Jeter returns to short, Gardner to leadoff
Heard from my old friend Mike Ashmore on the way to the park this afternoon. Ramiro Pena is rehabbing with Double-A Trenton, playing shortstop and leading off. Should be his first real game since having his appendix removed. Seems like a strong and obvious candidate to be added to the big league roster on Thursday.
Brett Gardner LF
Derek Jeter SS
Curtis Granderson CF
Mark Teixeira 1B
Robinson Cano 2B
Nick Swisher RF
Eric Chavez 3B
Jorge Posada DH
Francisco Cervelli C

Pena is a nice guy, but……………….FREE JESUS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
El Nino!!
kate-here you go:
GordonEdes Gordon Edes by AnthonyMcCarron
Ellsbury CF, Scutaro SS, Gonzalez 1B, Pedroia 2B, Ortiz DH, Lowrie 3B, Crawford LF, Saltalamacchia C, McDonald RF, Lackey P.
Thanks Erin
Later guys,
See ya at game time
Erin,
The midget batting clean up??!!!
Yeah Luis, Tito has used him there several times this year. Pretty crazy but that’s what they have been doing from time to time.
needs 1 win to better the wc chance. Needs at least 2 wins for the divison.
would be nice to have our best player out there against our division rival at some point this season. But he has a boo boo on his finga.. so he will promptly return after we lose this series in boston.
I thought we might see Jones in LF tonight considering how bad Gardner is struggling. But I guess the binder says no Jones against righties.
gardner should be in the lineup everyday just based on the fact that you can actually rely on him to play through pain and be ready for action night in and night out. Cant say the same about other people on this team.

His numbers in that spot are insane. I’d leave him there if I were Francona.

_______________
Wasn’t he there for the first three series? ARod is hardly the best player on the Yankees anymore.
Thankfully past stats don’t mean much:
Sux hitting .324/.397/.451/.848 against Sabathia in 2011.
You wonder why Pedroia is hitting cleanup? He’s batting .600 against CC.
luis August 30th, 2011 at 1:55 pm
ron,
what about the B`s, you do`t think they are going to have an impact in the near future??
————————————————————————————————————————-
I think they both will but after cc & nova in 2 years,we have nobody yet.
Of course we will but if hughes can be a number 1-3 pitcher,we are in better shape, obviously.
Don’t forget,we won a ws with
cc
pettitte
hughes
burnett & i forgot who else.
You can bet the house that cashman & girardi were hoping that hughes would be a lot better than he is now.

I think he’s been hitting about .500 as the cleanup hitter. It helps to have guys that don’t strike out and make contact in that spot. I like a singles hitter in the clean up hole just as much as i do a power hitter.
come October you will be changing your tone about Arod. He did single handily launch us to the world series in 2009. And when it comes down to it, I want him up in the big spot to win us a game in the playoffs over anyone else on our team.
West Coast Yankee Fan August 30th, 2011 at 4:05 pm
Based on your current research should I take the over vs CC tonight ? ? Lackey U/O 9.5.
Even money on the Sux and Lackey. 120 / 100 on CC and the Yanks.
Is there a game tonight? Who are we playing?

________
Okay, that’s fine. In 2009, he had a monster playoff run, which skews the other playoff numbers, but you’re correct, he did launch them. It also helped that we had CC. Just sayin. They dont’ win without him.
Lackey has a 6.16 ERA in Fenway and a 7.36 ERA vs the Yankees for 2011.
Ive seen less whining on those awful mtv shows. Are half the posters here pregnant teenagers?
West Coast Yankee Fan August 30th, 2011 at 4:11 pm
Maybe PB can fill you in, she is good with that type of stuff.
West Coast Yankee Fan August 30th, 2011 at 4:13 pm
Lackey could give up 10 all by his lonesome.
To be fair, CC has a 6.17 ERA in Fenway and a 7.29 ERA vs the Sox for 2011.
Howard August 30th, 2011 at 4:13 pm
Nice story about Beckett and your brother. I like hearing stories like that. Thanks for sharing.
To me Arod was more of the reason we made it to the world series then CC
To be fair(er), the Yankees in general have about a 6era against Boston this year.

Could be. Not a bet I would make.
JackCurryYES Quirky stats: Without ARod and Jeter in lineup, Yanks are 7-0 this yr. Jeter is in lineup 2nite. ARod isn’t. In those spots, Yanks are 24-17
I don’t like that line-up. 7,8,9 & 1 are automatic outs.
Earth to LoHud!
A-Rod is 36 years old. He gets injured a lot. His BA, HR, SLG and OPS has dropped for five consecutive years. And we have another five to go.
did i just read that Thursday is AJ Burnett vs. Jon Lester?
They are really going to move forward with that match up and try to convince us they care about winning the division?
YankeesPR Congratulations to @TrentonThunder broadcaster, Jay Burnham, who was named Ballpark Digest’s 2011 Broadcaster of the Year
Ac1,
AJs next start will be the one…..he’s gonna get on that roll and blah blah blah
Being that i bought tickets to the Scranton/Iron Pigs game this morning, I thought for sure that Jesus Montero would be called up to the majors today…
Hope it’s a long game so I can catch the end of it
eboland11 Girardi on ARod for this series: “I wouldn’t be surprised if we didn’t have him”
jnorris427 Josh Norris
Corban Joseph, Rob Segedin, David Phelps, Ronnier Mustelier headed to AFL for #Yankees
————————————————————————————————————————-
NYY have 2 more pitchers to decide for the AFL. Warren and Mitchell should be the two others chosen.
ac1, the Yankees, Girardi, Cashman are all OK with throwing that game away just to give head case AJ another chance to “right the ship”. It’s all a bunch of crap. They must think all of us fans are idiots to believe that THEY believe he can actually help the Yankees with even ONE more game this season. I don’t care if it is against the Royals, the Red Sox or WORSE YET, in a playoff game, AJ is the WORST STARTER on our Roster BY FAR and trotting him out there for HIS BENEFIT is an insult to the fans and the players. Just a complete farce to let him pitch AT BOSTON against Lester…..and a SUPER DUMB move IF they are truly serious about winning the division.
Will it be another sweep — just like two previous times this season?
with=win (sorry)
Jim Bowden pumping up Grandy for MVP
Those Beantown ‘Roids must be all giddy about facing CC again tonight.
blake August 30th, 2011 at 4:54 pm
You been nipping at the ‘Old No. 7′ early ?
Vineyard,
No.seriously ……its still a couple hours before that. He is….Grandy for MVP!
Humor is good ! Grandyman for MVP !
Blake-
Might need to break out the ” white lightnin’ ” for this series.
MTU,
Early Times in reach.
I believe the Yankees ARE serious about winning the division.
I don’t believe they are trotting AJ out there for his benefit, but for the Yankees benefit. There are a number of make up games to be played and the pitching staff needs to be not overworked. If he gets into trouble early, I hope Girardi leaves him out there until his arm falls off, so as not to overuse the BP.
Of course, as a Yankees fan, I sincerely hope AJ pitches a wonderful game.
Tom-
Try and save me some. I might need it.
MTU,
Might need the good.stuff for.Thursday
Kate-
I’m focused on the 2 games before Burnett.
The good thing about Burnett pitching Thursday is that they should have a few reinforcements from Scranton to give them innings in case Burnett falls on his face yet again.
I just knew ARod was going to receive
a cortisone shot. I called that 2 days ago.
The shot is administered and takes several
days to work properly.
MTU
as it should be, but all the talk this afternoon has been about AJ
MTU August 30th, 2011 at 5:18 pm
The real ‘Hard Stuff’ huh ?
Why Is Pedroia an MVP candidate but Cano is never mentioned?
.304 avg, 85 r, 157 h, 35 2b, 23 hr, 95 rbi, 877 ops (Cano)
.308 avg, 84 r, 158 h, 30 2b, 17 hr, 71 rbi, 872 ops (Pedroia)
Other than stolen bases which has not lead to more runs scored, Cano is having a better season, and unlike Pedroia, he doesn’t turn into an average player on the road.
Blake-
Yup. The high test.
For the big celebration or to drown my sorrows.
Either way I’m gonna need some.
Kate I disagree about Burnett.
Yes i hope he throws a 1 hit shut out, but come on now….
Can starting Adam Warren or even bringing Manny or Betances up to pitch on Thursday (September 1) yield worse results than we all feel Burnett will produce?
VY-
Got to have it handy to numb the pain just in case.
The first two games are what they are.
1. CC should win tonight. Unlike in other CC starts, i hope Joe learned his lesson and doesn’t leave CC out there to hang himself in Fenway.
2. Hughes should be ok as long as he uses his offspeed stuff and locates. (Yankees also have to get to Beckett, who is not as good as he was earlier this year)
ac1
That is a valid point. The red sox are a veteran team like the Yankees, and like the Yankees sometimes have trouble against pitchers they haven’t seen before.
kate-
If we grab the 1st 2 the AJ game becomes biscuits and gravy.
If we grab the 1st 2 the AJ game becomes biscuits and gravy.
___
Not true. We can’t just say, well we can take 2 or 3. Boston has won 10 of 12 this year. You cannot have a throwaway game just because you win the first 2, assuming they do win the first two.
works for me!
Ac1-
Do you have any idea how difficult it’s gonna be to sweep the Sux in Fenway ?
MTU August 30th, 2011 at 5:29 pm
Oh the pain, that sharp stabbing pain. I know that pain.
Do you have any idea how difficult it’s gonna be to sweep the Sux in Fenway ?
___
We’ve done it before…
Point is you cannot put the team in a position where a loss in game 3 is almost a guarantee, even if they get to Lester.
Kate-
If we are fortunate enough to broom the Sux I’m gonna have a big celebration.
Real big.
I don’t believe in throw away games, and I don’t think the Yankees do either
Everest big?
I don’t care if Alex plays against the Sox – just get him healthy
Ac1-
Not saying we can’t. Just that it wont be easy.
Tell that to AJ. He’s the one on the hill that 3rd night.
Kate-
Let’s just say big. Utah big.
I’d like to know how many times the Yanks have won “throwaway games” the last couple of years after [that idiot] Girardi posted the lineup.
I’d have to assume it’s a lot more than they’re ever given credit for.
There are no “throwaway games.”
What the impatient fans think an what the manager/GM thinks are often two different things.
I’m just at a loss on how he puts Posada out there again tonight, especially after last night’s lousy performance. Joe is a man of his word, he just keeps putting him out there game after game just like AJ. What was all this your not playing Jorge stuff of last month?
I just saw the lineup no ARod, he can’t even DH tonight?
More than a few games were ‘tossed aside’ last year when the primary focus was to rest players down the stretch as opposed to trying to win the division.
I almost think we would be better off starting one of the AAA guys in game 3 as opposed to you know who. (Don’t want to hurt his feelings if he reads LoHud)
AJs last start might have been the worst I’ve ever seen him stuff wise……he’s had worse pitching lines but his stuff was very mediocre and very hittable. Flat and poorly located. If he brings that to Fenway he wont make it out of the first inning…….

Pretty difficult, Hughes vrs Beckett, AJ vrs Lester. Hoping CC can keep the broom out of the Sox’s hands is the better bet
Why is everyone ragging on A-Rod? He has an injured thumb. A healthy opposable thumb is pretty essential to swinging a baseball bat.

AJ just looks lost and has no confidence. His control is a mess and it’s probably hard for him even to imagine going out there and having the positive happen. He’s now regressed back to last year, when before you knew what was happening 4-5 runs have scored. he just can’t spot that ball for strikes and I think the word is out so opposing hitters aren’t chasing those pitches waiting instead on his fastball or the walk or the WP.

Just wish he was back in there, been 0 for the last two months. We need him in these games as everyone from here out is critical.
Gary,
Yea…..the hitters are just getting in favorable counts and teeing off on his 2-0 fastballs
Thursday
RHP A.J. Burnett (9-1, 5.31)
vs.
LHP Jon Lester (14-6, 3.09)
7:10 p.m. YES Network / MLB Network
Ah, if only Burnett were 9-1 — lmao
Right now we need to concentrate on winning the 1st 2.
We’ll worry about AJ when we get to him.
From now until the end every time the Yankees play the Sux they have to Cowboy up.
Let’s git ‘er done.
It starts tonight.
MTU,
Let the Sux Cowboy up, let the Yanks Geronimo up.
Tom-
CC needs to give us 8 seconds.
He stays on till the buzzer sounds.
Tom-
Sounds like you’re ready for the little big horn.
And we’re the Indians.
Well Eli had two Int’s again last night. Talk about another project. I really believe Carr is a better QB.
MTU,
As a matter of fact, CC should be like Sitting Bull on the mound tonight. Tito will look like Major Reno.
Tom-
If we sweep and AJ pitches a good game I’m gonna celebrate with a Buffalo burger meal.
That’s for damn sure.
Just to go on record: I don’t give a damn about Howard, his brother, and his touchy-feely thoughts on Josh Beckett, the man.
I also don’t give a damn that he doesn’t like Phil Hughes, just because, oh, Howard just doesn’t….& guess what – Hughes is part of the Yankee “family”, and you’re not, so your gratuitous, freebie shots to run him down here, with no one raising any objections, are not going to get by me.
As for ARod, I see in addition to Granderson and Hughes, and CC….and who else?? among Yankees you feel so comfortable to take passive aggressive cheap shots at….?? Montero, too, wasn’t it??
Tell me again how you’re a Yankee fan??? Better yet, don’t. Get lost.
MTU,
Bring the buffalo and share my Early Times!
Tom-
That would kinda difficult. They’re fairly heavy.
You better bring your stuff out this way.
For transport purposes of course.

——————————
blake, I actually thought his stuff was pretty good in the 1st inning, much better than the start in Minnesota where he couldn’t have gotten AA players out.
In Baltimore his curveball was breaking sharply early in the game and he was throwing 94-95 and still couldn’t get hitters out.
I don’t know what the solution there is, if any, I’m sure the Yankees have pretty tried everything they know by now. You never know in baseball, he could throw a gem on Thursday, maybe the Sox will load up lefties in the lineup, it looks to me like he’s having more success against lefties than righties-of course we’re talking about such a low level of performance it’s nothing to hang you hat on.
