    Martin hurt?
No doubt now Beckett throws at Cervelli.

  2. jacksquat August 31st, 2011 at 3:49 pm

Too bad it’s not Sept 1 yet.

  3. upstate kate August 31st, 2011 at 3:49 pm

well here is hoping that Cisco doesn’t get drilled

  4. GreenBeret7 August 31st, 2011 at 3:49 pm

Interesting trades by the Rangers today. Mike Gonzalez from the Orioles for a PTBNL and Matt Trainor from the Royals.

with Beckett on the mound, I have a very bad feeling. Cerv should go up to bat wearing a suit of armor or something. ;)

  6. jacksquat August 31st, 2011 at 3:50 pm

If Beckett throws at Cervelli I hope Cervelli runs out there and beats the crap out of him. Montero is coming tomorrow so a suspension is ok. :D

  7. Erin August 31st, 2011 at 3:50 pm

eboland11 Girardi said after last night’s game Martin’s toe and thumb had acted up. Obviously still bothering him

  8. CountryClub August 31st, 2011 at 3:51 pm

Martin is dealing with a couple of nagging bumps and brusies.

  9. Jerkface August 31st, 2011 at 3:51 pm

Martin’s toe and thumb were arguing which looks more like the other.

  10. Vineyard Yankee August 31st, 2011 at 3:51 pm

  11. JoeyVegas August 31st, 2011 at 3:52 pm

How could Cervelli possibly get hit? He is the only one who has been hit. If they hit him again, they’ll lose Beckett and Francona for sure. It’s for the Yankees to retaliate.

  12. luis August 31st, 2011 at 3:52 pm

I don`t think he drills Cervi….he is going after Cano or Granderson

  13. Triple Short of a Cycle August 31st, 2011 at 3:52 pm

    jacksquat,

and then Salty can lecture all of us about how hot tempered latinos are

  14. hardwired7 August 31st, 2011 at 3:53 pm

A shot for every Cervelli fist pump (along with an ambulance on stand-by)

  15. UnKnown August 31st, 2011 at 3:53 pm

    Absolutely Classic

  16. Benny Blanco August 31st, 2011 at 3:53 pm

Well, beckett will be head hunting tonight.

  17. austinmac August 31st, 2011 at 3:54 pm

I think Gonzalez is a good pickup. He has been pitching very well lately. Too bad their are so many teams who don’t deal with the Yankees.

  18. Erin August 31st, 2011 at 3:54 pm

The Yankees have been sorely lacking in fist pumps since Joba went down. Cervelli is simply picking up the slack. :)

  19. Mordot11 August 31st, 2011 at 3:55 pm

Does anyone else find the lack of information about ARod disturbing? I’m starting to think there might be something seriously wrong with his thumb.

  20. Yankee Trader August 31st, 2011 at 3:56 pm

Salty is out tonight from getting himself hit on that “strike” swing against MO.

  21. m August 31st, 2011 at 3:57 pm

Montero has to be in Boston, right? I mean, right?

  22. GreenBeret7 August 31st, 2011 at 3:58 pm

The question isn’t about Beckett hitting somebody. The real question is whether the umpires have the guts to put the stop watch on him. 30-45 seconds between pitches is a bit too much.

Grade 1 thumb strain. Doctors told him not to pick up a bat for 2 days. Possible return to lineup on Friday

ARod had a cortisone shot and needs to give it a couple of days to work.

There is nothing in sports this good. I cannot wait for tonight’s game. Odds of it being a boring and uneventful game? Zero.

  28. CountryClub August 31st, 2011 at 3:59 pm

Lack on info on Arod? He’s had an xray and mri and both came back negative. They gave him a cortisone shot on Monday and he should be back in the lineup on Friday.

So many questions and suspense for tonight’s game. Beckett on the mound amplifies things dramatically. I hate him the most of any Sux player. Tons of close seconds though.

  31. upstate kate August 31st, 2011 at 4:00 pm

    GB
that is a good question, especially since it was brought up repeatedly during the espn game.

  32. Mordot11 August 31st, 2011 at 4:00 pm

Thanks BJK, I hadn’t heard that. Let’s hope that gets the job done at least for the rest of the year and he can take care of it in November.

Too bad Shelly Duncan isn’t around anymore. He would protect Cervelli with one of his patented flying jump slides. :)

Ideally, with a couple of runners on base, Cano will line a shot back through the middle and nail Beckett on the ankle and the ball ricochets into the stands for a ground rule infield double.

  42. Yankee Trader August 31st, 2011 at 4:06 pm

    ID-

Don’t forget they added Oriole Uehara also at the trading deadline and now with Gonzalez have a 2nd lefty to go with Oliver.

Wish the Yankees would add a 2nd lefty in the bullpen-maybe their AAA phenom!! :)

  49. GreenBeret7 August 31st, 2011 at 4:12 pm

Tom, I don’t want a broken ankle, just make him limp around. Cano hits the ball as hard as anybody around and very adept at hitting it hard through the middle. i’ll just be satisfied to see Cervelli block pitches in the dirt and through out a couple of runners…maybe chip in with a run producing hit.

  50. Tarheel In NYC August 31st, 2011 at 4:13 pm

Cervelli likes to hit up the middle. After a deliberate brush back pitch from Buckett, a solid line shot off the kneecap landing in fair territory in the outfield would be in order.

  57. Brian August 31st, 2011 at 4:18 pm

Interesting that Nunez is playing 3rd, Chavez the dh.

So looks like the decision is Nunez is a better choice tonight than Posada.

By having Chavez dh, I guess they figure they can pinch hit for him with Jones if need be.

  58. Erin August 31st, 2011 at 4:18 pm

  59. Giuseppe Franco August 31st, 2011 at 4:18 pm

I don’t see Cervelli getting drilled tonight. Lackey drilled him last night so it should be over.

    ==========================================================

All kidding aside, I agree. I think it could get out of hand really quickly if the feud continues into tonight.

And of course, then they need to actually enforce it. None of this “that’s just how Beckett pitches” crap.

  62. Yankee Trader August 31st, 2011 at 4:20 pm

Hughes has had good success against two of the “pests” in the RS lineup-Scutaro and Pedroia, plus Youkiis and Drew, who have hit him are rehabbing in AAA. The only player with more than 10 ab’s against Hughes that’s available, that has hit him is Ortiz.

Now if Burnett decides to try and pitch inside tomorrow he’ll load the bases early with hurting Red Sox players.

  63. West Coast Yankee Fan August 31st, 2011 at 4:21 pm

  65. Erin August 31st, 2011 at 4:21 pm

JackCurryYES Six RedSox will bat from left side vs Hughes. In Hughes’s last start, A’s LHH were 6-9. In start vs Minny b4 that, LHH were 0-16 off him.

  66. vinslol August 31st, 2011 at 4:23 pm

heh.. if somethin happens to cervi we might see some sado behind the plate tonight

anyway, hope hughes doesnt implode, i wanna see a sweep

  67. GreenBeret7 August 31st, 2011 at 4:23 pm

Get a quick strike on Ortiz and then straighten him up with two tight piches to get him off of the plate. Reddick and Ellsbury could be a problem tonight, though.

  68. jacksquat August 31st, 2011 at 4:25 pm

Chavez may be DH’ing just because they don’t want him playing the field two games in a row if they don’t have to. Plus it’s good for Nunez to get playing time, he’s better when he plays regularly.

  69. vinslol August 31st, 2011 at 4:26 pm

I was thinking it was just because they don’t want to lose the DH if something happens to cervi after last night. Sounds like Martin is totally unavailable, so if you DH’d posada and had to use him your offense kinda dies even more

the tough part isn’t the 5 hour difference you have…it’s the 8-15 hour time differences we used to have just to hear any game on AFN radio.

  71. m August 31st, 2011 at 4:28 pm

Olney was on Mike & Mike this morning.

Said it could happen tonight, tomorrow, or next spring. But a Red Sock hitter will probably feel the sting of a fastball. All because Lackey lost his temper.

  72. Phranchise August 31st, 2011 at 4:28 pm

Hughes has to get ahead on batters which means he has control.

And against the lefties he needs some movement on the cutter to get well in on them.

He gets crushed when he leaves too much over the plate to lefties. So jam them in and hit the outside with the fastball.

Here’s hoping he has a good night.

Yankee bats will have to show up though tonight against Beckett. They are due for a decent game against him.

Cano owns him .324 3 hrs 12 rbis

If you look at the lineup they all hit him ok, but Tex is awful 18ks in 44 at bats .182 average.

  73. randy l. August 31st, 2011 at 4:29 pm

“with Beckett on the mound, I have a very bad feeling. Cerv should go up to bat wearing a suit of armor or something”

i really don’t get why the red six are upset with cervelli. with his over the top histrionics, fist pumps and rah rah emotional BS he would fit right in with youlillis, ortiz, lackey, beckett etc

the real problem is cervelli acts more like an emotional red sox player who wears everything on his sleeve than a classy yankee player who stays under control when the pressure is amped up

it’s ironic that someone who acts like them annoys the red sox.

Afternoon, Ray. Hope you weathered the Angry Lady this past weekend.

I didn’t know that ellsbury was aching. That always helps. Reddick always seems to hit right handers well..lefties, not so much. Right field is his next year, regardless. Sox are outfield thin in the system and Drew will be gone.

  95. Yankee Trader August 31st, 2011 at 4:47 pm

on 8/13 Beckett gave up 5 runs on 8 hits, 2 homers, lasting 5 innings in Seattle, in a 5-4 loss to the Mariners.

“Randy, regardless of the score, this game is going 4 hours and 30 minutes. Definitely, screw with Beckeet’s comfort and timing. he tends to rattle pretty easily when somebody shakes him up.”

    gb7-

what beckett is doing is trying to control and intimidate the opposition with the slow down game. it really pisses him off when he doesn’t get his way, so that is exactly what the yankees need to do with him. he does rattle easily when things don’t go his way. i was there when teixeira had the three homer game at fenway and beckett totally imploded after dominating early.

it would be very nice to see it happen tonight.

Erin, thanks for posting. Cute kid. I think it’s great for Joba to be getting to spend so much quality time with his son. Being a responsible parent will help you grow up in a hurry and realize your priorities. I don’t in any way subscribe to the assumptions made here and elsewhere that Joba is some loose canon, but it can’t hurt his personal growth to have this time with his child.

I really hope Joba’s return is as a starting pitcher. Maybe Rothschild’s presence here, and the obvious working chemistry between the two men, will help Joba realize his true potential, which is as a starter. Whoever posted the photo of Joba himself earlier (was that you?), he obviously is taking good care of himself, as well as his son.

Hmm, I dunno, Odds, there’s a harvest of kids who could each be in the mix, but Joba would actually have some MLB experience to bring to the table. It really depends on whether Rothschild’s philosophically in on the idea, and when Joba is actually due to get back. I am being highly assumptive, I know, but I also see the major obstacles cited – low velo and poor mechanics – to have at least been partially overcome. I really would love to ask Rothschild, but even that may not yield a truthful answer; depends on the company line on this…have they reconsidered, at all? We just don’t know yet.

Clutch, that’s the trouble. These cameos are not realistic sample sizes to allow a kid to dig his feet in.

I would hope, though, with Montero’s advanced billing, they would exercise a little more patience. This is why I have been calling for him to be brought up with a reasonable schedule of games in front of us – to get him comfortable. Doesn’t mean he can’t, with his hitting tools, strike lightning right away and ride it for a while. But getting a real opportunity on a team like this in a pennant race…I’m dubious, too.

Shane Spencer, an outfielder, was first called up to the major leagues in 1998 at the age of 26, in the midst of a famously dominant season by the Yankees. He first played briefly in April, then endeared himself memorably to fans in September by hitting 10 home runs, including 3 grand slams in only 67 at-bats, earning him a spot on the Yankees postseason roster.

Spencer was nicknamed Roy Hobbs, in reference to the protagonist in The Natural, because he hit so many home runs and was older than most rookies when brought up to the majors. He hit a long home run in Yankee Stadium during the Divisional Series against the Texas Rangers, and the Yankees went on to win the World Series.

If given the chance will the monster Montero be the next Shane Spencer/Roy Hobbs for the Yankees on their way to a WS title?

  176. Joe from Long Island August 31st, 2011 at 5:53 pm

Hopefully he gets a chance but with guys on the farm, other guys returning, and trades/fa he probably won’t even be considered. ///

We just don’t know yet

    ————————————-

I think he could start for another team if the Yankees decided that the Joba “experiment” has come to an end. I think they have reached a point where they just want him to pitch and not worry about what his role is.

Once Wal-Mart’s finds out that that idiot is using their computer banks to cause trouble, he’ll be looking for another job.

Joba will be a FA in a couple of years and I would think he’d leave to go somewhere to be a starter, but will any team give him that chance since it will have been a few years since he’d started?

Sorry – he’s been a pretty good pitcher in his career, as much as it pains me to say that. But seriously, since 2001, I don’t think there is a pitcher in baseball I despise more than Beckett, and certainly no one’s demeanor that disgusts me more.

Oh how I love watching ARod tee him up. I mean, I’ll take pleasure in watching anyone go deep on Beckett, but the ARod bombs of him are my favorite, 2nd only to his bombs off Schilling. I’m going to miss that tonight.

Tim Gray: “How do you feel about Josh Beckett?”
    Jeff in Canada: “Loathe entirely.”

Now that I got that out of my system…play ball!

\A day late and a dollar short but who’s counting – other than I.

I am guessing that CC is now allowed to be an ace and a postseason contender because he beat the Sux? Not that he was before that of course…

    :D

Still dealing with the vestiges of hurricane Irene in the form of company without power. Unlike Betsy, I imagine, I have full responsibility for entertaining.

    :(

    GO YANKEES!!!
