Pope DFA; Montero DH
Confirmed Mike Ashmore’s report that Ryan Pope has been designated for assignment to open one 40-man spot. Still not sure about the other move, but the Yankees had to open a second roster spot in order to add both Jesus Montero and Scott Proctor.
Lefty Raul Valdes is also listed in the bullpen.
UPDATE, 3:44 p.m.: The Yankees just announced that the second 40-man spot was opened by calling Justin Maxwell up to the big leagues and placing him on the 60-day disabled list (a player has to be on the Major League roster to be on the 60-day).
Derek Jeter SS
Curtis Granderson CF
Mark Teixeira 1B
Robinson Cano 2B

Thanks for the tip yankeefeminista…my only NYY attire is my visor which I will be wearing proudly. My suitcase can go in the belly, everything there is easily replaceable. I too was told that about Naples so I stayed away (they have 60% unemployment, seriously) I did take a tour of the Amalfi coast and Pompeii, I suggest everyone go there one day if you can, simply amazing, you can’t believe you’re seeing what you’re seeing!

Sucks that the most vocal fans (e.g. on radio) are always the least intelligent. Usually they’ve watched 25 games on the season and have nothing better to do in their lives than sit on hold until they get through.
Such is life.
———-
Oftentimes, the most vocal in here are the least intelligent.
Naples is one scary place. We were warned not to go out after dark there
——-
hey i find that offensive, i was born in naples!
welcome back and good luck, Scott!
Hooray! What a glorious day…..not even AJ pitching can ruin this.
Now all we need is Arod back in there.
hey i find that offensive, i was born in naples!
Just reporting what I was told.
One of the few reasons we went there was to see the blue grotto. Of course when we got to Capri the water level was too high for us to get into the cave.
Maxwell and Pope were two of the moves that I thought about last night. I guess they value the left arm of Garrison more than The Pope Of SCAD
GB
Lancelot Links! I completely forgot that show and we watched it all the time. Thanks for the reminder.
I’m hoping for 5 hour game tonight because I’ve got a business dinner and won’t be home until after 9.
I’ll have my fingers crossed for old friends and new ones tonight though.
I really do like that they called him up and he’s being utilized right away! No time for him to think about it. Just do it.
blake-
Are you sure that for the postseason the Yanks can replace a 15 day DL player with a player not on the 40 man roster as of August 31st? Someone is telling me that rule only applies to the 60 day DL. Is it possible Colin Curtis is on the major league 60 day DL?
I find that my day now is not complete without a positive affirmation from Joba Chamberlain.
It is fitting that the Pope had to step aside to bring in the Jesus!!!lol, someone in the FO has to have a great sense of humor or the dramatic, take your pick.
sorry if it’s been asked, but is jesus montero wearing number 21?
I wonder if the Red Sox will counter with their new slugger-Lavernandshirleyaway??
Busy day with lots of news.
Haven’t I heard that the visitors clubhouse at Fenway is cramped and uncomfortable?
In other news, McCourt has an offer in hand for $1.2B. With some Chinese investment included. Chinese “state” investment.
I hope Bud has the brains to nix this one. I know Cuban is irritating, but LA can’t have 2 teams wearing red.
Hey mick-
In regards to our conversation yesterday about today’s line-up, a wise man once said:
“I’m stupid, you’re smart. I was wrong, you were right. You’re the best, I’m the worst. You’re very good-looking, I’m… not attractive.”
Wave,
I just know that several reports have indicated that the Yanks have injuires that would allow Montero on the playoff roster. Sherman tweeted that a couple days ago.
pat, I first saw that show years ago on WGN right after I got home from BN. Every so often, I run across it. Always thought it was hilarious. The dialogue and that clip there reminds me of the old Woody allen movie, “What’s Up, Tigerlily?”
YT,
What position does Laverwhatever plays??
eboland11 A-Rod told Mick Kelleher, who works with the infielders, he wants his pregame work to have “a little more intensity than yesterday.”
Alternative explanation for getting Montero on the postseason roster – the rule that required replacing a position player with a position player and a pitcher with a pitcher was recently changed to only apply once a postseason series starts. Can anyone confirm that?
I’m pretty sure Ramiro Pena is not the answer.
got home from ***VN***
How many games has A-Rod played against Boston this season?
Seems like he’s been out almost every series they’ve played. At least lately.
Colin Curtis has been on the 60 Day DL since early May.
m,
I don’t care what physical assets the Chicoms buy. I remember the cries of doom when the Japanese bought Rockefeller Center. Taking over the world! Well, when management failed they took a bath and lost a ton. The problem about physical assets is you can’t take them home with you. They have to prosper where they are.
Montero already hitting ahead of Russell.
Lots of potential pop in the lineup tonight.
The Beijing Dodgers of Los Angeles?
Lavarnway is a “catcher”.
Wow, the Yanks bring up baby Jesus but they dump the Pope.
lavarnway is a dh or catcher.
if you guys expect selig to do the smart and right thing do not hold your breath.
mccourt is a beantown clown. you make your empire on never going in your wallet and shady deals, guess what you continue to do that your whole business life.
mccourt is destroying the dodgers and the article and local sentiment is not good. people in so cal hate mccourt like you have never seen…..
I would have put Montero in the 9th spot. But that’s just me.
“”Colin Curtis has been on the 60 Day DL since early May.”
I know, but I can’t find out if it is the major league DL or the minor league DL. I thought it was the minor league DL.
I’m now pretty sure that the Yanks can replace a 60 day DL pitcher with a non-pre-August 31st 40 man roster position player, which gives the Yanks plenty of options to carry Montero in the post-season.
Luis-
That’s Ryan Lavarnway who filled in for Ortiz while he was out recently with bursitis of his foot.
My stupid redo of his name was in reference to a prior TV show “Laverne and Shirley” a comedy.

Hi Tom,
Where i live there are a lot of chinese businesses, and believe me they operate in a completely different way than their westerners counterparts, different set of values.
All this talk of Montero making the postseason roster, I’m still not convinced he will deserve a spot. He’s going to have to go on a huge hot streak to deserve a roster spot
“All this talk of Montero making the postseason roster, I’m still not convinced he will deserve a spot. He’s going to have to go on a huge hot streak to deserve a roster spot”
Sure, but I just wanted to understand how it might be possible at all.
Ledger_Yankees Yanks’ first task for Jesus is catching a bullpen session. I would have aimed higher… like healing A-Rod. #nyy
Wave, there is no minor league 60 Day DL. Only players on the 40 man MLB roster can to be placed on the 60 Day DL. Maxwell was on the 40 man roster
Well, there might be hope. Maybe Selig was dumb enough to think that Cuban was that kind of Cuban.
(relax folks, that’s a joke. no offense to communist party members and sympathizers. no offense to Cubans. just joking around today.)
Worst case scenario is a “pretty good” outing by AJ but Yanks still lose like 4 to 2.
If AJ is going to pitch well and stay in the rotation the Yankees have to at least win the game.
Otherwise we lose and have to still look at AJ. Terrible outcome.
YT,
Got it!!, thanks. i know the show, Penny Marshal was one of the actresses and is currently a movie director if i’m not mistaken….anyway it was very hard to spell, lol
GB,
thanks as well
Can we please give Montero some breathing room tonight? You know he’s gonna be nervous ( first major league apperance). Lets not destroy the kid if he goes 0-4 tonight please.
I’ve seen Colin Curtis in the dugout in NY since his surgery.
I wonder if Fenway will have enough sitting room on the bench for all the callups and forget about enough hot water in the visitors clubhouse.
Sure, but I just wanted to understand how it might be possible at all.
—
Yeah fair enough..
Pendleton better be ready bec. he will see action.
luis,
The Chinese ethic (under the table since Mao), at home or abroad, individual or State, is always to make a profit. If it’s a “State Investment”, it means they think it’s a better one than treasury bonds, which it probably is. The LA Dodgers are not an issue of national security, and if you think the Chinese will move the team to Shanghai, then OK. It’s a profit-making plan, probably by the People’s Liberation Army.
OK, GB7. Good to know. Sounds like there are several ways Montero can get on the postseason roster if he plays well enough to earn a spot.
I’m still confused about the rules, but Cashman announced a month ago that there are ways of getting this done.
Imo, these rules should only apply to those who were not in the organization by whatever arbitrary date.
You should be able to use kids from your own farm system any time and in any way you want.
Stupid dinosaurs.

Ok but if he goes 0 for 5 all bets are off
Headline: Yanks release Pope to make room for Jesus.
(I’m sorry the religious references are just too easy!)
…
And this lineup is exactly what I posted I would go with last night.
Montero will not need to go on some massive hitting streak to make the playoff roster. Cashman and the front office know exactly where they stand right now and they are going evaluate montero this entire month. If he struggles to find his way, then he wont make the roster.. however if he is able to come in and hit anywhere from the .275 and up with some pop before the season ends there is a great chance they put him on the playoff roster. It’s not as if the yankees front office needs this guy to hit .450 the final month with 8 bombs to prove his spot on this team. If he can hit lefties, show pop, and show the ability to hit for average he will have a spot on the roster come october. Hopefully he can show off his ability to hit lefties by beating up on lester tonight and next time we play the sox.
Tom,
Good point, all i’m saying is watch out, just in case
These are the exact words, sounds like state-owned banks or hedge funds.
“Specifics weren’t given on the foreign investors except to characterize them as “certain state-owned investment institutions of the People’s Republic of China,” the newspaper reports.”
http://espn.go.com/los-angeles.....eport-says
Torture and Pleasure tonight.
Torture in watching AJ
Pleasure in watching the new kid/kids
Until later everyone.
Go Yankees. Score often and early!!
What kills me about AJ is how quickly he loses the strike zone. Even if by some miracle he gets a 1-2-3 inning the next inning is almost always a horror show of line drives, wild pitches and walks. Same thing if by another act of god he goes 0-2 on a hitter. Next pitch is wide (on purpose) and the next three are nowhere near the strike zone. It’s like watching a 12 year-old pitch except this dude makes $17 million/year.
All we can expect from him tonight:
3 2/3 IP
7ER
one million excuses
one more stolen paycheck
Hedge Funds? Is this code for the University Of Georgia football slush fund?
With AJ pitching and Montero’s debut, I’m sure the game thread will be, ummm…interesting.
Luis
From an earlier thread; re: Miriam and Oscar(cito)-
I had to step out earlier. Can’t place the names, nor can a close family member I consulted. Pablo Morales had seven or eight children way back when – it’s a pretty big family.
As for the Cisneros owning the Leones, it’s as if Trump owned the Yankees.
The Morales were akin to the Steinbrenners.
m,
It might be one of the banks probably, they are state owned
Well, Montero never got traded, today we will start to see if this was the right decision. I think it was, I’ll buy the hype that he can rake.
DYD,
They weren’t Morales, they were Prieto the other partner. And yes i miss those days when your family owned the team, now is very Trump like as you say, lol

Never met Oscar, but yes, it was a hands-on, family operation. They all breathed baseball.
I’m out too guys….enjoy the rest of the afternoon
It’s gonna take 9-10 runs + for the Yankees to win this game. AJ puts us in that big of a hole, with what he will give up AND force the ‘pen to cover before getting to Robertson & Mo. ( and NO, I don’t believe Sori is above giving up a run or 2 either ) Here’s hoping that this lineup is ready to MASH, and word to the wise to JARHEAD……NO SAC BUNTS TODAY, YOU MAROON !!!
imo, it was the right decision. It would have been worth trading him for Halladay, and to a lesser extent Lee. Jays and Mariners chose not to trade the respective pitchers to us, so that was out of our hands.
I was hesitant to trade our best offensive prospect, but I would have done it in a heartbeat for Halladay, and two heartbeats for Lee.

Tech not doing to well on that score, either, this year.
so much for letting montero get acclimated to being on the team for even a day before starting.

I fly to London Tuesday at 11am, don’t head back home till Friday.
63 = 21 (minor league number) x 3
We know he can’t have 21 x 2
no, he can’t have that.
I look forward to the day when the Son of God is catching his Heavenly Father in the ninth
When thy retire number 20, will Montero change his number to 83?
Posada, by the way has had 5 different uniform numbers…#20 since 1997.
62, 41, 55, 22 and 20
Was just reading that it apparently is only supposed to be a 1 day strike on Tuesday the 6th due to austerity.
What happened to Tim Norton ? Still injured ?
Where’s Flores ? Is he coming up ?
Proctor will not help.
Romine should be up also.
I think he might get 21 next year if he sticks, and if that’s the number he wants.
GB7,
GA Tech would have been in the Championship Bowl Series in 2009, except for, um. some roster improprieties. As for the SEC rivalries, UGA has Bama, UFL (you haven’t lived until you see this one live in Jacksonville, FL, “a neutral site”, and, increasingly, USC (South Carolina, I mean).
As for schedules, the Dawgs open with Boise State this Saturday. Creampuff opener. What kills me her is that they have a FOUR-HOUR pre-game, a three-hour football game, then a FOUR-Hour postgame. No, they don’t take this stuff seriously down here.
Uh oh…

Yeah I’m not going to let it begin to bother me now, no way. I just arrived in Florence. Time to get some pizza, mingle with the locals and then get a glimpse of the 2nd coming sometime after 1am local. Trust me, I been there….badabing!!!!
Right! From now on, AJ gets August off. Problem solved.

Now what is his defense for May, June, July and September?
austin,
Of course, I was kidding. What’d they rank last year, 3rd or 4th? I was just saying that the UGA doesn’t play “creampuffs”. Damn, South Georgia almost be them last year. Who is Ohio State’s opener this year?, or Oklahoma’s?
Thanks austinmac! Any advice on where to go/eat etc…? I haven’t done much research yet besides some of the museums. I’ve got 2 full days after tonight.
AJ still has great stuff so you can’t give up on him
7 * 9 = 63
mick * maris = montero
Mike
No problem. Have fun. Make sure to get to Vivoli for celebratory gelato after a Yankee win tonight
Montero is one of 9 players in the lineup so 63 / 9 = 7
7 is Mickey Mantle’s number and he was 19 when he got to the big leagues. Montero is 21 so take the difference in their ages and add it to 7, we get 9. Now add the number or RBI’s Montero has in AAA this year (67) for a total of 76. Montero was the 3rd ranked prospect by Baseball America this year so add 3 to 76 for a total of 79. Yogi Berra was the best Yankee catcher of all time so take his number (8) and multiply it by 2 because Montero is already the second best Yankee catcher of all time. So that equals 16, now do 79-16 which equals 63 – Montero’s jersey number.
I just blew your minds
Mike-I’m so jealous you’re going to Italy! Have a great time
You’ll have to make sure and give us details from your trip
Numerology reigns!
I think Montero should choose for his number – pie 3.1415926. Yes, that’s right, the pie symbol on his back. That will blow everyone’s mind, especially his own…he may never have heard of it.
Tom,
Ok. I’m slow today. My son went to school there. Congrats to them for playing a real team. Texas usually requires the opponent to have a hyphen in their name. Then, of course, they are not ready for a good team.

austin,
Most of the pre-season top ten will be playing The Little Sisters of the Poor this weekend. Sorry my joke got missed. Glad this game will be played on green rather than blue.
Make that bistecca Fiorentina. Next time I might get two orders.

Ok I’m out to check out the sites…
Showed Montero on Ballpark Cam via MLB Network working out in the outfield. Dude looks absolultely ready.
Has a look of a guy who feels like he should’ve be called to the show long ago.
Tom,
Less ducks on the green. Texas hired the Boise offensive coordinator. After last year (5-7), help is needed.
There aren’t any Montero props on my sportsbook. I’m getting the idea that the rest of the world isn’t as excited as we are.

Jesus Montero, C, New York Yankees. The Yankees haven’t confirmed Montero’s arrival, but he has. “I am very happy,” Montero told RCR-750 AM in Caracas, Venezuela, according to the New York Daily News. “My family will be there with me. I will enjoy the day… I thought I was going to make the team in spring training. But I keep working and here are the results.” At Class AAA this season, Montero hit .288 with 18 homers and 67 RBIs. He could serve as the Yankees’ DH on Thursday night.

AJ still has great stuff so you can’t give up on him
“““““““““““““
This viewpoint is shared by the NYY it seems, but also appears to be the problem. He had a historically bad ERA last year and once again ranks near the bottom of ALL qualifying pitchers in ERA. He can be good in short bursts, but he will eventually fall to pieces and you will lose. His results tell you that he does not have great stuff. He can, when his mechanics all line up correctly for a few batters. But his mechanics are not repeatable and he will eventually lose control of his stuff and the team will suffer.
So what’s going on on MLB tv? A giant-sized Boston love-fest???

It’s sure going to be exciting each time Montero swings a bat tonight – he’s starting his MLB career facing a great pitcher, but who knows? At least let us have a little fun tonight, lol
TD213 – AJ doesn’t have “great stuff”. That’s a complete myth, that is not borne out by observation or results. He’s got a 94 mph fastball that he throws over the heart of the plate, and he’s got a breaking ball that he throws in the dirt. That does not constitute great stuff. It doesn’t even constitute good stuff, or barely acceptable stuff. It’s garbage.
How many batter do you think Allan James will last tonight?
Betsy,
Having fun on a game blog is VERBOTTEN!
Midges in Cleveland last night…moths in Holliday’s er last week and Hughes’ eye last night. Nature is fighting back.

“I felt like I was dreaming,” Montero said when he found out he was in the lineup. “It was like somebody punched me in the face or something like that. This is a great night tonight. This is amazing for me.”

Jesus Montero on Yankees: “This is my team. I want to be here forever.”
Not trying to preach or get on a soap box but the references of Montero and subjects from the Bible could prove offensive to some.
Out of respect it would be nice if people would try to refrain from that.
Montero DHing plus ARod on the bench leaves them plenty of time to chat between innings
Somebody will have a new target to hate…dislike…not trust. and next year, it’s back to Austin Romine, who is going up to Scranton, where it will be like “Groundhog Day” again.
Jesus,
Turn the other cheek, then hit one out.

MaineYankee – Who did Montero’s mother name him after? A plumber from Topeka?
Not trying to preach? (light chuckle)

Girardi on Montero: “We’re hoping he can give us some lightning in a bottle”
Tom, lol…… It’s just a matter of tempering expectations. Montero might very well be a stud, but every kid struggles at times.
It’s “Hey. Zeus”. a greeting to the Greek god of “Homer(s)”.
Can you describe this look
–
He had A-rod and Jeter each dangling from a bicep and he was running around the field spinning them around
OMG, I laughed so hard. Jesus coming down from Mt. Olympus with 2 demi-gods as bracelets.

this is one of the funniest comments Ive read on this blog. I just woke up my dog from laughing so loud.
This is a happy place today!
Betsy,
No expectations, just hope he looks good. A loud foul, a good at bat or two, and maybe even a base hit. If, though. . .

Lightning? That’s offensive.
I don’t know why, but I just saw the lineup on YES’ batting practice game. Montero’s name and picture just look “right.”
Betsy -
Sure hope we are allowed to enjoy this, too.
montero won’t even know he played tonight until tomorrow or maybe even next week until it sinks in.

Wish Montero all the best.
Sounds like he’s never been more ready to take this opportunity and run with it.
Enjoy the game, everyone!
LET’S GO YANKEES!!
Tom, I just meant overall, not today’s game……Montero sounds so happy that it’s hard not to be excited for him
MaineYankee -
I’m not loving the religious references, but it will be hard to fight something like that. So, I’m just trying to take it in the spirit it’s intended (I think).
Villa Nova, my guess is you won’t and that the post-game thread will be a better place to hang out
Thoughts on a Sterling Montero homerun call?
The Yanks never hit Lester so I wouldn’t expect Montero in his 1st major league game to be the one to solve him. Then again with AJ on the mound it will probably take 15 runs to win.
OH!!! MY!!! GAWD!!!
They just showed Montero in the outfield and there was a halo over his head. even saw somebody washing his feet.
Villa Nova-Ya
Thanks
Somehow I don’t see Boston interviewing NY guys. Why are we always subject to the Boston point of view, even on YES? It’s on MLB, ESPN, isn’t that enough? Can’t we have a Boston-free zone?
I know, I know. Journalism. Open-mindedness, yada, yada, yada. Listen, I’m usually all about seeing both sides of the coin. But not here!!!!!

Not saying I expect Montero to go wild, but having young instinctual talent based hitters can be a boon. Cano wasn’t afraid of anyone when he got called up. Montero doesnt have tons of film to analyze his weakness, he doesnt have to watch a ton of film. He is just building his book on pitchers starting now, so he is free to take aggressive swings at the balls he see’s instead of being a veteran guy waiting for just the right pitch that was expected.

The only ones that will be offended are business owners on Lansdowne
Maine, it beats the Hell out of the things they will be saying the first time he goes hittless or the things that have been said about the players on here.
MaineYankee
No, thank you for bringing it up. I thought I was the only one.

I don’t do the game thread.
Villa Nova-Ya,
What is it that bothers you?

Thank you.
I’ve enjoyed my banters with you so I appreciate that.
Any time, Bud. Don’t know how you guys can deal with the gametime threads any more. Anyway, again…my apologies.
Triple Short -
I’m simply not comfortable with the references to Jesus Montero as savior, the references to Lazarus, etc., etc. I know it’s a natural with the name and all. And as I said, I know it’s going to happen, and I will just get used to it.
But understand, if there are positive references if he does well, there will be negative, such as if he strikes out in a big situation, will crucifixion references be far behind?
It borders on disrespect of my religion, HOWEVER, I DO UNDERSTAND that that is not the intent, that it is in fun.
But perhaps the worst thing about it all is not religion related in the least: It gets old and tedious pretty quickly and it’s awfully predictable – no originality whatsoever!!! (Although the reference to getting rid of Pope in place of Jesus, was more original than I ever anticipated. – I do have a sense of humor.)
All things being equal, if AJ puts up the same #’s as Phil did last night, does he get the 5th starter job?
The World wants to know…
more than if montero hit a homer his first time up, i’d be impressed if he walked.
a walk in that situation with lester pitching would show a really advanced young player.
Randy, it could be a while before Montero is much of a walker. Pretty much the same sort of hitte with same mentality to hitting as Cano.
