Two quick notes

Just a heads up on a two things…

1. It’s not a cheap ticket, but Dave Robertson and Nick Swisher are hosting Yankees Unite for Tornado Relief on Monday’s off day. I talked to Dave and his wife, Erin, about it when Dave served drinks for the charity earlier this season. They’re both genuinely excited about it, and it really sounds like an incredible event. If you have the cash, it could be a great experience for a great cause.

2. Derek Jeter has donated the helmet and batting gloves he wore for career hit No. 3,000 to the Baseball Hall of Fame. They’ll be on display in about two weeks. “(Jeter) has a long history of being incredibly generous to the Museum, which in turn, has allowed all baseball fans to realize the profound impact he has had on our National Pastime for the last 16 years.” Jeff Idelson, president of the Hall of Fame, said in a statement. “He’s a great representative of the Yankees and baseball, and it’s an honor to preserve his accomplishments in Cooperstown in perpetuity.”

    Good stuff, thanks Chad!

The HOF is an incredible place – I wish it were closer so that I could go more often, but if you love baseball, then it’s sheer nirvana.

Great job by the Yankees in their charitable efforts – it’s certainly a worthy cause.

Wang, I’m not sure. Sometimes I find Nick to be humorous. But oft times, I find his humor to be redundant and untimely. mick, OTOH, is always spot on with his jokes and does not go out of his way to seek approval of his humor.

  3. Jacob Ruppert August 20th, 2011 at 12:06 pm

You must be really happy Betsy about last night. You have always been the biggest supporter of Hughes. What is your take on Hughes last night?

  4. DadinIowa August 20th, 2011 at 12:08 pm

I would LOVE to visit the Hall of Fame. Never been there. I wonder if there is a book giving the biographies of every person in the Hall?

    AROD LOVES JESUS:

    http://itsaboutthemoney.net/ar.....r-montero/

Jesus Montero has two guys pushing for him to get a September call-up, including Alex Rodriguez.

“The way he has caught the last two nights, he’s obviously good enough to catch in the majors,” Rodriguez said. “He played with a lot of intensity. He’s got all the tools.”

A-Rod took his two days in Scranton with the Triple-A Yankees as an opportunity to mentor the Yankees’ top hitting prospect. He took him into the indoor batting cage Wednesday afternoon and worked with him on his swing, his approach and about making the next step for about 20 minutes.

    Great comedy.

Tar’s use of double negatives are breathtaking.

  10. West Coast Yankee Fan August 20th, 2011 at 12:18 pm

After some extensive research I have determined that it is not possible to find one’s zen on days that AJ Burnett pitches.

  11. J. Alfred Prufrock August 20th, 2011 at 12:20 pm

    Jesus is in for it:

“We talked about hopefully getting together this winter in Miami, working out with Kevin Long and Butch and whoever wants to come down to Miaimi and have a little bit of a winter hitting camp,” Rodriguez said. ”Obviously he’s a guy we expect big things from and what saw tonight and the past few nights, he’s not going to disappoint.”

    :D

  12. mick August 20th, 2011 at 12:22 pm

    AJ for AJita….get it?

  13. J. Alfred Prufrock August 20th, 2011 at 12:25 pm

    FROM SAME MONTERO STORY:

“It’s great news about Montero, and it’s awesome that A-Rod puts such an effort into helping the guys around him. He could have easily put his work in, done what he needed to do in the games, bought something nice for the clubhouse, and headed out to Minnesota, and no one would have said anything about it. But not only did A-Rod spend some time with Montero, it appears that he specifically made it a point to do so. Say what you want about A-Rod’s personal flaws, but chalk this up as another story of the people in the clubhouse with him praising him for being a good teammate.”
    ///

I knew Alex would put in time with Jesus. He’s a purist & admires talent in others as well as appreciating it in himself. He’s also pretty well versed on the top guys in the minors, and has a genuine interest in the farm system.

    Alex is true blue.

  14. blake August 20th, 2011 at 12:29 pm

Arod is like that brilliant professor that understands what a travesty it would be to not pass along what he knows……

  15. Jacob Ruppert August 20th, 2011 at 12:31 pm

    Will check it out, mick.

  16. Betsy August 20th, 2011 at 12:31 pm

Blake, the only stories that ever get notice about Alex are the stupid ones like the poker thing; this kind of story about Alex always flies under the radar. I guess it’s the same rationale that makes Granderson’s season fly under the radar – in NY, you only get press if you suck badly enough

  17. tomingeorgia August 20th, 2011 at 12:32 pm

Montero does’t make enough money to go to an Arod poker game, but he can watch.

  18. Jacob Ruppert August 20th, 2011 at 12:33 pm

Before I do, though, play nice Alan James Burnett

  21. Jacob Ruppert August 20th, 2011 at 12:51 pm

I do get frustrated with the Betsy stuff. It is pretty clear that Betsy loves the Yankees and Phil Hughes. Being critical of Hughes does not make her any less a supporter of Hughes. When a parent is critical of a child, does that mean the parent does not love the child? Human beings are always more critical of the ones we love the most.

  22. Jacob Ruppert August 20th, 2011 at 12:54 pm

lmao at the last thread. Generalissimo Franco! Sometimes, this blog is a comedy show

  23. muddyduck August 20th, 2011 at 12:59 pm

Enjoyed hearing from Brosius during last night’s broadcast. Always did like the way he played the game.

His visit to the booth sent me reminiscing about the ’98 team in particular and after scouring youtube for highlights from that year, this one jumped out:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v.....re=related

I don’t remember seeing that game at the time. Certainly one of the most intense confrontations I’ve seen on a ball field though. Had to laugh at seeing Graeme Lloyd get into the mix! Also neat to see some of the current ‘old guard’ like Jeter and Posada in their earlier days.

Anyone have any recollections of that night? I’d love to hear them!

  24. J. Alfred Prufrock August 20th, 2011 at 1:00 pm

IMO, there’s far too much attention in here to who said what rather than what was said. If some have some sort of imaginary relationship with a player, & that’s their thing, that’s fine, but I’m not interested in it nor inclined to identity the player with that person’s fantasy.

THe good news is, Hughes is pitching so well, the Yanks would be out of their minds not to have him in the postseason rotation mix, regardless of what they see as convenience. Hughes and Nova seem to me no brainers. Young live arms are always the preference, I would say.

  27. Yankee Trader August 20th, 2011 at 1:11 pm

It sounded like Garcia was a little perturbed, when he claimed to be ready, at being sent down to AAA until next Saturday’s DH in Baltimore.

    Garcia’s contract:
    1 year/$1.5M (2011)
3.6M in performance bonuses based on starts (to 30 GS)

I believe he’s had 20 starts so far. He would have gone tomorrow and next Saturday. It might result in him not making the performance bonus.

  28. Shame Spencer August 20th, 2011 at 1:13 pm

Sounds like Arod wants to win some more rings and thinks a catcher with hitting power might be helpful…interesting concept :)

Alex really helped out Cano and there’s no doubt in my mind his influence on Montero will be positive. That story just made my day.

  29. Vineyard Yankee August 20th, 2011 at 1:13 pm

Nicety is good. My doggies and I are playing with one another nicely now.

  30. blake August 20th, 2011 at 1:16 pm

    Trader,

that’s a good point….3.6 million bucks is worth being perturbed about. He knows the deal though…..and the Yanks COULD make it up to him in a contract for next year if they wanted. He’s been everything they could have hoped he’d be this year.

  31. Vineyard Yankee August 20th, 2011 at 1:18 pm

  32. Crawdaddy August 20th, 2011 at 1:21 pm

Even if Garcia started tomorrow, he’s not getting 10 more starts from 20 to 30 before the season ends. After today, there are only 38 games left.

  33. Jacob Ruppert August 20th, 2011 at 1:22 pm

I would like to play with Crawdaddy nice. Will you play with me nice, Crawdaddy?

  34. UnKnown August 20th, 2011 at 1:23 pm

Great week of Yankee Baseball I am seeing. 2 in KC and now these 4 in Minny. Finally got the first good start of the week from a Yankee Pitcher. Hughes was dominate.

The offense all week has been doing an excellent job.

Not sure how much longer this ownage will continue over the Twins but I hope it will continue for at least 2 more games.

  35. Jacob Ruppert August 20th, 2011 at 1:23 pm

I will even give you gelato if you play nice with me Crawdaddy. Gelato for everyone. Gelato gelato gelato!

  36. blake August 20th, 2011 at 1:25 pm

    Craw,

    that’s probably true as well.

  37. Jacob Ruppert August 20th, 2011 at 1:27 pm

blake, will you play nice with me for gelato?

  38. UnKnown August 20th, 2011 at 1:27 pm

Look for the boo birds to be in full force today at Target Field and for the whole “Minnesota Nice” thing to be over if AJ and the Yankees can beat them again today.

Locals have a little hope today with AJ on the mound and rightfully so, he has not been too good and will more than likely give the Twins every opportunity to win this game.

Need the Offense to light up Frankie Fastball for about 6 to 8 runs again today to have a decent shot at another victory. Good thing is that SOROMO are all rested and maybe we can make this a 6 inning game today by going to and using that relief formula.

  39. blake August 20th, 2011 at 1:28 pm

    Jacob,

    Yes….I love gelato! :)

  40. Jacob Ruppert August 20th, 2011 at 1:31 pm

Wholeheartedly agree. I believe today will be the one game the Twinkies win out of the four. Burnett is the weak link in out pitching chain at the present time. I don’t have any confidence in him at all. He forces me to drink while watching the games he pitches.

Catching up on some posts from last night. Had to get to bed, sorry I missed CB, Pat M. It’s a shame, those two have a lot to offer.

Betsy – don’t let some folks get you down. While I’ve disagreed with you on a few things, you are sincere in your beliefs. Don’t get dragged into muck, just ignore when necessary.

JAP – thank you for posting that tidbit on Alex and his work with Montero.

I remember Pete, when he was here, would occasionally comment on how Alex was kind of like an eccentric uncle, to use Pete’s phrase – brilliant in what he does, but incapable of having normal personal relationships. Now, I don’t know how close to reality that was, obviously. But, over the past couple of years, specifically since Alex came out of the closet on PEDs and had a come to Jesus moment (no, not that one in Scranton), I’ve read here and there how he’s seems to have become more accepted and part of the clubhouse scene; even going out with Posada and Jeter frequently.

I think the guy clearly loves baseball, and spends a lot of his free time wrapped up in it. From what I’ve read, he seems to be kind of a savant, remembering details from games years ago.

But, as suggested, he also seems to have a great respect for the game, and has been very involved in trying to help youngsters coming up. Is it purely altruistic? My guess is at least as much as anyone else. Is that a bad thing?

We all go through a personal evolution as we go through the journey of life. It looks like Alex, with all his complexities, is also. It is unfortunate that so many people, especially in the media, keep trying to use outdated views of a person, and refuse to acknowledge the normal to and fro of life.

  47. Jacob Ruppert August 20th, 2011 at 1:39 pm

  48. 86w183 August 20th, 2011 at 1:40 pm

The Garcia contract probably has tiers either worth $ 600 K each (for 6) or $ 360 (for 10).

I would assume they would start at 15 or thereabouts and he picks up a bonus each start or every other start after that.

Seeing how he has the second best ERA among the starters he has a right to be perturbed by missing an additional start… could be worth anywhere from $ 300 to $ 600 K to him

  49. Yankee Trader August 20th, 2011 at 1:51 pm

  53. ron August 20th, 2011 at 2:22 pm

    Gus Molina’s DFA’ing means …

… that Jesus Montero will be a September call-up. Molina was the team’s third catcher, the only viable alternative to Montero if the Yankees wanted an extra backstop. Third catchers are a rite of September, they’re always among the first guys called up. It’s very likely that Molina will clear waivers and return to the Yankees, so yeah they probably would still be able to call him up for September, but it seems very unlikely given the way they just took him off the 40-man roster. Rumors of an imminent Montero promotion have been circulating for weeks, and sacrificing Gus’ 40-man spot seems like another indication that the team’s top prospect will be with the big league club in a little less than two weeks.

Yankees – and many others – have been scouting Rich Harden

    http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/

would be a nice addition, but the article fails to mention whether or not Harden actually cleared waivers. I can’t imagine he did….. in which case the Yanks would have no shot at him.

  56. Joe from Long Island August 20th, 2011 at 2:53 pm

Boston Dave – thanks for the link. Harden sure does sound attractive for the stretch and playoff runs. Of course, having too much pitching is always a good “problem” to have. I could see Colon going to the bullpen to make room for him, given Colon’s recent struggles.

    Interesting thought.

  57. RS August 20th, 2011 at 3:01 pm

If Garcia finishes the year strong, I believe he should get to start in the postseason. He has the second best ERA on the team, at worst he gives up 3-4 runs and still gives the team a chance to win, and he has pitched pretty well against the other playoff contenders this year (especially CLE and TEX).

I know people don’t trust him against Boston still, but he has been as good against that team as any of our other pitchers, including CC.

The other thing is, Colon can be brought out of the bullpen because he warms up quickly. Garcia is not a good candidate for pitching in relief. If you let him start the game and he gets through the first inning unscathed, chances are he’s going to pitch a pretty good game. If he struggles early, you can always pull him out and go to Colon, and you still have Noesi available for long relief later on.

CC, Hughes, Nova/Garcia, Garcia/Nova is how I would go right now, with Colon in the pen and Burnett off the roster.
