seen Mo get the benefit of those as well. Not sure with bases loaded tho.

Lefty so Jones starts and Chavy sits, no surprise. GTLU would not have been very difficult this year.

The ground rules at Kaufman Stadium in K.C. can’t possibly be more complicated than the ones at Tropicana Field in St. Pete.

Ledger_Yankees Garcia no longer wearing a band aid and his cut looks healed. Hasn’t tried splitter yet, though if he does today, he’ll likely go Sat. #nyy

I might have sacrified a little speed for more defense at third and put Chavez in at third base. Span or Revere will bunt Nunez to death.

I want some visual evidence of Pavano shaking hands with former
Yankees on the field before any of the 4 games this weekend.
If there are none, then that is a clear sign nobody that played with him
    cares enough to say hello!!

  13. UnKnown August 18th, 2011 at 5:08 pm

In Minnesota here they have been talking for awhile now moving Mauer to the outfield. So I guess they finally did it.

  14. Shame Spencer August 18th, 2011 at 5:09 pm

I asked a little earlier but it probably got caught in the raucous..but I’m still curious, does any independent group keep track of missed/incorrect calls? I know the umps keep track but I wasn’t sure if that information was public.

  15. MTU August 18th, 2011 at 5:15 pm

  17. Tabbert August 18th, 2011 at 5:20 pm

tex is a absolute joke of a 3 hole hitter.

Jeter – nearing the .300 mark
    Grandy- nearing the .280 mark
Then the big bat of tex is .240
Then arod is a .300 hitter
then cano is a .300 hitter

basic knowledge would show that the .240 hitter does not belong in the MIDDLE of guys hitting .280 or better. Girardi is clueless and so worried about players feelings its sickening. If you don’t produce, you get moved down. That’s the way its been since coach pitch. If posada got benched for only hitting 9 points worse than tex, then why on gods green earth is tex being rewarded for sucking and batting 3rd? Sure, he is great at defense… but you don’t shape your lineup based on defense. By that logic, Yadier molina, and brett gardner would be the ideal 3-4 hitters for any team in baseball. Get over your loyalty towards players, and do whats best for the team.

I think Axisa must read Lohud because he just added a post basically exactly about what we were talking about this morning regarding the draft……its pretty good anyway.

Lol, well that’s the thing MTU, if someone started compiling how much it’s possibly effecting the outcome of seasons (division races, etc) I feel like it’d be harder to ignore. I’m not smart enough to figure out how someone would go about doing this I was sorta just hoping someone else was and already took care of business :)

Mauer is in RF because they have too many injured players, Kubel had to leave for personal matters, and their AAA outfielders isn’t going to make it to the game today.

    Their bench is missing tonight.

In one corner, wearing the red trunks and the current champion, the ARod Contract. In the other corner, wearing the blue trunks and the contender for the crown, the Mauer Contract.

The champ is old and has 6 years left, the contender still young and has 7 years to go…money left about the same…the contender’s punches are pretty weak right now, but the champ has trouble staying in the ring…close call at the moment but I think the champ retains the crown…

If Mauer can’t catch then I take Arods contract. Mauer can’t stay healthy either and would be a no power bad defense corner outfielder……he has 1 HR this year.

nobody seems to worry that Tex has dropped from a .300 hitter to a .240 hitter with the Yanks. His first year was okay average-wise but if his bat has slowed down this much in his prime, I just see it as another Giami contract, and Giambi I sorta remember batting 5th.

  60. Tabbert August 18th, 2011 at 6:25 pm

I’m not worried about tex’s overall production, but i think he is being valued way to higher by girardi. Tex is playing like a dan uggla, mark reynolds, adam dunn, type masher with that batting average. Yes, he can put up 30 homers, and drive in 100… but when your leadoff guys get 7 hits in a game and your going 0-4, your obviously a rally killer. Mashers with low averages like the guys i named above have no place in batting third in a lineup with as many .280- .300 hitters as we have. Sure, he will get some big 3 run blast in some games in the middle of june… but do you really want a .240 hitter batting 3rd for us come october? i sure don’t. I love tex, and his glove is amazing.. but you cant bat a guy third because you like him and he plays good D. Fact is, Tex is only batting 9 points higher than posada ( who’s career is obviously over) so i don’t understand the double standard. Posada gets benched, but tex gets to keep hitting 3rd or 4th? Absolute joke of managing, and that’s what we call playing favorites in the clubhouse.

  61. blake August 18th, 2011 at 6:29 pm

    Tabbert,

That’s over the top……but their is a thread of truth to what you’re saying. He should hit 5th or 6th vs RHP…….he’s a fine 3 hitter against lefties.

  62. blake August 18th, 2011 at 6:30 pm

Tex is hitting .295 vs LHP

  63. luis August 18th, 2011 at 6:31 pm

    Hi everyone,

MTU, How are you, saw the pictures you posted from the devil’s whatever

I like Joba too, hope he gets a chance to start again, becuase when you have TJ surgery usually you start throwing a lot harder, besides he already has four pitches.

    Tyler,

Yes, it’s going to shorten the game incredibly if Joba stays as a reliever

  67. luis August 18th, 2011 at 6:40 pm

Well……I’m happy because i’m gonna watch the game tonight for the first time since monday, i also had trouble with the router because we had a surge in the electricity and it burned the thing!!, that’s life in the third world!.

Aside from that….things are very dicey here, the last thing they are planning is to take the international reserves of the country to Cuba, Iran and China, i guess we are never gonna see them again….But family is fine and healthy which is a plus down here.

  68. Tabbert August 18th, 2011 at 6:41 pm

I would much rather have robbie cano bat 3rd vs lefties over tex any day of the week… don’t care what splits you can come up with. Fact is, at the end of the day… tex is a .240 hitter. So, he should be hitting 5th or sixth depending on if were facing a righty of lefty.

    Jeter
    Grandy
    Cano
    Arod
    Tex
    Swish
    DH
    Martin
    Gardy

    Gardy
    Jeter
    Granderson
    Arod
    Cano
    Tex
    Swisher
    Dh
    Martin

Those imo are the best lineup’s we can roll out there. Neither which puts a .240 hitter in a key contact hitters spot.

  69. kd August 18th, 2011 at 6:41 pm

cc bounces back tonight. mark it down.

arod should dh until he gets his legs sorted out. he’s a better bat than andruw or jorge, at least i really hope

    Tex

    Vs . LhP. .295/.370/.548/.918
    Rhp. .227/.333/..482/.816

He’s always been a better RH hitter……but its getting more pronounced

  72. luis August 18th, 2011 at 6:46 pm

    luis,
Good to see you. This afternoon’s thread was a complete mess because they’re back at it again. In the mean time, Go Yankees!

  74. Tabbert August 18th, 2011 at 6:58 pm

    blake-

splits are great an all…. but when grandy is a legit .280 hitter, gardy and jete, cano, arod all with legit chances to finish with .300 batting averages. It seems very silly to put a .240 hitter in the middle of all of those guys.. much less move a .300 hitter down in the 9 hole for good.

A batting average is a overall showing of the quality of the hitter. The higher the average, most likely the better the hitter. You don’t need me to explain this to you. I get the splits on tex.. but the fact remains overall he is just a .240 masher. If anything, the fact that his numbers are so spread out vs lhp and rhp should be a scary sign. I don’t want a hitter whom cant seem to figure out a certrain type of pitcher in the middle of my lineup. What happens when the bullpen becomes a factor? You have a guy who cant hit righties hitting 3rd in your lineup again. That’s why i believe he is best suited for the 5-6 hole depending on the righty/ lefty matchup. Put your higher BA, and more consistant hitters higher in your lineup, and the low average mashers a little bit lower down.

  75. luis August 18th, 2011 at 6:59 pm

    Hi Tom!,

Yes, i read some of it, things are getting a bit out of hand IMO….It’s a shame that the level of civilty has gone to such lows….But as you say, we still got the yankees!!

  76. luis August 18th, 2011 at 7:04 pm

    Blake,

I totally agree with your assestment on Texeira….I think Tex’s lefthanded swing is a bit loopy, plus the uppercut thing that doesn’t help, i wonder if he should try to bat righthanded all the time

  77. blake August 18th, 2011 at 7:05 pm

ugh….looks like the crappy home video broadcast for SWB tonight.

  78. blake August 18th, 2011 at 7:08 pm

    tabbert,

I really can’t argue….my only point is that Tex is a good overall hitter right handed…..he’s much more balanced and has a much flatter swing plane that allows him to use the entire field and keep the bat in the hitting zone longer. His left handed swing is an issue that likely only going to worsen as he ages…..I’m hoping he and Long try and address it this winter.

Is it me or are pitchers returning from TJS much sooner than they used to?

I heard on the radio that Brian Wilson is headed to Alabama to see a certain doctor.

Maybe it’s from all those criss-cross things he does after closing out games? :P
