Pregame notes: Swisher back in the outfield

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Notes on Sep 13, 2011 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Three and half hours before first pitch, Joe Girardi still wasn’t sure who would be starting in right field. Nick Swisher was going to make some throws in the outfield, and his availability would depend on how he felt.

Obviously, he felt good enough to get in there.

“Tendinitis is going to go away,” Girardi said. “It could irritate him a little bit. It’s when it irritates him a lot that you worry about. There are a lot of guys that are probably playing with tendinitis in their arm right now, it’s just when it becomes too painful that you can’t do what you need to do.”

Just a few days ago, the Yankees seemed incredibly beat up, but the pieces are slowly falling back into place. Swisher is back in the outfield, Russell Martin is back behind the plate and Alex Rodriguez seems to be getting closer.

“It is good to see,” Girardi said. “It seemed like they all came at once, so we could have two back tonight and maybe a third – Alex – when we get to Toronto.”

• Curtis Granderson has a standard day off. Girardi figured it was a good day — as good as any, anyway — with a left-hander on the mound.

• Initially, the Yankees said Rodriguez would sit out three to four days. This is the fourth game he’s skipped, but Girardi is now planning to give him tomorrow, plus Thursday’s scheduled off day. “I think Friday is reasonable for Alex,” he said.

• Francisco Cervelli has been placed on the disabled list retroactive to Friday.

• Girardi said it’s still uncertain whether the Yankees will get Cervelli back this season. “I think it’s really hard to predict what’s going to happen,” he said. “Concussions today have become so unpredictable, you think you’re getting a guy back, he plays one game and then goes right back to the symptoms. I have no idea.”

• Phil Hughes pitched well last night. Now it’s A.J. Burnett’s turn. “I think he can get better and better,” Girardi said. “His changeup was the best I’ve ever seen it the other day. It still comes down to being able to locate your fastball, and I think his curveball has been better with the depth rather than going across.”

• Both Dellin Betances and Andrew Brackman were getting loose during last night’s game, but neither actually got in. “I thought about using one of them,” Girardi said. “They were just throwing after that.”

• For those of you curious, four first-year pitchers have been carrying kids backpacks to and from the bullpen. George Kontos got Elmo, Hector Noesi got Dora the Explorer, Dellin Betances got Hannah Montana and Andrew Brackman got some sort of fairy character that I’ve never seen before.

Hmmm. Chad, if you’re doing this backwards, you missed the postgame notes.

Hope the offense will be on fire.

Thanks for the hard-hitting news, Chad.

  7. luis September 13th, 2011 at 8:59 pm

    Yankees off course!!!

“Anyone else here think Rays catch and pass Red Sox? Their lack of depth is a huge weakness compared to Yankees, and why many here felt they would falter this year.”

    Oh yeah.

And count me in on Joba in the starting rotation!

    :)

  9. Chad Jennings September 13th, 2011 at 9:01 pm

Oops. I’m actually stunned I don’t hit the wrong button more often. Anyway, let’s keep the conversation here. The game post will go back up at the usual time. Sorry about that.

  10. m September 13th, 2011 at 9:02 pm

    Chad,

lol. You can clean up the game thread, too. It got spoiled.

Chad, have Chamberlain or the Yankees released any information on his rehab and exercise program or a timeline on when he might return next year?

One good thing about listening to that annoying voice of Remy while the Red sox are getting a lead is the crestfallen sound in their voices when they blow the lead. almost as soothing as when Tampa blows a game and Staatz hits rock bottom.

So the blind squirrels in beantown are finding a few nuts.

    Big deal.

  15. LGY September 13th, 2011 at 9:10 pm

Why would Farrell bring in a pitcher who got absolutely tattooed by the Sox the last time he faced them?

A little gift to his buddy Francona?

  16. Tyler September 13th, 2011 at 9:10 pm

I know people have been pushing Toronto as a potential darkhorse for next year, but there pitching is horrible outside of Romero. There bullpen isn’t great either. They have a good lineup but that’s not near enough in the AL East.

  17. m September 13th, 2011 at 9:10 pm

meh, they were going to win one eventually. Might as well gift Wakefield his 200th Red Sox win. Goodness knows he doesn’t really deserve it.

Sox just blew it open… 10 – 5… Looks like good ole Wake is finally going to get #200.

Unless Bard gives up another 5 spot of course

  20. JM September 13th, 2011 at 9:11 pm

Boston’s offense was due to break out….But their pitching is still marginal at best. Toronto will score some more.

  21. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 13th, 2011 at 9:11 pm

Funny you mention the annoying voice of Remy. I had just written a post about the annoying voice of Orsillo – but my post was nowhere as kind as yours. He makes me want to vomit on a good day. On a day like today, I’d like someone to heave him over that ridiculous green wall.

I’m ambivalent about Wakefield getting number 200, especially since it’s taken him 200 tries to get it. But fine let him win 200 and then the Suxers can get back to the business of losing.

    Vineyard-

Almost every team has rookies in the ‘pen carry around those backpacks. It’s pretty common. I’m sure they will be hazed in the coming week with the dress up portion too. All in good fun.

  38. BX33 September 13th, 2011 at 9:19 pm

So who will Joe use today when we have our 6 run lead after 6 innings?

I’ll go Valdez (Joe will say that Valdy hasn’t pitched yet and he wanted to keep him ‘fresh)

    Laffey

and Noesi. MAYBE he might throw Kontos a bone and give him the inning instead.

“Anyone else here think Rays catch and pass Red Sox? Their lack of depth is a huge weakness compared to Yankees, and why many here felt they would falter this year.”
    —————————–
Look at the Rays schedule. Currently they are 82-64. How many wins will it take to get the wild card?? Not a mathematician. If it’s 93 the Rays need to go 11-5.

    2 more against the Orioles
    4 against the Red Sox
    3 against the Jays
    7 against the Yankees

If they sweep the Orioles, RS, and Jays they have to take 2 against us. Anything less than sweeping those teams and they take more from our win column.

Probably the WC will require less wins, and who knows it might come from the AL West??

    Thoughts??

Red Sox have 2 against the Jays- winning the 1st one 11-5 in 8th
    4 against the Rays
    7 against the Orioles
    3 against the Yankees

It’s going to take a lot of help from the Showatorioles using their everyday lineup for the Rays to overtake the RS

Always happy for your guys when good things happen. I wish more of them would come your way.

Good luck tonight. I’ll probably get daggers for this but I hope it turns into a well-played, close game – but with the Yanks pulling it out. We need to kick those fenway pretenders to the curb and continuing to win is the only way to do it.

    XOX

  60. luis September 13th, 2011 at 9:41 pm

    Yankee trader,

Interesting proposition…..the angels have 5 games against the A’s, 3 against the orioles, 4 against Toronto and 3 against Texas, lets say they split Toronto 2 and sweep the Orioles 3, then take 4 of the remaining A’s games, and lose the texas series 2-1, thats 10 wins so they end up with a record of 90-62.

The Rays lets say they sweep the Orioles 2, split the sux 2, win the jays series 2 and lose 4-3 the yankees…that 9 more victories so they end up with 91-61 so the wild card goes to the Rays.

The redsox have an easier task, so i’ll say that no, the wild card comes from the East either the Sux or the Rays

  61. Yankee Trader September 13th, 2011 at 9:44 pm

    GF

Yankees haven’t faced Furbush. Attached are Burnett’s stats against the Mariners:

    http://espn.go.com/mlb/player/.....aj-burnett

Gutierrez is out for the year and Figgins was recently activated after being on the DL with a hip flexor, and not in lin-up tonight-both of them have hit AJ well. Ichiro owns him with a .429 average. The rest of their lineup has little experience with Burnett.

The Rays who were tied are now losing to the Orioles 4-2, 2 0uts top 9th, nobody on for the Rays.- and now it’s over Rays lose.

  66. Abomb82 September 13th, 2011 at 9:49 pm

Rays are pretty much going to have to win all 4 in Boston to really be in this. Not to mention, they come to NY directly after that.

They put a brief scare in BOS, but it looks like that all it would be. They can really only afford to lose a couple more games the rest of the year, and none of those to BOS.

  67. jacksquat September 13th, 2011 at 9:54 pm

Rays weren’t even supposed to be in it. Of course they and the Yankees have been helped by Red Sox players dropping like flies.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

I do enjoy the manner in which you have framed this specific challenge plus it does indeed supply me personally some fodder for thought. On the other hand, from what precisely I have experienced, I just trust as the opinions stack on that people continue to be on issue and in no way get started upon a tirade regarding some other news of the day. Still, thank you for this fantastic piece and while I can not agree with this in totality, I value the perspective.

Aw, this was a really nice post. Finding the time and actual effort to generate a top notch article… but what can I say… I hesitate a whole lot and don’t manage to get nearly anything done.

If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

After I initially left a comment I appear to have clicked the -Notify me when new comments are added- checkbox and from now on whenever a comment is added I get 4 emails with the exact same comment. Perhaps there is a means you can remove me from that service? Thanks!

I’ve been browsing online more than three hours today, yet I never found any interesting article like yours. It’s pretty worth enough for me. In my view, if all web owners and bloggers made good content as you did, the web will be a lot more useful than ever before.

Note the skin. Premium lambskin leather, which seems natural, even a little offended. Light or look in the future may not be available in leather.

Having read this I thought it was extremely enlightening. I appreciate you finding the time and energy to put this article together. I once again find myself spending way too much time both reading and leaving comments. But so what, it was still worthwhile!
