Hmmmm…wonder how long I’ll be able to make it tonight. I hate west coast games on weekdays. :x

  2. Yankee Trader September 12th, 2011 at 12:15 pm

Although Tuesday and Wednesdays games are at night, both are against lefties, pitchers the Yankees have beaten with regularity.

The Red Sox are facing the best Blue Jays starting pitchers while the Yankees, per mlb.com are scheduled to face next weekend:
Brett Cecil-owned this lefty last time
    Henderson Alvarez-rookie righty 1-2
Dustin McGowan- called up and hit hard by RS, then the Orioles

  3. blake September 12th, 2011 at 12:15 pm

I like WC games because I can watch in peace because everyone is i’m the bed by then…..but can’t make it to the end. 8:30 starts would be great :)

  4. bisonthrow September 12th, 2011 at 12:15 pm

We need 2/3 this series. With the match ups Boston has the yanks could really distance themselves. Tampa’s match up works in their favor playing the Os and id very much so like to keep our distance from them

  5. pkyankfan69 September 12th, 2011 at 12:16 pm

    Hughes – King Felix — Advantage M’s
    Burnett – Furbush — Push
Nova – Vargas — Advantage Yanks

Hopefully get 2 out of 3. Yanks will light up Vargas yet again… If they could steal tonights game they would be set up for a nice series.

    Erin-

Missed Curb but saw the FINALE of Entourage which was dissapointing except for the post show phone call Ari received while in Italy.

  7. blake September 12th, 2011 at 12:17 pm

2 of 3 should be doable….Felix has lost 11 times this year…..time to.figure out a way to beat him.

  8. Erin September 12th, 2011 at 12:19 pm

YT- CYE was awesome!!! Hilarious, as usual. Michael J. Fox was in it which was really cool. I can’t believe it was the season finale already. It seems like it just started.

“It was reported this morning the White Sox wore green hats Saturday night to commemorate half way to St. Patrick’s Day. No problem with uniformity then because the caps were made by New Era.”

Wait wait wait… You’re serious, pat?! A special ‘half way to St Patrick’s Day’ hat?! Wow. Before I was just annoyed by MLB, now I’m legitimately furious.

  10. Yankee Trader September 12th, 2011 at 12:20 pm

Looks like the playoff picture is pretty much settled except for the AL West winner and the wild card as well as the wild card in the NL, which most likely will be the Braves, if they’re bullpen doesn’t fade.

“How do you tell a player like Romine that we like Montero’s bat too much to risk injury, and you’re not as good so it’s ok for you to be the catcher because you’re expendable?”

there you go again showing why they kept throwing you off planes. you’re always saying things other people are too polite to say.

Ari’s phone call was a perfect set-up for the movie to follow. What will Ari do.

I liked the ending, tied up loose ends, friendship and love triumphed over greed. Nicely done.

    Blake-

If the Yankees want to get to the WS they’ll have to go through some very tough righties, so hopefully Tex can improve his BA against righties enough to warrant hitting him 3rd.

  14. blake September 12th, 2011 at 12:26 pm

Duquette said that Ventura, Piazza, and Leiter etc…..basically told MLB 10 years ago that if they didn’t want them to wear the hats they’d have to come down on the field and pull them off their heads…….

  15. blake September 12th, 2011 at 12:27 pm

    Trader,

Yea….or hopefully he can hit some big homers.

  16. Erin September 12th, 2011 at 12:28 pm

Shame- that “halfway to St. Patrick’s Day” thing is ridiculous. Seriously? What’s next-halfway ’til Valentine’s Day? Pink hats on August 14th? It reminds me of elementray school where all of us summer birthdays got to celebrate at the 6 month mark. Nobody really bought into it even as kids. LOL

  17. blake September 12th, 2011 at 12:29 pm

The Mets should have called MLBs bluff and wore the hats…..MLB would have looked terrible if they fined a team for honoring 9/11 in that way…… Torre of all people should have understood the significance of what they were wanting to do.

  18. Shame Spencer September 12th, 2011 at 12:30 pm

blake – I really wish they would’ve done that this time around and forced MLB to punish them and take a PR hit.

Someone in the paper wrote that a lot of the players on the Mets now were in high school or younger when the Towers were hit, so their passion for it is understandably more tempered than that of Franco, Piazza, etc, at the time, but I still wish someone in that locker room would’ve said “I’d like to see them try” when faced with an MLB penalty.

  19. blake September 12th, 2011 at 12:34 pm

    Shame,

I think MLB would have backed off…….they would have looked incredibly insensitive if they tried to fine for that……and my guess is that it would have become a huge huge story if they did it.

Felix Hernandez vs the Yankee batters:

Swisher has 4 homers off him. Hopefully he’s at close to, or at, 100% and playing tonight.

It’s more of a “breach of contract” issue if MLB allowshats from a rival manufacturer.

The smart thing for MLB to have done was work with new ERA at the start of the season to design a commemorative 9/11 hat for each team. they could then be signed and auctioned off for Memorial or survivor’s fund.

  23. blake September 12th, 2011 at 12:42 pm

A caller just said that the Mets were going to where the hats but that MLB came and took them from the clubhouse guys……don’t knownif that’s true or not.

They could have easily had New Era make some hats for them to wear……

  24. blake September 12th, 2011 at 12:43 pm

    Wear the hats *

  25. bisonthrow September 12th, 2011 at 12:44 pm

I think the lineup for tonight will be quite interesting

    Jeter
    Granderson
    Tex
    Cano
    Montero
    Jones
    Chavez/Nunez
    Romine
    Gardner

  26. upstate kate September 12th, 2011 at 12:44 pm

It was interesting to listen to Leiter’s rememberances of 9/11, both on yesterday’s broadcast and on the YES 9/11 show. He was pitching for the Mets at the time, and had decided to take his little girl to school for her first day of 1st grade. Leiter had actually boarded a plane bound for Pittsburgh where he was scheduled to pitch that night when they cancelled the flight. Leiter ended up calling Kay and spending time w/ him until he could safely return to his family.

If CC Sabathia is to pitch on Friday (in Toronto) he, and one or two other players should be flown ahead to Toronto on Tuesday to be allowed a couple of days to re-adjust to Eastern Daylight Time.

It takes a day or two for the players to re-adjust coming east. Usually the Yankees fly east from the west coast after a Sunday day game but in this case they will fly east after a Wednesday night game (10:00PM EDT) which means that it will be tougher for the team to re-adjust. If we can get CC and one or two other players to fly back early then it might be possible to win the Friday night game.

Rays officially call up Matt Moore

    http://rotoworld.com/player/mlb/5807/matt-moore

  29. randy l. September 12th, 2011 at 12:49 pm

being interested in catching, the yankee cacthing situation for now and the immediate and long range future is extremely interesting.

i’m not sure how it’s going to shake out and evolve. romine struck me as a catcher girardi would be very comfortable with.

i can tell from his face he feels pained when montero catches. my opinion is that girardi will never say it, but he doesn’t love the prospect of having an awesome offensive catcher who is not a great defensive catcher.

i do think girardi will try to steer montero to the dh/third catcher option as time goes on.

yankee catching three years from now could be sanchez and romine and montero as the dh/third catcher. of course there’s the aging arod problem that may impact that.

    like i said, interesting possibilities.

  30. Yogi Mantle September 12th, 2011 at 12:50 pm

Blake, RA Dicky said that MLB took the hats so there was no choice in the matter of them wearing them. Many in their clubhouse were planning on wearing the hats.

The Mets were threatened with a huge fine for their club. I imagine that the players would have been too.

    Definitely!

    Blake-

See Where Matt Moore was brought up by the Rays to help overcome the RS for the wild card!!

The Rays designated righty Rob Delaney for assignment to open a 40-man roster spot for top prospect Matt Moore, reports Marc Topkin of the St. Petersburg Times.

Delaney, 27, spent most of the year at Triple-A. There he posted a 1.86 ERA, 7.6 K/9, 2.3 BB/9, and 0.4 HR/9 in 67 2/3 relief innings. He’d been designated and outrighted in May, but was re-added to the 40-man roster in July.

Moore, meanwhile, is the consensus best pitching prospect in the minor leagues. The 22-year-old southpaw has won back-to-back minor league strikeout crowns, whiffing 210 across 155 innings at Double and Triple-A this year. Moore’s electric arm makes for an exciting bullpen addition to a surging Rays team that now sits 3.5 games back of the Red Sox in the wild card standings.

  32. blake September 12th, 2011 at 12:55 pm

    Yogi,

    Yea….pretty ridiculous

    Trader,

Yea I mentioned that this morning…..they clearly see an opening and are going for it. Moore is really good…..but he’s a rookie nontheless…..we’ll see how he does.

  33. Yankee Trader September 12th, 2011 at 12:59 pm

Moore, like David Price when he was first brought up could be enough to bolster the bullpen and make it an interesting last few weeks for the wild card, especially after watching Farnsworth melt down against the RS, blowing the save.

Until later everyone. Have a great day.

Phil- keep the Yankees close, limit the damage, and remember you can do this-facing the worst offensive team in AL. King Felix gets an average of around 3.86 of run support, less than 1/2 the support the Yankees give you.

someone could get fired up there of they don’t make the playoffs.

I just love the Boston decision to give Crawford that contract. Hamstrings anyone?

Yankees get seven more years of A Rod, Boston get six of Crawford.

    What were they thinking?

    Panic moves by the suits.

  45. Erin September 12th, 2011 at 1:14 pm

People weren’t so delicate in the old days. Joe Garigiola quoted Leo Durocher saying to him, “You’re catching today, Dago. I’m saving Westrum for the Series.”

  49. Joe from Long Island September 12th, 2011 at 1:23 pm

Randy- that was a lot of $$$.

AGon – despite his high BA – has been awfully quiet the past month plus. Couple that with Crawford’s disappointing year, and lackey and Jenks, and DiceK, and that’s a lot of money for not a lot of production.

I read something about Theo and the Cubs. Who knows. You can bet Lucchino won’t be the one to take the fall.

You aren’t the first one to think that Giradi likes a defense first catcher.

    I think that’s just foolish.

People trying too explain why Montero wasn’t called up sooner.

How about maybe he wasn’t ready.

  51. Nick in SF September 12th, 2011 at 1:41 pm

So the Montero Catcher Conspiracy (Girardi Variation) is that Girardi needs/wants catchers in his own image and not excellent hitters, therefore he will do all in his power to keep Montero from catching?

I think G. Love postulated that a few times already.

    I miss that guy.

Don’t know about G.Love, but I postulated that, just not as cynically as you wrote there. I think it’s certainly within the realm of possibility that Girardi would prefer a good defensive catcher over one who hits better but the defense is mediocre. However, I think Montero is about mediocre right now and could improve his pitch blocking. I like the idea of a 50/50 or 60/40 catcher split next year with Montero DH’ing many of the game he’s not catching.

  60. randy l. September 12th, 2011 at 2:07 pm

i can’t say how enjoyable it is seeing all the people disappear who said there was no need 5 days ago to worry about having another catcher catch beside martin and cervelli.

some people just have a problem imagining a scenario that hasn’t happened yet.

the yankee catching situation is going to be an interesting one for years to come and is very interesting right now.

the good news is that the yankees have created a wealth of good catching.

there are going to have to be some choices made. as cb said earlier concerning montero wearing the same gear that has allowed concussions in posada and cervelli, the yankees are not perfect n their decision making.

so i think it’s a good idea to keep an eye on their decision making.

as someone who called for the need for more game ready catching before martin and cervelli went down, i think it’s pretty clear that the yankees are winging it here. they really don’t know what they are going to do.

how will romine and montero play. how will martin’s thumb respond? what will the pitchers think of the new catchers? it’s not just if the catcher makes it through a game with no errors, passed ball, or stolen bases against. sometimes some pitchers just don’t like new guys.

i think the yankees are fine because montero can catch. romine clearly can, and martin should be healthy to catch almost all postseason innings.

but it is interesting as hell watching it unfold.

“You of all people that hitting isn’t the only part of catching.

Is there a position that is harder to learn than catcher?”

    maine yankee-

i’m a natural catcher. first time i did it i could do it easily.

some guys are natural outfielders. they can track a mlb fly ball with no difficulty right away.

montero is clearly in the majors as a catcher because of his bat. he would not be there if it was just on his defense. i’m not exactly sure what you’re getting at .

it is hard to learn any position if you don’t have an inborn or natural aptitude to it.

  64. randy l. September 12th, 2011 at 2:18 pm

    blake-

one thing that strikes me is how good a shape the yankees are despite losing two catchers in such a short time.

how many teams could pull up a monteo and a romine. and have a posada there if they need him.

as much as i bash the front office at times, they have created some amazing depth at the cacther position.

i’m not glad cervelli is out for the year, but i’m glad the yankees were forced to use montero catching and jorge too. and it’s nice seeing romine.

  65. MaineYankee September 12th, 2011 at 2:18 pm

What I’m getting at is I think that maybe he hasn’t honed his skills enough as a catcher to have come up earlier.

    Randy,

You really can’t have too many catchers around…..you never know when you’ll need one. The Yanks have a pipeline of them and their depth up the middle may be why they are i’m 1st place.

“What I’m getting at is I think that maybe he hasn’t honed his skills enough as a catcher to have come up earlier.”

    maine yankee-

i’ll agree with you a little.

i hate to say this , but montero is a little lazy and sloppy after he catches the ball and returns it to the pitcher. now you would think that wouldn’t matter because no one was on base and there’s nothing to be charged an error on. no consequence right? i would say wrong because a lot of good catcher habits are formed in throwing back to the pitcher.

one is always getting a good grip on the ball. one is accuracy hitting the pitcher right on the glove so the pitcher doesn’t have to jump or stretch to get the ball . another is using the lower half well so you can put some pop on the ball. romine does this well. montero not so much.

a good release can be practiced. making sure perfect back spin is achieved to get the “rising” four seamer going into second base.

on the other hand is a catcher is too casual about throwing back to the pitcher all kinds of bad habits develop.

i like to see a nice crisp throw back that hits the pitcher right where he reaches out his glove.

  75. Hassey September 12th, 2011 at 3:35 pm

Anyone interested in the zen of hitting should read Shawn Green’s book (yes, THAT Shawn Green):
