Home runs carry Yankees in nightcap

Curtis Granderson’s case for the MVP got even stronger tonight. The Yankees center fielder homered twice in an 8-3 Yankees win in the second game of a Baltimore doubleheader. Granderson now leads the Majors in home runs, runs and RBI. In between his two home runs, the Yankees hit three straight homers in the sixth inning. Robinson Cano, Nick Swisher and Andruw Jones went back-to-back-to-back, the first time the Yankees hit three in a row since 2009. Ivan Nova picked up his 14th win. He’s won seven straight starts, including every start since his return from Triple-A.

    14 wins for Nova!

  2. m August 28th, 2011 at 10:32 pm

    Yay! Nice bounce back win!

  3. TheStraw August 28th, 2011 at 10:32 pm

    Curtis is a class act all the way around.

  4. pft2 August 28th, 2011 at 10:32 pm

    Granderson has my vote for MVP but he has too many HR and RBI to stand a chance.

    at this moment.

    Granderson: .971 OPS
    Gonzalez: .965 OPS
    Ellsbury: .889
    Cano: .869
    Pedroia: .872

    This is what Granderson is now on pace for.

    150 runs, 25 doubles, 12 triples, 47 HR, 132 RBI, 30 SB.

    *********

    That line is breath-taking.

  6. Benny Blanco August 28th, 2011 at 10:34 pm

    14 wins and missed a month in AAA!

  7. Betsy August 28th, 2011 at 10:34 pm

    I don’t think he’ll win, but Granderson should……outside of Mo, he’s my favorite. I knew he’d have a big year this year, but never did I expect this.

  8. StanRules August 28th, 2011 at 10:34 pm

    Can anyone get the David Robertson stat on pitching with the bases loaded this season? How many batters? How many strikeouts?

  9. blake August 28th, 2011 at 10:34 pm

    150 runs! That’s pretty rare.

  10. Wang IS Taiwan August 28th, 2011 at 10:35 pm

    Remember when D-Rob was somehow in Girardi’s doghouse and we kept asking every day on this blog WHY HE WASN’T PITCHING!?

    D-Rob – now there’s an easy guy to root for!

  11. Barry August 28th, 2011 at 10:38 pm

    Bautista should be included, and near the top for MVP.

  12. blake August 28th, 2011 at 10:40 pm

    By my count….there have been 46 guys that have scored 150 runs in a season…..and only 1 since 1949 when Ted Williams did it. (Bagwell scored 152 in 2000).

    Granderson hasn’t done it yet….it’s still a projection but if he is able to score 150 runs he’ll be only the 2nd player to do it in over 60 years. Most that have done it were before 1930 and many were in the 1800′s.

  13. blake August 28th, 2011 at 10:41 pm

    Bautista is hitting .268 in the 2nd half and only has 6 homers since the ASB

  14. Captain Clutch August 28th, 2011 at 10:42 pm

    This is not what the Yanks want going into Fenway….

    BryanHoch A-Rod wasn’t available tonight, probably not tomorrow either. Girardi says thumb is bothering him again

    BryanHoch Jeter had x rays on top of kneecap, came back negative, may not be available tomorrow.

  15. Trigeminal Neuralgia Yank August 28th, 2011 at 10:43 pm

    Wow, had no idea what rare air Grandy could be in w 150 runs

  16. theREALkevin August 28th, 2011 at 10:44 pm

    stan, after tonight’s outing, hitters against Robertson with the bases loaded:

    1-16, 0 BBs, 13 K’s

  17. 4 NYY August 28th, 2011 at 10:45 pm

    Grandy has done more with approximately 50 fewer hits than A-gone.

  18. Betsy August 28th, 2011 at 10:46 pm

    Clutch, no it’s not……. Fenway or no, we need to get him healthy.

  19. GreenBeret7 August 28th, 2011 at 10:46 pm

    Nova’s doing his Guidry/Clemens impression. He’s won his last 10 starts. That’s impressive. Just by bad luck or bad pitching, he should have had a loss or no decision during that stretch.

  20. blake August 28th, 2011 at 10:47 pm

    Trigeminal,

    yup….it would be special for sure. Interesting screen name….

  21. GreenBeret7 August 28th, 2011 at 10:48 pm

    My error. 9 consecutive wins in 10 starts

  22. StanRules August 28th, 2011 at 10:49 pm

    Thanks, Kevin. 13 Ks out of 16 batters. WOW!

  23. 4 NYY August 28th, 2011 at 10:49 pm

    Trivia query : Who holds record for sac. flies in a season in A.L. ? There is a 2 way tie for it now.

    Something we could have used several times this year, for sure.

  24. Wang IS Taiwan August 28th, 2011 at 10:51 pm

    Surprising Jete never got to 150 runs with all the times he’s been on base with big bats behind him.

    That’s some record!

  25. GreenBeret7 August 28th, 2011 at 10:51 pm

    So, Blake, do you think Girardi jugles the rotation a bit to get Nova his 6 September starts?

  26. Wang IS Taiwan August 28th, 2011 at 10:52 pm

    GreenBeret7 August 28th, 2011 at 10:48 pm
    My error. 9 consecutive wins in 10 starts

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Still amazing.
  27. GreenBeret7 August 28th, 2011 at 10:52 pm
    ***juggles***
  28. blake August 28th, 2011 at 10:53 pm
    GB7,
    I would get him as many as you can. His innings are fine……I don’t know if they’ll do that or not. They have to decide what to do with this 6 man stuff first.
  29. blake August 28th, 2011 at 10:54 pm
    if Nova gets 6 starts and just wins half of them that’s 17 wins for the kid. Hughes had 17 starter wins last year.
  30. Bret The Hitman August 28th, 2011 at 10:55 pm
    Nova is on pace for 17 wins. It’s special for a rookie pitcher to do that in the biggest pressure cooker
    in MLB.
    The Yankees have a very solid mid-rotation guy for many years to come. He will give them innings, keep them in nearly every game he pitches and gobble up wins.
  31. TheStraw August 28th, 2011 at 10:55 pm
    Team is 17-5 in games started by Nova this year.
  32. blake August 28th, 2011 at 10:56 pm
    night guys….hope Jeter and Arod heal up quickly. They need to get Alex healthy so he can get his timing in September and be ready for the playoffs.
  33. GreenBeret7 August 28th, 2011 at 10:56 pm
    Nova’s next goal is to finish 8 innings and start the 9th inning. Start picking up some complete games next year. The kids are growing up.
  34. 4 NYY August 28th, 2011 at 10:57 pm
    Nova, unlike a “nameless” SP, has the ability to hang tough and come back strong after a rough start. Good mix of pitches has made him so much better.
  35. 4 NYY August 28th, 2011 at 10:57 pm
    Tampa is creeping up
  36. GreenBeret7 August 28th, 2011 at 10:59 pm
    Blake, if not for the double headers that piled up, kind of hard to change it now. I would guess by next week, it’ll be back to 5 man rotations until the 8th.
  37. DaSaint007 August 28th, 2011 at 11:02 pm
    Do you do CC, Hughes, and Nova 1,2,3 in the playoffs, or do you put the vets Garcia and/or Colon in there?
  38. West Coast Yankee Fan August 28th, 2011 at 11:04 pm
    Two players have won the AL MVP with a BA under .300 in the last 40 years. The guys were A-Rod and Reggie with .298 and .293 respectively.
    Will that hurt Granderson?
  39. Betsy August 28th, 2011 at 11:06 pm
    Of course you put Colon and Garcia in the post-season rotation……….
  40. GreenBeret7 August 28th, 2011 at 11:10 pm
    Good evening, Simon. Nice to see you around.
    I gotta believe that Colon gets the #2 spot in the playoffs right now with Nova, Garcia and hughes in that order, unless something changes in how the six pitchers are doing.
  41. DaSaint007 August 28th, 2011 at 11:18 pm
    hi GB. Thanks for answering my question. I agree that Colon may get the #2 spot, the rest being variable. just can’t trust AJ anymore. The Vernon Wells trade by Toronto shows me that any contract can be traded, so we’ll see if AJ is still around next season. My guess is he stays.
  42. Niblick August 28th, 2011 at 11:25 pm
    Don’t worry – it’ll be AJ in game 2. Binder Joe’s rationale: AJ has done it for us before, Nova, Colon and Garcia haven’t.
  43. pft2 August 29th, 2011 at 1:33 am
    @Wang “Surprising Jete never got to 150 runs with all the times he’s been on base with big bats behind him.”
    Jete never hit enough HR. 38 of Grandersons RS are self driven in with HR’s.
