Burnett reaches new low in Yankees loss

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Aug 20, 2011 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Last season was considered a low point for A.J. Burnett, but he might be sinking lower. After tonight’s 9-4 debacle in Minnesota, Burnett is 9-10 with a 4.96 ERA. On this date last season, he was 9-11 with a 4.80. Facing a lineup with six hitters batting below .250 — and only one hitter with double digit home runs — Burnett lasted only an inning and two-thirds. He was charged with seven runs on five hits, three walks and two wild pitches. Television cameras seemed to catch him cursing at Joe Girardi as he was taken out of the game. The Yankees lineup scored only once against Twins starter Francisco Liriano, and they failed to gain a game on Boston, which also lost.

Now for the post game coverup…

  2. MG August 20th, 2011 at 10:28 pm

it will be an interesting press conference with Girardi…

  3. mick August 20th, 2011 at 10:29 pm

only interesting if they are truthful.

  4. jacksquat August 20th, 2011 at 10:30 pm

There can be no defense of AJ after tonight.

  5. Yesmydog August 20th, 2011 at 10:30 pm

Nah, Girardi is going to play his usual “We’ll work it out in the office” garbage

  6. Betsy August 20th, 2011 at 10:32 pm

It’s amazing that he actually has a higher ERA now than he did at this point last year

  7. blake August 20th, 2011 at 10:32 pm

    expect lots of spin….

  8. NYY fan in NH August 20th, 2011 at 10:33 pm

If AJ sank any lower he’d be so dense he would turn into a black hole and suck the whole Yankee universe into it. That’s how much I think of him!

  9. MG August 20th, 2011 at 10:33 pm

Singleton just ripped Burnett, that’s probably how the whole team feels about him right now…

  10. NYY fan in NH August 20th, 2011 at 10:34 pm

Wasn’t AJ 6-2 at the start of last season then the slow implosion began?

  11. Carlo August 20th, 2011 at 10:35 pm

The team is 23-13 since the asb. Take away the rivera blips and the burnett starts and its been a sick 2nd half to date. 23-13 is pretty darn good regardless.

  12. Betsy August 20th, 2011 at 10:35 pm

It’s not so much what Joe says because I don’t think he’s going to reveal much, but those media folk inside the clubhouse will be able to gauge how he really feels based on what they see from him……..In other words, his body language may very well betray his words

  13. Carlo August 20th, 2011 at 10:36 pm

MG – what did singleton say?

  14. luis August 20th, 2011 at 10:36 pm

Please could you relay any meaningful info coming out from the press conference, i’m really curious how are they going to spin it.

  15. Yank 97 August 20th, 2011 at 10:37 pm

This is above Girardi. If Cashman tells him that he has to keep AJ in the rotation, Girardi has no control over it.

I highly highly doubt Girardi wants him in there after his performances and the way he has reacted 3 of the last 4 times Girardi has come to take the ball from him. There is a difference between being ‘emotional’ and being professional.

Singleton just killed him on the postgame

  16. blake August 20th, 2011 at 10:37 pm

That was kinda one of the problems last year….the Yankees won 95 games in spite of AJ losing 15 himself and putting them in a position to lose several more. He has these starts where he just gives them zero chance to win and then the bullpen has to bridge 7+ innings…..you not only lose that nights game….but it can have ramifications for several games after that.

  17. MG August 20th, 2011 at 10:39 pm

    Carlo August 20th, 2011 at 10:36 pm
MG – what did singleton say?
    ———————————
Singleton said Burnett should start blaming himself instead of anything else.

  18. stuart a August 20th, 2011 at 10:39 pm

aj gets more chances then any cat.

    the guy deserves no goodwill.

one of the worst free agent signings ever in baseball. not the worst but a really bad signing. pavano at least got hirt, aj can’t even get hurt.

  19. Betsy August 20th, 2011 at 10:41 pm

    What do you mean?

I think Joe is really angry……….it’s obvious

Couldn’t agree more…….last year we didn’t have options, now we have, but as Yank 97 just said, thats a decision above Girardi’s head….

  21. I Like Inge August 20th, 2011 at 10:41 pm

LOL …. at Girardi!!! That’s a funny dude.

  22. stuart a August 20th, 2011 at 10:41 pm

aj does not have the mental capacity to blame himself. he is so deep in denial it is scary.

aj is making the yanks look like clowns. 2 sets of rules. 1 set for the guys making big big money named aj and another set of rules for everyone else.

    sad.

  23. Betsy August 20th, 2011 at 10:41 pm

Wow, sarcastic Joe – “we had a fistfight”…………Holy cow. This is great stuff.

  24. AZ88 August 20th, 2011 at 10:42 pm

LOL Girardi is ticked off. Wow.

Wonder if Zillo prepped him for this media session, with blessings from Cashman, of course.

  25. I Like Inge August 20th, 2011 at 10:42 pm

Yo dude is heated. Poor Jack Curry is getting blasted for being the Yes reporter. Damn he went off on him.

  26. blake August 20th, 2011 at 10:42 pm

What Girardi should do is just leave AJ out there one night….one of these night when he’s already lost the game in the 2nd inning just leave him out there to give up 8 more runs and at least save the bullpen.

  27. JobaTipsHisCap August 20th, 2011 at 10:42 pm

Joe is angry, do u buy his post game comments?

  28. Carlo August 20th, 2011 at 10:42 pm

MG – thank you. They have covered for this mope for too long. From the black eye to the garbage performances to the bllsht on the mound when he’s being lifted, the time has come to let that bus just run him over.

  29. Betsy August 20th, 2011 at 10:42 pm

Oh brother, now Joe sounds like Cashman with the “AJ is being picked on”, but I really think it’s because he’s steamed and just doesn’t want to talk about it. He’d rather say this stuff than get on AJ publicly

  30. hman23 August 20th, 2011 at 10:43 pm

This guy has no business being in the rotation at this point. He is by far the worst starter on this team. Forget his salary. A sunk cost at this point. Once Garcia comes back, I’d move AJ in the bullpen. Is there really any question? The Nova/Hughes debate should not even be on the table. I would trust them and every other starter before him. And he better not see even a sniff of a start in the playoffs.

  31. pat August 20th, 2011 at 10:43 pm

Giving the fans or media a pound of AJ’s flesh isn’t in the teams best interest so Girardi isn’t going there.

  32. MG August 20th, 2011 at 10:43 pm

Girardi just got very defensive about the whole situation, denies Burnett showed him up and that he went into the clubhouse to look at the pitch to Mauer that Burnett thought struck him out.

Girardi is clearly very touchy about this, he doesn’t want to take this public, that’s not surprising for him.

  33. JobaTipsHisCap August 20th, 2011 at 10:43 pm

Anyone in here is still behind aj?

  34. luis August 20th, 2011 at 10:43 pm

    What is Joe saying??

  35. DocTodd August 20th, 2011 at 10:43 pm

Girardi is sticking up for AJ…..just dump the bum already, they are still waiting for him to turn it around…LOL

  36. Betsy August 20th, 2011 at 10:44 pm

I have a feeling Joe laid into AJ tonight……..not just for the BS stuff, but for having to be pulled back onto the bench to watch the reliver clean up his mess and then for leaving the bench immediately after his runs scored.

  37. stuart a August 20th, 2011 at 10:44 pm

thye need to do an intervention on yankee management over aj. these guys are so delusional it is scary.

imagine putting yourself on the line for the hillbilly ….

  38. 4time August 20th, 2011 at 10:44 pm

If Burnett has a black eye in the postgame, this time we know how it happened ;)

This media session is so fabricated. Joe looks like he wants to kill someone, yet he is defending AJ. Joe is highly annoyed.

It is now up to Cash to do the right thing. This BS can’t go on any longer.

  39. Ken Phelps August 20th, 2011 at 10:44 pm

I don’t buy Joe! Cash man is forcing him to defend this clown and you can tell he doesn’t want to.

  40. bruceb August 20th, 2011 at 10:45 pm

Bad show Girardi. Jack Curry is entitled to ask tough questions; that’s his job. I wish the case on AJ Burnett was “closed” but, sadly, it’s still very much open. No need to get defensive about it. The guy is letting the manager down, the team down and the fans down. At least say it the way it is.

  41. Betsy August 20th, 2011 at 10:45 pm

Luis, he said, very sarcastically, that he and AJ got in a fistfight. He sort of defended AJ like Cash did, you know – AJ is being picked on – but I don’t buy it. He was spitting fire and he just simply doesn’t want to take it public. I think Joe felt like strangling AJ

  42. 4time August 20th, 2011 at 10:45 pm

Joe said he went into the tunnel to look at video of the pitch that AJ threw? LMAO

    This is hilarious.

  43. JobaTipsHisCap August 20th, 2011 at 10:45 pm

Lol, I wish aj got black eyes.

  44. Betsy August 20th, 2011 at 10:46 pm

He’s not sticking up for AJ – he’s doing the best he can not to take this public. He’s not upset at Jack Curry – he’s upset period.

company line nonsense on the postgame? just a bad start? did not have his hook tonight!!!

this is a farce at this point. literally jo je reyes is as good of an option as aj… jo je reyes is really bad.

send aj to his hometown baltimore so he can prove himself and beat the yanks!!!!!!!!!

  49. DocTodd August 20th, 2011 at 10:48 pm

Billy Martin would have had to be held back by the whole team….he would have torn AJ a new one!

  50. Ken Phelps August 20th, 2011 at 10:48 pm

” I’m not going to beat myself up for it… I’m getting my work in… Going to get better”

    Really???

  51. luis August 20th, 2011 at 10:48 pm

    Betsy,

I would never expect Girardi to throw a player under the bus, it just not his style….But he is obviously mad….hope they rattle things down inside.

    By the way, thank you

  52. Ken Phelps August 20th, 2011 at 10:49 pm

    Excuses excuses……, it’s always somebody else’s fault… Tonight it’s the umpire. Really

  53. stuart a August 20th, 2011 at 10:50 pm

aj is worse then kenny rogers was with the yanks…

so nothing changed right? ground hog day every time the hillbilly pitches.

they refuse to pull the plug on this clown, unfriggin believable…

  54. MG August 20th, 2011 at 10:50 pm

  55. DocTodd August 20th, 2011 at 10:50 pm

    Singleton is dead on…

  56. Betsy August 20th, 2011 at 10:50 pm

Luis, you’re welcome. I would not want to be AJ tonight…….and Joe has every right to be mad.

The 6 man is going the way of the dodo bird after the Baltimore DH……..

  57. Betsy August 20th, 2011 at 10:51 pm

    I love Singleton, always have

  58. blake August 20th, 2011 at 10:51 pm

It does nobody any good for Girardi to trash AJ in a press conference……they keep things in house.

They should pull him from the rotation though when Freddy is healthy just because he’s not very good…..It’s almost September now and the best 5 starters have to pitch. AJ isn’t one of the best 5 starters right now.

  59. MG August 20th, 2011 at 10:51 pm

Burnett didn’t blame the umpire, he said it’s tough to get a call when you are all over the place.

He gets another start on Friday because of the doubleheader on Saturday, then they have to make a decision on the rotation going forward.

  60. Niblick August 20th, 2011 at 10:51 pm

Binder Joe defending AJ in his post-game remarks. Claimed that AJ went back to the clubhouse to look at a pitch on video. Who is he kidding?

  61. West Coast Yankee Fan August 20th, 2011 at 10:51 pm

What a liar Girardi is and he got caught. He said he went in the clubhouse to watch the video of the strike call. But Burnett said nothing about that.

Good job by Jack Curry to ask the questions and shame on Girardi for his rude and ismissive demeanor.

  62. blake August 20th, 2011 at 10:51 pm

    What’s Singleton saying?

  63. West Coast Yankee Fan August 20th, 2011 at 10:52 pm

    Girardi just flat out lied.

  64. West Coast Yankee Fan August 20th, 2011 at 10:52 pm

    Singleton didn’t buy it.

  65. MG August 20th, 2011 at 10:52 pm

blake, Singleton said he’s old school and (1) that Burnett showed up Girardi and (2) that Burnett needs to look at himself for a solution rather than blaming anything else.

  66. stuart a August 20th, 2011 at 10:53 pm

Sure he’s mad. Burnett has gotten more rope than anyone on the team, and he’s probably been forced to keep giving it to him. Hughes comes off the DL, and Nova gets sent down. Now Garcia is placed on the DL for a finger cut. All to keep giving Burnett his turn, when anyone with a brain can tell Burnett should be the last one looking in.

You think if Nova was pitching like this he’d get his turn? No way, he’d be back in AAA in a blink.

What has Burnett really done to deserve all the rope he gets at this point?

  69. DocTodd August 20th, 2011 at 10:53 pm

Since nothing is going to change, and AJ will keep getting starts, it’s time for us fans to get smart. We need to all head to Vegas and bet the house every time they put this dope back on the mound…

  70. Niblick August 20th, 2011 at 10:53 pm

Cashman must have intervened and forced Binder Joe to defend Cashman’s prized pitching acquisition. Talk about a Bronx Zoo. Any animal could manage this organization better than the fools who are in charge.

  71. Joe from Long Island August 20th, 2011 at 10:54 pm

I think the politicians call this “plausible deniability”.

Joe’s pissed. But, he’s showing a lot of discipline, in not calling out his player in public. He doesn’t like losing, and AJ’s done a lot of losing lately. That’s on top of whatever mouthing off went on.

Joe may well be fed up with covering for players – for Posada when Jorge decided not to play, and not AJ mouthing off, and not just this game. The other game, I forget which, he didn’t even look at Joe when Joe came out to the mound for the ball.

I think randy’s right, when he says AJ needs to get his head together in the bullpen. Traditionally, getting pulled from the rotation has done wonders for attitude adjustments.

  72. luis August 20th, 2011 at 10:54 pm

    WCYF,

You can’t blame him for lying, if he trashes his player in public, he probably loses his authority inside the club house

  73. Niblick August 20th, 2011 at 10:54 pm

How do you tell when Cashman and Binder Joe are lying? Their lips are moving.

  74. stuart a August 20th, 2011 at 10:54 pm

burnett has no solutions. the guy is helpless..

he is shot mentally and phsyically. he will never succeed

  75. 4time August 20th, 2011 at 10:54 pm

“He gets another start on Friday because of the doubleheader on Saturday, then they have to make a decision on the rotation going forward.”

But what is that start going to prove?

If he does well and Hughes or Nova are mediocre, does that mean AJ stays in the rotation?

By the time the DH rolls around, they would have had almost a month with the 5-man rotation and the results are abundantly clear as to who is the odd man out… abundantly. One start, good or bad, by any of the parties, still wouldn’t make it close.

  76. blake August 20th, 2011 at 10:55 pm

    MG,

I’m sure AJ is very frustrated right now…..I think he cares a lot that he’s not pitching well and it is probably boiling over a bit…..he’s not a bad guy from everything I’ve heard and read. He’s just not very good anymore and that’s just the facts of the situation. If he wants more rope….and if he wants to stay in the rotation then he needs to do what it takes to get better.

  77. Captain Clutch August 20th, 2011 at 10:55 pm

Girardi just sounded like such a fool and his answer sounded VERY rehearsed. All he had to say was AJ was upset and we will handle it in the clubhouse. It’s obvious that Girardi and Cashman cover for AJ as much as they do because they don’t think he is mentally tough enough to handle the criticism and he would probably crumble. AJ is trying but he just isn’t any good.

  78. Niblick August 20th, 2011 at 10:56 pm

You don’t think he loses authority when he defends a player who publicly humiliated him?

  79. ac1 August 20th, 2011 at 10:56 pm

i dont care if girardi defends and lies about what happened or not, but to keep him in the rotation is an insult to any fan who pays for a ticket the next time we have to stomach an AJ Burnett start….

  83. Chambliss August 20th, 2011 at 10:58 pm

Can’t blame Girardi for wanting to keep this private. Cashman has to step in now for the good of the team.

  84. Pat M. August 20th, 2011 at 10:58 pm

AJ Burnett isn’t going to get bumped from the rotation, At least not right now……At this stage of the season and in many ways AJ’s career there’s no time to attempt to reform the guy as he is what he is….The key in my mind is to change Giradi’s manner in how to manage the guy…..What I mean is to have a very short hook with him and yank him before the floodgates….If that means 5 innings so be ready to pull him much like as though it’s an October game……What happened tonight happens to all big league pitchers where they get shelled right form the get go and crap that night….If Tin Cup is here I’m certain he’s seen starters who had great stuff in the bullpen only to leave it there once the game starts……I’m not supporting AH but until Garcia is ready to take his spin and the club is playing him 1.3 million or so a month he’s taking his turn…….

  85. luis August 20th, 2011 at 10:58 pm

    Niblick,

  87. blake August 20th, 2011 at 10:59 pm

Girardi was never going to trash anybody in a post game press conference….that’s not how teams work and that sends a bad message to everyone. Their actions going forward will tell the story of where things stand with AJ…..they have given him 2 years of rope now and things haven’t gotten any better. At some point….you have to look beyond the contract and the Yankees are probably nearing that point.

  88. Niblick August 20th, 2011 at 10:59 pm

Luis, I disagree. When he out and out lies to the public, that doesn’t enhance his standing with any player. They know the truth.

  89. stuart a August 20th, 2011 at 10:59 pm

so the takeaway is; they wil lget them next time, it is only 1 game, aj will work on some things during his side session, he is really close to getting ittogether, we believe in him, he has great stuff, keep lugging away, and aj needs to be the aj we all know…

that about it on the cliche’s, nonsense, and utter drivel..

  90. Niblick August 20th, 2011 at 11:01 pm

Just goes to show you that the Yanks care a lot more about protecting Cashman’s reputation as a gm (what a joke that is) than they do about putting the best team out there. Typical behavior for a dysfunctional organization. Without his $200 million budget, Cashman would be a total joke.

  91. Jerkface August 20th, 2011 at 11:02 pm

When he out and out lies to the public, that doesn’t enhance his standing with any player. They know the truth.

The players are against the public, its not going to diminish his standing in their eyes. They know Joe will not trash them to the media and that everything will be handled in house.

  92. Joe from Long Island August 20th, 2011 at 11:02 pm

Pat M. – but, pulling him early only works when he goes 5-6 innings. What do you do when AJ gets shelled in the second inning? You can’t blow out your bp every 5th day. Apart from whatever drama goes on, you can’t write off every 5th game when you’re in a pennant race.

  93. Betsy August 20th, 2011 at 11:02 pm

Blake, exactly – I don’t want my manager to act like Ozzie Guillen; what good does that do? It’s obvious that he was very angry – not at Curry, but at AJ – in part for putting himself in this kind of situation again.

Garcia is almost ready – he’s fine. This AJ thing is now a decision to be made by Cashman – I don’t think it’s in Joe’s hands.

  94. Jerkface August 20th, 2011 at 11:03 pm

The Yankees care about getting some return on the money they have to pay AJ Burnett. They aren’t going to DFA him and he will be difficult to trade.

  95. Niblick August 20th, 2011 at 11:03 pm

Jerk, it just demonstrates what a weak individual Binder Joe is.

Good post, but i have to disagree….I think AJ has pretty much exhausted his goodwill capital, besides, the FO duty is to field the team that has the best chance to win, and right now AJ is not one of your best 5 starters…..AJ has already been given a long rope…..It’s time to give the kids a chance regardless of cost, JMHO

    Nibblick,

Yeah, we have different takes on the issue, off course the players know the truth, do you think any one of those players wants their dirty laundry cleaned in public??….For example…i never read Joe Torre’s book, why??, because i think he betrayed the unwritten rule of never talk about what happens behind closed doors….That’s my take anyway

It’s not private dirty laundry – 30,000 fans and countless tv watchers saw exactly what happened. For Joe to go on TV and outright lie about it to the media is totally inappropriate. If he wanted to keep it private, he could have simply said that it was private, and not commented. Instead, he went out of his way to attack the media and fans, essentially accusing them of making an issue out of nothing.

Should have left AJ in the game and let him throw 150 pitches then put him on the dl due to tired arm

Pretty poor performance against a team whose lineup is made up of 1/2 of their Triple A lineup.

It’s not just one game, it’s most of the whole season. AJ has not had a QS since June 29 (0-9) and has given up 38 ER in 49 1/3 IP, which is an ERA close to 7 (too lazy to calculate it). And the quality of the opponent in this stretch has been pretty weak.

I dare say if the playoffs started tommorow, AJ would not be one of the 4 starters. Maybe he will do better out of the pen. It is time to see.
