Yankees roll past Hernandez

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Sep 13, 2011 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Felix Hernandez had not allowed five runs in an inning all season until the Yankees went to work in the fourth. Bouncing back from a sluggish weekend, the Yankees’ five-run fourth sent them to a 9-3 win that was their second in a row. They increased their American League East lead to four games, the largest lead any team has had in the division this season. Mark Teixeira and Chris Dickerson each went deep in the fourth as the Yankees beat Hernandez for the first time since 2008. Phil Hughes allowed one run through six innings to get the win.

    They should throw Montero back there with Burnett tomorrow… just for comedy

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Truthfully, I’d love to see Jorge back there catching AJ. Hah! We’d probably see some great drama. Jorge wouldn’t put up with AJ’s crap.
    Yanks have a 4 game lead in the division with 16 to play.
    Yanks go 8-8, Sox would have to go 12-4
    WCYF,
    You’re not kidding. For some fun, I encourage everyone to check out Boston.com’s EXTRA BASES. They’re freakin’ out. I think m was the one who posted some of the comments yesterday.
    I can’t freaking believe it! Finally the Yankees have a blowout win and Joe Girardi can’t get a freaking young pitcher out there and take the regulars out? What’s gonna be his excuse today? Come on, we all know he doesn’t like Montero catching and that’s why Romine started today. And for all the excuses he gave the previous days about his taxed up bullpen (when he had the youngsters ready) now he goes back to the useless veterans to close a game where he could’ve easily given the kids a chance? Ridiculous
    Im glad they won and easily, but Girardi was an idiot tonight wasting a great opportunity to give the kids a chance, especially to Brackman or Betances.
  6. m September 13th, 2011 at 1:05 am
    I had a feeling we would win. But I didn’t want risk it with the LoHud curse.
    Anytime you beat Felix is good, so to pounce on him like that was awesome.
    Good job by Hughes. Congrats to Romine.
    The bottom of the lineup did well today.
    4 game lead, straight up. TB winning was icing on top.
  7. Spudz September 13th, 2011 at 1:06 am
    My theory on no kids pitching late in the game: avoid Joba like situation, kid comes in unloads it all, hits 100 and becomes the uber pitching prospect that should be the ace next season.
  8. J. Alfred Prufrock September 13th, 2011 at 1:07 am
    What a joke. Scott f*cking Proctor.
    I’m going to bed.
  9. Spudz September 13th, 2011 at 1:09 am
    Wait till Proctor makes the PS roster
  10. Captain Clutch September 13th, 2011 at 1:11 am
    I hope Martin is back tomorrow. Romine did a great job tonight but I don’t want him to have nightmares tomorrow night if he has to catch AJ the nut. He is too much for a rookie to handle.
    …Girardi was an idiot tonight wasting a great opportunity…
    For many of us on this blog, this summarizes Girardi in general with his in-game management decisions. If there’s a game to give away, he’ll do it. And if there’s an opportunity to waste (i.e., ignoring a hot bat, ignoring a chance to put in a youngster, ignoring a good bullpen arm (that’s DROB to a “T” previous to this year), bunting away an important out — esp by using asking a HR hitter to bunt, leaving in a starting pitcher too long, forcing CC run up his pitch count when the score is completely lopsided…and…well, I could go on — trust Girardi do it.
    Facing Weaver, Haren, Santana and Felix in the first 4, I can live with 2-2.
  14. Wang IS Taiwan September 13th, 2011 at 1:14 am
    CC,
    Agreed. Protect Romine from the nut case. I’ve gotta feeling Martin won’t be ready, though…In that case, hey — put in Jorge!
    I thought Swish flashed some pretty impressive leather over on first base tonight. He made a few Teixeira-esque scoops out of the dirt.
  16. Yanks78 September 13th, 2011 at 1:16 am
    Girardi sees himself in Romain. He also sees himself in Martin, Cervelli, and Molina
    Procter is going to help eat some innings, a few relief appearances to give the important relief pitchers a blow if they have been pushed too much.
    You have to wonder if the Angels would have won those games if the Yankees weren’t sleep walking through the first two. The Angels got a gift, but I would be surprised if they overtake Texas at this point. They just don’t score enough runs and time is running low for them.
    The Rays might make it interesting, but some of it has to do with the Red Sox going back to beginning of the season form and having a lot of pitching woes. The game today for the Sox will tell a lot more about how they might finish, having that day off might give them the head clearing they need to close the door on the Rays.
    So is that 6 starts on 2r or less since coming back? It’s those 3 bad games that messed up his era. Not counting April of course. Just since coming off the dl.
    m,
    those will be the remarks tomorrow, along with the “but they aren’t a ML quality team”, never mind that the Yanks were 3-3 before tonight. in those 8 games, he also has two losses and a no decision. Fastball not back to his usual, but, he’s making it work along with the offspeed stuff. Except for tonight, he’s cut his walk to 1 or 2 and allowed about 5 homers in the last 62 innings. Even with his 3 bad starts, that’s a big change from last year.
    Fly him to Seattle tonight – maybe he can help out Burnett.
    3-3 record against the Mariners before tonight.
    Burnett’s turn to keep this little run going.
    GB7,
    Fastball velocity improved over his last outing (rain-delayed game), but he wasn’t throwing his CB for strikes.
    Anyhoo, results are results and he got it tonight.
    Ian Kennedy goes for win #20 Tuesday night against the Dodgers.
  30. Wang IS Taiwan September 13th, 2011 at 1:40 am
    From the Globe’s Tony Massarotti:
    “Whatever you do, do not blame the injuries. This current streak is entirely in line with who the Red Sox have been. On a handful of occasions this year, the Sox have fallen downright comatose, the most notable example coming in the first 12 games of the season.
    Quite simply, the Sox have been susceptible to lapses all year long, from Opening Day to interleague play to today.
    Presumably, their talent will come through now as it eventually did then, though the team’s latest snag raises concerns on multiple levels. Even if the Red Sox make the playoffs — a scenario that is still likely, albeit in some doubt — they may have to fight far more than they ever envisioned. Aside from a historic collapse, the worst-case scenario now would require the Red Sox to play meaningful games in the final series of the season, a reality that could thrust their pitching plans into a state of chaos.
    ….Earth to the Red Sox: you haven’t won anything yet. A $180 million payroll alone doesn’t guarantee you anything. You opened this season playing as if the playoffs were a birthright and entitlement, and you’re doing the same thing now. Time to pull your heads out from between your rosin bags.”
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Good for him. I still don’t believe he’d have had the same success with the Yanks, but I’m happy for him.

  32. GreenBeret7 September 13th, 2011 at 1:43 am

    m,

    I think 2012 is his real breakout year, where he puts the whole year together. Working with the lesser fastball is making him become a pitcher. The fastball should return next seasson. Had a good curve and threw a few change-ups and cutters tonight. Command was a bit spotty at times, but, overall, a really solid performance. As he said tonight, he still has to improve on getting earlier outs to get deeper in games. Gotta like that he’s never satisfied with his performance.

  33. GreenBeret7 September 13th, 2011 at 1:45 am

    Kennedy could still be a 15 game winner in NY with a 4.00 ERA and that’s plenty good enough.

  34. Wang IS Taiwan September 13th, 2011 at 1:50 am

    GB7,

    Better Kennedy in NY than AJ. But who knows if his path would have been the same if he’d stayed? One thing is for sure: I never would have guessed that Kennedy would be a better, more consistent pitcher than Hughes at this point. I’m hoping Hughes keeps progressing. I want him to be successful with the Yanks.

    I, too, like that Hughes is being forced to become a pitcher this season. Now, if he gets that going, AND then has his fastball quicken a bit, he’d be awesome.

  35. yankeefeminista September 13th, 2011 at 1:52 am

    I believe IPK would have had success in NY. The Yankees just didn’t have the patience they thought they would need to wait on a command pitcher while he refined his stuff. Especially considering we prefer power arms. Still, it would have been nice if IPK had had his success with us. Good luck on #20.

  36. GreenBeret7 September 13th, 2011 at 1:57 am

    YankeeFem,

    It’s always good to see the young players that we helped raise from puppies to do really well, even when they go somewhere else. It helps when making trades that other teams realize that the Yankees have quality in the system other than the BIG 4 (Montero, Sanchez, Betances and Banuelos).

  37. Pat M. September 13th, 2011 at 2:01 am

    GB7….Clerly Phil Hughes learning he art of pitching in 2011…..The hangover effects form 2009 / 2010 have taken there toll on time as he hasnt’n had his full toll bekt when takes the hill this seaosn…Yet he;s going well and will be a factor come October…….I can seeeither Colon and more likely Gacia being the odd men out ….Garcia is the liability in postsean….Our boy Austin R. showed pose and command out here,,,,,He is the catcher of the future of the NY Yankess………..Great win and one less game off of the shedule…….4 up on the lost column….At this state of the season which it’s gettin close as the finish line is sight just for time for my Sepr 23rd game against Boston with the AL East clincher plus MARIANO resets thhe record book

  38. yankeefeminista September 13th, 2011 at 2:03 am

    GB, true and I also enjoy continuing to root for our prospects even when they have been traded. Especially the ones I have scouted and grown up with.

    As for IPK and Hughes, I also think IPK was always more polished than Hughes, although Hughes had the better power arm. IPK always had not only the FB, but the changeup and the curve. Hughes will be fine; it’ll just take longer than people expected. I still would like to see him throw a harder curve.

    What did you think of Romine behind the plate?

  39. GreenBeret7 September 13th, 2011 at 2:12 am

    Evening, Pat. Loving what Kennedy is doing in Arizona, too. He’s been impressive, especially considering the bad rap he’s gotten. Hughes has had 3 bad starts, but 8 very good ones. Like Nova, once he gets over that 6 inning block, he’s really going to help. Not rushing anything, but, I’m looking forward to next season. I think Hughes is finding out that no matter how hard he works in the off-season, he’s still got more to go…every year. Still young, but, he’s pitching now and not just relying on ability alone.

    Impressed with Romine’s defensive work over the last two months. Just needs to eliminate the little nicks that slowed him down this year. Love that ge got his first hit out of the way. He didn’t seem overwhelmed by hernandez, either. He hung in well.

    Hope all is going well with you and family.

  40. GreenBeret7 September 13th, 2011 at 2:19 am

    YankeeFem, I thought Romine did a fine job for his first start. It helped not having a lot of pitches in the dirt, too. Montero took a beating with Garcia for his first start. Garcia beat him up pretty good in Scranton, too. Montero did just fine with the one exception of the bouncer that got between the wickets. They will make a fine tandem in about two years. Still would like to see them at other positions….especially Romine, who could be a fine defensive player at 3-4 positions.

  41. jacksquat September 13th, 2011 at 2:20 am

    Maybe Betances is being saved for a possible 3rd or 4th inning exit by AJ tomorrow.

  42. CompassRosy September 13th, 2011 at 3:06 am

    Congrats on the win, Yank fans.

    Definitely not the type of game I expected with Felix on the mound.
    I’ll take all the blame, as it was my first time in the King’s Court. I must say though, it was the best time I ever had in a loss – comfort in numbers, I guess (and chants, and turkey legs and jesters)

    I’m thinking it’s possible a couple of the young M’s could have some success against AJ.
    But, I am much less confident at the prospect of Charlie still standing after about 3 innings…

    :(

    ~Rosy

  43. m September 13th, 2011 at 4:08 am

    “I haven’t even thought about that,” Romine said. “I don’t know [Cervelli's] situation. I don’t know what is going on, but if they want me to catch in the playoffs, if they want to keep me around that would probably be the coolest thing I’ve ever heard. “That’s what you want, you want to be in the playoffs with the Yankees. It would probably be the best part of my life.”

    Espn recap. Super Smash Brothersl relax after taking down the king. Montero happy for Romine.
