Postseason possibilities: Position players

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Sep 15, 2011 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

As usual, most of the Yankees postseason roster is easy to predict. Unusually, there is at least one significant spot in the lineup that’s still up for grabs.

Postseason locks
Russell Martin, Mark Teixeira, Robinson Cano, Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Brett Gardner, Curtis Granderson, Nick Swisher, Andruw Jones, Eric Chavez and Eduardo Nunez.

Making his case: Jesus Montero
Wednesday was his second three-strikeout game of the week, but Montero has also shown the power and advanced approach that made him the team’s top hitting prospect. Right now, he seems to be the team’s primary designated hitter, or at least their regular DH against left-handers. Especially with Francisco Cervelli hurt, Montero seems to be playing his way onto the roster.

Veteran in an unusual spot: Jorge Posada
It’s hard to imagine the Yankees would actually keep Posada off their postseason roster. If nothing else he’s a veteran switch hitter who can DH or come of the bench to catch and play first base. Of course, he’s also started just one game and played in only two others since the end of August. Does Posada’s diminishing role open the possibility of sacrificing his spot in favor of carrying two rookie catchers, or did Saturday’s emergency work behind the plate convince the Yankees that Posada can be the de facto backup catcher?

New guy with a chance: Austin Romine
Cervelli’s concussion and the fact the Yankees like Romine’s defense behind the plate means Romine has a chance to make the postseason roster despite spending almost the entire year in Double-A, with no big league call-up until injuries left the Yankees desperate and short-handed. Romine making the team might depend on how fully the Yankees trust Montero and Posada behind the plate, and whether they think they need more than an emergency backup behind Martin.

Role players to consider: Chris Dickerson, Greg Golson, Ramiro Pena
A left-handed outfielder, a right-handed outfielder and a utility infielder. All three are familiar around the Yankees clubhouse, and all three could provide speed and defense off the bench. Pena is probably redundant with Nunez having a spot locked up, and the choice might come down to Dickerson and Golson, a choice between a right-handed hitter and a left-handed hitter, each of whom brings a similar skill set to the bench. Carrying one of these three likely means losing either Montero, Posada or Romine.

My guess
In a five-game series, the Yankees take their chances with Martin as their top guy behind the plate, choosing to carry Montero and Posada as backup options, but leaving Romine or Cervelli off the roster. Dickerson takes the last spot on the bench, serving as a defensive replacement and pinch runner.

    Hi everyone,

Very interesting post, especially lockdown and WTP about the curveball of AJ and Verlander…the problem with AJ is consistency, he simply can’t repeat his mechanics, that’s why i tend to agree with MTU that he will always be a 500 pitcher. He is simply frustrating and i have run out of valium and peptobismol….i hope he gets traded in the off season, but i do root for him, because i think he is a good person.

    betsy,

with all due respect, no doubt that Garcia has been one of our top 4 pitchers in the regular season…..but his stuff doesn’t play well against good a patient line ups, and if lockdown is right that teams are conciously laying off the splitter, he is doomed, so i would pause before giving him a start in the PS ( in fact if i was the GM i wouldn’t), but you are right that merit wise he definitly deserves one.

  2. Red Robin September 15th, 2011 at 6:48 pm

How about Miggs or Murphydog or Doreen? Pollyanna Porkchop Pough? Bodishattva? Any of them still around?

    —–

    Yes.

  3. Betsy September 15th, 2011 at 6:49 pm

Luis, well I don’t want Hughes or AJ on the mound. Hughes is not a guy with power stuff anymore and I wouldn’t trust him……….AJ has power stuff, but he doesn’t often show it and mostly he’s been dreadful this year. Given all that, I start Garcia without any hesitation.

  4. Red Robin September 15th, 2011 at 6:52 pm

Core One is not ready for prime time.

    0/5 with 3 K’s last night.

  5. luis September 15th, 2011 at 6:53 pm

    Betsy,

I think it depends how both AJ and to a lesser degree Hughes perform from here on out, if they keep on struggling, Garcia gets the nod…..if not all bets are off….i guess time will tell, LOL

  6. Niblick September 15th, 2011 at 6:54 pm

Anyone but Nunie. He has played atrocious defense most of the year, he’s stopped hitting, and given his recent failure to run to first and failure to cover third base on the bunt, he’s now playing with his head firmly placed up his you know what. We don’t need him; if Arod is hurt we have Chavez; if Chavez is hurt we can substitute Pena.

  7. blake September 15th, 2011 at 6:55 pm

    Chad,

I agree with that for the first round.

  8. Frozen Rope September 15th, 2011 at 6:57 pm

    off day TRIVIA!

according to verducci’s si article on Mo, Rivera has thrown to 22 catchers in his Yankees career. Who’s got all 22?

so far i’ve only got about 12….

  9. 4 train September 15th, 2011 at 6:57 pm

yo betsy chic i guess you disn’t see your dude garcia lately. put his weal slop on the mound and it will be christams in october. you don’t have a clue. what happened daddy and mommy don’t like huighes anymore .

  10. luis September 15th, 2011 at 6:58 pm

    Chad,

very good post, and i tend to agree with it

  11. luis September 15th, 2011 at 7:00 pm

    4 train,

With all due respect that post was out of line, so please try to be a little more respectful

  12. GreenBeret7 September 15th, 2011 at 7:06 pm

I can’t see NYYs going with a 12 man pitching staff in the first series. Pena’s defense hasn’t exactly been stellar, either and has zero bat. You go with Montero and Posada for the left and right side. I’d prefer that 14th bat being Golson over dickerson. Better glove, better arm and more speed.

  13. Villa Nova-Ya September 15th, 2011 at 7:07 pm

They can re-tool the roster in between series, is that correct?

  14. luis September 15th, 2011 at 7:08 pm

    GB7,

Yes, but Dickerson has a little more experience, so maybe that’s why they’ll pick him over Golson.

  15. luis September 15th, 2011 at 7:09 pm

    Villa,

yes they can in between series, but not in the middle of one

  16. Villa Nova-Ya September 15th, 2011 at 7:09 pm

I think, no I guess I hope, that they find a spot for Jorge. If not, I believe it will demoralize the team.

  17. Villa Nova-Ya September 15th, 2011 at 7:10 pm

    luis

    Thanks.

  18. luis September 15th, 2011 at 7:12 pm

    Villa,

No problem….Jorge being in the PS roster has more to do with having a veteran bat than anything else….I wouldn’t think it would demoralized the team, but it wouldn’t be the right thing to do, after all Po is a Yankee great.

  19. Charlie Sheen September 15th, 2011 at 7:16 pm

    WINNING !!!!! WINNING BIG !!!!! YES !!!!!

  20. Giuseppe Franco September 15th, 2011 at 7:17 pm

Dickerson and Golson are essentially the same player – a 5th outfielder – but one bats from the right and one from the left.

That said, I do think Golson is the better defender (certainly the stronger arm) and faster runner.

  21. GreenBeret7 September 15th, 2011 at 7:21 pm

GF, if the need the bat of the 5th outfielder, they are in a lot of trouble. For that position, I want the defense.

  22. Charlie Sheen September 15th, 2011 at 7:37 pm

Any fine babes on this blog?

  23. Red Robin September 15th, 2011 at 7:56 pm

Another winner from the Red Sucks farm system: Weiland with a shutout.

  29. kd September 15th, 2011 at 8:00 pm

nice to see the sox off to their usual start

i am not convinced there’s enough time for the rays to take it, but it sure is fun to watch

  30. pkyankfan69 September 15th, 2011 at 8:02 pm

LONGO LOL… Too bad the Rays lost to the O’s the last 2 nights or things would be even more interesting

  31. Red Robin September 15th, 2011 at 8:02 pm

We hate it, but you know Ellsbury will hit at least one homerun tonight.

Would you rather have Granderson or Illsbury?

I think 95% of us would take Illsbury on the team. No?

  34. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 15th, 2011 at 8:05 pm

    Hi kd!!!

When the big fat roider was on base for the Sux, I couldn’t help but think how protected he is now to slurp up those Dominican milkshakes without any interference.

  35. luis September 15th, 2011 at 8:06 pm

MLB could care less about the PEDs problem. They only moved on it when they were threatened by Congress. Big Fat Ass had the benefit of the union hack sitting beside him “answering” all the questions he was asked. Notice how the press disappeared? Meanwhile, Alex was centerstage at his PED press conference, with no help from anyone in site.

    What a joke.

  37. Red Robin September 15th, 2011 at 8:08 pm

    Damn.

Bottom of the order MVP’s Saltymackychia and Scootero is rallying the Sucks to yet another comeback.

  38. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 15th, 2011 at 8:09 pm

“Would you rather have Granderson or Illsbury?”

Are you on permanent drugs? You absolutely know the answer to the question you asked. I can only guess that you are another troll who slipped through the door, or a multiple.

    Keep dreaming!!!, Go Rays

  40. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 15th, 2011 at 8:10 pm

  43. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 15th, 2011 at 8:12 pm

And that’s the kind of junk that causes people to continue to leave this forum. There’s a clause in the TOS that absolutely gives Chad the right to start bouncing posters who are here to do nothing but annoy. I am definitely going to acquaint him with it and then start lobbying that retreads who are here to do nothing but troll be disappeared.

  44. J. Alfred Prufrock September 15th, 2011 at 8:12 pm

Ellsbury doesn’t have nearly the power of Grandy, and couldn’t hold a candle to him as a defender.

    No brainer: Grandy.

  45. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 15th, 2011 at 8:14 pm

J Al – it’s not a serious question. You might not want to feed the trolls, if you get my drift.

  46. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 15th, 2011 at 8:14 pm

    GO RAYS!!!!!

  47. J. Alfred Prufrock September 15th, 2011 at 8:15 pm

trisha, it’s in the TOS but they’re not interested. there’s one among us who constantly violates it, and it’s just time to conclude that the Lohud leadership just doesn’t care, or worse, they’ll take the hits any way they can get them :( .

  48. luis September 15th, 2011 at 8:15 pm

    Hi Trisha,

Yes, you are probably right, i just love to stick it up to those trolls….by the way Sh…bury just poped out

  49. J. Alfred Prufrock September 15th, 2011 at 8:16 pm

trisha, agreed. I usually ignore them, but I have my moments. I didn’t even take the license plate on that query, I just answered it, incredulous. But you’re probably right. Remember Howard? Everyone was politely chatting him up, but he was such a flagrant Blowsuxer. He whimpered off as soon as we took the second game in that series…

  50. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 15th, 2011 at 8:17 pm

J Al, I have found Chad to be very helpful in the past. Of course the trolls who continue to show up make his job difficult. But I don’t think he personally knows about that clause in the TOS. There are enough of us here who have had it with several troublemakers. I do believe Chad would move on it if he knows he has the right to.

My hope anyway. Hey anything’s worth a try. If you remember Pete, he made those idiots disappear as quickly as they showed up.

  51. Red Robin September 15th, 2011 at 8:17 pm

The Weasel up at the plate with bases loaded. one out.

    Grand Slam about to happen.

    :(

  52. LGY September 15th, 2011 at 8:18 pm

Wow. That was a perfect pitch. Brutal call.

  53. Red Robin September 15th, 2011 at 8:18 pm

    …. or at least a couple of RBI’s .

  54. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 15th, 2011 at 8:19 pm

luis and J A, I hear both of you. J Al, believe me I have given in to the temptation on many occasions. But I at least wanted you to know we were dealing with a troll. I cannot imagine the combination of envy and insecurity that would motivate a Sux fan to spend time here playing Yankee fan.

  55. Red Robin September 15th, 2011 at 8:19 pm

Man. I hate the sight of Big Poopi.

  56. LGY September 15th, 2011 at 8:20 pm

  58. luis September 15th, 2011 at 8:21 pm

Yes he got squeezed big time with the elf

  59. J. Alfred Prufrock September 15th, 2011 at 8:21 pm

Trisha, I don’t think it’s Chad, he’s busy on a pretty demanding beat. Someone else, maybe the IT guy or someone, needs to alert whoever does the slapping down around here.

  60. J. Alfred Prufrock September 15th, 2011 at 8:22 pm

wait – didn’t Pete A troll his own blog? That’s what someone said, maybe it was Tar…hey, what happened to Tar? I miss Tar!

I know there are posters here who believe that Pete was trolling the blog. Who knows. I guess anything’s possible. But I will say that when he was here, heads rolled. When A-hole Sux fans showed up and played the fool, like Red Robin does, they disappeared as quickly as they came.

  73. J. Alfred Prufrock September 15th, 2011 at 8:32 pm

trisha, I guess he had his good points. Most people have at least one or two.

  74. LGY September 15th, 2011 at 8:33 pm

Pete was rough around the edges and his methods weren’t always exactly kosher but he made sure to always keep a lively baseball conversation going even if he had to be intentionally controversial to do so.

Chad is a better journalist and his posts are more informative imo but the comments section pales in comparison since he took over. Not just the quality but sheer number of posts and diversity of opinions.

It seems to me Chad views the blog as simply an extension of his job at the newspaper. Just a place to share information. Pete viewed this place as an entirely different entity like it was a personal blog for him to cultivate.

  75. J. Alfred Prufrock September 15th, 2011 at 8:33 pm

missed it, luis. But I’m sure he’ll be crying if there’s a called strike against him, since there never has been a legit one.

  76. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 15th, 2011 at 8:34 pm

J Al, believe me he wasn’t my favorite person because he could be extremely acerbic if he didn’t agree with posters’ opinions, and he was on Arod like white on rice. He was definitely a displaced Sux fan. But he did at least try to deal with trolls and make the place more user friendly that way.

  77. Yogi Mantle September 15th, 2011 at 8:35 pm

  79. TD213 September 15th, 2011 at 8:36 pm

“Would you rather have Granderson or Illsbury?”

Ellsbury – younger, more speed, less strikeouts, much less streaky, many more doubles, much higher average. Similar power.

I’d rather have a guy like that leading off for the next few years over a guy who might hit 40 HRs but will also strike out 180 times.

Note – this is based off the years each guy is currently having, not factoring in regression, progression, injuries, etc.

  80. Tar September 15th, 2011 at 8:38 pm

    :D

    Hi Everyone!

J alfred to funny. I haven’t come to the blog in a week. Made a pact with my son about spending our time wisely. And there was your posts. Thanks.

The Good people here are what this blog has always been about. Some are just jealous and try to ruin it.

And yes Pete did troll his own blog. Usually something anti Alex. He slipped up one day by including his name in a post ( caught by DT) that would not get through the filter for anybody but him.

I have to say I am so glad that west coast trip is done, too many late nights for me. I’m exhausted!!

  81. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 15th, 2011 at 8:46 pm

LGY, I think there needs to be a balance. Pete was over the top in the way he treated the blog as his own. I don’t know if you remember, but posters were not allowed to post YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and were told they would be banned if they did. I’m not making that up. Don’t forget though that Pete had been at it a while. He wasn’t a newly-minted journalist. I think this is Chad’s first foray into a paper/forum this size, so he is still getting his feet wet. I think he does a great. When Sam Borden would take over for Pete, it was a lot of fun because Sam would hang out with us and post with us. The nice thing about Sam and Chad, IMO, is that they are both really nice people without an edge (Jeter? He has an edge). If Chad had more time to hang out with us here, it would make it more personal, but I prefer no interference to a moderator that’s nasty to us!

I absolutely believe that the reason for the disintegr ation of the quality of the posts has more to do with the crap that was allowed to go on where posters were harassed and threatened and the forum was basically hijacked and held hostage. That caused a mass exodus. Posters also announced they were leaving before that because the hijacker managed to turn the forum into a circus, and not an enjoyable one either.

The fact that posters like the West Coast fraud are allowed to throw their weight around and ruin the general enjoyment of the blog is another reason that people don’t find posting enjoyable.

My opinion on the reality of the situation, past and present.

  82. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 15th, 2011 at 8:48 pm

    Hi Tar!

    :)

Awwww. The Sux aren’t having a good night!

  83. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 15th, 2011 at 8:50 pm

Tar, mick swore off the forum for a while. IMO it’s made a difference in the level of vitriol, though his butt buddy still manages to hold court.

  84. luis September 15th, 2011 at 8:51 pm

    Trisha,

One question…..Why wouldn’t he allow a YES!!!! comment??, because it meant it was yelling or something like that?

  85. Tar September 15th, 2011 at 8:54 pm

I agree with and a big hello to trish. :D

Pete did a lot of things really good. He was and is really funny, which I liked a lot.

He’s also a pretty darn good writer.

But his hatred for Alex was over the top.IMO It showed his true colors—— SOX FAN.

Also His treatment of certain posters who disagreed with his position (GB, GF and most women to name a few) was unprofessional and uncalled for.

  86. luis September 15th, 2011 at 8:57 pm

    BBury, just struckout!!! yes!!

  87. Tar September 15th, 2011 at 8:57 pm

    Luis

I beleive That trish may be thinking about posters who would try to be the first post on a thread and would post FIRSt.

It was very childish and IMO need to stop. I could be wrong but I think it First and not YES

  88. luis September 15th, 2011 at 9:02 pm

    Tar,

The thing is that i use the YES alot, thinking that is nothing wrong about it, but if it was the First thing, yeah it is childish

  89. Triple Short of a Cycle September 15th, 2011 at 9:13 pm

I agree that the first comment is childish but what harm does it do? Its one post out of the hundreds or sometimes thousands of comments. Why do people sweat such insignificant stuff?

  90. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 15th, 2011 at 9:17 pm

Back with my healthy KFC. :) Before I go to eat it, I will say that it was YES!!!! we were barred from saying. Also the thing about being first. I have to say that I never attempted to get the first post and say “first!” but I wasn’t terribly bothered when someone did it. I thought it was kind of funny because I think it was in fun, not that someone really felt the need to be first.

I think he said we couldn’t say YES!!! because he didn’t consider it a real post. Seriously, that’s all I can think of.

And I will also tell you that much to my dismay, he also took away my famous Y-A-W-N! No lie.

    YAWN!!!

    ;)

Sometimes for me, YES!!!!!!!!!!!!! says it all. For others I’m sure, too, especially in the middle of a game!

I miss Blake making a comment about the Suxian prophesy. This seems to be an ideal time to do it! Too bad big fatso can’t go any faster – or didn’t. Because he should have been all the way to second.

    :)

    Good.

Great article & interview on Austin Romine talking about how he improved this season skill wise and maturity wise. Girardi may have a spot for him on the postseason roster. Check it out here —> http://stuckonprospects.mlblog.....t-from-10/
