Montero will “probably” catch tomorrow

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Sep 11, 2011 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

X-rays are negative on Russell Martin’s thumb, but Joe Girardi said he’ll be out a day or two. Girardi also doesn’t want Jorge Posada to catch back to back games.

“Montero will probably catch (tomorrow),” Girardi said.

Francisco Cervelli is going back to New York for tests and Girardi indicated that a catcher will likely be called up. He hinted at Austin Romine.

Mitre’s first start in place of injured Andy Pettitte surely was lousy enough to make the Yankees think harder about pulling the trigger, although a Yankee person insisted that while GM Brian Cashman has been talking to the Diamondbacks about Haren, it didn’t mean he was pushing to make a deal.

Likewise, a player agent close to the situation said Saturday he believed there is no urgency on Cashman’s part to get a deal done.

“This isn’t Cliff Lee,” the person said. “The sense I get is that for it to happen, everything would have to be on (Cashman’s) terms.”

Considering how many players have legit injury issues like Swisher, Martin, Cervelli, Jones, ARod, etc. Girardi has to play his regulars or put ST lineups out there – guys can’t complain about being tired when half of the regulars are nursing legit injuries.

  4. Captain Clutch September 11th, 2011 at 12:23 am

So Montero and Romine will be the Yankees catchers for the next couple of days. Ummm who catches nut job AJ? They definitely can’t have one of the rookies catch him.

  5. lil m September 11th, 2011 at 12:25 am

    Wow!!

  6. stuart a September 11th, 2011 at 12:25 am

so cervelli, jones and martin are critical players.

45 days ago people said cervelli was the worst backup catcher in baseball.

andruw jones should only play against lefties.

how about getting on the guys who make the real coin!!!!!!!!!!!!!

this guy names Mark. He is not hurt, he is not that old, he makes about $18 mill per. he also stinks. he is hitting 248 or so… get mad at him don’t lament your 4th outfielder being slightly hurt.

how about the golden boy arod. his thumb is hurting him!!!his act is hurting the team… he is a diva.. he is soft and the most overpaid player in baseball this side of vernon wells and barry zito………….

  7. stuart a September 11th, 2011 at 12:26 am

how about CC pitching into the 8th and dominating…

cc has been OK the last 5 to 7 starts. he has not been dominating for at least 1 month……….

  8. stuart a September 11th, 2011 at 12:28 am

the reliever not available bull is just not true.

why soriano was not available tonight? how about robertson or wade.. wade was off yesterday….

girardi is doing his routine he does at the end of the year. did the same thing in 09, hope they have the same success also…….

  9. Captain Clutch September 11th, 2011 at 12:29 am

He can’t give them all a day off. Then people will kill him for putting ST lineups out there and not playing to win.
    —————

I would rather he gives up one game instead of throwing them out there and it costing them the next 4 games. They have already lost 4 games because they are playing on fumes.

One of those nights where you can go to bed early – that is goign to be ugly, long, and painful.

Hughes-King Felix on Monday is probably another one of those games.

Unless the offense decides to come out of hibernation, the rest of this trip is going to be rough.

I’m glad to see Joba is taking this losing streak as hard as the rest of us.

  12. Niki September 11th, 2011 at 12:36 am

I’m concerned about Cervelli. Hope he’s going to be ok.

  13. fantasygame101 September 11th, 2011 at 12:37 am

Montero catching, a must see game…

  14. JT September 11th, 2011 at 12:37 am

The Angels on a roll, in Anaheim, pushing for a playoff spot. Talk about baptism by fire for Jesus.

  15. fantasygame101 September 11th, 2011 at 12:39 am

If montero catches freddy against the angels. A lot of his catching ability will be tested like blocking the plate, throwing out runners.

  16. GreenBeret7 September 11th, 2011 at 12:40 am

Romine lives about 20 minutes away and although not ideal, money says he’s in the clubhouse tomorrow and activated before the game. Somebody gets dropped off of the 40 man roster. My guess is either Steve Garrison or Kevin Whelan

“The Angels on a roll, in Anaheim, pushing for a playoff spot. Talk about baptism by fire for Jesus.”

I think this could probably be interesting, in a very positive way. AJ could end up being the hero.

It’s too bad that the Angels are playing for their lives right now. They’re probably three times above their ability level, and total adrenaline. Not what the exhausted Yanks need right now.

    yanks 27 September 11th, 2011 at 12:31 am

Simple, skip AJ this time and save us the aggravation.

  19. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 11th, 2011 at 12:42 am

I thought someone said AJ was pitching tomorrow.

    Well, doesn’t matter who’s pitching. Tomorrow’s a new day.

    GO YANKS!

  20. Yankees_Fan September 11th, 2011 at 12:43 am

Its time for Select the Yankees Lineup, brought to you by BenGay and 5 Hour Energy Drink.

Pick tomorrow’s lineup considering the injured, tired and mentally challenged (Nunez).

Hint of the night: Montero at C.

  21. fantasygame101 September 11th, 2011 at 12:43 am

If AJ pitches, I think posada should catch.. Posada will not tolerate AJ.

  22. BIG AL September 11th, 2011 at 12:44 am

Will all those that are giving up on the Yankees, have no faith they’re going to win the division, Please stand up, and get the hell out of here.

Plain and simply, I’m just sick of the whinners and fair weather fans that can only be positive when the team is winning and on a roll.

    Good night!

  23. yanks 27 September 11th, 2011 at 12:45 am

It is amusing how they are not even considering Jorge catching.

  24. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 11th, 2011 at 12:46 am

Big Al, the worst part is the total lack of empathy about the current situation and some posters still acting like disgruntled and demanding children in the face of it. It’s not like everyone’s healthy and the Yanks have had lots of days off and no travel whatsoever.

  25. GreenBeret7 September 11th, 2011 at 12:46 am

Looks like the joint is filled up with so-called “Yankee fans” aka trolls that have slithered in under the woodwork, Quick!!! Somebody call Orkin to stamp out the roaches..

  26. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 11th, 2011 at 12:48 am

“It is amusing how they are not even considering Jorge catching.”

I think the word is “understandable.” He never caught a day game after a night game, and he hasn’t caught all season except for this game. He definitely is not in shape to be catching continual games.

  27. BIG AL September 11th, 2011 at 12:49 am

    trisha -

Got to go, but you and GB7 hit it right on the head.

GB – you are being so kind calling those slime balls roaches, LOL. :)

  28. Tyler September 11th, 2011 at 12:49 am

You could have made a lot of money on a bet that Montero and Romine would be the 2 Yankees catchers active this season. Maybe in about 2 years that seemed plausible…

Big Al, going too. GB will too if he’s smart. Then the complaining faction can have the entire forum to themselves…

  31. GreenBeret7 September 11th, 2011 at 12:52 am

I think that if either Molina or Gil were closer than 2000 miles, they would have gotten the call to keep from adding Romine a year early.

Dude, you can pissed that A-Rod’s injured, but that’s just too much.

  33. J. Alfred Prufrock September 11th, 2011 at 12:56 am

Why does anyone bother to respond to these people. They can’t even put a sentence together. Instead of insulting them, point them to a remedial class.

  34. GreenBeret7 September 11th, 2011 at 12:58 am

Posada is gonna be sore tomorrow…especially his legs.

How does a guy with 37 IP for the season get dead arm?

  36. I Am Winning September 11th, 2011 at 1:04 am

Other than Jesus Montero and David Robertson who isn’t struggling right now? It extremely frustrating and we’re several games ahead. Imagine the intensity if the Red Sox weren’t playing worse than us. Unbelievable right now.

  37. JimK September 11th, 2011 at 1:06 am

Maybe CC’s average outings are because of the extra rest. I have not checked to see if he is going every 5th day but it does seem like he has not been the same since the Yankees went with the ridiculous 6 man rotation.

  38. TD213 September 11th, 2011 at 1:11 am

We need Boston to take one of the these games against Tampa, otherwise things will get wayy too close for comfort

  39. Pat M. September 11th, 2011 at 1:22 am

Another trip to Angel Stadium, another ride home with a loss……I just don’t understand how these Little Leaguers from Disneyland just take it to The Bronx Bombers, year after year…….Hip Hip Jorge !!!!! Standing O’s for the Yankee HOF catcher in 2030

  40. UnKnown September 11th, 2011 at 1:27 am

I will take Tampa sweeping the Sux tomorrow. No need to worry about holding on to the Wild Card when your winning the division. Sux lose they can’t gain ground on New York’s lead in the division.

  41. JM September 11th, 2011 at 1:42 am

Lester, just about the Sox’ only legitimate starter at this point, is going Sunday. It would be nice to beat the Halos and snap out of the doldrums as chances are, eventually, even the Sox will snap out of theirs….
