Pinch hitting…

Hey everyone, Josh Thomson in for Chad today. Long time, no write…or however you’d say it.

I’m already rolling on Twitter so if you have a question the next couple hours post it there. I’ll drop the lineup on there when it’s posted and will return to the blog when I’m back in the press box. Here’s hoping the rain holds off until 4.

    LOL

    Hi Josh! :)

    It will.

    Erin-

Looks like Josh is our pretend Chad.

  4. Purenyyankee August 25th, 2011 at 9:21 am

It NEVER would have gotten to Coco if our ACE did his job in the 8th inning. UNACCEPTABLE and he even said it. We gave Sizemore his career night also. The 0-2 pitch was awful.

  5. Erin August 25th, 2011 at 9:22 am

MTU-out of everybody, I think Josh is the best Pretend Chad. ;)

  6. MTU August 25th, 2011 at 9:24 am

    Erin-

I’ll accept your word for it.

    Your real word.

    Erin-

Sure is quiet in here this AM.

You’d think a hurricane was on the way.

Morning, all. MTU, all I could hear were crickets.

  9. LGY August 25th, 2011 at 9:37 am

@SI_JonHeyman Initial belief is cubs are unlikely to trade carlos pena to yankees. (posada breathing sigh of relief)

  10. MTU August 25th, 2011 at 9:37 am

    Tom-

The internal or external kind ? I’ve heard both in my time.

    :)

    Josh can you pitch?

  14. Erin August 25th, 2011 at 9:40 am

MTU-yes, very quiet this AM. Calm before the storm? ;)

  15. PacoDooley August 25th, 2011 at 9:40 am

Anyone hear whether the game is likely to be rained delayed or rained out? Just looked at the forecast and I see rain in NY this afternoon. I have a date with my kids to watch the game (on TV!) and they will be really disappointed if rain interferes!

  16. Erin August 25th, 2011 at 9:41 am

JackCurryYES Carlos Pena told reporters in Chicago that the Cubs told him they had pulled him back off waivers. He will stay a Cub.

  17. MTU August 25th, 2011 at 9:42 am

    erin-

Yeah maybe. I kind of hope Boston gets to hear that big sucking sound.

Not the Hurricane. The one where there season goes down the drain.

    you know.

    ;)

  18. MTU August 25th, 2011 at 9:43 am

    edit: their. sorry.

  19. RadioKev August 25th, 2011 at 9:43 am

Whirlwind weekend for myself, been traveling around Boston looking for new apartments. I missed all the games since Sunday. Looks like a mixed bag, eh?

I think I need to know Josh’s stance on pancakes for the table or one of his own inspired traditions I can adopt before I can truly warm up to him.

  21. upstate kate August 25th, 2011 at 9:43 am

Yes MTU, all is fine. Just busy at work and busy getting ready to send my son off to college…he is living off campus this semester.

  22. MTU August 25th, 2011 at 9:43 am

    Kev-

    Good timing.

  26. MTU August 25th, 2011 at 9:47 am

    kate-

    maybe that’s the idea ( ;) ).

Had a bit of a scare with one of my babies the other day.

He inhaled a cat’s tail while we were out for some exercise.

Vet had to put him under to remove it. poor little guy.

He’s fine now. My wallet isn’t though.

  27. joeman August 25th, 2011 at 9:50 am

winning 90+ games in reg season will get them into the playoffs but won’t get them into the AL championship game….SP is built for the reg season not the playoffs

  28. timmyb72 August 25th, 2011 at 9:50 am

My question why would the Cubs pull Pena back? They have an opportunity to dump salary, get a minorleague player and then resign Pena in the winter. The Yankees aren’t about to keep Pena past this winter, so what gives?

  29. 108 stitches August 25th, 2011 at 9:52 am

Joe Girardi and Larry Rothschild are probably working on a contingency plan with Hurricane Irene in mind.
As if the team doesn’t have enough games to make up already. This could be a test for the Yankee pitching staff. The Orioles don’t care because they’re going nowhere anyway.

  30. upstate kate August 25th, 2011 at 9:53 am

    MTU
was the tail still attached to the cat?
glad to hear he is ok.

  31. LGY August 25th, 2011 at 9:54 am

    Joeman

So you think the Yankees will get knocked out in the ALDS?

  32. Josh Thomson August 25th, 2011 at 9:56 am

Pat… Not a big pancake guy. But I generally believe family style is better, so I can get behind that.

  33. MTU August 25th, 2011 at 9:56 am

    Kate-

Thanks. The vet handed me the offending bit of grass along with the bill.

Another case of “Love over gold”.

  35. Villa Nova-Ya August 25th, 2011 at 9:59 am

I have to ask why no one is talking about DRob not doing his job last night, letting the inherited runner score?

It was a team loss, with “contributions” from all sides, but I’ve only seen CC and Soriano being the pitchers of blame, so to speak. In spite of the AWOL offense, if DRob does what DRob usually does, Tex’s HR wins the game, no?

Point is, everyone has a bad day or two (or ten) in a 162-game season.

Anyway, hope the rain holds off today and they salvage the final game.

  36. pat August 25th, 2011 at 10:00 am

drob has a lot better track record this year than soriano, he gets benefit of doubt.
anyone know what soriano has written in his hat etc?
i asked question yesterday, couldnt folloup.

if a runner is on base, soriano gets ball in his glove, and takes his hat off to read his hat with hand, why arent runners stealing?
is the ball not live till he toes the rubber?

The Yankees on paper are looking the best right now. On paper.
    _______________

Really? You think CC and X look better than Lester and Beckett? Or are you talking about third and fourth starters?
CC has gotten ROCKED by the Red Sox this year, and both Beckett and Lester have fared pretty darn good.
I’m confused which paper you’re looking at. Boston’s rotation is more suited to handle the post season than any AL team, I think. Especially if Bucholtz comes back this month, which they’re saying he will. If they win games one and two, their offense, like the Yankees will pound the third.
But, by all means, feel free to disagree.

  49. Howard August 25th, 2011 at 10:45 am

The Tigers are the scariest opponent in my eyes. Not nearly as complete as the Yankees, but they do have some big time weapons.

Really, again? Boston has fed New York it’s dinner this year, have the best offense in baseball, two studs at the front of the rotation, but you’re scared of a team with Verlander and Cabrerra more than them?
    Holy Kool-aid.

  50. Mell August 25th, 2011 at 10:48 am

Radar does not look especially promising. Some real nastiness not too far to the west of NYS

  51. Mell August 25th, 2011 at 10:50 am

Especially if Bucholtz comes back this month, which they’re saying he will

    ====================================

Not much evidence to suggest Buchholtz will be a significant postseason contributor.

  52. Phranchise August 25th, 2011 at 10:52 am

They also say Bucholz will be in the pen.

  53. blake August 25th, 2011 at 10:52 am

The only advantage the Red Sox rotation would have is game 2. Game 1 would be a wash and Im not sure the Yanks wouldn’t have the pitching advantage in a Game 3 and 4 of a series with Boston.

  54. blake August 25th, 2011 at 10:53 am

Bucholtz has a stress fracture in his back…..he’s.likely done this year.

  55. J. Alfred Prufrock August 25th, 2011 at 10:57 am

I don’t like the idea that Hughes will have to hang around and wait to pitch or get rain interrupted. He’s on his way to being Phil Hughes again. It’s pouring down here, at the moment.

  56. MaineYankee August 25th, 2011 at 10:57 am

    Mell

In regards to Tex. toughness, did you see him take out the Angel catcher last year?

    Put him on the DL.

I think I recall him doing it one other time as well.

He also has gotten real angry when some have tried to run into his arm on a close play at first.

  57. Howard August 25th, 2011 at 10:57 am

The only advantage the Red Sox rotation would have is game 2. Game 1 would be a wash and Im not sure the Yanks wouldn?t have the pitching advantage in a Game 3 and 4 of a series with Boston.
    —————————————–

I’d say wash as well, if I hadn’t watched the other 4 games where they hit CC so well. Whatever the case, Detroit strikes way LESS fear in me than does an ALCS with Boston. I think a lot will be judged on how Beckett does in his next time around with them, but regardless, Boston can outhit and outpitch anyone on any given night. Look at the damage they just did to Texas the last two games. Id rather NY face anyone other than Boston.

  58. Mell August 25th, 2011 at 10:59 am

Bucholtz has a stress fracture in his back…..he’s.likely done this year.

    =========================

They’ve left a slight opening to the possibility he could be back, but he’d be starting at basically spring training status, and so far as I know he hasn’t started his way back yet in terms of baseball activity. He’s not likely to make much of a postseason contribution.

  59. yankeefeminista August 25th, 2011 at 10:59 am

It is pouring here in NJ. I really wanted to see Hughes pitch today. According to weather.com looks like there is a window of no precipitation between 3 and 5PM. Hopefully, Hughes isn’t up and down, and we get this game in, (even though I am not there. :( ) September is brutal already. We can’t afford to have any more makeups.

Boston and the Yankees offenses have been pretty similar this year…..both capable of outbursts even against good pitching but also have had tendencies to go into.deep freeze mode. The Sox.were slumping hard with the bags before the last couple in Texas.

I don’t care who we play in the division series…..but I think both the Rangers or Tigers coukd give either team (Yanks or Sox) trouble in a short series. I prefer to win the division.

    ——————-

I’m not worried about the pitching advantages in game three and four of any series. Those guys are going to get hits. I’m more worried about that offense in games three and four. They’ve proven time and time again this year that they can hit as well as anyone…especially against NY’s pitching.
You guys can downplay Boston all you want, but I won’t. A series with them is the scariest possible scenario for me, even in losing. The backlash just isn’t the same with anyone else. That, and they’ve weathered their little storm of injuries, and appear to be getting healthy again.
They’re scary. Sugarcoat that as much as you want.

Pruf, I am hoping Stoneburner gets bumped to tomorrow’s Trenton game when I am attending. It is also dual Killer B bobblehead night.
    ////

Yankfem, both SWB & Trenton in danger of missing the postseason. I’d be great if they both pull it out, or at least one. If neither does, that means no postseason starts for our two jewels…have fun at bobblehead night…I’m skipping that but planning to go to PNC on Sunday, if it’s Dellin…
I asked DC to find out from Dellin or Aldred if they’re still making the kid throw primarily FBs. It sure seems that way, although he didn’t answer me & doesn’t look like he will; spoiled by Ashmore ….I’m wondering if he’s avoiding contact because of it…Collins opined that although Dellin threw a ton of pitches, he still gave his team a chance to win (which they eventually did), but we’ve seen that from him even when he’s out of whack..I’m hoping Aldred can do what he did for Joba for Manny & Dellin & that it’s the final frontier before they can join the Yankees & beast for several years…nice play by Jeter…(replay of last night’s game).

  100. blake August 25th, 2011 at 11:21 am

Pruf, he was pitching to contact as recently as two games ago, but being asked to throw mostly FB’s will inevitably screw with the results. Coverage from AAA isn’t very good. I would rather have Ashmore’s info and videos than a report that is not pitching specific and a feed 3,000,000 miles away where you can barely see the ball. If the weather isn’t too bad, a drive to SWB may be worth the trip on Sunday. I am really looking forward to SWB playing in a park with decent cameras next year. SWB coverage is severely lacking.

Exactly. I wouldn’t expect them to do anything now. Or ever really. Unless they go into next season with the idea that Granderson should be hitting middle of the order which might open up a spot in the 1-2 range.

The guy doing the SWB games seemed to take it personally that people were asking Montero questions every five minutes…I can see how that’d be annoying, & he had some funny retorts & generally got us the info, but why wouldn’t people focus on a guy who’s been dubbed the next Frank Howard/Mike Piazza…? These are the Yankees, for chrissake…I get the feeling we won’t be indulged with Manny/Dellin questions, ala Ashmore or even ala Collins on Montero…Oh, well, only a few starts to go for them left, anyway..

blake, true and I don’t think we “fear” any pitcher. We just need to pitch ourselves, and I think we will. Also our bullpen should be a big advantage. I expect Sori will pitch very well, as long as he gets the reps and is healthy. If he is anything simliar to how he pitched for Rays last year, I will go to war with him, DRob and Mo.

Alex of course will be a key, as well. As per winning the division, I would love to see him get in a rhythm this week, so he can typically take advantage of Fenway in next week’s series.

While I am normally patient as heck, in Montero’s case regarding August vs. Sept callup, I don’t see patience as a virtue. He has too little time to get acclimated, and the Yankees tend to make rash decisions based on a few AB’s, so… not feeling a whole lot of warm, trusting feelings toward the delay in this case.

Considering Face didn’t even mention the 6th spot in other order don’t you think it’s fairly disingenuous to claim he was suggesting that?

Also in standard baseball jargon ‘middle of the order’ generally refers to 3-4-5 with emphasis on 3 and 4.

  119. J. Alfred Prufrock August 25th, 2011 at 11:40 am

yankfem, that’s why Ashmore is such a gamer…he really deserves a bigger beat, though I’m grateful he’s there in AA for us…agree on Montero, obviously…it’s looking more & more like a ceremonial callup, when it happens…him being in the dugout is nice for him, but they already coughed on giving him a real shot to help us, it seems…

    ===========================

Looking at their scedule ahead, I don’t see a reason either. One thing that is true is that these weekend series against the Yankees (and Red Sox) are their money makers. Maybe there is some concern about lost income by moving what amounts to 1 of 3 Saturday/Sunday games to Friday afternoon, thus hurting ‘em at the gate a little. Still, you’d think most of those tix are sold already. I don’t get it.

Any player can stink offensively. Jeter stunk for 1.7 years against righties. Why not stick with a guy who has proven he can score runs at a high pace? Over the past 3 seasons Gardner has proven he will hit around .270, get on base, steal bases, and score runs. Sounds like the guy you want hitting first vs his platoon matchup.

I remember a Buster Olney interview a few years back on ESPN Radio. He said Angelos, in a conversation he had with him, refused to give the Yankees ANY credit for their late 90′s dynasty, to the point of blindness. He basically said the guy just has Yankee rage. So, maybe it’s just spite.

  139. Hassey August 25th, 2011 at 12:00 pm

I have trouble wrapping my head around the idea that, of all things, our OFFENSE has literally given away 8-10 games this year. Some against the Sox, most not…last 2 against Oakland, 2 against Chisox back-to-back at home, which others am I forgetting?

Gardner is erratic because he isn’t a good enough hitter to consistently drive the ball. He’s gotten better at bunting, though, which will help him be more consistent. Unlike the Gardy Disciples here, I don’t care where the guy hits, or where anyone hits, as long as they hit…

Blake – Of course, but who would have thought that 3/4 of the way thru the season, we would have simply left so many wins on base…like dropping a carton of eggs when you get home from the grocery store. If you told me in March that our 3B/SS Defense was going to falter a bit or our bullpen injuries would result in late blown leads, I would have believed either of those scenarios more easily.

good for the Braves, depressing for Yankee fans…I was against him being moved, but all the house shills on the internet praised the Yanks for not prospect hugging a “single A” prospect who was “injury prone.” I wish the kid success, I really do, but he should be coming out of our bullpen, not the Braves’…if they had gotten a great arm for him, that would have been more justifiable…when you think Dunn was also in that trade, & Melky’s undergoing his first real slump but still hitting .300….& Logan is a day to day proposition….they should have given up higher A arms, but never the best or second best in the system…which he was at the time…AWFUL

You’re wrong, I don’t care. I want the best hitters getting the most PAs. You have a zeal for one guy’s realization as a leadoff hitter; you made a crusade out of it for how long in here? So you do care, because you want the best hitters getting the most PAs. vs RHP that wasn’t Jeter since 2010. Thankfully he has really turned it around *right now*, but you have to admit he was quite dicey there? And all I ever asked was for Gardner to leadoff vs RHP, the best lineup the Yankees can put out. I could almost understand Tuesday night when they were shutdown and couldn’t quite climb all the way back…they still had a chance but fumbled at the one yard line…oh well, 90 yard drives are hard to come by in the last 2 innings. But LAST night is completely differerent. They literally pi$$ed away the win, and Brett Gardners infield popup was like pi$$ing on the toilet seat by accident and splatting everwhere
