Pendleton claimed by Houston

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Sep 09, 2011 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Designated for assignment earlier this week, reliever Lance Pendleton has been claimed by the Houston Astros.

This will be, essentially, Pendleton’s second stint with the Astros. He was with them in spring training after being selected in the Rule 5 draft, but Houston sent Pendleton back to the Yankees shortly before Opening Day and he was in New York by early April.

Perpetually overshadowed in the Yankees pitching-rich system, Pendleton had a 3.21 ERA as a big league long man. He had a 3.10 in Triple-A this season, and he has a 3.36 in his minor league career.

Good luck to Lance. He gave the Yanks a few decent innings but there is certainly no room for him here.

  2. m September 9th, 2011 at 2:21 pm

Good luck to Pendleton. Only thing is he’ll have to listen to Melancon *&$(& about how he was treated by the Yankees. j/k

  3. vinslol September 9th, 2011 at 2:21 pm

should be decent enough in the nl central/al west as a part time player, gl to the guy

Good luck to Sir Lancelot :)

  5. fantasygame101 September 9th, 2011 at 2:28 pm

this team has no room for him bec. they have proctor…

  6. Jerkface September 9th, 2011 at 2:31 pm

this team has no room for him bec. they have proctor…

Not really, they would DFA proctor just as fast. Pendleton isnt a huge loss, I hope he can find a spot in houston. I believe he is from there and was excited to have been claimed by them originally.

  7. m September 9th, 2011 at 2:36 pm

That’s right, Pendleton got to pitch in front of his family in Texas. Good for him.

US Open is on CBS right now. Isner is down 2 sets to none, but is up a break on Murray in the 3rd.

  8. m September 9th, 2011 at 2:37 pm

Sorry, that was vague. Pendleton got to pitch with the Yankees in Texas. Of course, he’ll be pitching there all the time now. :P

jerkface…. Proctor should not even be with this team. I would rather have pendleton blowing away games than proctor. If they think proctor has a chance to be in the playoff and they are auditioning him, I am already glad bec. he is not good so far and will not hurt the team in the playoff.

  11. Jerkface September 9th, 2011 at 2:46 pm

Proctor is not auditioning for the playoffs, and neither would pendleton.

  12. WyoYankee September 9th, 2011 at 2:50 pm

Pendleton always kept getting better. I think he is a loss for Yanks. Shame, just a shame he’s gone. Class guy too. Good luck Lance.

  13. UnKnown September 9th, 2011 at 2:50 pm

Mike Axisa was commenting in a chat on RAB that Montero might end up getting too many at bats this year to be eligible for the ROY next year. That would stink.

    Any truth to this?

Burress is a bitter man. He lashes out at Coughlin and Manning. I understand what he’s feeling, but I’m still not sensing much accountability. He shoots himself in the leg and he wanted sympathy from the team.

He did a dumb thing, and Coughlin was right. Burress was lucky that he didn’t kill anyone.

  16. Rob M September 9th, 2011 at 3:02 pm

@UnKnown, no he can’t possibly lose his rookie status for next year:

He did not accumulate ANY at-bats or days on active roster during the period of 25-player limit (before Sept. 1). See MLB rule below

    Determining rookie status:
A player shall be considered a rookie unless, during a previous season or seasons, he has (a) exceeded 130 at-bats or 50 innings pitched in the Major Leagues; or (b) accumulated more than 45 days on the active roster of a Major League club or clubs during the period of 25-player limit (excluding time in the military service and time on the disabled list).

    http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/officia.....ations.jsp

  17. GreenBeret7 September 9th, 2011 at 3:03 pm

Montero isn’t going to get 100 more at bats this year. There isn’t enough games left

  18. Rob M September 9th, 2011 at 3:03 pm

Addendum: he could theoretically lose status if he surpasses 130 ABS, but he only has 17 so far.

  19. GreenBeret7 September 9th, 2011 at 3:10 pm

If the Yankees felt they needed another soft tossing right handed swing man/spot starter, they’ve still got Craig Heyser. Pendleton did pretty well, but, he wasn’t really needed. Whether they keep Proctor or not is beside the point.

  20. Kelvin September 9th, 2011 at 3:13 pm

    Guys,

Montero will qualify for MVP tho ;)

  21. m September 9th, 2011 at 3:14 pm

Hard to see Montero not qualifying given that he’s a September callup.

I know some lamented the fact that the Yankees were out of town this weekend, but given the weather it’s a good thing they are.

If you were hiding under a rock this week, here’s a nostalgic look at the Twin Towers in the movies:

  23. LGY September 9th, 2011 at 3:23 pm

Even if Montero started every game for the rest of the season he would still qualify as a rookie next year.

Would it affect Montero’s arb clock/Super Two/whatever status if he played himself onto to post-season roster this year?

  29. Jerkface September 9th, 2011 at 3:37 pm

No I dont think so, Nick

  34. Nick in SF September 9th, 2011 at 3:44 pm

Thank you, Jerkface and WYH. So his clock would have started ticking if they had brought him up last month, but now he can beast through October without accumulating any service time?

    Sweet.

  35. LGY September 9th, 2011 at 3:48 pm

    Nick

Once Super Two passed earlier this season the remaining part of 2011 just became basically free service time with Montero (presuming he’s with the team the whole 2012 season)

    Erin,

That’s a funny one. I wish Burress well, but he might need to do some more introspection.

  39. Irreverent Discourse September 9th, 2011 at 4:15 pm

I wouldn’t read too much into this Burress nonsense. The original article/interview that today’s “news” is referring to is very benign, and he doesn’t really come across as grasping for attention. He answered some very pointed questions honestly.

  40. m September 9th, 2011 at 4:23 pm

Nobody said he’s looking for attention, but at least one writer has said enough of the pity party.

Here’s one sign that he just might not get it, like did he really say that?:

(His thoughts after the Coughlin meeting): “Man, we’re paid too much to be treated like kids. He doesn’t realize that we’re grown men and actually have kids of our own.”

    baseball is on the team/players.

“Orville described my game as awe-inspiring….amazing what that kid can do with a golf club. He had other words, too, but, I don’t like to brag.”

for those of you who don’t know , it is absolutely true that after giving gb7 golf lessons while he orville was in the military, that orville went on to win the 1969 us open.

what is not common knowledge is that orville is quoted by reliable sources saying about his time teaching gb7, ” if it were not for him, i would not have won the us open. i had never before seen in one player all the golf faults known to man and then some . i basically did everything the opposite of what i saw in this young soldier. ”

so there you are. if it wasn’t for gb7 orville moody would have never won the us open.

Kate, words like, “That kid is on a different planet than the rest of us”, and, “I’ve found a sponsor to pay his expenses on a world tour”, and “watching him play golf only discourages others to try competing with that”….or, words to that affect.

I got home a little bit ago, after a long day. Tough day.

I found that my dog, who is dying of cancer, had thrown up in my dining room.

So, I’ve cleaned up that mess, and poured myself a good Scotch, while nibbling on some snacks, while making dinner for myself and mrs. joe (she’s still at the office).

    Thank you.

  95. GreenBeret7 September 9th, 2011 at 6:17 pm

Ackley is the 2nd baseman for Seattle. Been up for about half of the season, little power, little run production, not a lot of steals. Last I looked, he was hitting about .295 and not a lot of walks. He’s not even the best hitting rookie on his own team. Carp is doing better.

    Ackley has had 301 PAs with a .298/.375/.468 139 OPS+.

Does anyone have any good news to offer to counteract it ?

Life just sucks sometimes, eh ?

    :(

Nevermind Carp is a rookie. I was looking at the wrong thing.

Ackley still has been better and in general extremely impressive.

    GB7,
Be thankful for the banter. It’ll end soon, and you and randy discussing your golf game has been part of it, O course, I thought the “Orville” you were talking about was Wright.

No, it wasn’t Orville and wilbur. You’re getting as snarky as the rest of these people on here. Good job and keep it up, Tom. You’ll soon pick up the rest of our good habits.

My condolences to JCPD on the loss of his mother.

Joe-Sorry to hear about your dog’s illness.

MTU Maybe some shots of the canyons would perk everyone up!

Ackely can rake…..I haven’t disowned him yet as the Mariners aren’t good enough to care about.

    Bartender.

    Give me a double.

    DocTodd-

Seems that the writers consider Pedroia, Ortiz, Gonzalez, and Ellsbury for the MVP. If you have that many MVP candidates on one team than you have no MVP!!!

Suppose Montero played every game for the rest of the regular season and hit incredibly well. Is there any rule that would prevent him from being eligible to win ROY in 2011 AND in 2012?

    YT-

I did that this morning before all hell broke loose.

    You musta missed it.

The morning started off normally enough then wham !

    The you-know-what hit the fan.

MTU, My three-legged cat left a mouse on my chair this morning, in thanks for a special treat I made for her last night. I guess that’s a good thing, but at 4:45 AM, I can’t say I was as grateful as I should have been.

You’re right, the blog has been subdued all day. JCPD and Joe, best wishes going forward, and let’s go Yanks.

Ackley’s ops+ is 10th in the AL just behind Ellsbury and higher than Cano, Pedroia and a few other big names…surprisingly.

He looks like a great hitter.

Carp has bounced back and forth a lil bit the last 3yrs and was originally with the mets. He’s also an older ( 25-26 ) player whose spent 5-6 years in the minors whereas Ackley was the 3rd pick in last years draft and spent about a year and a half in the minors.

Next years AL ROY race should be a great one headed up by Jesus and Mike Trout of the Angels

I didn’t see the game yesterday, but after looking at the boxscore, realized that the Yankees were no-hit the last 6 innings finishing with 6 hits. Hope they break out on this road trip against 4 of the best pitchers in a row in the AL-Weaver, Haren,Santana and Hernandez.

    YT/Tom-

I’m always glad to contribute some photos but right now I’m afraid I’ll jinx somebody else.

Cat’s do sometimes offer presents. That is a little early to share though.

    :(

    MTU-

I’ll have to look for your photos.

ROY this year will probably be Jeremy Hellickson with SuperNova a close second.

    YT-

I’m not so sure about that.

I posted them on the early morning thread.
