Yankees pregame: More on lineup

Posted by: Brian Heyman - Posted in Misc on Sep 07, 2011 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

So the lineup looks right out of a spring training game at Legends Field, complete with names like Laird, Golson, Pena and Nunez. But it all stems from this last game that ended at 2:15 a.m.

“We had guys probably get to bed at 4 o’clock in the morning,” Joe Girardi said. “Asking them to turn around and play a game, you’re risking a lot.”

Girardi said it was still a tough call.

“We’re trying to win the division,” Girardi said. “We’re still sending out guys who can play.”

Montero is in the lineup, s’all good.

  2. Irreverent Discourse September 7th, 2011 at 11:50 am

If the game is close late… I’d imagine there will be lots of pinch hitting.

  3. Erin September 7th, 2011 at 11:51 am

NotHankStein I really enjoyed last night’s 11pm start. I usually wake up at about 7pm from the previous night’s bender so it worked for me!

  4. Irreverent Discourse September 7th, 2011 at 11:51 am

60% chance of rain until 5pm… would it be wrong if I rooted for a delay so they don’t start til we all get home from work? :)

  5. Vineyard Yankee September 7th, 2011 at 11:52 am

“We’re trying to win the division,” Girardi said.

    =================

Now that’s good to hear. Actually very good to hear.

  6. blake September 7th, 2011 at 11:52 am

Montero being in there is enough for me to watch…..wouldn’t shock me to see that lineup.score some runs.

  7. Crawdaddy September 7th, 2011 at 11:52 am

I don’t have a problem with Girardi, but it still doesn’t hide the fact that those with tickets today are going to be disappointed with so many substitutions with minor league players.

  8. Shame Spencer September 7th, 2011 at 11:53 am

ID – Not at all. Maybe if we root collectively it’ll happen (root root root)!

    Joe,

It’s not like your players are working 12 hour shifts in a foundry.

  11. Patrick September 7th, 2011 at 11:54 am

    Poor Swisher

“Asking them to turn around and play a game, you’re risking a lot”

I guess they don’t care if they risk swish :(

  12. Ys Guy September 7th, 2011 at 11:54 am

jeter, grandy tex chavez on the bench, O’s bullpen…im not too concerned as long as aj keeps it close…

  13. blake September 7th, 2011 at 11:54 am

If you have a ticket you get to see Montero and Arod at least…..that’s pretty cool

  14. Crawdaddy September 7th, 2011 at 11:55 am

    Good point about Swisher.

  15. Irreverent Discourse September 7th, 2011 at 11:55 am

blake – That’s more excitement than Mariner and Astro fans get with their A lineup.

  16. Irreverent Discourse September 7th, 2011 at 11:55 am

If I had to guess I would say Swisher probably volunteered to play.

  17. ac1 September 7th, 2011 at 11:55 am

    I’m curious.
Not that i care about the lineup, but why does Swish have to play when everyone else who started last night doesnt? Too tired to look it up, but did they only have 8 players that could come in today?

  18. Crawdaddy September 7th, 2011 at 11:56 am

I expect some substitutions if the game is close and the opportunity presents itself for the Yankees to win this game.

  19. hardwired7 September 7th, 2011 at 11:56 am

These “pick the names out of a hat” lineups are usually good for at least 10 runs.

  20. LGY September 7th, 2011 at 11:56 am

I would have played Posada at first but other than that it’s Montero Day so who cares?

  21. blake September 7th, 2011 at 11:56 am

Swisher has enough energy to play 24 hourse straight I think.

  22. Erin September 7th, 2011 at 11:56 am

    Swisher’s the Energizer Bunny.

  23. Patrick September 7th, 2011 at 11:56 am

    Joe,

It’s not like your players are working 12 hour shifts in a foundry.

True but baseball is different. Your mind needs to be sharp and awake – just imagine trying to hit a 95 mph fastball on 4 hours sleep. Working in a foundry, or other blue collar jobs, yeah you need to be awake but you don’t need 100% of your mental sharpness.

  24. Crawdaddy September 7th, 2011 at 11:57 am

Swisher drinks enough Red Bull to play 24 hours straight.

  25. blake September 7th, 2011 at 11:57 am

“blake –That’s more excitement than Mariner and Astro fans get with their A lineup.”

    No doubt……

  26. Patrick September 7th, 2011 at 11:57 am

Not that i care about the lineup, but why does Swish have to play when everyone else who started last night doesnt? Too tired to look it up, but did they only have 8 players that could come in today?

    They have Dickerson..

  27. LGY September 7th, 2011 at 11:58 am

As long as Jeter is in the lineup when I attend games I’m usually happy.

  28. Crawdaddy September 7th, 2011 at 11:58 am

“Working in a foundry, or other blue collar jobs, yeah you need to be awake but you don’t need 100% of your mental sharpness.”

You ever work in a foundry? I have, if you don’t stay mental sharp, you can lose your life.

  29. Jerkface September 7th, 2011 at 11:58 am

I dunno about this, if you dont have 100% of your mental sharpness in baseball you strike out. If you don’t have 100% of your mental sharpness in a foundry you get steam pressed.

  30. Kelvin September 7th, 2011 at 11:58 am

Hope Montero blast one out to third deck

  31. Shame Spencer September 7th, 2011 at 11:58 am

Swish just got some rest a couple games back, I bet he doesn’t play tomorrow.

  32. pat September 7th, 2011 at 11:59 am

Kangaroo Court sentence for Swish for not knowing there was 1 out when he bunted.

  33. Shame Spencer September 7th, 2011 at 12:00 pm

Comparing the jobs of athletes to the everyday working man… never works guys.

  34. Nick in SF September 7th, 2011 at 12:00 pm

    That’s very insensitive, Patrick.

My uncle lost his left arm in a foundry accident. To this day he refuses to tell me what a foundry is.

I don’t care about the latter, but if the one of my players strikes out I will rage on the internet. So which is more important?

I don’t even know what a foundry is, is it like a bunch of inventors founding stuff?

  36. Crawdaddy September 7th, 2011 at 12:00 pm

What else is there to talk about then?

  37. DocTodd September 7th, 2011 at 12:01 pm

  42. Yankee Trader September 7th, 2011 at 12:03 pm

Swisher+Red Bull-he’ll be ready to play.

Not much history against Britton. The all righty lineup will be filled with players he never faced.

“I don’t even know what a foundry is, is it like a bunch of inventors founding stuff?”

That was obvious when you made your comment. A foundry is a very dangerous place. In some foundries, they pour molten metal at temperatures of 2000 degrees.

Losing limbs is a common cause of injury in a foundry.

  51. RSM September 7th, 2011 at 12:09 pm

So what did we learn today kiddies?
Stay in school and study hard or you will loose one or more limbs toiling in a foundry 12 hours per day.

  52. blake September 7th, 2011 at 12:09 pm

I hope Buck starts his regulars and the Yanks still pound them.

  53. MTU September 7th, 2011 at 12:10 pm

  62. Crawdaddy September 7th, 2011 at 12:12 pm

“Stay in school and study hard or you will loose one or more limbs toiling in a foundry 12 hours per day.”

Actually, I stayed in school and got my degree and then had a good career in manufacturing management which included at least 30 years managing foundries. Made a lot of money, but always respected heavy equipment and molten metal.

  63. Shame Spencer September 7th, 2011 at 12:14 pm

Adam Jones is not in the starting lineup Wednesday afternoon against the Yankees.
He’ll get the day off with the quick turnaround from Tuesday’s rain-soaked game.
J.J. Hardy and Matt Wieters are also out of the lineup Wednesday afternoon.

Fair point, Shame! It’s going to be interesting to see whether he can build on his start in Boston or whether that proves to be a one-hit wonder. I’m hoping the former but suspect the latter.

  67. DocTodd September 7th, 2011 at 12:16 pm

    Girardi was pleased with Hughes.

“I thought he threw the ball well,” Girardi said. “I thought his curveball might have been the best we’ve seen it all year.”

    **********************

Once again señor Jerkface is humiliated as his lack of understanding of the game of baseball is revealed once again.

  87. blake September 7th, 2011 at 12:29 pm

His CB hasn’t been very good in general this year though…..he threw some good ones last night

  88. JM September 7th, 2011 at 12:30 pm

Yeah, can’t see Mo pitching three straight days. Who closes if they have a lead late? Soriano?

  89. Shame Spencer September 7th, 2011 at 12:30 pm

bruceb – I have the same expectations on AJ. I want to see him build on what he had going on in Boston but to say I’m going into this with tempered optimism is an understatement..

  90. Yank 97 September 7th, 2011 at 12:31 pm

“I thought his curveball might have been the best we’ve seen it all year”

    —————-

That’s not saying a lot – his curve has been inconsistent at best in most of his starts. He still needs to go to the faster one, as Jerk said yesterday.

  91. Jerkface September 7th, 2011 at 12:37 pm

Yup and even in yesterdays start the orioles hit it for a hard line drive or took it for a ball too often. He managed to get Chris Davis, Andino, and Reynolds with the slow curve, but those guys strike out a lot. To get better hitters like Wieters/Markakis/The Red Sox he needs a faster curve. Hughes himself said as much, even after a start in which someone on here was crowing about how good the curve was. Speed differential in baseball. If merely throwing a slow with a lot of break was the key to success there would be more eephus pitches. Fact is, most people don’t throw the curve as slow as Hughes did last night.

  92. J. Alfred Prufrock September 7th, 2011 at 12:38 pm

Hughes’ CB was inconsistent even last night. He threw some nice ones that disappeared, others that broke too early and weren’t as sharp on the break. For a stretch there, he couldn’t get them to bite cos they were too far off the plate. I was happy though to see some real good ones mixed in there.

  93. MTU September 7th, 2011 at 12:39 pm

    My Rx for Hughes:

    1 Develop a splitter

2 Drop the cutter and go with a 2 seamer

And of course, go to API in the OS. Target the shoulder area.

    Get in the BSOYL.

  94. Erin September 7th, 2011 at 12:39 pm

    JM September 7th, 2011 at 12:30 pm
Yeah, can?t see Mo pitching three straight days. Who closes if they have a lead late? Soriano?

Were either of them in last night’s game? Damn sleep. I missed everything! :x

  95. Bret The Hitman September 7th, 2011 at 12:39 pm

Is Markakis the only impact bat in the O’s lineup tonight?

  96. upstate kate September 7th, 2011 at 12:40 pm

    D-rob pitched the 8th

  97. blake September 7th, 2011 at 12:40 pm

Hughes was like 72 with the CB earlier in the year…..he was 74/75 with it last night which was.better……threw some tight ones at that speed. However, he’d be more effective with a tight 78-80 mph hook……it just gives the hitter less time to decide.

  98. bruceb September 7th, 2011 at 12:41 pm

Joe G is sugar-coating Hughes’ outing last night. I think if he had been up against the Red Sox or the Rangers, he’d have been out of the game before the end of the fourth inning. Some of the O’s hitters helped him out big time.

  99. J. Alfred Prufrock September 7th, 2011 at 12:41 pm

That is not true I saw his post-game and Hughes said he was happy with his curveball. Girardi said it might have been the best he has thrown it all year.

Once again you are wrong and can’t admit it.

  101. J. Alfred Prufrock September 7th, 2011 at 12:42 pm

I take what Girardi says w/ a grain of salt as he never throws a player under the bus.

  104. blake September 7th, 2011 at 12:44 pm

Hughes pitched well….and he did throw some nice CBs considering its tough to spin the ball when its wet like that…..but it coukd still use some improvement and he needs to get more consistent with it.

  105. J. Alfred Prufrock September 7th, 2011 at 12:44 pm

I’m tired of the fragile egos on this board. The discussion is a bore – it’s not about baseball, it’s about some dumb struggle some engage in and imagine they’ve actually won something or come off well.

  106. Irreverent Discourse September 7th, 2011 at 12:44 pm

Again, not accurate. I see Girardi all the time in his post game make realistic and critical comments about a pitcher’s stuff. “Burnett didn’t have his curveball tonight”, or Garcia’s splitter didn’t have it’s usual bite”.

  109. Ys Guy September 7th, 2011 at 12:45 pm

steady light rain in nnj now

  110. J. Alfred Prufrock September 7th, 2011 at 12:46 pm

Jury’s out on Hughes until he gains back his arm strength next season, at least that’s how I feel. I’m happy he’s even pitching, at this point, and I still have high hopes for him next year and beyond.

  111. REZ12 September 7th, 2011 at 12:46 pm

“Hughes himself said as much, even after a start in which someone on here was crowing about how good the curve was.”

People did the same thing after the Cleveland start – talked about how “crisp” his curve looked.

Yeah, it looked so crisp that Hughes himself said on the postgame that it was awful and he has to change it again to get it back to what it was because it was too loopy.

WCYF – They also said Burnett had his best start in weeks. Does that mean he’s good now? Your logical fallacies and traps are ridiculous.

    ************

This is about a specific pitch in a specific game not a glittering generality about a pitcher’s overall effectiveness. Poor thinking on your part and logical and accurate on mine.

    1. I know a good curveball when I see one and last night Hughes had a very good one.

    2. Singleton and Flash said the same thing last night, that Hughes had a very good curve ball.

    3. Girardi said the same thing, that it might have been Hughes best curve ball all year.

    4. Hughes said in the post-game he was pleased with his curve ball.

  119. REZ12 September 7th, 2011 at 12:50 pm

“Again, not accurate. I see Girardi all the time in his post game make realistic and critical comments about a pitcher’s stuff. “Burnett didn’t have his curveball tonight”, or Garcia’s splitter didn’t have it’s usual bite”.”

But that happens after they have bad starts and he has to rationalize it.

When a pitcher has even a decent start, Girardi raves about how their stuff was. Some guys like Leyland are critical even in wins, Girardi fluffs guys whenever they do decent enough.

I think Hughes should drop the CB and go with a Gyroball(Im sure its pronounce year-O-ball).

Didnt watch the game last night. Did Swisher go splish splashing during the rain delay.

Damn This post has got me hungry and its not even 10 yet.

  122. Irreverent Discourse September 7th, 2011 at 12:50 pm

WCYF – So Hughes can only throw his best curveball in the rain when his velocity is down? What sense does that make, and how is that useful?

Having your “best curveball” when you’ve been throwing BP curveballs all season is not an accomplishment to be proud of.

DRob did pitch last night. Soriano hasn’t pitched in two days, I think. Hard to remember, all these games are kinda running together and with the 2 a.m. end to last night’s game that I actually watched all the way through for some unknown reason, I feel half asleep today. LOL.

Is it fair to use last night’s outing as a marker of Phil’s progress/lack of progress? There was a 4-hour rain delay, and he was pitching in monsoon-like conditions.

Shouldn’t he maybe get a mulligan for this one?

And this isn’t meant to be oppositional or antagonistic. I’m genuinely posing a question.

    Hughes strikeouts last night:

    Reynolds – 31 K% – looking – 2nd inning – fastball, one curveball was fouled off
    Davis – 31 K%- Swinging – 2nd inning – all fastballs, 75mph curve in dirt
    Andino 20 K% – swinging – 3rd inning – 75mph curve
    Weiters – 19 K% – swinging – 4th inning – one curve in dirt for a ball, out on 84mph changeup
    Davis – 31 K% – swinging – 4th inning – curve in dirt, reached first

Those guys would strike out regardless of how “good” Hughes curveball is. He didn’t get one decent hitter with it.

  145. J. Alfred Prufrock September 7th, 2011 at 1:02 pm

MTU, gotcha. I probably shouldn’t even comment on the stuff. It’s tiring commenting on the tiring commentary, which is probably doubly tiring to read for others ;) . I just can’t stand it after awhile. Better to just change venues, I guess, when that happens.

    I miss Bojo.

AJ and Hughes have been inconsistent all season and until one or the other proves otherwise we’re allowed to point that out at every turn.

Hughes really had the chance to take that spot from AJ, I genuinely believe that. Privately, I think the organization wouldn’t have minded and were possibly hoping for that to happen. He’s just been too inconsistent with ALL of his pitches.

  149. bisonthrow September 7th, 2011 at 1:04 pm

    ID,

while it may not have been strike three what about all of the times he used it to get ahead or to set up another pitch that may have led to a batted out. I think anyone who actually watched the game realized that the pitch was working

ID, he got some real depth and late break on a few of those breaking balls. Others were more pedestrian, but he did throw a few good ones – which were likely the ones that gave Girardi encouragement.

ID – Bingo. He throws that curve against the Sox or Rangers… different story

  155. yankeefeminista September 7th, 2011 at 1:06 pm

Hughes threw some good curves and some bad curves. Velocity was a concern, especially for some that hung over the plate. Conditions weren’t optimum but a couple of curves were 70ish. Scary. Others even with low velo had nice bite. But he battled in spite of velo issues, and had pretty good command of a FB that sat lower than usual at 90-91 mostly. Still would like to see CB back up to high 70′s.

  156. J. Alfred Prufrock September 7th, 2011 at 1:09 pm
