Yankees lose in Anaheim
The Yankees thin bullpen couldn’t carry tonight’s game into extra-innings, and the Angels walked off with a 2-1 win on a sac fly off Luis Ayala. Jesus Montero’s solo home run — his third in as many games — was the Yankees only run against Angels ace Jered Weaver. They stayed in the game because Bartolo Colon was nearly as good. He scattered six hits through seven innings, allowing the Angels only run on Howie Kendrick’s two-out single in the fifth.

The Yankees and Girardi are lucky that the Red Sox have lost 4/5 of their pitching staff. For now.
Weaver and his 6.67 ERA since August 12th. The Yankees were his elixir back to Cy Young form, apparently.
Positives:
1) Boston lost
2) Montero homered off Weaver
3) Mo gets 3 days of rest
4) Colon pitched great
But at least we got to see how Laffey would respond in a tight game. That was definitely worth the loss.
If I was Girardi I would sit everyone tomorrow and play the B lineup. Give them all 1 full day off and come back on Sunday. The offense being exhausted is killing the bullpen and costing them runs from bad defense. Wade, Robertson and Mo can’t pitch every night and the offense not scoring any runs is forcing Joey binder to use the awful part of the bullpen.
Colon deserved a win tonight.
I don’t understand why Girardi keeps putting his worst bullpen pitchers in the late innings of a tie game. It’s like asking to be walked off.
CC,
Well, if it’s not going to play to win anyway, why not just play a B lineup all the way? Sounds reasonable to me.
Yankee shortstops have cost the Yankees three games with careless errors.
Pena vs the Mets, Nunez vs the Orioles, and now Jeter tonight.
Colon was fantastic. He surely deserved at least 2 runs – but the pitiful effort from the offense robbed him of a win.
Yeah it kind of defeats the purpose of trying to win if you’re going to throw Aaron Laffey into the game with it tied and on the line.
Might as well have rested majority of the team in a game you’re going to do that.
Niblick says: September 10, 2011 at 12:49 am This, my friends, is what the Yanks are going to be like in the playoffs –completely shut down by good pitching, with a bullpen ready to puke away the games in the last inning.
—–+
Why do you think that’s the way they will be in the playoffs?
With the expansion of the roster to 40 men you’d think there’d be a better option in the pen than Aaron Freaking Laffey. Hell, Logan would have been a better choice, and that ain’t saying much.
Losing games with Ayala, Laffey and Proctor on the mound. How exciting…
FYI watch him sit montero tom
Weaver has one of the worst ERA’s in baseball over the last month, and of course they made him look like Ron Guidry tonight.
Tampa may be in the playoffs yet
Someone explain y he punts these games? Proctor? Laffey? Ayala? Get Hughes innthe pen n add a legit power arm to the back 3.
Tough loss, another game tomorrow with CC going for a W to break the string.
There wasn’t much to go to. SO/Boone has been a bit shaky lately, needs a couple of days off to figure it out.
The problem is the close games & not giving our stud bp a rest. And the errors. Nunez lost the other game, his multiple errors resulting in 4 runs & burned the bp. And jeter’s error causing 1 run, Nunez gets caught stealing, though the A-rod/Teix combo made a couple of good plays.
Oh well.
Let me guess Joey binder will sit Montero tomorrow because a righty is on the mound
What total BS. Once again, Chad seems to have swallowed the Yankees excuses, hook, line and sinker. How can you call it a thin bullpen when there are 19 pitchers on the active roster? How many do you think they need, Chad? 20? 21? What’s the magic number? It’s not the thinness of the bullpen, it’s the manager’s unwillingness to use them properly.
If Hughes is going to be in the pen in oct anyway get him there now
no writer will aks girardi any questions about his choices late in the game…
they will talk about jesus and colon.
not 1 question on why griardi is a moron…………aaron laffey to trun callaspo around to his slightly stronger side…….
nunez doing a gardner and not running early in th ecount.. classic stupidity. shocker called a pitch out on a 0 and 2 count.. what a suprise
“Let me guess Joey binder will sit Montero tomorrow because a righty is on the mound”
Well, a righty was on the mound tonight too… and a better one than either of the next 2
I’d rather lose seeing betances or kontos or brackman.
2010 rerun
Girardi’s hands are kind of tied considering how many close games they have played. Wade was used 4 out of 5 games, he already overuses Robertson, Soriano is a drama queen, Logan sucks anyway.
Not many places he can turn, especially if they have to play these 1-run games everynight like they are the SF Giants.
Once the offense gets its head out of its @#$#, then hopefully the bullpen improves.
I wonder if Pendelton would have done better
chad is kontos tired? how about Noesi? the guy is 23…
tired arms. girardi BS… not to tired to pitch ayala a ton recently.
another giveaway game.
aaron friggin laffey to tru nacallaspo around to his stronger side.. THE LOGIC IS????????????????????
ASK AWAY CHAD i A MWAITING…….
Montero ought to get a run of games here, at least that’s what I’m hoping. The team is running on fumes lately and but that’s when an influx of youth and talent can help out, like Montero did tonight. I’d strongly consider Betances when the games are close.
I get trying out Laffey as a loogy but AC is a switch hitter!!!!?!?!
more meaningless nonsense questions for binder boy from kim dope jones……….
nunez staying nailed to first for 4 pitches the rationale on that is ???????????????????????????????????????????????????
I love Girardi reliving 2010.
That should just about do it for the SF Giants this year, Kershaw beats Lincecum which is the final nail to their playoff hopes.
can’t win if you can’t hit, and practically the entire lineup is slumping at the same time.
Granderson: 3 for his last 24, hitting .208 in September
Teixeira: 1 extra base hit in his last 9 games
ARod: .185 in his last 8 games
Cano: .214 with 2 extra base hits in his last 8 games
Swisher: 3 for his last 28, 1 extra base hit
Gardner: 1 for his last 14
Throwing that pitch out on the first pitch was about the stupidest move Girardi could have called. Scoscia wouldn’t ever do that. A runner likes to at least see one pitch to get an idea of timing the run.
Girardi is not a bad bullpen manager, but he is no great shakes as a game manager.
laffey is as much as a LOOGy as Boone logan is….
arod another big game…. grandy in the ice box. tex the usual crap……
now the win game pablem… BULL.
Make no mistake, this loss was on the offense. You can’t score one run and expect that to hold up against even the worst of teams, much less the Angels.
Yep, this is beginning to look like 2010. Does Binder really think the Yanks are in a better position as the wild card? It’s nonsense.
yanks offensively have done nothing in 3 games. they lsot 2 games to the O’s scoring 4 runs in each………………………..
this team is homerun or bust. not a formula for success when it matter but anyway aj has great stuff…………………………
Funny how there’s no more obnoxious ‘Who’s Joba’ posts anymore.
Having Jobber would be huge right now.
What happened to the slacker LOOGY’s Marte and Feliciano?
Cashman takes a great deal of blame for the pen issues. To get to September 9th having to depend on Ayala, Wade, Proctor, Logan and Laffey is just criminal negligence. Scott Proctor? Are you bleepin’ kidding me?
It’s Cashman’s job to put players on this roster that can win in a pennant race – and in the post season. He has not.
The good: Montero
The bad: The Yankees
The ugly: 3 straight last inning losses.
feliciano is done for the year and probably his yankee career.
the yanks have not had a good lefty pen guy forever…………..
kim jones never asks any real questions..
russel martin hitting 6th. the guy is hitting 235, about 14 point lower then $180 mill tex…..
hey I think granderson just struck out. wow, tex just pop flied out to short. that never happens………..
From Girardi’s response it didn’t sound like Swisher’s mri came back good
This sputtering offense is a real issue now.
arod is a wreck. what 7 more years of his act. 105 games will be all he plays again this year. his #’s are far from elite when he plays.
what has that clown done all year???? oopss complaining about arod is not allowed. poor OLD arod. key word being old…………
If Girardi sits Montero at all he should be fired. There is no way any other player on this team is better equipped to DH right now before him. And that includes A-Rod.
Heck of a pitcher’s duel by Weaver and Colon. That was great. But what came after that was really a downer.
Our supposed great bullpen has come down to Robertson, Mo and dust. Laffey, Ayala and the likes are earning a trip out of the postseason roster. They don’t deserve it and time and again prove to fail in tight situations. This isn’t only one game, but a tendency.
Joe Giardi seems to believe he is playing with house money and is leading the division by 12.5 instead of 2.5. He can say he is trying to win games, but if the two games before this were suspicious, this one is obvious: Girardi let it slip away. You are really telling me our best option were those two? If your excuse was the pen was taxed, well those two have been in those games too and failed. At least try something else. If you loe with Brackman, Kontos and Dellin, nobody will cry that it should’ve been Laffey an Ayala.
Another missed opportunity in a one run loss. Our record looks pretty bad in those, especially on the road. We can’t expect the Sox to keep losing. Thats bad strategy.
You’re right – Arod has had a bad season. Is there any reason to believe that he’ll be able to turn it around?
Not a great start to this 10 game road trip.
4-9 in extra inning games.
18-20 in one run games.
That ain’t good.
This might be the postseason preview when they face top ace.
The division champ should be decided in the final sux series. Since sux holds the tiebreak and I don’t expect sux sweep them again in YS, Yanks have to have at least 2 games lead into that series.
Yankee offense sports .237 BA over the last 2 weeks. Yikes.
If Girardi sits Montero at all he should be fired.

Agree. It seems like Girardi and Cash want to work him in slowly because they didn’t know how he would handle everything. But he has shown that he is fine and he isn’t overwelmed at all from being in the majors. He has been very impressive as far as he looks like he has a plan at the plate.
Any word on Swisher?
If they are going to loss, loss with kontos, phelps, etc, not with proctor, laffey or any veterans. At least they can the exposure and learns from them.
Expanded roster should not make the team loss but help wins. But with this expanded roster, girardi is finding more ways to loss.

No Jorge ? ? ?
No Jorge
What about Jorge?
Pitcher with a dead arm; hitters with dead bats; manager with a dead brain. It all fits.

Funny!
Oysters for everyone!
Really, what’s the point of the call-ups if you’ll treat this team like a short-handed 25 men. And if this means we will see this guys in the postseason, then we aren’t as serious about winning as I thought, and I don’t really think thats the case.
Vblade,
I share the same concern. Their 1 run record is now 18-21. Only Texas has a worse record in 1-run games among all possible playoff teams.
They have to gain confidence quickly in these playoff type games quickly. They will not be able to hit multiple HRs and beat teams 8-5 every game in the playoffs.
Colon game a great account of himself.
The absence of any meaningful offense left the defense with no margin.
CC is up tomorrow as the Ace and losing streak stopper.
Go CC!!
Go Yanks!!
That substitution of A-Rod for Nunez and then him being thrown out. Man, Im really disliking Nunez. Nothing but bad play from him lately.

Interestingly enough, last season, the Yankees played 9 playoff games and only one was decided by one run – Game 1 at Texas – and the Yankees won that one.
Unfortunately, they lost by at least 5 runs in each of the 4 losses to Texas and didn’t score more than 3 runs in any of them.
This team will only go as far as their “high powered” offense will take them.
I get to go see CC tomorrow. Oh boy, oh boy ! ! !
Got nothin’ against laffey but he’s kinda proven he can’t get anyone out when it matters, he’s the royce ring of 2011 – give it up, i’d rather see a brackman debut with 7 wild pitches from nerves than us throw out a guy we know doesn’t have the stuff to match up in october ;/
Well at least Ayala won’t be available tomorrow after throwing 3 days in a row.
Also, I am with Blake. Give Betances a shot. It can’t hurt. Girardi is in “full throw away games in September mode.” Might as well give the kid a shot. Brackman too for that matter.
Also because Callaspo was going to turn around and bat right handed anyways, why not have Logan face him because Logan has actually fared better of late against righties than lefties.
Free KBB!!
Free Kontos, Brackman and Betances!!
And free Montero for consecutive games!
The 2 moves I’ll never be able to understand:
1) Pinch running for A-Rod in a tie game with the major league leader in extra base hits at the dish. If Cano runs into one it doesn’t matter where the runner is on the basepaths. And you lose your cleanup hitter.
2) Pitching Robertson in the 8th but then Laffey in the 9th…what??? If you’re actually trying to go all out and win the game you go down with your best guys. And if you aren’t that bothered then you don’t waste Robertson and you pitch one of the young callups in the 8th and 9th.
