The Yankees have claimed left-handed reliever Aaron Laffey from the Mariners, and Mark Feinsand reports that he’ll be in Minneapolis tomorrow. Could be looking at four roster moves before tomorrow’s game: Add Laffey, activated Alex Rodriguez and two moves to make room for them.

Brett Gardner LF
Derek Jeter SS
Curtis Granderson CF
Mark Teixeira 1B
Robinson Cano 2B
Nick Swisher RF
Eric Chavez 3B
Jorge Posada DH
Russell Martin C

It’s time to DFA Posada and to open up the DH spot to more deserving players.

JackCurryYES ARod said 2day’s workout was very encouraging. Wasn’t timid running the bases and reacted at “game speed” on defense

It appears that I understand them far better than you do.

Nothing you’ve said has indicated this.

Quite to the contrary. You see things only through the prism of statistical analysis which is indelibly flawed. You don’t really understand the game, and you have continually proved this by decrying the defensive prowess of Russell Martin. It doesn’t have any relevance at all what Matt Wieters does in the non-Yankee universe.

As an example, comparative statistics as to what percentage of base runners a catcher throws out is skewed greatly by the pitchers a catcher works with and their ability or inability to hold runners on.

You also fail to understand that Martin’s value is not defined on this team by how well he hits. That’s not why he is here.

A lineup and a lefty named Laffey. A nice little ring to it.

Only question now is can he do the job ?

JackCurryYES ARod said he needs to see how he recovers 2moro b4 predicting if he will play. My hunch is he plays in Minny

  7. Jerkface August 19th, 2011 at 4:51 pm

Then you’ve completely misunderstood the dynasty years, and the advantage the yankees have built up for the past 15 by having above average catchers. Even Thurman Munson was a better offensive AND defensive catcher than Russel Martin. Martin isn’t close to where he was as a rookie or his sophmore year, and he isn’t close to his peak defensively. Matt Wieters is relevant because he is a better catcher than Russel Martin. Russel Martin might be the best catcher on the yankees but he isn’t the best catcher in the majors. Just like Brett Gardner is the best LFer on the yankees but you’d still want Matt Holliday to replace him.

Basically Martin is only a great defensive catcher when compared to catchers on the yankees/in the system, but the Yankees aren’t playing against themselves, they are playing against the rest of the majors and running out a top tier team unit is how you get wins.

Martin should get backed up by a better offensive catcher and play less.

The problem is the second starter behind a re-signed Sabathia in 2012 in my opinion. Banuelos and Betances are not the answer short term, Burnett is not, Colon is not, Garcia is not, Nova is not and Hughes most likely is a three or four.

    ——-

Wait a second. Did you just say that Hughes is most likely a 3 or 4 next year???

Haven’t you been basically stalking Betsy for holding a similar opinion of Hughes’ future?

Jeter is going to need a full day off before the weekend is over.

IMO, the upcoming transactions will be Garcia goes on DL and Noesi is sent down to make
room for ARod and the new lefty

WHOA! Calm down guy…you didn’t get the memo? Brett Gardner is a superstar offensive, and probably the best defensive outfielder in the game. Matt Holiday can’t hold BG’s sneakers for him.

Chances are Laffey is a situational LH facing 1-2 batters and still have Boone Logan available. Let’s see how it plays out in September. If Laffey shows well maybe he can be put on the playoff roster replacing Burnett.
Would hate to see Burnett kept over Cory Wade who has done well since June. With health and good outings, C.C., Nova, Hughes, Colon, and Garcia and more than enough for starters in the playoffs with one going to the bullpen as a long reliever if needed.

I’m sorry that I was not able to monitor the blog all day. I’m scrolling through the posts from today and it caught my attention.

I enjoy when Betsy posts and you have basically been stalking her so I decided to respond and point out your hypocrisy. It’s a blog. There is no time limit on when you can or can’t respond to a post.

    Blake/MTU

Montero’s biggest defensive issue may be at being a little weak/slow with the glove to the barehand side of pitches. Not the guy you want catching Burnett.

Hi there, Vineyard Yankee. I’ve been trying to get a message to you lately.

A couple days ago I said hello and you didn’t respond but then were texting things for your friend to say to me on the blog? And you haven’t said anything here about it. Did you forget?

I’m curious why you haven’t responded, Vineyard. You texted things to your pal about me but then never said anything here?

But anyway, if you did see the original message, you’re now aware that Irreverent Discourse couldn’t go back and erase a link he had posted in his handle, as you’d accused him of doing.

So will you cease that line of attack and stop all the manni/blog accusations? It would make this a less antagonistic place.

I enjoy the gossip breaks, Muppet talk, and the Twitter updates. They provide a much-appreciated break from the constant name calling, saber rattling, posturing, and all around snottiness.

And men say that we women can’t get along with each other. Sheesh! What with so many of the women folk absconding from the blog, the hormonal balance is all out of whack. There’s too much testosterone flowing around here ;)
