    Hoping this storm lessens or veers right.

    How many of the 5 games do you guys think they’ll get in?

    Today. Rain out Saturday, DH on Sunday and Monday?

  2. upstate kate August 26th, 2011 at 3:41 pm

    what??? no Po at 2nd?? after his sterling debut?

  3. Erin August 26th, 2011 at 3:45 pm

    Holy crap. Somebody did ask him. 8O

    eboland11 Reporter asked Jeter about Minka. His reply (politely but a little irritated): “that’s the end of the questions.”

    I’m thinking they’ll be lucky to get four games in this weekend.

    Three games might be more realistic, which would really suck.

    One guess as to what idiot reporter asked that question.

    if some of these games have to be made up in NY – who gets the gate proceeds/concession profits? if it’s the orioles that could explain why the could care less about rain outs this weekend since they’d get more $ if these games were at YS.

  22. GreenBeret7 August 26th, 2011 at 3:59 pm

    GFm Matthews was my guess. Heyman’s too gutless. Do Sherman and King ever get out of the office to attend games or just watch it on TV?

  25. RadioKev August 26th, 2011 at 4:01 pm

    Howard,

    Saw your message. Gotcha. There’s no doubt Adrian Gonzalez is a great player. I was just making the point that IW doesn’t have much value in MVP discussions. We’re on the same page.

    Meanwhile,

    It’s pretty rude that someone asked Jeter that question. No real excuse for that.

  26. Laura - I Bleed Blue August 26th, 2011 at 4:01 pm

    I’m not surprised that a reporter asked the question and I’m not surprised by Jeter’s answer. Unfortunately, we live in a world where the general public believes that they are entitled to know the private business of celebrities. Just because you have a very public job doesn’t mean that your personal life is supposed to be public as well. 31. Yanks78 August 26th, 2011 at 4:05 pm

    “Do Sherman and King ever get out of the office to attend games or just watch it on TV?”

    Sherman only comes to important games or games where there are storylines or something for him to write about or investigate. He is like O’Connor now. I doubt he is in Baltimore this weekend.

    I don’t think the general public feels they are entitled to know, they want to know. The media gives the people what they want. The celebrity TMZ oriented gossip industry is a billion dollar one. This is an indictment of western society, it’s no different in Europe, perhaps worse.

    I worked for a while at the National Enquirer when they were based in Connecticut. The rule in the newsroom then was that “If a person has a publicist, you can say anything about them, short of libel”. A picture of Farrah Fawcett on the cover was worth an extra 100,000 sales.

    Munson with all due respect that is not true. All media content is measured by public interest and demand. Without this, there would be no financial motive to provide content. It’s just like the drug industry, demand drives the marketplace. Drugs are not the creation of the smugglers and dealers.

If it wasn’t for having 400 channels and the internet covering all of this, most people wouldn’t know, or care, about whether J-lo puts mustard or ketchup on her hot dog. The O’s organization are a bunch of jealous losers. Selig should be the one to make the decision on when teams play a DH and not the home team. Just because the Yanks are a big money maker and the O’s hate the Yanks they shouldn’t have the right to make the decision in this type of situation. They are just trying to screw up their schedule as much as possible.

  61. West Coast Yankee Fan August 26th, 2011 at 5:33 pm

    I mentioned this a while ago. The Yankees only have two off days in September:

    * the 8th (the day before a game in Anaheim – flying from New York)

    * the 15th (the day before a game in Toronto – flying from Seattle)

    (Baltimore flies to Toronto on the 8th for a game on the 9th. And to Anaheim on the 15th for a game on the 16th)

    Play a single-admission DH tonight

    Game 1 – 7:00-10:00 PM
    Game 2 – 10:30 PM-1:30 AM

    Then reschedule tomorrow’s game to 2:30 PM and play as many innings as the weather allows.

  68. Betsy August 26th, 2011 at 5:36 pm

    Kay needs to not go on the air from now on and pretend he thinks the Yankees have a shot when he said several times on his radio show that, because of their pitching, they have NO shot to beat any of the playoff teams. I agree with him philosophically about the pitching – it’s no great shakes – but his worry about Nova as a rookie was completely overstated. Rookies have pitched well in playoff games – no reason to think Nova will be overwhelmed

  69. Captain Clutch August 26th, 2011 at 5:37 pm

    The roster could get interesting this weekend if AJ or another starter gets knocked out early. I would think they have a starting pitcher in AAA on standby just incase they need another pitcher.

    I’m still mystified why people actually listen to Kay’s radio show.

    He irritates the hell out of me during a YES broadcast. I can’t imagine listening to him for an additional 3 hours a day.

  75. BTX August 26th, 2011 at 5:40 pm

    Not sure Monday afternoon is ideal either if the Os are looking to get the most gate. Weather is supposed to be fine, but who knows about flooding and the like. MLB might make the Yankees play a DH on Monday, Boston-series looming or not.

    The only other options are to play a DH at Yankee Stadium when the Os come in (this has happened before, most notably when Cleveland played “home” games at Seattle to make up for that snowstorm) or to forfeit the off-day and play before we go to LAA.

    There is no way they can schedule a DH on one of the off-days. So I’m not sure what they do about that 2nd game.

  76. Betsy August 26th, 2011 at 5:42 pm

    Blake, lol.

    The O’s are not going to do anything to help the Yankees; that’s Angelos for you.

    Well GF, I needed to listen to something and I just put him on- I don’t get good reception of 1050 anyway, so it’s not like I listen to it all the time. I agreed with most of what he said anyway – just not the point I mentioned.

    “I hate to complain but its just amazing to me the the greatest organization in sports can’t find someone better than Michael Kay to broadcast their games.”

    I guess I’m in the minority, but Kay doesn’t bother me that much. The one thing he does that irritates me is when he exaggerates how far a ball has traveled to the outfield. He makes it sound like the ball is on it’s way out of the park, yet the camera clearly shows Brett Gardner catching it nowhere near the wall. Other than that, I don’t think he’s as offensive as the FOX or ESPN announcers.

    I hate to complain but its just amazing to me the the greatest organization in sports can’t find someone better than Michael Kay to broadcast their games.

    Singleton and Cone should be doing the games. They work well together. But the Yanks have to have a million guys doing the games. And unfortunately, Kay makes everyone worse instead of better.

    We should not hate to complain. Michael Kay does not hate making every broadcast about himself and about plugging his stuff, we should do whatever is needed to have him fired. Petition?

    Singleton is my favorite……….I love him

  92. Niblick August 26th, 2011 at 6:04 pm

    Singleton is a good broadcaster, but somehow every play ends up being about him. I’ve never heard anyone talk so much about what they did when they played. He was a good player, but he was no Babe Ruth. It sometimes gets tiring listening to him talk about himself.

    It doesn’t matter whether it’s King, Sherman, Kay, Heyman, Lupica, Matthews etc. the common denominator here is that most here dislike them for whatever reason. They have a job to do just like anyone else. If their bosses disliked their job performance they would be fired.

    I have 90% faith that AJ will give up 12 or fewer runs tonight.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    He should have pitched yesterday. He’s proven before that he needs a large cusion of runs to work with.
    Stadium is next to the inner harbor. Looking at weather.com, not always very accurate, rain increases to 100% by 4PM tomorrow with wind increasing then. Saturday’s 1st game will be lucky to get in 5 innings if they still start it at 1:05. Hope by the time that game is over the parking lots aren’t flooded. Game 2 and Sunday will be cancelled IMO. Monday they’ll play a DH. It should be at 12 noon and 5PM.
    if games are made up in NY, how do they split the gate?
    Did anybody else see Jorge check the runner on 3rd for that final out.
    That game was a comedy.
    Jorge checking the runner with 2 out up 14.
    Can’t make that up…
    Well at least they don’t show clips of Singleton like they do of O’Neill. He talks about his playing days also.
  98. muddyduck August 26th, 2011 at 6:20 pm
    Niblick,
    That’s interesting because I tend to enjoy Singleton’s stories. I don’t find them self-aggrandizing or self-indulgent but rather interesting insights into the life/career of a former player.
    Beyond that, I find he’s just got an ideal broadcasting voice: smooth, dulcet tones.
    Jorge has become a caveman/child. I saw him standing and staring the other day when a pitch came too close to Cano. Many times in the dugout he can be seen sitting unassumedly minding his own business. Other times he’s like a mischievous little boy. He can be dour but he’s as happy as a lark when they win. He’s a gamer.
    GF – A year ago, I took care of a small child in my unit. I can’t remember too much about him (he did very well, and had an uncomplicated course, the kind that you don’t remember long term). But, what I do recall is that his family had a connection to Michael Kay; he was a good friend of a cousin, something like that. Anyway, they had a family event, a cookout or something, for another child who had cancer. A fundraiser/birthday party, if I remember correctly. Anyway, midway thru the affair, Kay shows up – and, he brought along some entertainer (clown for the kids, a juggler, I can’t remeber, but it doesn’t matter) just to e the sick kid happy. He stayed late, had his picture taken with everyone there, signed autographs, and accordingly to the family was as gracious and personable as you’d want.
    I realize that Kay’s shtick is not for everyone. He can grate at times, no getting around that. But, for at least for that one day and for that one child, he did a good deed. To me, that outweighs many sins.
    Later. Be well, and I hope all in harm’s way this weekend stay safe.
  101. Niblick August 26th, 2011 at 6:28 pm
    Yeah, but at least Paulie played with the Yanks. And we loved him. Singleton’s stupid stories about the O’s and the Expos. Who wants to hear those stories? Not me.
  102. mick August 26th, 2011 at 6:33 pm
    They all hate Kay. Flaherty esp. They told them to calm down as they were constantly sniping at each other. O’Neill literally laughs at Kay in the intros. They told Kay to keep his thumb in his pocket when he introduced ONeill as he would point at him.
  103. muddyduck August 26th, 2011 at 6:36 pm
    Joe,
    Thanks for sharing that story. I am a teacher and while I can’t claim to work with children in conditions of serious illness, I do get to know my share of those whose lives are far from harmonious, usually due to divisive familial issues.
    Regardless of popular opinion about Kay (I generally enjoy his call) it was nice to hear of his taking the time to bring a moment of brightness and levity to a child in need. It is lovely to simply see a smile on their face.
    Cheers!
