Freddy returns to win series finale

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Aug 29, 2011 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

The Yankees are going to Boston short-handed, but they’re going with some momentum after Freddy Garcia pitched them to a 3-2 win tonight in Baltimore. The Yankees salvaged a series split and have now won two straight heading into this week’s Red Sox series. Garcia made his first big league start since August 7 and gave up one run and two hits through six strong innings. Nick Swisher hit a two-run home run, and Curtis Granderson scored on a first-inning double to give the Yankees pitching staff all the support it needed. Despite a solo homer off Dave Robertson, the Yankees usual late-inning trio kept the lead intact and locked up the win.

If that was a cutter it didn’t cut. Looked like a 4-seamer to me. Whatever it was it worked. :)

  9. MG August 29th, 2011 at 9:45 pm

great job by Freddy, he can pitch on my team any day.

SJ had him pegged right in spring training, the guy can just flat out pitch.

I know most of you hate the O’s and Showalter but give them some credit, they are playing better baseball and played the Yankees tough this weekend.

  10. J. Alfred Prufrock August 29th, 2011 at 9:46 pm

Not a dominating but not a bad outing for Dellin, Yankfem, in terms of the numbers. Seems they could let the kid throw more than 88 pitches, though. 8Ks nice.

  35. yankeefeminista August 29th, 2011 at 9:59 pm

luis, Montero’s DH’ing; he caught the first game, 0-3 in this one.

  36. GreenBeret7 August 29th, 2011 at 9:59 pm

Betances finished with 7 innings, 2 hits, 2 runs, 4 walks, 8 strikeouts, 1 Homer allowed. 104 pitches, 60 strikes, 1 groundout, 7 flyouts. He’ll get the loss and it will end the chances for scranton this year.

  65. Yogi Mantle August 29th, 2011 at 10:09 pm

Tar and Mick, I did see AJ’s face when he got booed off the field. I know the RS have a strong showing at Camden Yards but I don’t think its quite as much as the Yankees usually get there. Still, being a home team that has to really get on the players.

The Rays get similar treatment at home, though I think that has improved a little since their run these past couple of years.

When a team stinks up the joint as long as both of those teams have (and the O’s are still doing) the fans just aren’t going to be there. Even the Rays are having a hard time bringing in regular fans to their home games and they are a good team now.

It has to deflate a player.

Yanks have 4 starters with an ERA below 4. I thought Bartolo coming out and trowing the game he threw was as important as any win they earned this weekend.

Freddy’s been pitching like he did tonight pretty consistently all season. Both those guys may have short Yankee careers but they’ll have set the bar pretty high on terms of cheap veteran pick-ups. 2 virtual jackpots.

I was at a game in Memorial Stadium when Mantle, who came in as a pinch hitter having returned from the DL, got a loud ovation, then hit a homer and got a standing ovation from the crowd-both Oriole and Yankee fans. he wrote about that game, saying he had tears in his eyes fom the warm reception upon his return.

Garcia does what he does and keeps everyone off balance and gives the Yanks yet another quality outing….not much left to say about this guy. He’s been terrific all year.

    YogiMantle-

I was at a game in Memorial Stadium when Mantle, who came in as a pinch hitter having returned from the DL, got a loud ovation, then hit a homer and got a standing ovation from the crowd-both Oriole and Yankee fans. he wrote about that game, saying he had tears in his eyes fom the warm reception upon his return.

    ————————————————————————————————————————-

Hank bauer said that the night before, he had Mantle spend the night at his house and they partied hard. Mantle was sleeping when Houk called on Mantle (not knowing he was activated). Bauer told his pitcher to throw nothing but hardstuff because Mantle wasn’t feeling well and he’d never see it.

As he’s rounding third, Bauer’s staring at Mantle and shaking his head. Mantle laughed at Bauer and told him to go crap in his hat. Asked about the homer after the game, Mantle said hitting it was the easy part…..getting around the bases was the hard part.

I guess I could be misreading the dynamic between Derek & Kim. Sometimes he just seems to me to be annoyed. Or maybe bemused is a good word.

Anyhoo, I guess it doesn’t really matter. It’s just an observation, and I was curious about the thoughts of others.

  112. yankeefeminista August 29th, 2011 at 10:26 pm

blake, thing I like about the Betances outing is he went 104 pitches in 7 innings. Huge. 2nd time in 3 games he has kept pitch count down and in bump up to AAA no less. Darn ticked I didn’t get to see it and the Manny gem.

Got to see a lot of his games on TV. Even before the CBS years, they were on TV almost every week on CBS on Game Of The Week with Dizzy Dean and PeeWee Reese. Also a lot of games in Chicago, Detroit and Cleveland. The bat speed and the sound was something that I haven’t seen or heard since. Just different. Ted williams said that during batting practice, he’d be in the clubhouse and could tell when he was hitting. He hit the longest homer I ever saw in Detroit in swptenber og 1960. Over the right center grandstands, across the street and into a lumber yard. amazing, because he really wasn’t that big, except for his arms, back and shoulders.

  170. pft2 August 29th, 2011 at 10:53 pm

Poor roster management by Joe. No excuse for being shorthanded for what may be the most important series of the year. A-Rod should have been sent to the DL and Noesi kept with the team. As for A-Rods thumb being an injury that won’t linger, it’s already been over a week and it is worse than ever. Hand injuries almost always linger for hitters.

CC needs to step up big because Hughes-Beckett and AJ-Lester does not look very promising.

Memo to pitchers, you do not throw Crawford break pitches over the plate, you bounce them in the dirt or throw them off the plate inside. Only thing you need to throw over the plate is FB away . He makes BJ Upton look like Bobby Abreu in terms of strike zone recognition.

Second memo to pitchers, when you throw high and inside to push Oriz off the plate, which you should do often, your next pitch should not be a breaking pitch inside over the plate. FB away or backdoor breaking stuff should do it.

  171. mick August 29th, 2011 at 10:53 pm

they are still updating Irene, this storm never ends.

  172. yankeefeminista August 29th, 2011 at 10:53 pm

    Mason Williams scouting report:

“Mason Williams has lots of tools much like many high draft selections. What makes him quite different is his feel at the plate. Williams shows an ability to extend at-bats and get hits on pitcher’s pitches. Most young hitters are relying on pure mistakes from equally inexperienced pitchers. Williams has success because of remarkable hand-eye coordination and ability to recognize breaking pitches. He has a short, compact swing and consistently stays inside the baseball.

Making contact will not be a long term issue for him. He has true plus speed and it reflects in his style at the plate. He knows how to spin on a mistake but focuses on hitting line drives and keeping the ball on the ground. His routes in the outfield also appear to be a strength. But, this is a young player with a knack at the plate like we see from hitters like Ichiro Suzuki and Derek Jeter. That’s not to say he’s on that level but given his style at the plate and advanced ability against secondary pitches he looks like someone who could hit .300 with fringe-average big league power. He also has a ways to go in his physical development and may get significantly stronger and more refined mechanically as he matures.”

There is no way that the Yanks will break in Montero against the Sox. They always like to bring up their prospects on the road but after the Sox they play the Blue Jays at home. I hope I am wrong but it seems like Montero will only get a taste of the majors to get his feet wet and not a real chance to play. It seems like Girardi doesn’t want to upset the veterans.

    I think I heard Wayne.

    Manville, NJ

  199. mick August 29th, 2011 at 11:13 pm

mick, I didn’t play any pro ball if that is what you are asking.
    ======================
was actually thinking little league or high school.

Pruf, I think playoff games should start around Sept. 6th. so hopefully flood waters won’t be a factor.

  201. mick August 29th, 2011 at 11:14 pm

I only played Little League but developed into a good softball player bc of the love of the sport.

  202. mick August 29th, 2011 at 11:15 pm

    later yankee people…

  203. yankeefeminista August 29th, 2011 at 11:15 pm

    Is Manville near Hillsborough?

  204. yankeefeminista August 29th, 2011 at 11:15 pm

    Later, Mick.

  205. J. Alfred Prufrock August 29th, 2011 at 11:17 pm

    this tripe again.

    Goodnight, Yankee folks. Good win.

It’s about a mile walk from the Ferry so it’s pretty easy to get there from Manhattan.

I don’t know how much it would really affect the Cyclones but these things always come down to the $.

Who knows though? I’m just skeptical because it’s the Mets we are dealing with.

  207. GreenBeret7 August 29th, 2011 at 11:17 pm

Mark Montgomery is now closing for Charleston. 27.1 innings, 18 hits, 13 walks, 49 strikeouts, 14 saves. 2,00 ERA

  208. GreenBeret7 August 29th, 2011 at 11:18 pm

Soriano bombs a solo shot off of Lincecum.

  209. yankeefeminista August 29th, 2011 at 11:21 pm

GB, Nice, haven’t gotten a chance to see him, only Buwara once.

LGY, Yeah, but w/minor leagues seems like you have either a loyal Yankee or Mets following. When I went to see Hughes pitch in Brooklyn, I was surprised at how few Yankee fans showed up. I just don’t think they are the same crowd.

  210. GreenBeret7 August 29th, 2011 at 11:23 pm

YankeeFem, Montgomery will be in Trenton by next summer.

  211. yankeefeminista August 29th, 2011 at 11:23 pm

How’s Lincecum look otherwise? Sure wish I had Extra Innings instead of mlb-tv. Sometimes I just don’t want to watch games on my laptop. Plus I can’t post if I do.

  212. LGY August 29th, 2011 at 11:23 pm

Ah. Of course. I had a sneaking suspicion something was off with Mr Jacob Ruppert.

  213. yankeefeminista August 29th, 2011 at 11:25 pm

GB, next season should be fun. It will be nice to get Marshall also. Life in Trenton just hasn’t been the same since the Killer B’s left. I was also hoping for DePaula at some point, but now I have no idea when or where he will pitch next year.

  214. yankeefeminista August 29th, 2011 at 11:25 pm

LGY, I think it is Colonel Mustard with the Pipe in the Drawing Room. Or something like that.

  215. GreenBeret7 August 29th, 2011 at 11:28 pm

Kincecum had a tough 5th inning as far as pitch counts, but still only 1-0. Apparently, there’s some concern that he hurt himelf in the 4th and is still pitching.

  216. LGY August 29th, 2011 at 11:29 pm

The way I could see it affecting the Cyclones is that people attending a minor league game may be more interested in a AAA game.

In terms of the Mets, why pay an arm and a leg to watch a AAAA team when you can see a AAA for a fraction of the price!

  217. yankeefeminista August 29th, 2011 at 11:29 pm

Why would they let Lincecum continue to pitch?

  218. GreenBeret7 August 29th, 2011 at 11:31 pm

I’m anxious to see how Bryan Mitchell is progressing next year in Charleston. Trenton should be getting Quintana next year, too as the rotation lefty.

  219. yankeefeminista August 29th, 2011 at 11:34 pm

LGY, I guess I think more in terms of people going to minor league games to see their own mlb team’s prospects. Or to attend games based on the territorial imperative of rooting for your local team.

  220. GreenBeret7 August 29th, 2011 at 11:35 pm

YF, just going on what Krucau and kuiper were talking about the possible injury. Said that he threw a pitch and grabbed his side. They aren’t going to win without an offense. Why gamble on that arm?

I’m more thinking of the families who are go to mL games because they are cheap and fun.

Of course the super fans like us on Lohud wouldn’t be caught dead at a Brooklyn Cyclones game unless the SI Yankees were in town! ;)
