I remember getting an email address in high school only to have my best friend tell me it was a ridiculous thing to have because electronic mail was a fade that would quickly go away. At the time, I actually thought he might be right.

Now here I am, in an airplane, on the Internet, checking my email and Twitter for Yankees updates that come second-by-second.

This Internet thing is really taking off.

Anyway, these are some of the things going on down in Baltimore, from our various friends who are in town for the day covering the makeup game.

The Yankees have scheduled one more doubleheader. They will play two games against the Rays on Sept. 21.

Still no rotation update cutting from six to five. I know, I’m surprised too.

Alex Rodriguez is just getting a half day today. Joe Girardi said playing A-Rod at DH has nothing to do with the thumb injury.

Girardi didn’t close the door on Dellin Betances getting a call-up. Girardi said he’s “just waiting on (Brian Cashman) and the decision that he makes.”

Girardi is optimistic that the Yankees are going to play today. The forecast isn’t great down there.

• If you’re looking for Twitter updates during the game, Peter Botte has the list of folks down there: Follow Botte, Mark Hale, Kimberley Martin, Ian Begley and Brendan Prunty. If you’re regularly getting Yankees news on Twitter, you’re probably following those five anyway.

I just looked at weather.com and it’s not supposed to rain in baltimore until after 4pm. From now until then it’s a 10% chance.

  2. JM September 8th, 2011 at 12:00 pm

That’s good….They need to get this game in and on time since they have to play out west tomorrow. This next couple of weeks is really going to be brutal.

  3. JM September 8th, 2011 at 12:00 pm

sheesh, these next couple of weeks ARE really going to be brutal….

  4. Captain Clutch September 8th, 2011 at 12:00 pm

Girardi is going to have to continue to give guys days off and stick with them. I thought he was doing that yesterday and then all of a sudden he brought them into the game. Robertson and Mo’s workload will also have to be watched very carefully since they have been playing a ton of close games. They need to win a blow out game very soon.

  5. Niblick September 8th, 2011 at 12:02 pm

There’s 21 games left in the regular season. What is the point of reducing the rotation from 6 to 5 at this point? None, other than the disruption and disturbance it will cause to the guy getting dropped. They’ll only need 4 in the playoffs; they can drop two then.

In this case, I think Binder Joe is doing the right thing.

Yea Id keep the 6 man until the last week or so of the season……the schedule is just too crazy and they need to skip Colon at some point.

    Welcome back Chad.

    re-post

It won’t make a difference in Burnett’s value if he’s left off the postseason roster. The Yankees will still need to eat considerable money when peddling him this winter.
It would be ridiculous if Burnett were on the roster and any of Noesi, Wade, or Ayala were left off.

from a Jack Curry column (Erin’s link)

The Yankees could have recalled Montero earlier this season, but they hesitated because of Jorge Posada. After the July 31 non-waiver trading deadline, the Yankees had internal conversations about summoning Montero. But, if the Yankees promoted Montero, Posada, the proud veteran who is in the final year of his contract, would have likely been the player who was sacrificed. Instead of tampering with Posada, the Yankees waited until the rosters expanded on Sept. 1. Since Montero’s arrival, Posada has had one at-bat.
    ///

To me, this feels like emotional blackmail. It also precludes another possibility that I, as a fan, am supposed to consider unthinkable I guess: getting rid of Cervelli.

The folks saying Montero didn’t “know the staff” aren’t using their heads. If he had come up earlier, he’d have learned the staff well enough by now. Of course he doesn’t know it NOW, because they brought him up way late.

I think either/or regarding Posada/Montero is weak. For one thing, I don’t see it as some great triumph that they merely delayed phasing Posada out. They could actually be taking advantage of BOTH their bats, if they had played this right.

God forbid we’d have had Montero acquainted with the staff so he could BUC and DH, and still had Posada’s lefty swing, especially in Yankee Stadium, in the mix IN THE SAME LINEUP during some playoff games….what happens if Martin gets hurt, or we have a 15-inning game or so and Martin is gassed for the next one?

Also, what’s the option if he goes down during a game and they need to replace him behind the plate and we’re in need of runs? We, put in Cervelli because Montero doesn’t “know” the staff and is green…..Whose fault is that??

Had they brought up Montero earlier, expressly to get a handle on the staff and some comfort behind the plate, they wouldn’t be so handcuffed with the DH spot and they’d have a BUC/Emergency catcher with a much greater ability to impact a game offensively than even their starter can……

What is more likely is, they were trying to deal Montero, couldn’t get a deal they liked, and once the deadline passed and rosters expanded, they finally delivered him…THAT’S what really happened; they weren’t comfortable with his catching all along, and failed to trade him…now he’s here, so of course, they’re going to take advantage of his bat…

So pardon me if I don’t laud their “wisdom” in bringing along Montero, whom they tried to trade once, TWICE, and surely a THIRD time….

With all these games in a row, 6-man makes sense.

    Bring up, Dealin’ Dellin, Cash!

Looking like Bryan Mitchell and SI Yankees could finally start their playoff series vs. the Cyclones in Brooklyn tonight. Go SI Yanks!

  16. Irreverent Discourse September 8th, 2011 at 12:18 pm

What’s the big deal? If Montero can actually catch, then he can catch one game in an emergency without making a fool of himself or a mess of the game.

If he needs to catch between now and then… he’s probably not ready.

yankfem, No. 50′s “fifth” day is tomorrow, so maybe we see him then.

I was hoping we’d see Brackman yesterday, but not sure when he last pitched. Maybe today…that would be something to look forward to…I haven’t seen him at all since Trenton, much less since he changed the positioning of his hand set. I am soooo rooting that this adjustment is lasting…wouldn’t it be fantastic if ABrack could be a viable later innings arm for us next season? Maybe also would push Joba back to the rotation, if ABrack could ‘replace’ him..

The Yanks haven’t had Montero catch in the majors because they prefer Martin and Cervelli there right now. What do people think, that the Yanks believe Montero is a better catcher than Cervelli but perversely refuse to catch Montero because (A) they “like” Cervelli, (B) they don’t want Montero to have a chance, or (C) they don’t want the team to be as good as possible?

Get serious. No one knows Montero’s catching abilities better than the Yanks. Give them a little credit.

Look for the simplest explanation. It’s usually the right one.

What do you hate about them?

  24. GreenBeret7 September 8th, 2011 at 12:23 pm

Since July 31st, the likelyhood that the Yanks would get any more offensive production with Montero in there than the Jones/Posada combination is pretty slim and that month was used to keep Montero catching instead of sitting half of the time.

Since the beginning of the 2007 season, Cano has played in 779 games. The only two players to appear in more were Prince Fielder (783) and Adrian Gonzalez (782). And both are first basemen not enduring the rigors of the middle infield. I believe that durability is the most underappreciated tool in the game because none of the five traditional tools –hitting, hitting with power, fielding, throwing and baserunning –mean anything if you can’t get on the field. I remember when I covered the Yankees as a beat writer and Danny Tartabull used to mention all the time how special his numbers were if you pro-rated them over 162 games. He did it as a brag. But it merely underscored how unreliable Tartabull was in getting on the field. He lacked the passion and/or sturdiness to be on the field daily. This was the crux, by the way, of GM Brian Cashman’s reasoning on calling Cano, not Jose Reyes, the best player in New York during the second series of this year’s Subway Series. Yes, Reyes was in the midst –at the moment –of an MVP-type season. But Cashman thought the title of best player in New York should be about more than just one good half season, but a reflection of a larger body of work and Cano wins there because his excellence is expressed day after day, month after month, year after year. Of course, to underscore the point, Reyes has broken down in the second half while Cano has kept playing and playing. It is one of the keys to the Yankees’ long-term success: They have been blessed by having superb players who also have been among the games most durable such as Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Mark Teixeira, Jorge Posada, Johnny Damon, Bobby Abreu, Mariano Rivera and Andy Pettitte just to name several of the many key, sturdy players.

WCYF, Still waiting for some stats to backup Martin or Cervelli being good defensive catchers.

    ************

I answered you. Comparative stats with other catchers could not be less relevant. Different teams, different pitchers with differing abilities to hold runners close or not and differing pitch selections that may be more difficult to handle.

Case in point. AJ Burnett leas the league in wild pitches. There are scores of balls in the dirt has Martin blocks successfully. Burnett is also abysmal at holding runners close.

I also have my eyes and the opinions of professionals who played the game like Flash, Singleton and Paulie.

Bottom line, Martin is very good and Cervelli is adequate. And with that tandem the Yankees are in first place.

the puzzling thing is that cervelli’s throwing is so bad and that the yankees don’t seem to be concerned about it.

i think a guy like ron washington ( or scoscia) is going to wait to expose the weakness until he really needs it and that’s in the post season .

i’m guessing that cervelli has developed a chronic sore arm that the yankees don’t want to advertise for obvious reasons.

if it was just a mechanical problem of throwing balls that tail towards right field that would be easy to fix.

i think girardi pairs him with sabathia because of sabathia being a lefty and theoretically being better at holding runners close. it at least minimizes the running threat.

There’s another possibility: they made a mistake, or harbor a bias for Cervelli that may not be justified.

Basically, they’ve removed all likelihood that Montero can replace Martin if it comes to that in the postseason. That means no Montero bat in away games in the WS, if we get there, outside of a one-and-done PH appearance….that may never come the the surface – sure hope not – but if it does, that’s a significant bat you can’t use much at all…

  40. Triple Short of a Cycle September 8th, 2011 at 12:37 pm

    WCYF,

Like what was pointed out before those announcers were touting Martin’s CS % when talking up his defense which in reality has been league average. Martin also has a boat load of errors.

At best he is average on defense but he is not above average and if you think cervelli is adequate I don’t know what to tell you.

Just curious what you thought of Posada’s ability behind the plate? They won with him being bad behind the plate so what does that prove?

doc iac – Don’t confuse the methodology of saber-metrics with the shortcomings of UZR. Single season UZR is very inconsistent and should never be looked at on it’s own. The commonly accepted sample size for UZR to be relevant is 3 years worth of data.

  43. djsunyc September 8th, 2011 at 12:41 pm

how often, in the thick of a pennant race, will a team like the yankees, with such a demanding fanbase, try to incorporate a rookie catcher that’s still developing with a staff that’s been injured (hughes), coming back from the unknown (colon, garcia) or just plain stinks (aj)?

Nice article by Sherman, about David Robertson.

Back in 2009, when Pete still covered the Yankees, he predicted that Robertson would develop into a real star. He was right on the mark.

posada threw runners out at a 28% rate for his career. and the only reason it was under 30% was his last few years when he was approaching 40.

it’s a myth that posada was a bad catcher.

it s not a myth that cervelli for whatever reason can’t throw for crap the past two years.

cervelli really needs to fix the throwing problems.

he will throw away a long mlb career as a back up catcher for a multitude of teams if he keeps throwing out runners in the 11-12% range.

Just finished reading The Last Boy. The book is a heartbreaker. I had such a mix of emotions while reading it. I felt a lot of resentment toward Leavy because at times I felt she was going out of her way to expose all the negatives she could find about the Mick. I didn’t see the need for it. I also found stretches of it extremely boring. Why she needed to track down minutiae about certain home runs, did they actually go such and such a distance? Calling in sabermatricians, people who lived in the area, searching years of records to find a person who supposedly found the ball in such and such a place when he didn’t actually find it there at all. Who really cares? But by the end of the book (extremely long, by the way) I saw the whole thing come full circle. And I cried – for who he was, who he was forced to be by his father, who he never became because of his own stubbornness – but mostly for who he is, one of the greatest players to ever play the game and gone much too soon.

“Chances are Cervelli isn’t going to play iin the playoffs, at least not in the first round.”

    crawdaddy-

i agree and hope cervelli never gets a inning of playoff action.

… and you got me thinking. i just took out the spare tire from my car because chances are i won’t need it for the playoffs either.

think of the gas i’ll be saving by getting rid of that extra dead weight :)
