Britton vs. Yankees

TIME/TV: 1:35 p.m., YES Network
* Don’t forget, today’s radio broadcast will be on WFAN

WEATHER: Still pretty windy from left to right, but it looks like the rain is finished. Looks to me like the Yankees are going to play both games today.

UMPIRES: HP John Hirschbeck, 1B Laz Diaz, 2B Vic Carapazza, 3B Wally Bell

SECOND TIME’S A CHARM: On Friday, the Yankees fell to 21-22 in series openers this season. However, tey have rebounded to go 29-13 in the second game of series.

PLAYING TWO (AGAIN): The Yankees are playing their third day-night doubleheader of the season. It’s their second doubleheader against (also July 30 at Yankee Stadium, a Yankees sweep). This is the Yankees first doubleheader in Camden Yards since 1999, when they split. This is the first time the Yankees have played two doubleheaders against Baltimore in the same season since 1996.

LIKE DEREK: Derek Jeter will become one of three active players to lead their current teams in games played. The others are Todd Helton (Rockies) and Michael Young (Rangers).

UPDATE, 2:20 p.m.: Jeter could break his shin on a foul ball, and he’d still argue to stay in the game. He literally looked wobbly stepping back in the box.

UPDATE, 2:25 p.m.: Colon looking a little more like the guy the Yankees saw in the first half. He’s through three innings, still a scoreless game.

UPDATE, 2:41 p.m.: Make that through four, still a scoreless game. Colon just got through Markakis, Jones and Guerrero in order.

UPDATE, 3:13 p.m.: Colon is still cruising, but the Yankees lineup has four hits and no runs heading into the top of the seventh.

UPDATE, 3:28 p.m.: One run on two hits in the bottom of the seventh. The Orioles have a 1-0 lead, and the Yankees have two innings to get to this Baltimore bullpen.

UPDATE, 3:30 p.m.: Here’s Martin to pinch hit for Cervelli in the eighth. Need to get something going here, and Martin could tie this thing with one swing.

UPDATE, 3:39 p.m.: Colon back out for the bottom of the eighth. The Yankees have Granderson, Teixeira and Rodriguez to try to tie or win in the ninth

UPDATE, 3:58 p.m.: On the verge of escaping trouble, Colon gave up an RBI single before Boone Logan got the final out of the eighth. It’s now 2-0 heading into the ninth.

  2. Vineyard Yankee August 28th, 2011 at 1:33 pm

Time to teach Buck and friends a lesson. Go Yankees ! ! ! !

  3. West Coast Yankee Fan August 28th, 2011 at 1:34 pm

Let’s go boys, put a whupping on these last place clowns.

  4. Salliedogs7 August 28th, 2011 at 1:37 pm

    Go Colon. Go Yanks.

  5. GoldGlove9486 August 28th, 2011 at 1:41 pm

Didn’t we put up 12 in first inning against this guy?

  6. West Coast Yankee Fan August 28th, 2011 at 1:42 pm

Did Tex really do that? Going the other way? What a novel concept even right handed.

  7. Jacob Ruppert August 28th, 2011 at 1:42 pm

There is the popup. WCYF, I think Tex’s charity too is a great thing, but I would rather have him perform on the field than perform charities off the field. He is OPSing at .850. Terrible

  8. Vineyard Yankee August 28th, 2011 at 1:44 pm

His charity can wait till the off season.

  9. Jacob Ruppert August 28th, 2011 at 1:46 pm

What makes the .850 OPS worse is that he has 35 homers

  10. West Coast Yankee Fan August 28th, 2011 at 1:46 pm

Many players do charitable work. I don’t think the two are connected in any way. Look at Granderson and D-Rob.

  11. GoldGlove9486 August 28th, 2011 at 1:46 pm

Please win two today. Hate the fact that Boston has four more victories. And Burnett’s pitching in Boston.

  12. m August 28th, 2011 at 1:49 pm

    got a break there

  13. West Coast Yankee Fan August 28th, 2011 at 1:50 pm

    Nice inning.

  14. m August 28th, 2011 at 1:51 pm

Of course one has nothing to do with the other. People just trying to be creative with their complaints.

  15. MG August 28th, 2011 at 1:51 pm

Colon is throwing the ball well today-he’s keeping the ball down except when the glove is up like on the K of Markakis.

Burnett could take a lesson from Bartolo-if you miss, miss with the ball down, you have a chance to get a out that way.

  16. GoldGlove9486 August 28th, 2011 at 1:52 pm

Man, Tampa Bay doesn’t lose much either.

  17. Vineyard Yankee August 28th, 2011 at 1:53 pm

    Yawn……………..

  18. West Coast Yankee Fan August 28th, 2011 at 1:53 pm

Come on Cano take this guy out.

  19. West Coast Yankee Fan August 28th, 2011 at 1:54 pm

VY fresh crab for everyone at LoHud?

  20. MG August 28th, 2011 at 1:55 pm

Jim Palmer has already made the point that Hirschbeck, the home plate umpire, has a very wide strike zone.

the batters know it as well and it’s probably a big advantage to the Yankees in this game because they have more plate discipline and Colon has much better command than Britton and will be able to expand the zone at will.

  21. Vineyard Yankee August 28th, 2011 at 1:56 pm

Negative…………….maybe for Mick and Jake and a couple of others.

  22. GoldGlove9486 August 28th, 2011 at 1:57 pm

The Orioles announcers just never stop complaining and hating about the Yankees. Makes me sick.

  23. Vineyard Yankee August 28th, 2011 at 1:57 pm

    WCYF:

There is nothing like fresh seafood right out of the water straight to the grill / table.

  24. m August 28th, 2011 at 1:58 pm

That one was actually a strike. Nice pitch.

  25. GoldGlove9486 August 28th, 2011 at 2:02 pm

Can anyone believe what Showalter’s problem is????

  26. m August 28th, 2011 at 2:03 pm

    Gold Glove,

Palmer is easy on the ears (and eyes), but I couldn’t stand his partner so I switched to Kay & Singleton.

Palmer is usually respectful of the Yankees, so hopefully it’s the partner who’s doing all the whining.

  27. mick August 28th, 2011 at 2:05 pm

Looks like aj is the low man on the totem pole.
I love colon and freddy then nova, cca hughes.
aj goes last on thurs in boston
    FOR HIS LIFE…

  28. m August 28th, 2011 at 2:05 pm

    Second break of the day.

  29. MG August 28th, 2011 at 2:06 pm

Jim Palmer is as good as it gets for in-game baseball analysis, at the same level as Jim Kaat.

You can really learn something listening to him, it’s not often a Hall of Famer is able to communicate at the highest level.

  30. Niblick August 28th, 2011 at 2:06 pm

    Andruw is an awful outfielder.

  31. MG August 28th, 2011 at 2:08 pm

    10+ Gold Gloves say otherwise…

  32. tomingeorgia August 28th, 2011 at 2:08 pm

Colon is pounding the mitt, wherever cervelli puts it.

  33. m August 28th, 2011 at 2:08 pm

An efficient and effective Colon would greatly contribute to the cause on DH Sunday.

  34. MG August 28th, 2011 at 2:10 pm

    ———————
and Hirschbeck is letting him pitch the way Maddux, Glavine and Smoltz used to do pre-Questec-expand the zone at will.

  35. West Coast Yankee Fan August 28th, 2011 at 2:10 pm

The Sux aren’t second in the league in BB and OBP for nothing. They are going to sit fastball and wait for AJ to make mistakes over the plate which we all know he will because his command is so awful. They know he can’t throw his breaking ball or change for strikes; they aren’t going to swing at them.

Of course, I have now pretty much guaranteed he will throw a two-hitter.

  36. Tar August 28th, 2011 at 2:10 pm

    MG

The only issue I have with him is he lets his obvious Orioles bias cloud his commentary. Anything close, the Orioles were robbed.

Even Kay I think is better at calling it like he sees it.

  37. GoldGlove9486 August 28th, 2011 at 2:11 pm

Jim Palmer did start Friday’s broadcast pointing out that it was fitting that the Orioles were playing the Yankees, because Mike Flanagan had to “deal with” their $200 million payroll. Sick of the Orioles and their announcers. I hope they finish in last place every year for the rest of my life.

  38. Niblick August 28th, 2011 at 2:12 pm

MG: I’m talking today, not yesterday. Brooks Robinson was a gold glover today, but I wouldn’t want him playing third today.

  39. MG August 28th, 2011 at 2:14 pm

crap, that hit Jeter right on the kneecap…

  40. West Coast Yankee Fan August 28th, 2011 at 2:17 pm

    Indecision. Poor base running.

  41. Tar August 28th, 2011 at 2:18 pm

Not a good read by Cervelli.

  42. Niblick August 28th, 2011 at 2:19 pm

    Cervy owes Derek a hit.

  43. MG August 28th, 2011 at 2:19 pm

anyone who can criticize a baserunner for stopping halfway on a ball that is short hopped by an outfielder and could have been caught obviously has never played the game at even a Little League level.

  44. GoldGlove9486 August 28th, 2011 at 2:19 pm

Offense has been in a terrible funk for the last week. Even the final win in Minnesota was because of solo homers and leaving a ton of runners on base.

  45. Northy August 28th, 2011 at 2:20 pm

Great defensive play by Cervelli – taking a hit away from his Captain…

  46. Vineyard Yankee August 28th, 2011 at 2:21 pm

    Niblick August 28th, 2011 at 2:06 pm

    Andruw is an awful outfielder.

    ===========

Hanging on for a paycheck is about it. He ‘was’ a 10 time GG, past tense.

anyone who can criticize a baserunner for stopping halfway on a ball that is short hopped by an outfielder and could have been caught obviously has never played the game at even a Little League level.
    ——————-
disagree…cervelli was out either way, he should have kept running, he was doubled at 1st…singy is right.

  48. MG August 28th, 2011 at 2:24 pm

if Cervelli stopped short of halfway or started back to 1st you could criticize him-he did neither. He went halfway and had to wait to see if Markakis would catch it. The O’s replay had a view from the 3rd base side of home plate and showed it.

By the time to ball hit the ground and Markakis made a clean pick he had a short throw to 2nd to get the force.

I’m not a big Cervelli fan but can’t knock him for that play.

  49. randy l. August 28th, 2011 at 2:25 pm

    mg-

that was definitely a weird play for cervelli, but he likely would have been out either at first or second by where he was playing it in no man’s land.

can’t say it was a bad play, but on the other hand, a really good base runner might have read the ball flight better and edged closer to second base.

    hard to say though.

  50. Vineyard Yankee August 28th, 2011 at 2:25 pm

    Yawn……………………….

  51. MG August 28th, 2011 at 2:27 pm

I can see the point that he might have been out at 1st also but Markakis was running towards 2nd and would have had to turn completely around and throw to 1st, it would have been a tough play for him.

Either way, it’s a tough play and difficult to criticize a catcher for not being as good a base runner as a middle infielder or outfielder.

  52. muddyduck August 28th, 2011 at 2:27 pm

Love that pitch. A thing of beauty!

  53. Tar August 28th, 2011 at 2:28 pm

    Randy

How’s the weather? Are you up on the roof? :D

  54. m August 28th, 2011 at 2:29 pm

Hard to say on that play. It really came down to the possibility of 1 out or 2. Singleton came to that conclusion right after he said that as a baserunner you want to be positive. If he hadn’t gone back and it was caught it’s a double play.

He may have been born with more speed or executed better, but you can’t blame Cervelli too much.

  55. tomingeorgia August 28th, 2011 at 2:30 pm

Let’s put it this way: The O’s right fielder had Cervelli hung out to dry, either way.

  56. GreenBeret7 August 28th, 2011 at 2:30 pm

    randy l. August 28th, 2011 at 2:25 pm

    ————————————————————————————————————————-

cervelli takes a lot of grief for a lot of things, mostly on defense and mostly well-deserved, but can’t really blame him a lot on that. I blame Jeter for not hitting it over the fence.

Imagine the whines if he had been doubled off of first base.

  57. MG August 28th, 2011 at 2:32 pm

again, Cervelli didn’t turn back towards 1st, he simply stopped halfway.

Markakis had to make a perfect play to short hop the ball, if he doesn’t come up with it cleanly then he doesn’t get Cervelli.

boy, Britton is really dealing out there today…

  58. Tar August 28th, 2011 at 2:35 pm

I just dont think he got a good read on the ball. Not really blaming his base running. If you don’t get a good read, it’s hard to make a good descion.

  59. randy l. August 28th, 2011 at 2:36 pm

“How’s the weather? Are you up on the roof?”

    tar-

it’s not blowing hard enough here on cape cod to make it worth climbing out on the roof to watch the storm.

… actually now that i think about it, i am getting a bit of cabin fever. i’ll bet my wifi is pretty good up there for watching the yankee game.

  60. GreenBeret7 August 28th, 2011 at 2:37 pm

Not often that Cano looks bad against any pitcher, including left handers, but, not looking good right now. He was 2-4 at game time.

  61. Tar August 28th, 2011 at 2:39 pm

    Randy

    Nooooo. I was just kidding. :D .

How about the tourists did the storm scare everybody away. Or was it starting to slow down anyway.

  62. MG August 28th, 2011 at 2:40 pm

Tar, you have a good point about the read, I just don’t expect a backup catcher to have great base running instincts-Martin is the exception to the rule.

GB, Britton has plus stuff, he usually doesn’t locate well-so far today he’s hitting his spots and with the big strikezone it makes it tough to work deep into counts consistently.

  63. Yankee Trader August 28th, 2011 at 2:43 pm

Up on the roof (up on the roof).

    Tar-

Price is really dealing- 12 strikeouts in 5 innings 5-0 Rays over Morrow and Blue Jays

  64. randy l. August 28th, 2011 at 2:44 pm

“Either way, it’s a tough play and difficult to criticize a catcher for not being as good a base runner as a middle infielder or outfielder.”

    mg-

having good baseball instincts has nothing to do with the position you play or how fast you run. some slow runners are really good base runners.

in cervelli’s defense, a heads up base runner would go over in his mind what to do in various scenarios. he would know the strength of the outfielder’s arms, how the pitcher is pitching the hitter, where the first baseman is playing etc, but it doesn’t cross your mind to think what you should do if the ball bloops in front of an outfielder like that.

i do think a really good base runner would have read the ball flight better because the ball flight was right in front of cervelli . again ,it would have been a plus play had he read it correctly.

  65. Tar August 28th, 2011 at 2:45 pm

    **********

Breaking News! Ken Singleton never played baseball above the Little League level.

  67. MG August 28th, 2011 at 2:47 pm

maybe the Yankees should sign Andruw Jones’ mother as an assistant batting coach-Jones has been raking since she watched some video and called hiim…

  68. randy l. August 28th, 2011 at 2:48 pm

“How about the tourists did the storm scare everybody away”

a bunch of stinking cowards i tell you.

real tourists would have stayed and contributed to my winter golf fund in florida.

  69. tomingeorgia August 28th, 2011 at 2:49 pm

re: Jones’s base hit. I don’t think anything ever felt better for me when I was playing than a line single up the middle.

  70. Betsy August 28th, 2011 at 2:49 pm

Nice that Colon is looking better (I would still give him a bit of a break though) – regardless of the offense, it’s all about the pitching.

  71. Tar August 28th, 2011 at 2:50 pm

‘a bunch of stinking cowards i tell you.”

Well you are in NE. :D

    No offense Maine

  72. MG August 28th, 2011 at 2:52 pm

they should let Hirschbeck call balls and strikes for every Yankees-Sox game, they would not take 4 hours to play with his strike zone.

  73. Tar August 28th, 2011 at 2:53 pm

I know he had plenty of time, but did you see how Adams handled that DP transfer throw?

Now think of Robbie. Man I love how he turns two.

  74. pkyankfan69 August 28th, 2011 at 2:53 pm

Seems like the Yanks did a little hurricane partying yesterday. Them all being hungover would explain this extremely flat preformance thus far today. Colon is the only one benefitting as he strictly pounds beers and is benefitting from the immense carb-load.

  75. stuart a August 28th, 2011 at 2:53 pm

boom or bust offense on vacation today.

they need these 3 games.. bury tampa and the angels now.

  76. Dill Pickler August 28th, 2011 at 3:01 pm

Will someone tell our $200 million lineup that it’s actually not against the rules to get a hit before the 6th inning? Crikey! Way too often this year….

  77. m August 28th, 2011 at 3:05 pm

this guy is barely at a 60-40 strike ball count, and we have done nothing. hopefully that will turn around soon.

  78. m August 28th, 2011 at 3:06 pm

    bah ha ha.

Smoltzie is such a NL homer.

“The NL is down a bit this year, but I think whoever comes out of it has a good chance to beat the AL.”

  79. MG August 28th, 2011 at 3:07 pm

Britton’s getting a little tired out there, maybe Arod can do something with a mistake here…

  80. Captain Clutch August 28th, 2011 at 3:11 pm

    Arod looks really rusty

  81. m August 28th, 2011 at 3:13 pm

Colon is player of the game so far.

  82. theREALkevin August 28th, 2011 at 3:13 pm

one run could easily win this game. let’s scratch something across here.

  83. Tar August 28th, 2011 at 3:14 pm

Britton has to be done. Tip your hat, he did a great job.

Meanwhile Colon is cruising at 68 pitches.

    Should be –advantage Yankees

  84. Tar August 28th, 2011 at 3:16 pm

Wow 110 pitches and he comes out to start the 7th.

  85. MG August 28th, 2011 at 3:17 pm

Britton’s done a great job out there, he’s throwing the way he did earlier in the year when he was a Rookie of the Year candidate.

  86. tomingeorgia August 28th, 2011 at 3:17 pm

Colon is doing his job. Now we’re into the O’s pen. Let’s get it done.

  87. theREALkevin August 28th, 2011 at 3:18 pm

really no reason to push a young pitcher like this when your team is going nowhere this season. Buck’s pride getting in the way, really wants to beat the Yanks even though the game is meaningless for the Orioles.

  88. tomingeorgia August 28th, 2011 at 3:18 pm

Oops, we’re not into the O’s pen, yet!

  89. West Coast Yankee Fan August 28th, 2011 at 3:18 pm

In his last ten games Britton was 2-6 with a 7.11 ERA.

  90. stuart a August 28th, 2011 at 3:20 pm

4 and 3 in last seven against minny, oakland, and baltimore…

    offense on a preridoic vacation…..

  91. m August 28th, 2011 at 3:20 pm

Colon has pitched so well. Hope this doesn’t come down to a Yankee mistake.

  92. theREALkevin August 28th, 2011 at 3:21 pm

Yankees should undoubtedly have at least a run or two, but you have to be impressed with Britton. guy has a lot of potential. if harnessed, reminds me of Lester a little bit. lefty, good cutter, not afraid to throw inside. he should be one to watch going forward.

  93. Dill Pickler August 28th, 2011 at 3:21 pm

This is officially another pathetic non-appearance by our boom or bust offense.

  94. West Coast Yankee Fan August 28th, 2011 at 3:22 pm

The Yankees are perfect today with RISP. 0 – 0

  95. Captain Clutch August 28th, 2011 at 3:22 pm

Britton threw the ball well but the offense was bad in the last game against the Twins and 2 games against the A’s. So they need to get out of their mini slump and pick it up.

  96. Betsy August 28th, 2011 at 3:24 pm

They need to be beating these teams………..but the biggest news is Colon’s performance, granted it’s against the O’s.

  97. Captain Clutch August 28th, 2011 at 3:25 pm

Markakis knew they were coming inside and he was waiting for it. You can’t blame Colon though the offense has been awful.

  98. MG August 28th, 2011 at 3:25 pm

it’s always the Yankees fault on LoHud, some things never change…

  99. Betsy August 28th, 2011 at 3:26 pm

No, Colon has done his level best……..just not a good game from the offense.

  100. Captain Clutch August 28th, 2011 at 3:28 pm

It was funny I just was thinking they should walk Vlad with 1st base open. He always gets big hits against the Yanks with risp.

  101. tomingeorgia August 28th, 2011 at 3:30 pm

If Vlad can hit the other way, shouldn’t Teix be able to do it?

  102. ralphfl August 28th, 2011 at 3:31 pm

WITH HOW GOOD THE RAYS are playing the yankees need to worry about just making it to the post season.no runs vs balt? that is sad sad sad

  103. Tar August 28th, 2011 at 3:31 pm

“It was funny I just was thinking they should walk Vlad with 1st base open”

It looked like he hit a pitch out. the ball was a foot outside.

  104. Betsy August 28th, 2011 at 3:32 pm

Can we wait until the Rays are within a few games of the Yankees before freaking out?

  105. WyoYankee August 28th, 2011 at 3:32 pm

Its always tough to teach Buck and O’s a lesson when you can’t score runs.
Maybe O’s will sweep Yanks-how that for a Buck lesson.

  106. MG August 28th, 2011 at 3:33 pm

Betsy, the local Tampa media gave up on the Rays about 3 weeks ago, if they make any kind of run it will shock everyone in the area.

  107. Captain Clutch August 28th, 2011 at 3:33 pm

I wonder if the bats are slumping or against bad teams like the A’s and O’s the Yanks don’t have the same energy like they do against the good play off type teams. We have seen that from them the last couple of years.

  108. Tar August 28th, 2011 at 3:33 pm

Why not bat Gardner here for the lefty righty match-up? Going for the HR?

  109. ralphfl August 28th, 2011 at 3:34 pm

Betsy after today they will be within 6 maybe 5 1/2 not close enough? it was 9 a few days ago.

  110. Chambliss August 28th, 2011 at 3:34 pm

Nice job by Britton, but poor plate approach by the Yankees. With a high pitch count going into the 7th, they were up there swinging early in the count. It appears as if these guys lived it up in the hotel last night. If the keep screwing around with bad teams, they are going tom wake upmin a fight with tampa for the wildcard.

  111. ralphfl August 28th, 2011 at 3:35 pm

Chambliss ummmm after today they will be in a fight with them and the LAA’s how things change when you suck.

  112. Betsy August 28th, 2011 at 3:36 pm

MG, I give the Rays a ton of credit – and it’s possible they make serious dent in the Yankees’ lead. However, until the lead is whittled to, say, 4 games or so, why even worry about them? The Yankees have their own concerns – and if they are good enough, they’ll make the playoffs. If they aren’t, they won’t…….freaking out about it won’t help anything.

Ralph, if you want to get yourself into a lather, that’s ok by me – I don’t care.

  113. Niblick August 28th, 2011 at 3:36 pm

Great hitting today. A 2 1/2 game deficit is not good.

  114. Betsy August 28th, 2011 at 3:37 pm

The bats are inconsisent – period. They go in and out of hot streaks and funks like people turn lights on and off. Nothing the offense does surprises me, good or bad.

  115. Betsy August 28th, 2011 at 3:38 pm

    Inconsistent

  116. West Coast Yankee Fan August 28th, 2011 at 3:38 pm

Ralph need a bar of soap?

  117. Tar August 28th, 2011 at 3:38 pm

They have 3 outs left– and at this point are only losing by one. The game is not over.

  118. theREALkevin August 28th, 2011 at 3:38 pm

on the verge of losing 4 out of 5 to the A’s and Orioles. and they haven’t gotten a runner to 2nd base today.

they’re much better than this. gotta wake up.

  119. MG August 28th, 2011 at 3:39 pm

Betsy, I’m not worried about the Rays, the Angels, the Rangers or the Sox.

The Yankee will be in the post-season and whoever is hot then usually wins it all.

  120. fantasygame101 August 28th, 2011 at 3:40 pm

the yankees believe they are in the playoffs already. That is why they are pitching aj against the red sox.

  121. stuart a August 28th, 2011 at 3:40 pm

shocking martin with a grounder to the left side. that never happens.

    no one doing anything offensivel.

lucky we have clutch tex up next inning. what is the chance he pops out on the infield? 50%…

no one doing anything. the nunez fly out to deep center and the jeter almost hit that would have given them 1st and 2nd with no outs is it. zero chances generated…….

  122. Captain Clutch August 28th, 2011 at 3:41 pm

That is Granderson’s ball Cano has to get out of the way

  123. NYY fan in NH August 28th, 2011 at 3:41 pm

Don’t look now folks, but the Yanks are starting to slide back a bit in the AL East. Don’t want to hear about the Wild Card crap. Inconsistency will not win you WS championships.

  124. Betsy August 28th, 2011 at 3:41 pm

MG, I’m not worried about the Rays because they are too far away right now. I’m not worried about the Sox because if we make the playoffs, we may not even face them. There’s no reason to worry about any other team in the playoffs because good teams are supposed to beat other good teams. If the Yankees aren’t good enough, then so be it; if they are, they are. I don’t see them going deep into the playoffs because I don’t have much faith in the pitching and the offense has generally been ice cold in the playoffs, but I’m not spending any time fretting about it.

  125. stuart a August 28th, 2011 at 3:42 pm

they need gardners energy but lately offensively he has been putrid. really really bad…

the ups and downs and fristration of baseball we are watching it.. it is not pretty….

  127. Captain Clutch August 28th, 2011 at 3:42 pm

    *********

This is yet another example of why Girardi at times looks like the most incompetent manager in baseball and why some believe he doesn’t try hard enough to win the division. There is no logical explanation for throwing Burnett against the Sux at Fenway. None. It’s an indefensible position.

  129. Niblick August 28th, 2011 at 3:43 pm

    Andruw jones is truly awful.

  130. stuart a August 28th, 2011 at 3:43 pm

if the yanks think they are winning the WS woth aj burnett on the roster they are dreaming. the thought that aj burnett is pitching on weds is staggering. zach britton who was sent down twice this year and the yanks destroyed in less then 1 inning a while ago has a over 1 run a game better era then the guy with the great stuff……………

  131. fantasygame101 August 28th, 2011 at 3:44 pm

AJ has great stuff though. lol

  132. Ace August 28th, 2011 at 3:45 pm

  134. Captain Clutch August 28th, 2011 at 3:45 pm

I am surprised that Colon is pitching the 8th inning. Girardi keep talking about Colon’s innings so why not let someone else pitch this inning?

  135. stuart a August 28th, 2011 at 3:46 pm

    horrible…

Clutch, I think his pitch count is pretty low

  138. fantasygame101 August 28th, 2011 at 3:46 pm

let us keep the playoff race interesting. Yes ratings will not suffer.

  139. Captain Clutch August 28th, 2011 at 3:47 pm

Colon is tired and once again Girardi leaves the starting pitcher out there too long. This happens at least 3 times a week so I shouldn’t be surprised.

  140. stuart a August 28th, 2011 at 3:47 pm

if burnett doesw pitch on weds. i hope he gets lit up.

if I never see him pitch again after that game it would be great news.

and the yanks say they have no option what a joke……

  141. Betsy August 28th, 2011 at 3:47 pm

  148. Bayareanyy August 28th, 2011 at 3:50 pm

The Rays are hot and are playing well.

This will be a critical 5 days of baseball for the team. They could let the Rays get very close while losing touch with the Red Sox.

They Yankees lack of ability to comeback in the 8th or 9th is very worrisome.

  166. Captain Clutch August 28th, 2011 at 3:55 pm

That was an awful pitch but that’s what you get when you leave a guy out to dry like Girardi always does. I don’t know why Girardi always tries to stretch the starting pitcher through an extra inning. He does it all the time and never learns from it when it burns him almost everytime.

  173. tomingeorgia August 28th, 2011 at 3:58 pm

Colon into the 8th, 2 earned runs, what more can you ask of a guy? Now it’s up to the hitters, who haven’t shown up today.

  174. stuart a August 28th, 2011 at 3:59 pm

they naks do not hit homers there offense is often dormant…

gardner has been horrible for about 2 weeks. grandy in another slump.. tex has been bad pretty much all year.

i am wondering how they can keep tex hitting 3rd batting under 250? the rationale is he drive in runs.. how many more would he drive in if he hit 275 ??I bet you a ton more. why not go with jeter, grandy, cano, arod, tex, swisher, etc… hit tex 5th… your 3 hitter has to hit for some avg……

good news tex gets up lefty in the 9th. he will either hit a homer or pop up on an offspeed pitch.\\

  175. West Coast Yankee Fan August 28th, 2011 at 3:59 pm

  179. West Coast Yankee Fan August 28th, 2011 at 4:00 pm

Colon pitched very well, Girardi just shouldn’t have left him in for the 8th. You have a fully rested bullpen in a one run game.

  182. GreenBeret7 August 28th, 2011 at 4:01 pm

Colon’s performance was exactly what the team needed after AJ’s results on Fri. It was excellent!
