the fact is that while i didnt like the whole steroid mess, i dont blame any one player when everyone else was doing it. and i dont care that arod is the guy who in the end profited the most from the results of his ped usage.

what i do care about is that he is breaking down with 6/$180 left on his contract, an amount so big that it strains even the almost limitless resources of the yankees. even for a 35 year old, a decline of more than 75% in homers over the past 5 seasons is alarming, whether caused by steroids, girlfriends or radiowaves from ufo’s.
    ——————–
I’m not the biggest Arod fan in the world but this really isn’t fair.

You are taking a career year in 2007 (54 HRs) and comparing it to 2011, a year where he will have a career low in games played and declaring a 75% decline.

Arod had 35 HRs in 2006 and an OPS of .914-his OPS for the past two seasons is in the .850 range, that’s less than a 10% difference. His slugging % is also down less than 10% since 2004 and 2006.

This is the 1st year he’s ever missed this many games-he played 137 last year and 124 the previous year after missing the 1st month.

There is no doubt his overall performance will drop over the rest of his contract but the only one to blame for that is Hank Steinbrenner, isn’t the one who overruled the rest of the Yankees front office and resigned Arod after he opted out?

It also doesn’t mean the Yankees can’t win with him playing 3rd base, they won 4 out of 5 with 3rd basemen producing far less than even his current numbers in the late ’90s.

    We want Montero…..catch him

  4. pkyankfan69 September 6th, 2011 at 4:42 pm

I would be pissed that Montero is not in the lineup but this game will not be played tonight anyway.

  5. Erin September 6th, 2011 at 4:43 pm

Does Montero not deserve a day off??? He did have to work on Labor Day, you know. ;)

  7. GreenBeret7 September 6th, 2011 at 4:45 pm

Dad, Blanchard played a little first, left and right field when Maris would move to center field. Maris was a sensational center fielder, possibly better than Mantle.

Imagine the Indians having both Maris and Colavito in the same outfield and trading them for an aging batting champion and a bunch of utility players like Woodie Held within 4 months of each other? No wonder they didn’t win for 40 years.

  8. Trigeminal Neuralgia Yank September 6th, 2011 at 4:45 pm

Maybe this is the ol ” I was gonna play ya Po, but the rain and all” trick..
Plus we will need all hands on deck for the newly scheduled double headers after this crummy week..

  9. Ys Guy September 6th, 2011 at 4:46 pm

arguing that nobody should base a rate of decline from the high point that set the standard for what arod is being paid is riduiculous.

and saying that his low water point shouldn’t be of concern because he was injured, when the point was that he is breaking down is equally ridiculous.

  10. P September 6th, 2011 at 4:47 pm

Why take the team out of montero and go with posada? Hasn’t Jorge had enough chances.. I get that he wants to play, but let the kid keep going .. booooo is right LGY.

  11. DadinIowa September 6th, 2011 at 4:47 pm

Yeah, KC was our minor league team then…. we seemed to do really well in our trades with them :) GB, what do you recall about phil linz?

  12. theREALkevin September 6th, 2011 at 4:47 pm

Lol @ no Montero…. Still worried about Jorge’s ego I see… Putting the best lineup on the field should be all that matters… Lame

  13. P September 6th, 2011 at 4:47 pm

err I meant take the steam out

  14. DadinIowa September 6th, 2011 at 4:48 pm

This would have been a perfect game to hit Cano 4th and Teix 5th. Based on this lineup, I don’t think you’re going to see Teix dropped to 5th until next yr (if even then).

    Dadiniowa,
Yogi and Howard played left, every once in a while.

    tomingeorgia September 6th, 2011 at 4:32 pm
    Dad,
It could have happened, but I don’t recall, but if Blanchard was on one of his hot hitting streaks, I wouldn’t be surprised if he did.

    tomingeorgia September 6th, 2011 at 4:35 pm
    GB7,
It was always entertaining to see Yogi in left in the late afternoon autumn sunshine.

  18. fantasygame101 September 6th, 2011 at 4:50 pm

After hitting 2 hr against a righty, montero sits against a righty that is not dominant. Only Girardi can make this up…

  19. West Coast Yankee Fan September 6th, 2011 at 4:50 pm

The only person who like this lineup is AJ Burnett.

  20. GreenBeret7 September 6th, 2011 at 4:52 pm

    Dad,

Maris was traded from Cleveland to KC and from KC to NY a year and a half later.

Linz was basically a utility player…OK glove, not really a bat, except for the ’64 WS, though he did have a bit of power. Plays a mean “Mary Had A Little Lamb” on the harmonica.

  21. ac1 September 6th, 2011 at 4:52 pm

    ___

Hughes won’t be judged on a win or loss due to lack of offense.

Why does Burnett like this lineup?

  23. Trigeminal Neuralgia Yank September 6th, 2011 at 4:52 pm

    What does this even mean?

  25. GreenBeret7 September 6th, 2011 at 4:54 pm

Berra wasn’t terrible in left, but, not a Gold Glover. Better than having Adam Dunn in the outfield.

  26. ADam September 6th, 2011 at 4:55 pm

Once again, bending over backwards for Jorge instead of putting the best lineup on the field…. man this is an old hat

  27. West Coast Yankee Fan September 6th, 2011 at 4:56 pm

Girardi at his worst. A 21 year old high on adrenaline goes yard twice against a righty and he sits him in favor of Posada. Unreal.

I would also switch Cano and Tex. Granderson and Cano back to back is no weakness IMO when looking at Tex batting left-handed.

  28. Ys Guy September 6th, 2011 at 4:56 pm

n i like the lineup based on the fact that posada can be of value to this team in the PS, but not if he’s sitting on the bench from now till october.

girardi was brilliant in ’09 getting the most production out of declining johnny damon and hideki matsui by resting them regularly. and each time, people threw a fit on here every time they were sat down. but how did that work out in the PS?

montero isnt going to lose his swing because he sits a game but posada is going to be useless if hes benched the rest of the season.

and one more thing, girardi is posting a lineup for a game that is not going to be played, so maybe he actually has no intention of using posada but using a rainday to make him feel like he still has a part to play…

  33. JM September 6th, 2011 at 4:57 pm

Posada has to play at least occasionally. I agree he could be of value in the postseason, but not if he gets absolutely no at-bats over the next 3 weeks. Jesus will be fine missing one day.

  34. Erin September 6th, 2011 at 4:57 pm

Yes, the world will explode because Posada is DHing instead of Montero in a game that might not even get played.

  35. blake September 6th, 2011 at 4:57 pm

  37. Trigeminal Neuralgia Yank September 6th, 2011 at 4:57 pm

I grew up during the Dale Berra experiment in pgh. How they were related athletically I have no idea.

  38. Captain Clutch September 6th, 2011 at 4:57 pm

GirardI is starting to treat these games like spring training games. Where everyday a guy sits so the back up guys can get at bats. Which is fine but keep montero in there and stop platooning him!!!

  39. CountryClub September 6th, 2011 at 4:57 pm

Assuming Montero keeps hitting, there is a thought out there that one of Posada/Chavez is going to be left off the roster. If that’s the case they both need to get AB’s over the next 20 games to see who’s hitting better going into the playoffs.

  40. GreenBeret7 September 6th, 2011 at 4:58 pm

Yeah…Blanchard, Berra, Long and Mantle rotating in and out of the DH slot. Damned…that team had everything a team could want, didn’t it? Offense, defense, base running speed (they just didn’t steal many bases), 5 man rotation, bullpen with closer, short man, long man and swing man.

thanks for taking a comment that was made as ‘not fair’ to something that is ‘ridiculous’ and excuse me for having an opinion.

Enjoy whatever pleasure you derive out of complaining.

How a relatively minor knee injury that needed arthroscopy and a jammed thumb because he dove for a ball equate to ‘breaking down’ is beyond me when the same injuries could hit someone in their 20s.

Did you actually expect Arod to continue to produce at a near record level for the rest of his contract?

Could anyone but an idiot (cue the Hank Steinbrenner entrace music, please) look at his career stats and base a contract on a career year?

If you can answer Yes to the above then I feel sorry for you.

  59. 108 stitches September 6th, 2011 at 5:08 pm

Roger Maris was a very underrated outfielder. Well above average arm and positioned himself well.
Never saw a player with just an average lead off 1st base be able to motor to 3rd base on just a base hit. It was like trying to stop a freight train. Powerful legs.

    Yep.

The yankees won yesterday, had a lot of offense, but I don’t see anyone singing the praises of Garcia’s performance yesterday, except the O’s.

It’s about what they see from their pitchers, not which pitcher has the best offense behind them.

I wonder if A-rod is okay. Was listening to the O’s feed and they mentioned A-rod limping.

Would like to see more of Montero, but if Posada has a shot at making the post season than he has to play.

    ========================

a lot of people don’t realize that most players do not respect Girardi as a manager as much as they would someone tey didn’t play with. Girardi is also scared of upsetting his players, hence forcing posada in the lineup, not making changes when they should’ve been made, etc..

a little league manager can take a team of this calibur to the playoff’s ! Give me a break. Joe’s had his fair share of blunders this year and they are still in first place. It’s not like the manager has to swing the bat. GIrardi is lame, not to mention his canned media speeches.

I like his comment today about Montero hitting and how to be a good hitter.. hmmm didn’t work out to well for Joe when he was hitting now did it? Nothing like getting advice from a know-it-all that can’t perform what he’s tell you to do.

  76. DocTodd September 6th, 2011 at 6:05 pm

Girardi is ‘The Cooler’…..he often takes a hot hitter out of the lineup, and ices him on the bench.
