Irene whipping through Baltimore

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Aug 27, 2011 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

I’ll be honest, I considered this a pretty underwhelming weather event until just recently.

Rain has been falling pretty steadily for a while now here in Baltimore, and now the wind has really picked up. The streets are pretty deserted, but occasionally some brave — dumb? — folks will come sprinting and screaming up the street, apparently trying to outrun Irene.

Hope all of you back in New York and all along the coast are safe and sound.

Hope players won’t get too drunk with their final day off of the season!
I mean I am sure AJ is already hammered. Would be lovely if Irene took him somewhere far far away…

Originally I thought that was a photo from your hotel window.

I thought to myself that I was just there this morning and I don’t remember it looking like that.

And note to future first time visitors to Baltimore…. If you have a choice of staying in the downtown area or the harbor area, choose the latter.

    ———

Absolutely pouring in NYC right now.

  4. TheStraw August 27th, 2011 at 10:53 pm

This damn storm has Sox now 3 games played more than Yanks. With the possibility of both games being washed out tomorrow, it could go to four….teams are still tied in loss column but unfortunately these games will have to be made up which results in scheduling nightmare and therefore distinct disadvantage for Yanks. Goddamn O’s might really affect our outcome down the stretch here because of their refusal to play an extra game Yesterday.

It’s ok to actually talk about baseball in here, right?

  5. Purenyyankee August 27th, 2011 at 10:58 pm

TheStraw: You are right on the mark. More reason to give The Tin Man some time off given a sure loss every time he takes the mound. I’m sick of Stubborn Cash-Man. Get one of those killer B’s to start and stop babying these damn kids.

    It’s ok but highly unusual.

    This place needs an enema.

  7. TheStraw August 27th, 2011 at 11:01 pm

    Pure-

I agree– they are going to have to bring up Warren or one of the other kids to spot start at some point during this stretch of games. Simply cannot give up a game every sixth day by trotting AJ out there.

  8. Betsy August 27th, 2011 at 11:02 pm

Well it’s not underwhelming now………………unbelievably heavy rain right now on LI. I always worry about heavy rain and wind – sleep won’t be easy tonight, mostly because it will be hard to fall and to stay asleep.

  9. Yanksgal07 August 27th, 2011 at 11:04 pm

You stay safe too Chad…along with the Yanks …

    Go Yankees 2011 !!

  10. Betsy August 27th, 2011 at 11:04 pm

That’s the way the ball bounces, can’t do anything about it. The Sox are going to have a pretty big pitching advantage when the two teams do meet………….I’d rather Joe rest his players even if it means sacrificing the division – since the schedule is not otherwise going to do us any favors.

  11. Jacob Ruppert August 27th, 2011 at 11:05 pm

    Betsy-

I was in NYC yesterday visiting the in-laws, but we made the decision to leave this am and come back home upstate to Rochester. Glad we did, but sending good wishes the way of you and all who have to ride this out.

  13. GreenBeret7 August 27th, 2011 at 11:08 pm

The only column that matters is the loss column and they are tied there.

  14. West Coast Yankee Fan August 27th, 2011 at 11:10 pm

I’d rather we had four games in hand than the Sux. We might control our own destiny. Just win the games.

  15. Triple Short of a Cycle August 27th, 2011 at 11:11 pm

    Betsy,

Why will it be hard to fall and stay asleep?

  16. TheStraw August 27th, 2011 at 11:12 pm

    GB-

I agree, but they will have to make up those games at some point, and therefore winning those games becomes important. Still think that MLB (read: Selig) put the screws to the Yanks a bit here.

  17. Betsy August 27th, 2011 at 11:12 pm

Straw, good decision – hope everything is ok up there with you. We’ll be ok – my biggest worry now is this chirping we continue to hear in the house. I don’t think it’s the carbon monoxide monitor, but I can’t be positive. I thought we caught the culprit when we got the cricket, but it appears not. We brought in all our outdoor furniture and all our plants….. I can’t wait for this to be over; I hate feeling so insecure.

  18. Betsy August 27th, 2011 at 11:13 pm

Triple, I am a very, very light sleeper – I’ll probably be ok falling asleep, but I know that the wind and rain will wake me up – it always does. Oh well – there are worse things to be sure.

  19. luis August 27th, 2011 at 11:14 pm

    Guys,

For those on the path of Irene, please stay safe and indoors, I hope everything goes well.

    Later

  20. TheStraw August 27th, 2011 at 11:15 pm

We are well out of the path of Irene up here, but actually have a light rain system moving down from Canada tomorrow, so we wll be getting a little wet too.

  21. Triple Short of a Cycle August 27th, 2011 at 11:16 pm

    Betsy,

Me too. I can barely stay asleep for more then 3 hours at a time. Sucks

  22. Betsy August 27th, 2011 at 11:20 pm

Triple, I can stay asleep – but I’m way too sensitive to light or noise. Of course, regular rain or wind doesn’t wake me up, but this kind does. My problem is going to sleep at a normal hour -something I haven’t done in weeks (and it’s starting to catch up to me)

  23. Betsy August 27th, 2011 at 11:21 pm

Straw, in a week where the East Coast has an earthquake, who could have figured that wouldn’t be the big story, lol? I’m so tired of rain – this summer, I feel like NY is Florida -hot, humid and a threat of rain every day

  24. Bronx Jeers August 27th, 2011 at 11:22 pm

Sox play 7 of their last 10 against the hapless Orioles

  26. Jacob Ruppert August 27th, 2011 at 11:34 pm

that is 7 free wins if the Red Sox need them. loss column is all that matters, but 4 more wins is 4 more wins. gotta hope Yanks win at least 3 of those 4 games that Yanks have yet to play

  27. pft2 August 28th, 2011 at 12:44 am

‘’ll be honest, I considered this a pretty underwhelming weather event until just recently.”

For NY and most of New England, it should be the equivalent of strong Nor’Easter w/o the snow/ice.

  28. Nilsson August 28th, 2011 at 1:30 am

One HUGE difference between a winter Nor Easter and a hurricane hitting the eastern coasts. It’s the floods and tidal surges. That’s the major concern.

  29. MTU August 28th, 2011 at 7:34 am

I doubt anybody is up this early.

Those in Irene’s path I hope you fared well.

In September of 1979 I was in Martinique when a category 5, Hurricane David whipped thru the island, sending all of us at a Club Med to evacuate to a school in town, sleeping on the floors while 150-160mph winds were ripping off tin roofs across the street. Scary for us and our families who had no way of finding out if we were safe.

Onto baseball. If you like to peruse sports news about all sports and all teams go to prosportsdaily.com.

This article in the NY Daily News questions why Girardi still needs a 6 man rotation and the latest quote from Cashman on Burnett:

He was very bad,” Cashman said Saturday when reached by telephone.

Joe Girardi indicated Friday night that he was not prepared to take Burnett out of the rotation, citing the Yankees’ upcoming schedule.

“With all these doubleheaders, we’ve got to play games,” Girardi said. “We need six men.”

Asked if Burnett might benefit from being skipped a turn in the rotation, Girardi immediately shot down the idea.

“We can’t,” Girardi said. “I don’t know if we can. Look at our schedule.”

The schedule, however, may not be as dire a situation for the Yankee rotation as Girardi contends.

The Yankees are slated to play a split doubleheader Sunday, then another one against the Rays, which will likely be scheduled sometime during the Sept. 20-22 series in the Bronx.

That means that between Monday and Sept. 20, the Yankees will play 21 games in 22 days – four turns through the starting rotation – without the need for a sixth starter.

Cashman wouldn’t speculate on Burnett’s future in the rotation.

September 1989 – Hurricane Hugo, a category 5 hurricane, carved its path from the Caribbean until it made a direct hit on Charleston, South Carolina. Its 20 foot storm surge and 160 mph winds caused an estimated 7 billion dollars in damage, and claimed 50 lives in the United States, the Caribbean, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

    MTU-

I’ve mentioned this before, but I think that Cashman should tell Burnett to just stay at his home 30 minutes north of the Baltimore stadium, try and clear his mind, and he will be brought back to the team when rosters expand, after the Boston series on 9/2 in NY when the Yankees play Toronto.

Just say he’s out for personal reasons.

The Yankees can call up one of their AAA pitchers for the 9/1 Thursday game in Boston. Start Noesi for 3 innings and sub in some AAA pitcher/pitchers to get you thru 6 innings.

Know how you feel about Burnett. He is so frustrating to watch. That’s why I turned the game off after he was giving up XBH after XBH. For him to say he needs to pitch inside at this point in the season is ridiculous. 20 wild pitches so far. Does he want the record for hit batsman. They always talk about his physical tools. He just doesn’t have the mental makeup to pitch for the NY Yankees and hopefully the Yankees will find him another home in the offseason.

  53. Yankee Trader August 28th, 2011 at 8:53 am

Originally I thought it was going to be Nova for game 1. I guess with the extra girth that Colon has, they figure that he’ll be less likely to be affected by the windy conditions that are anticipated for the afternoon game! :)

  55. Villa Nova-Ya August 28th, 2011 at 8:57 am

I’m not gonna nitpick over Girardi’s post-game statements about the 6-man rotation going forward. Give the man a chance to sit down with his GM, his coaches and the schedule to work it through. In the moment comments really are meaningless, except as to mood, and it was pretty evident to most people watching that there is concern over AJ and even the public relations effort of trying to show support was half-hearted, if it was even there at all after Friday night.

  56. MTU August 28th, 2011 at 9:00 am

    YT-

I feel sorry for Burnett in some ways because I believe he wants to contribute.

He is not a slacker or anything like that.

The problem with him as I, and many other see it, is that he no longer has the kind of stuff that allows as many mistakes.

He really needs to reinvent the way he pitches.

I don’t see how he can do that on the fly.

If the Yankees somehow think he is going to turn into Mr. Consistency
w/o it I think they are just clutching at straws, or they believe in the Tooth fairy.

As I said above. Burnett is not even a replacement level Pitcher at this time.

    That is really bad.

He was the best option out there at the time but overall he has been a tremendous disappointment.

I favor acknowleding that and just moving on.

I have crossed the Rubicon on him.

You’re right. Girardi, the coaches and Cashman will get this ironed out.

Right now all of them must have concerns with the pitching going forward.

The relief staff has not been shutdown and at one point this week had 3 days in a row where they allowed inherited runners to score.

  60. MaineYankee August 28th, 2011 at 9:08 am

    MTU

As I see it the biggest problem with Burnett is that with his natural ability he never learned how to pitch.

Now that his ability is diminished he doesn’t seem to have the ability to adjust.

  61. MTU August 28th, 2011 at 9:12 am

    MY-

    I agree.

That is practically impossible to do in season anyway.

The funny thing is that Burnett has a very effective 3rd pitch. A CU.

He tends to keep it in his back pocket though.

If he wants to get back on track I think he will need to learn a new style in the OS.

My opinion is that it will be very difficult for him because his mechanics also stink.

    I’m for moving on.

    Salvage some bucks.

Let him be someone else’s headache.

  62. Villa Nova-Ya August 28th, 2011 at 9:13 am

    MTU -

It would be so much easier to deal with AJ and his “situation” if he WAS a slacker or a lousy teammate and crummy individual.

But he’s none of those, which does make the circumstances even more difficult. But how many chances does he get? There is not so much time left in the season anymore. Boston did not have it’s customary August swoon. I think the Yankees do get to the playoffs, but you can’t chalk up one game every 5 days to a loss, you just can’t.

At this point, I seriously think that the options from SWB look a lot more of a sure thing than giving AJ any more starts down the stretch. Only another 3 (4?) days until reinforcements can be put in place.

  63. MTU August 28th, 2011 at 9:14 am

You don’t want the bullpen to be giving up those inherited runners, but they have been so shut-down, I’m pretty much at the point where I say a little slump was due. As long as it doesn’t carry over to another round, if you know what I mean.

Here’s what I don’t get. I went to MacDonald’s last night and the market and worker’s at both said they are going to be open today. If you know a hurricane is on its way and a state of emergency has already been declared, don’t you kind of tell everyone to stay home? First of all, how many people are going to go out in this stuff to buy anything (cost/benefit analysis). Secondly, but most important, aren’t you jeopardizing the safety of your workers? Geesh.

  69. LA West August 28th, 2011 at 9:22 am

New to this blog and I have not read too many previous posts…sorry…didn’t do any homework…just wanted to comment on AJ and on the Baltimore situation with postponed games.

AJ is a good pitcher that just can’t do it for the Yankees for some reason. His stuff is nasty! But for whatever reason, it’s not working here. Someone called a sports talk show and suggested that Posada catch for him next time out…why not? Could it get any worse than the last 2 starts? But he can throw 94 on the corners and a curve that looks like a whiffle ball. I actually kind of feel sorry for him when he struggles.

Yanks and Yankee fans need to stop whining about the makeup games…folks…it a baseball game!!! They are gonna have to play on an off day?….awwwwww…puh-lease…give me a break!

They will have September call-ups and whoever needs a rest can rest. They sound like a bunch of prima donnas and Girardi sounds like a tool complaining about this. Imagine how a guy riding buses in the minors feels listening to these guys complaining. They should worry about other things.

Sorry if this is old news.

    MTU

He has been using the CU more this year.

His biggest problem is he had been able to get by with poor location because of his velocity and movement.

Now his velocity has dimminished and movement isn’t as good so it tends to leak over the plate and is very hittable.

He doesn’t appear as one that is able to make the needed adjustment.

I don’t see how the Yankees can continue with A.J. after this season.

If they did and the results were the same it could eventually cause problems within the clubhouse.

  72. Yankee Trader August 28th, 2011 at 9:25 am

Another article from the NY daily News “inappropriately” entitled in my opinion
“Yankees fans have GM Brian Cashman to blame for giving them A.J. Burnett and his terrible struggles.”
    by Mike Lupica

Not fair but the article is interesting. Look at the results of the vote for worst Yankee pitcher pickup.

So now Burnett is 19-26 over the last two years with this Yankee team. But then Yankee fans ought to be used to guys like this. Randy Johnson’s ERA in 2006 was an even 5.00. Javy Vazquez, who amazingly got a second tour of duty here after the way he pitched in 2004 (all the way through the grand slam he served up to Johnny Damon in Game 7 against the Red Sox), was 10-10 last year with a 5.32 ERA.

Old friend Kevin Brown was 14-13 during his brief two-year run here, with a 4.09 ERA, one year and then 6.50 the next as he was breaking down. Jaret Wright, who got a big start against the Tigers in the 2006 playoffs, was 16-12 during two seasons, and 4.49 one year and then a sparkling 6.97 the next. So it goes. Jon Lieber, who was 14-8 in 2004 with a 4.33, was a genius move compared to these guys.

    I’m not a psychiatrist/psychologist, but i did stay at a HIE once!

Physically AJ has all the tools. As a Yankee going forward, mentally he’s finished.

The Yankees don’t need him to start another game this year. In fact he needn’t pitch in a relief role either, as he won’t make the playoff roster for the ALDS.

Somehow he’ll be moved in the offseason!

    “Milk of human kindness”

    Lady Macbeth:
Glamis thou art, and Cawdor, and shalt be
What thou art promis’d. Yet do I fear thy nature,
It is too full o’ th’ milk of human kindness
    To catch the nearest way.

    Macbeth Act 1, scene 5, 15–18
To Lady Macbeth, the “milk of human kindness” is distasteful stuff—no self-respecting man has any use for it. Therefore, when we use the phrase to approve someone’s compassion, we reverse the original sentiment.

    So sayest Shakespeare

I hope we don’t lose electricity but it looks like the wind has died down. Everyone know how things are faring in Brooklyn by the water? One of my dear friends refused to evacuate and lives on the beach. I haven’t yet reached him this morning.

Trisha, how is RI? I just came back from there last week. Newport. Hope the islands are still intact. My home away from home…

“Keep your head down. The back side of the Irene may still pack a wallop.”

I think the eye has pretty much disintegrated. It picked up a lot of dry air over the last 8 -10 hours which is a hurricane’s kryptonite. I’m assuming what’s left of the eye is overhead now as there’s some blue sky overhead. We had about 5-6″ of rain here in 12-14 hours but the wind has been very tame. Gusty but nothing really sustained.

The one he’s watching now is a Donald Duck one made in 1938……wonder if they ever thought when they we’re drawing these characters that 73 years later kids would still be watching them…..on their touch screen and wireless tablets?

mick, Colon can’t if he is pitching today. I have been in storm mode for last couple of days, so not locked in on pitching order as I usually would be. Anyway, who knows what we will get from any given pitcher on a given day? Freddy pitched pretty darn well last time out vs. Boston. No guarantees.

Last year was a very good year for the Yankee minor leagues. This year, not so much. The top prospects struggled and the next tier had a lot of injuries. The teams’ records are worse than normal. I expect the ranking will decline somewhat. It is a shame Heathcott can’t stay healthy, but Williams may be a better player. He is one to watch.

Williams owned from first day in SI. They wanted him to play short season to work on plate discipline, but you can see why initially everyone was thinking he would start in Charleston. SI wasn’t that much of a challenge, at least in terms of his numbers. Heathcott really hit a peak; it was too bad he got hurt. Would love to have him return 100% healthy, but got to be concerned about a potential chronic shoulder problem.

Betsy, no Chase Wrights, but I think these kids would do a much better job. Still I don’t expect it.

  206. Betsy August 28th, 2011 at 11:01 am

No thank you to any article written by Lupica. Besides, I had no problem the AJ’s signing – I thought he was a good risk given that we needed pitching badly (and I didn’t want Derek Lowe). If he had just stayed the ok pitcher he was in 2009 instead of dropping off so badly, things would have been more palatable. No one could have predicted he wouldn’t be at least decent.

Just lost internet for a second there, as the wind picks up.

Yes, I actually have candles lit right now… although not sure that Sterling and candlelight isn’t an oxymoron.

Yep, Betsy, Alex’s bat would be very useful about now. However, I still think our pitching will be better than we expect it to be.

Ubaldo has averaged less than 6 IP’s since coming to the AL.

  243. Bret The Hitman August 28th, 2011 at 11:37 am

The staff looks good with Haren, Greinke or Ubaldo as the #2. Now that Jered Weaver is off the board, Cashman will have even more difficulty finding a better asking price for starters this winter. Without Colon and Garcia next year and considering what has happened with Burnett, the rotation really looks vulnerable moving forward.

  262. yankeefeminista August 28th, 2011 at 11:44 am

Bret, the reason we are developing pitching is so that we are not beholden to other teams. No way we won’t have strong pitching next year. We have not only system guys, but trade chips if someone viable becomes available, and likely we’ll retain one of Colon/Freddy. I am not worried about next year at all.

  263. 86w183 August 28th, 2011 at 11:44 am

Bret I may be wrong but it seems like you spend all your time worrying about next season. Why not try to enjoy this one and see how it plays out…. we have Nov-Feb to worry about the 2010 rotation.

You remind me of college football recruitniks who are obsessed with the 18 year old five-star studs that their team might sign and then pay little if any attention to what they do once they get on campus.

  264. mick August 28th, 2011 at 11:45 am

M, thanks for that heads up on Freddy tmw…good news.

  265. Bret The Hitman August 28th, 2011 at 11:45 am

Garcia provides depth but the front of the staff is very vulnerable. They really can’t compete in 2012 if Cashman pulls his standing pat routine and his “I like the team as it is” BS.

They had a room on the side that some of the players were playing mlb 11 the show and then the whole team came in for a team meeting which when I walked by looked a lot like a fantasy football draft. It was just awesome bumping into the players and being able to say hi and talk to them for a bit. the hotel was very strict on autographs and pictures though.
