Burnett falls apart again

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Aug 26, 2011 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

A.J. Burnett did it again. Against a weak-hitting Orioles lineup, the Yankees theoretical No. 2 starter gave up nine runs through five innings and left the Yankees with a 12-5 loss that will have to linger. The Yankees won’t attempt to play again until Sunday now that Saturday’s doubleheader has been postponed because of Hurricane Irene. The Yankees, of course, are still trying to weather the storm of Burnett, who has a higher ERA than he had last season. In the second inning, he gave up six consecutive extra-base hits. The Yankees never came close to getting back in the game, despite home runs by Nick Swisher, Alex Rodriguez and Jorge Posada.

Too bad for AJ – he had a chance, with even just a decent outing, to cement his place in the rotation, but he failed miserably.

  2. Captain Clutch August 26th, 2011 at 10:03 pm

I can’t wait to hear Girardi’s post game. One bad inning, a couple of bad pitches. We have to get this guy going. Sooner or later Cash and Girardi have to run out of excuses. Everyone knows the only reason they cover for AJ is because they know he isn’t mentally tough to handle the criticism. But enough is enough already and they can’t keep giving up games every 5th day because of his joke of a contract.

  3. MG August 26th, 2011 at 10:03 pm

this was an easy after game post, Chad, you probably had this one written by the 3rd inning :(

So when Sunday’s doubleheader is postponed, when will they make up those games. Really stupid scheduling by the O’s.

    —————————————-

They will find a way to have ML baseball schedule a triple header with the Yankees only being able to use 13 players for each game.

  5. TheStraw August 26th, 2011 at 10:05 pm

This has to be it for AJ in the rotation…right? I mean, you can’t possibly excuse this outing twice in arrow when the whole world knows we have one too many in the rotation right now.

  6. MG August 26th, 2011 at 10:05 pm

I’d be really surprised if Girardi doesn’t at least acknowledge that Burnett’s performance is both a cause for concern and something they have to address in the post game press conference.

It’s sort of like the old joke with the punchline, ‘mom is on the roof’

If George was alive, this GUTLESS PU$$Y, Tin Man Burnett, would have been in tears the last three starts. This piece of garbage HAS NOT WON A GAME IN AUGUST IN HIS YANKEE CAREER!

Actually he got a win in KC. The rest is all true though.

I’m thinking the Yankees are going to have a lot of thinking to do because it doesn’t appear that AJ is going to conquer his difficulties. I would think it isn’t going to be easy for them to jettison him for a lot of reasons but I would also think that they realize that it may be a necessity. Not fun,

  11. mick August 26th, 2011 at 10:08 pm

It takes a long time before I give up on someone. With AJ I do so reluctantly because he’s still a Yankee, but it seems reasonable to call it a day, especially this late in the season.

  18. West Coast Yankee Fan August 26th, 2011 at 10:14 pm

I can’t believe that some so called fans will give up on a Yankee starter???? Sounds like a Red Sux fan to me!

  19. Captain Clutch August 26th, 2011 at 10:15 pm

The Yanks have to put AJ in the bullpen and try again next year, it’s not fair to the rest of the team. Even if Colon needs some time off Warren would be a better option than AJ. AJ’s delivery is awful and has no idea where the ball is going and his fastball is getting absolutely hammered in every start. They can’t continue to ignore the fact that he can’t get major leaguers out.

  20. Vineyard Yankee August 26th, 2011 at 10:15 pm

Noesi is on the ML Club. He could easily surpass what Burnett brings to this team both on and off the field.

  25. MG August 26th, 2011 at 10:18 pm

Burnett can’t stay in the rotation, it’s beyond ridiculous already.

He had good stuff tonight and still couldn’t get anyone out.

He doesn’t move guys off the plate, for a guy without good control there is absolutely no fear or intimidation and everyone has comfortable ABs up there.

Girardi runs the risk of losing the clubhouse over this because if anyone thinks the rest of the team is happy watching him get bombed in every start you just don’t know anything about baseball, these guys are competitors and hate seeing games go the way the last two starts by Burnett have gone.

AJ is very consistent. He either get hammered early in the game or in the 5th or 6th inning. Girardi with the famous line “This game is hard”. Give me a break he has been awful for 2 years now.

  36. Yankee Trader August 26th, 2011 at 10:24 pm

The best thing for AJ and the Yankees, will be to part ways. Since that’s not likely to happen till the offseason, the Yankees should just tell him to go home to his family tonight at his home in Maryland and don’t plan on coming back until at least rosters expand, if at all. They can just say Burnett has left the team for personal reasons.

  37. Benny Blanco August 26th, 2011 at 10:25 pm

    “AJ’s ERA speaks for itself.

Easy decision. You have 6 pitchers for 5 spots all of whom are pitching better than Burnett.

You want to maximize the chance your team wins.

I hope they can trade Burnett in the OS.

Eat most of his contract and make him disappear.

Joe is rightfully complaining about the scheduling of the game on September 8. He says it makes zero sense. Girardi, it makes perfect sense. The Orioles want to stick it to the Yankees because they despise the Yankees because they are greatly inferior to the Yankees.

“I think Joe would take AJ out of the rotation now if he could, but the DH coming up make it almost impossible”

I agree that with the DH coming up, they can’t remove him. However, I don’t think that they would anyway. They are paying this guy $16M. Cash has already proven that they refuse to admit that he stinks and that maybe they didn’t get the pitcher they signed up for. They are going to keep running him out there until we fans poke our eyes out with pens.

  56. Captain Clutch August 26th, 2011 at 10:31 pm

Good job by Girardi calling out the loser O’s. I don’t know why Selig gets paid so much money if the home team makes the decision not to play a DHer today and he does nothing. The O’s are a pathetic and jealous organization and the Yanks shouldn’t give into their bs of them trying to screw the Yanks.

  57. West Coast Yankee Fan August 26th, 2011 at 10:31 pm

Cashman: So Girardi why do you want to manage the Yankees?

I don’t take this POV on AJ easily.

I just see very little realistic hope that Burnett can help the Yankees this season, or possibly even going forward.

We have a lot of talent and to my mind AJ is just breathing oxygen and taking up valuable space.

I’m sure AJ wants to be better but that is not the point. He is hurting the team. It not a matter of his effort it’s his ability which now has come into question IMO.

I was really just speaking to the personality characteristic where he has true compassion. I think that’s a beautiful quality in a human being. He has shown, though, that he doesn’t always pander to feelings when it comes to making the tough decisions. He had to leave Jorge behind at one point, and he did it.

  86. West Coast Yankee Fan August 26th, 2011 at 10:42 pm

I have no clue why a guy his size doesn’t intimidate right handed batters by knocking some of them down like his buddy Beckett does all the time, it would get them waving a lot more at the curve ball and not sitting on the fastballs over the plate.

At the same time, it’s time for him to not be in the rotation, the only reason left is the number of doubleheaders coming up in the next two weeks if they don’t want to bring up a guy from the minors.

  92. Betsy August 26th, 2011 at 10:45 pm

This isn’t on Joe anymore, if it ever was – it’s on Cashman. They need a 6 man for now, so I’m sure no decision will be made right away, but I’m not going to hold my breath for Cashman to make the obvious decision.

It’s funny how whenever AJ gets hammered he always mentions that he didn’t give up in the game. For him to even mention that tells you he knows that he mentally checks out during the game when things go bad. Otherwise why would he even mention that? He is a weird, weird character.

  94. Betsy August 26th, 2011 at 10:46 pm

The thing is, while I would probably bring someone up from the minors, that next turn would be in Fenway, so that’s not a place I’d want a rookie to pitch

  95. NYY fan in NH August 26th, 2011 at 10:47 pm

Noesi for AJ or bring up one of a group of Warren, Mitchell and Phelps. AJ cannot see a pitchers mound for awhile. This isn’t turning around in 5 days. No more chances Girardi. Enough is enough with this guy.

  96. Purenyyankee August 26th, 2011 at 10:48 pm

Are you kidding me that they are really going to march this Tin Man out on the Fenway mound next week.Let’s just give the AL East away.

“Burnett is actually saying the right thing, that he doesn’t pitch inside nearly enough and needs to do that more.”

I was thinking the same thing. That’s what you want a pitcher to be saying. You don’t want him to be saying that he believes he stinks and his career is over!

I also agree that it’s time for him to not be in the rotation. Now if something dramatic happens where he turns into a class A pitcher all of a sudden, well that’s different (not saying it’s going to.) Short of that, he needs to be utilized in other ways.

  98. MTU August 26th, 2011 at 10:49 pm

I think I really crossed the Rubicon with Burnett tonight.

For me there is no turning back.

It’s nothing personal. I’d love to drink a beer with the guy.

I don’t think it’s a lack of effort on his part. I wanted him to succeed. I’m sure we all did.

It’s a lack of ability. He needs to change the way he pitches and I do not believe he can accomplish that in season.

It might be better if everyone concerned just found a way to move on.

For now. he needs to be marginalized so as to cause the least amount of damage going forward.

    :(

    15-5 Oakland over Sux!

Burnett stunk in 2010; this is no surprise to anyone. Cashman knew in December that Lee stiffed him and Pettitte was retiring. The dependence on Burnett and the state of the rotation is on him.

  101. MG August 26th, 2011 at 10:51 pm

if I’m the Yankees (and I’ve said this before) I eat $20M on his contract and trade him as far away as possible to a National League team in the offseason.

The Marlins are opening a new stadium next year and are very cheap, that would seem like a good place to send him as a replacement for Vazquez.

MTU – you’ve said it all. You’ve spoken everything I am thinking and feeling about the situation.

  103. mick August 26th, 2011 at 10:55 pm

    AJ “I have great stuff.”
    Joe “It’s hard.”
Where is this Busch league ?
    I like twisted fruitcake.

  104. trisha - true pinstriped blue August 26th, 2011 at 10:55 pm

Does everyone remember how this happened in Baltimore once before? We got jobbed two games because of some decision to let the Yankees play in a monsoon and the game had to be called, I believe Moose was on the mound. And then when the game was picked up it forced Andy to have to pitch on extra rest and the results were disastrous.

    Something like that.

  105. MTU August 26th, 2011 at 10:58 pm

    Trisha-

Believe me when I say I say it with a heavy heart.

I want all of our guys to thrive. If they succeed we succeed. The team becomes better because of it.

I feel bad for the guy. i know he’s trying his best. I just feel even worse for his team mates who are counting on him to keep them in games.

I’m going to bed soon, and I normally have good dreams but tonight who knows ?

By the way, It’s good to see you around. stay safe.

  106. RSM August 26th, 2011 at 10:58 pm

Stuart is right. This situation with AJ is making Joe and Cash look very bad – no b@lls.
Players need to be held accountable or management just looks weak.

I was not a big Steinbrenner fan, but he would NEVER have let this go on -
    AJ would be long gone

“Dependence on Burnett” In case you forgot AJ is signed through 2013.

After Lee who exactly was he supposed to sign? Maybe somebody like Colon or Garcia. Oh yeah, how has that worked out.

What a joke you are. And how has Hughes pitched this year? I guess that’s Cashman’s fault as well.

Actually Betsy schooled you this year when it came to Hughes. maybe you should stick to causing trouble, at least you can say you are good at it.

  109. trisha - true pinstriped blue August 26th, 2011 at 11:09 pm

MTU – thanks. :) It’s nice to be around my friends again and sharing the Yankee experience.

I’ve battened down the hatches and am just waiting for the fun to begin. Definitely eerily the calm before the storm here. For most of the day, it was quite warm but dry. Suddenly the dew point is up to 74 degrees. So you know something ‘s on its way.

  110. Tar August 26th, 2011 at 11:10 pm

I don’t think so Mick. Fire with fire it’s the new me.

  111. West Coast Yankee Fan August 26th, 2011 at 11:12 pm

Looks like Tar the hypocrite is not practicing what he preaches and is out to disrupt the blog given that the conversation is about baseball. He obviously has a serious problem.

I was a hundred percent right about Hughes, he is not pitching meaningless innings in the pen is he? And he is an important part of the future Yankees rotation isn’t he. Ooops well, he missed that one.

  112. West Coast Yankee Fan August 26th, 2011 at 11:12 pm

Tar the new you is impotent and oh so lame.

aj burnett is becoming a major joke.if steinbrenner were still alive burnett would be long gone.the yankees have eaten bag contracts before.they have to release burnett now before he costs them a playoff or world series game or series.he was laughing on the mould last night. what a f—— joke he is.eat the remaining 32m they have enough money coming off the books to offset his contract.really all they have to do is raise tickets 25cents and they can make up the difference.money is not the problem for the yankees.cashman is the problem.he will not admit he made a mistake with burnett.he had all year to fix the yankees bench problem and did nothing.does aj have some pictures of cashman or something.why is this man putting up with this laughing stock of baseball.let him be someone else problem.enough is enough.they had a great stat on aj on the internet. everytime he pitches at home the attendence is down some 3000 people.you mulitply that by his 15 starts at home and that becomes a lot of people and MONEY.
