A sweep would be great, but as long as we will the series, we will at least stay in first place

Some guy called in to mlb radio a few minutes ago and suggested that AJs struggles weren’t mental but that they could be related to his stuff diminishing.

Kennedy and Duquette decided that snce his velocity was only down marginally since last year then clearly that wasn’t it and.it was all mental. Of course they forgot to notice that he was terrible last year as well and that his velo is down almost 3 mph from 4 years ago. Lol

GB: Read your missives on Jim Bouton. Great read. Stirred up memories of that time. I still haven’t recovered from the freefall the Yanks took after 1964 :(

oakland is an interesting team every year, great young inconsistent pitching and steroid era offensive tactics, taking walks and waiting for the three run home run. when will they start drafting athletic players who can hit for average? with that pitching, they should win much more than they do

  12. DadinIowa August 23rd, 2011 at 12:26 pm

I still think that AJ has potential. But, like Mussina, he needs to learn to adjust to his present “stuff”. It took Moose a bit of time to adjust, and perhaps AJ is just taking a bit longer!! (here is where you cross your fingers and hope). My beef is that he could be trying to work it out in the minors for a couple of starts on an injury rehab instead of doing it at the major league level where wins and losses count.

  13. blake August 23rd, 2011 at 12:27 pm

Ajs avg fastball in 2007 was 95.1 mph……its 92.7 this year. There is a big difference between pitching at 95 and touching 95 when you only have 2 pitches and poor command.

Need another 5-2 stretch in the next two series…..that probably allows a 2 or 3 game lead gojng into Fenway.

I’m looking at memory foam too. Which type did you get if you don’t mind me asking?

Temper-pedic is the way to go. Only downside is you really can’t jump on it…..no spring.

In the past ten years, I would like to see a breakdown of the Yankees record against the Sux in September. I bet we have a better than 60-40% split against them. I am pretty confident we will do the same this year.

  17. pat August 23rd, 2011 at 12:33 pm

    Blake

Rick Petersen said last week he has looked at video and AJ is off mechanically. He said his arm is in front of his body on too many pitches. Explained AJs palm should be facing SS at the point his landing foot touches and it is past that. He said the Yankees likely know that but knowing what’s wrong and being able to fix what’s wrong seems to be a disconnect that AJ has trouble with.

Jay Jaffe has speculated before that Gardner takes balls away from Granderson, and so it’s interesting to see Barbarisi essentially confirm this hypothesis. Like Jaffe, I wondered about Granderson’s poor UZR score since it doesn’t seem to pass the eye test and I’ve yet to find a single person who believes that Granderson is actually a poor fielder. It may simply be that Gardner’s speedy wheels and great instincts, and Granderson’s positioning, are the cause of Granderson’s subpar UZR score this year.

This is a relevant issue as it relates to Granderson’s MVP chances. In traditional categories, Granderson cleans up. He’s second in HR, first in R and RBI, and he’s stolen 24 bases. But in the advanced statistic realm of Wins Above Replacement, Granderson is held back by his poor defensive score. His -9.2 UZR rating means that he’s not as high up the Fangraphs’ WAR leaderboard as guys like Bautista, Pedroia and Ellsbury. Yet if we subbed in a value of 0 for Granderson’s UZR, still a conservative number in my estimation, his fWAR would go from 6.1 to 6.9. If we gave him last year’s value of 6.4 runs, his fWAR would go to 7.6, ahead of Pedroia, Ellsbury and Gonzalez and just a tenth of a point behind Jose Bautista. In other words, it’s possible that the case for Granderson winning the MVP should look even stronger than it already does.

    Interesting stuff.

  19. blake August 23rd, 2011 at 12:38 pm

    Pat,

They may be true……but the biggest issue is the rotation in his delivery that’s always been there and his inability to repeat a motion. He’s 34 now…..old dogs and new tricks. The velocity is still down and unless they can figure out how to make repeat and.command better then its going to be more of the same Im afraid.

RIP Nick Ashford, died Monday at age 70. (who wrote pop/soul classics including “Let’s Go Get Stoned,” “Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing,” “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” and “You’re All I Need To Get By”, with his wife Valerie Simpson.) They were very big in the R&B songwriting scene.

  21. HipHipHorHay August 23rd, 2011 at 12:41 pm

Dad – IMO, big difference between AJ and Moose is that Moose seemed to be extremely mentally tough, whereas AJ is a headcase. My point being I can see Mussina making that adjustment, but not as confident with Burnett. From watching on TV, it seems like Burnett’s stuff is good enough to get guys out, he just can’t do it consistently.

Blake, I wonder if Granderson plays shaded toward right in order to help back up Swisher more, which could be some of the reason Gardner covers some of the ground he would cover toward left. Granderson isn’t slow, though he isn’t as fast as Gardner. He does sometimes struggle to see the ball, but it’s not all that often.

I don’t think he is the best CF in terms of defense, but he is good out there.

This is what I’ve been trying to say here for several days now…

  26. blake August 23rd, 2011 at 12:43 pm

AJs stuff IS still good enough to get guys out…..if he could throw the ball where he wanted and if he could incorporate more than 2 pitches…..but he’s not doing those things right now.

  27. blake August 23rd, 2011 at 12:44 pm

    Yogi,

Yea I think they do shade him a little more towards Swisher at times because Gardner can cover the Left center gap so well.

  28. Yogi Mantle August 23rd, 2011 at 12:47 pm

Erin, I didn’t see that. Thanks. It’s sad to see them departing. Jerry wrote some huge songs back in the day.

Amazing to think of the talent they both had that influenced music so much.

  29. West Coast Yankee Fan August 23rd, 2011 at 12:48 pm

AJ’s problems are 100% command and control related. He can’t throw the ball where the catcher wants him to, where his glove is, and big league hitters don’t usually miss mistakes.

That he leads the league in wild pitches and is second in walks tells you all you need to know.

  30. Shame Spencer August 23rd, 2011 at 12:49 pm

I know this is incredibly off topic and random but I keep reading about this movie they’re making based on Moneyball and I just need someone to remind me when the last time the A’s actually won the WS was…because every time I read about Billy Beane it always makes it seem like he.. I dunno.. won something?

  31. blake August 23rd, 2011 at 12:51 pm

“AJ’s problems are 100% command and control related. He can’t throw the ball where the catcher wants him to, where his glove is, and big league hitters don’t usually miss mistakes”

Yes…..but that’s always been the case with AJ. Only now he’s making 92 mph mistakes instead of 95 mph mistakes……so the problem is compounded.

In the past ten years, I would like to see a breakdown of the Yankees record against the Sux in September
    =============================

From 2002 (When Boston’s current ownership moved in) thru 2010, Yankees went 18-17 against Boston in September. Where the Yankees really hurt Boston was in August when they went 21-6 against them (again using ’02 thru ’10).

  34. Yogi Mantle August 23rd, 2011 at 12:52 pm

West Coast, I almost think AJ would be better if he harnessed the wild pitches bit more. There are pitchers that are effectively wild, making the batters really uncomfortable at the plate. AJ doesn’t do that. He tends to bounce the ball over throwing in or making the batter have to dance out of the way.

  35. Erin August 23rd, 2011 at 12:53 pm

    Shame-LOL Very true.

    I disagree with both points:

AJ’s problem isn’t his stuff, nor is it his command. It’s between the ears.

AJ can cruise along for 4 or 5 innings looking like the most dominant pitcher in the world and then something goes wrong – an error, a walk on a pitch he thought was a strike – something – and instead of fighting through it he implodes. The stuff didn’t leave him, he didn’t forget how to throw strikes, he just loses control of himself.

But that’s the problem right? He can’t harness his pitches; there are too many pitches per start that just miss the target. And the worse ones are not the wild pitches, it’s the ones he leaves over the plate.

He’s the same guy he’s always been…..minus 3 mph. Still has really good stuff……its just not top drawer anymore and eventually he makes a fatal mistake or 12 in location. There may be a mental component but I think ifs just one of the factors and not the only or primary one.

But I just read that article and a couple more about the making of the movie and its so funny to hear these guys talk about Billy Beane as like the ultimate David to baseball’s Goliath. AJ needs to take a word of advice from Yogi, “How can a guy Think & Pitch at the same time?”

AJ’s mechanics are still a mess especially after a few innings. When he goes to the stretch he seems to get mechanically off as well. Several things are working against him as I have stated before.

    1. His mechanics being off with a high release point on his FB is basically a tip of his curve. People are not swinging at his curve.

    2. When he pitched in Toronto they were signalling his pitches. (I also wonder about Beantown doing the same thing!)

    3. Most teams are hitting one of the Yankee hitters in the 1st inning or so to keep AJ (and other Yankee Starters) from being able to pitch inside.

    4. AJ has lost about 3 or 4 mph on his fastball, but I believe that is more mechanical related than arm related.

    5. Every bad outing depletes his confidence even more.

    1. They’re not terrorists? Tell that to the Israelies and watch them laugh at you (or show you the wreckage created by the latest attacks)

    2. They are basing their new form of government on strict adherence to Islamic law. Which, as you say, is their right…but I don’t see it as a good thing. Interestingly enough, both the West and Iran were supporting the rebels – yeah, I don’t see that backfiring in the least. (sarcasm)

    =======================================

No titles or anything, but Beane did have a nice 7 year run with a pretty low budget operation. Averaged 95 wins from 2000-2006. Some gutwrenching playoff losses and no championships, but making the playoffs is harder than winning in the playoffs. For a low budget team to be that cosistent for a 7 year period is fairly impressive. Not sure it’s movie-worthy though.

    ***********

How do you know he quits? That is speculation right? Poor command is not, that’s a fact borne out by what we see every time he pitches. How many times have the YES announcers replayed a hit and showed Martin or Cervelli setting up outside and the ball drifting right down the middle belt high. And when you lead the league in wild pitches and are second in walks, that seems to be pretty conclusive evidence that he has no idea where the ball is going.

  66. Chambliss August 23rd, 2011 at 1:25 pm

AJ’s stuff is not as good as it was when he was with Toronto. When he had his best stuff, he could make a lot of mistakes that did not hurt him because his pitches had so much movement on them. Even pitches over the heart of the plate were hard to square up because they moved so much. Now his pitches have less movement, so his margin for error is smaller. AJ needs to figure out a way to go from being a thrower to a pitcher.

It can’t all be mental, because AJ had a pretty good year in ’09 for us. I really think it’s the lack of stuff, because if you look at his game logs, he’s not having his usual share of dominant games. He used to have many scoreless outings (which were balanced out by his clunkers), but now even his best outings he’s giving up 2-3 runs over 6+ innings. That kills his ERA because he still has the clunkers, but nothing left to neutralize them.

After being so adamant that Burnett’s contract won’t affect their decision, how could Cashman and Girardi possibly justify keeping him in the rotation? The only out I see is that they think Colon could use some rest, so he’s the one booted (but only temporarily, I hope).

What happens if Burnett pitches really well against the O’s? I think that wouldn’t instill much confidence in any of us, but would the Yankees try to spin it as proof he’s getting back on track? And if they do try to cut him still, how will Burnett respond to being shoved away coming off a good game? If you hear him speak during postgames, it doesn’t sound like he thinks he’s pitching for his job, and that’s after horrible clunkers. I fear it’s going to be near impossible to remove him from the rotation after a decent/good game without stirring controversy.

  93. West Coast Yankee Fan August 23rd, 2011 at 1:49 pm

The problem with AJ pitching well his next time out is that you pretty much know what will follow, another stinker. When you are 32-34 in 92 starts for the best hitting club in baseball – that’s pretty pathetic, especially for $16.5 million a year.

  94. 108 stitches August 23rd, 2011 at 1:49 pm

The bullpen is rested which means Colon needs to pitch just enough to be the pitcher of record.
C.C. should throw his normal over 100 pitches with little help tomorrow and Hughes if continuing his current progress, will only need Robertson and Rivera.
Need to be careful of Matsui and Willingham who have been trouble before.

What did Rick make of the brain scan?

  98. Niblick August 23rd, 2011 at 1:57 pm

I read the book Moneyball when it came out. The idea then was Beane had the new method of drafting and evaluating players. His drafts and free agent signings seem pedestrian, if not abysmal. Why the movie?

Michael Lewis is a great writer and the book was good, ergo it might make a good movie. The idea of Moneyball is that Billy Beane had to get better at finding baseball players, and buying low on undervalued assets that help to build a winning baseball team. And the famous moneyball draft had a number of major leaguers in it.

A quake that size on the eastern seaboard can be very serious because they don’t earthquake proof buildings like out West.

Looks like the Geologists will have a new fault to study.

Before the Northridge earthquake they didn’t know about that one either.

There will be some aftershocks as well.

  117. Jerkface August 23rd, 2011 at 2:13 pm

First ….what is megamind? Second, what percentage of WAR does defense account for? …..and because of that so you question the accuracy of it in determining who the best players actually are?

A cartoon movie starring Brad Pit. The defensive component of WAR is as much as you have or don’t have defense. So an incredible defender will gain more, while an average to poor defender will not gain anything or even lose points. The problem with WAR is that Fangraphs and BBREF use different defensive metrics for their WAR, so the WAR is different. Pitcher WAR on fangraphs uses predicative stats to determine value instead of what actually happened.

WAR in general is pretty good and lines up fairly accurately with player value. I like looking, for position players, at their offensive WAR and then at the defensive component and looking at their career defensive trend to see whats going on there. Gardner gains a lot of WAR from his defense, but we know his defense is outstanding #1. Granderson in general gains WAR from his defense, so this year I’m definitely discounting anything that says he is a negative runs outfielder.

UZR in general is better over larger samples due to how it is derived. I don’t think Granderson should be penalized for his rating this year, but the media will be spoon feeding the masses it.

    JF,

Thanks. I posted an article earlier from RAB earlier that said that if they substituted Granderson’s UZR from last year then his overall WAR would be just a little but short of Bautista’s and higher than everyone else. I hope that it doesn’t cost Granderson the MVP because that would be most unfortunate.

    Expanding on Wandy Rodriguez:

Lefty Wandy Rodriguez has been claimed on waivers by an unknown team, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Currently Rodriguez is owed just $1.38MM for the rest of this season, plus $36MM for 2012-14 assuming his exercises a player option for the final season.

The Astros have the option of dumping that commitment on the other club, working out a trade with the team, or pulling Rodriguez back.

    Rodriguez, 32, has a 3.31 ERA, 7.7 K/9, 3.0 BB/9, 1.0 HR/9, and 45.3% groundball rate in 147 innings this year.

The Astros will likely want to dump the contract.

Who will be the likely dumpee?
    Diamondbacks vying for the wildcard
Red Sox loading up on lefties
Indians who failed to get Harden
Yankees maybe looking to add a lefty to the 2012 rotation

Now why would the Nats do that, when they could have worked out a very reasonable deal with the Yankees for Maryland native AJ Burnett?? :(

    Mon, 8/29 at Orioles 7:05p ?Sabathia-back to q 5th day
Tue, 8/30 at Red Sox 7:10p probably Hughes
Wed, 8/31 at Red Sox 7:10p ? Now who AJ on 4 days rest or Garcia/Nova on 3 days
Thu, 9/1 at Red Sox 7:10p ?Again will it be Garcia or Nova on 4 days rest

Unless I’m missing something when they go back to a 5 man rotation it looks like AJ will get another turn in Boston, unless they bring up a AAA pitcher to pitch Monday in Baltimore and go with Colon, CC, and either Garcia or Nova in Boston

USA TODAY’s Dan Vergano sent us this file:

“Central Virginia does get its share of minor earthquakes, but an earthquake of this size on the East Coast is certainly very unusual,” says seismologist Karen Fischer of Brown University.

Virginia is not on an active earthquake fault and is roughly in the middle of the North American continental crustal plate, she says. But it has residual fault scars left over from 200 to 300 million years ago, when it was an earthquake zone, at the time when the Atlantic Ocean rifted apart from Europe. “We are just seeing pressure build up and release on those scars,” Fischer says. “There is a lot of debate on exactly what is going on down there and exactly how quakes this big happen in this kind of crustal zone.”

Because the crust under the East Coast is colder and firmer than the West Coast, shocks travel more efficiently through it, accounting for the widely felt shaking.

“One lesson of this quake is that building codes will likely need to be revisited on the East Coast,” Fischer says. “Because we are not as conscious of earthquakes here as the West Coast and we will have to see about structural damage to buildings, although I have not heard any damage reports so far.”

Nice thought, Erin. If it could only be reality. It looks like Washington is out as a destination for Burnett. It looks like they claimed Wandy Rodriquez.

If they claim Wandy, they now have long term contracts with Beckett, Lackey, Buchholz, Lester?,

They want to add another ‘decent’ 3/36 to that?
