Hughes scratched from Monday’s start
Phil Hughes has been scratched from Monday’s start after experiencing lower back spasms yesterday. A.J. Burnett will start in his place, and Hughes is expected to start Tuesday or Wednesday.
“It was bad yesterday,” Hughes said. “It’s a lot better today.”
The spasms started after Hughes threw a bullpen, and he said something similar happened three years ago, but he was able to make his next start with no problem. He got treatment today and was moving just fine. How do you treat back spasms?
“Sit in a hot tub and sweat to death,” Hughes said.

Feel better soon Hughes.

GB7,
Yes, I’ve been following the Meyer story, and it’s awe-inspiring. Have you ever been to the Infantry Museum at Ft Benning? It’s amazing how many stories there are like that, and a ton more that never got recognized. Worth the trip.

This was an important win on many leves:
1) Many of the bats are starting to wake up, tex’s opposite field hits are encouraging to say the least. Granderson is coming out as well and the adition of Arod’s bat only deepens an already deep line up.
2) The BP has been doing an incredible job, but today i think we learned that Noesi is going to be an important part of the BP in the post season…Also Sorianos is pitching up to par to his abilities.
3)We get the chance to put some distance with the sux ( Go Rays! ).
4) My only concern is Bart
That isn’t the best treatment for back spasms. Electro-galvanic stimulation works more effectively, by a wide margin. Acupuncture works very well, and combining it with electro-galvanic stimulation is about the best way to take care of it. Heat is by far old school.
A lot depends on the location of the spasm, but if it isn’t structural in nature, it shouldn’t be all that hard to treat. Even manipulations could solve the issue.
We need a solid # 2 starter for the playoffs.
Who’s that gonna be ?
MTU,
Nova,
And Lestah gets in another run. Love it.
Lester just WP’ed a run in.
3 zip rays.
Boston is in a lot of trouble.

Tom, I have. I’ve been to most of the military museums from FT Stewart, Ft Benning, Ft Knox, Ft Hood. I love ‘em The Audie L. Murphy Museum and Ft Stewart is small, but, really nice. Meyer is quite a humble kid. Imagine asking the President of the US if he can call him back during his lunch hour and then sitting down and having a cold one with him. Said he felt like he failed because he couldn’t save the other 4 (who were already dead). Congratulations to SGT Meyer. I salute you. The best of what America has to offer. Was good to see the two others, including Meyer’s driver on the gun truck received the Navy Cross. Too many times, the secondary people get overlooked in those situations. Congratulations
Luis-
I had a discussion with several people this AM about that.
I do not feel comfortable thinking of Nova in that role.
He is very talented but also very inexperienced.
In the playoffs experience counts for something especially in such a pivotal role.
I’m really sorry Colon seems to be falling down.
I was hoping he’d hang in there.
Boston just stole a run.
Crawford was out at the plate but the ump missed the call.
Lestah is not an ace.
He was out!
Boston’s pitching staff is in shambles.
MTU,
Didn’t read the post of the am, but i’ll tell you this:
1) The kid has been the second best starter in the second half.
2) He has shown that he has character and handles himself very well in adverse conditions
3) He has steadily improved since his debut.
Do i think is an ideal situation?. No, but you have to work with what you have.
Colon’s fall is very concerning
Luis-
Good points.
I’m still not comfortable. I wish it were different.
you’re right though. You have to work with the hand your dealt.
McCarver: “You know, it appears that Saltalamacchia may have planned that one hop to Scutaro” (on a “caught stealing”)
If Hughes and AJ continue to improve and Garcia and colon struggle, it’s possible that the rotation will be CC, Nova, AJ and Hughes. Colon and Garcia would be ready out of the pen if one of the starters imploded.
m-
Did he also plan for the ump to give him the benefit on the call ?
His broadcast partner, “[Lester's] struggles today might have more to do with who’s behind the plate.”
Luis,
Well said about Nova. If performance matters, he clearly has been far better than then rest down the stretch.
^^calling balls and strikes. Because it’s totally not Salty’s fault that Jennings stole home on a ball that got away from Salty.
Lester was staring at the runner, like he was the man.
Looking at another angle, Lester was staring at him because he dared to step on his foot when he was covering the base.
mac-
You have pretty lofty expectations for a kid who has never pitched in a single playoff game.
Let’s go Niemann the Sux killer !!!!!
Rays up 3-2 in the top of the 4th.
Colon get skipped? He just went on 7 days rest, that’s almost like getting skipped. Perhaps that is the problem, not the solution.
Mac,
thank you, performance has to matter, but we have seen plenty of cases where they give the ball to lesser pitcher because of experience, i hope this time they give the chance to the one that deserves it.
MTU,
I think the kid will hold his own….he is going to surprise some posters around here
Luis-
I hope you are right because his level of responsibility appears to be rising by the day.
Lestard pitching very well this game. Other than those 3 runs, he is pitching a shutout and has completely dominated the Rays.
All signs pointing to another Red Sucks victory.
Red Robin September 17th, 2011 at 5:38 pm

Translation: Even though the ship has a leak and has been taking on water, the ship is still floating and hasn’t been completely dominated by the waves.
MTU,
i hope so too, again it’s a far from ideal scenario, but i honestly think that he will rise to the challenge.
Too bad the retreads do make their way to the forum and play the idiot, the way “Red Robin” does. It isn’t even funny stuff. It’s pathetic.
*****************
Just got in and am getting ready to go out again but turned on the television to see what was happening with the little leaguers in beantown and they did not disappoint me.
Think about this for a minute. The Rays haave one of the smallest payrolls in baseball and lost a lot of their big guns, the way they usually do. Here they are on the precipice of grabbing the wild card. You have to give huge props to that organization.
And as much as I love the business-like atmosphere of the Yanks, I think things like grunge night, pajama night, and letterman sweater night are great things for unifying a team. Very sharp thinking on Maddon’s part.
Lester = done.
4-2 rays
Niemann really needs to get it together fast or else R.I.P. time for the Rays. How can you get dominated by minions likes Aviles and Scootero.
Lester looking very pedestrian for a couple of months. He rarely gets through six innings with throwing 100 pitches.
The Rays are currently down to the scrum 4 games in the loss column. If they take today and tomorrow if brings it down to 2.
Yanks close out with Rays and Sux.
Sux close out with Yanks and Orioles. O’s have been playing teams tough lately.
This is going to be a very interesting ending!!!
I’d happily give up two of our wins to the Rays if it meant they overtaking the chosen of 2011, the sad sad Suxers!!!!!
GO RAYS!!!!
Great night, all.
In other words, he’s very much like C.C. recently — except may be slightly better.
Oh boy.
Bad error there by SRod. PEDroia is going to hit a 2 run homerun now.
“Lester looking very pedestrian for a couple of months. He rarely gets through six innings with throwing 100 pitches”
Absolutely. Other than the possibility of Beckett (who knows at this point), Aceves, and Papelbon, the Sux have no sure bet pitching.
Good!
Good night Trisha!!, have a good one
Trisha, the stuff that Maddon does just comes off as sophomoric. These are supposed to be men, not children. While the game should be fun to play for them, the other stuff is childish antics that have nothing to do with game.
This umpire tonight behind HP is AGAIN making terrible calls on the most crucial pitches of the game.
http://bit.ly/pWVA9n
Umpires have done everything they can in their power to aid the Red Sox this series.
They’ve been called safe on the bases when they were clearly out, and their given the biggest joke of a strikezone I’ve ever seen.
What a scam.
Only total idiots don’t realize that CC’s only problem is pitching on long rest!
****************
ELLSBURY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yogi, I think it’s both sweet and unifying. They’re a young team. Joe Girardi has pool tournaments in spring training, they used to have court in the clubhouse (forget what that was all about). I think it’s part of his strategy, and heck, it’s working. They sure on unified based on the a$tronomical talent they all show up with from jump street!
Illsbury.
Ha – Ha.
Ha – Ha.
Night, luis! You also.
KEEP IT UP RAYS!!!!!
FOX also fawns over the very dead sux.
Talk about a YAWN!!!!!
Nice inning by Lester. He can go 7 now
That should be – they sure AREN’T unified based on the a$tronomical talent they all show up with from jump street!
AGon is going to be the size of Big Papi in a couple of years – he must be on the Youkilis training regime
Trisha, the type of things that Maddon does is what I used to do with the kids in Cub Scouts. There comes a point where the side stuff becomes a side show and is a detriment to the game on the field.
It becomes hard to take a guy like seriously. His thinking “outside the box” does work, trouble is, it works less effectively than playing in the way most teams do.
There is a time and place for playing games. With what these guys are paid, they should not be acting like children at a school outing. Keeping it loose is one thing, turning it into a distraction, which is what Maddon does, might just be part of their coming up short when it counts.
Matt Moore brining the 98 from the left side.
I am hoping Moore would launch a 98 mph fastball into Big Poopi’s head.
Two walks already for Moore — he’s really “Betancesing” this game away.
Barding would be more appropriate
So I gather this Moore guy is Tampa’s version of Boone Logan?
Barding would be the correct term.
But he didn’t Bard, as he got out of it without blowing the lead.
I wish he was Boone Logan……
Who’d of known Red Sox fans were such low-life losers that they’d create MULTIPLE accounts to troll a Yankees site, wasting away their day unproductively?
Everybody, that’s who.
Red Sox fans just did the wave in a 4-2 game 7th inning with their team’s playoff dreams on the line. ahahahaha
LMAO….they still do the wave in the stands at Fenway..
Crawford probably didn’t make a friend of the ump with that. heh.
Well. There goes the Rays season.
Damn.
The sadder part is that they got owned by the likes of Scootero and Aviles.
Impossible. Pedroia struck out?
Red Sox Robin, aren’t you supposed to be singing sweet caroline and doing the wave right about now?!?
Hahahahaha your franchise is a JOKE!
No laser show there…too bad shorty…
OMG…Bard pitching yet again…..Francona is ‘Proctoring’ him..
FOX booth gushing with pride over Sox pen….yuck!
Had to go out so listened to the comeback in the car. What a great win! Did anyone else hear Sterling call Suzyn “a rare beauty” right before her clubhouse report? Classic
JM, he wasn’t talking about Suzyn. He was talking about someone’s daughter – maybe a YES/Yankee employee. Any way, FTR, I think Suzy qualifies. She’s an original.
////
Anybody see Moore’s FB AGon when down swinging on? Gameday had it at 98 mph. I’m cursing I can’t watch this.
Sox running out of outs
Matt Moore = stud
JAP,
nope because of stupid FOX….he’s hit 98 pretty routinely though today.
Just an FYI for those in the NY area getting the Mets. I got home a few minutes ago and am watching the Red Sox-Rays game on Fox Deportes.
thanks JAP, I must have gotten confused. but i have to admit i started laughing when i thought he was talking about Suzyn.
I have it on Fox Deportes and synced it up through my DVR with this Rays radio broadcast
http://den-a.plr.liquidcompass.....38;uid=429
JAP-
I saw it. High cheese. Inner half. Could not touch it.
thanks LGY
Moore’s delivery is effortless.
Easy gas.
Secondary stuff looks real good too.
Potential stud. A #1 type arm.
balk on Morales
MTU,
you don’t have to rub it in
Go Rays!
MTU September 17th, 2011 at 7:01 pm

Thanks, guys. Yea, I know he brings it. Next year, Price and Moore in the same rotation – not fair! I’m sitting in a frozen yogurt place in Princeton. Was at the library earlier where they were showing the Mets-Braves game, which was frustrating. Haven’t seen a lick of the Sox-Rays.
MTU, make sure Tampa doesn’t blow it.
was nice to see Tex be able to take the ball to left center today from the left side. That was nice to see
And in Baltimore, plate umpire Brian Onora gets hurt during pre-game warm-ups.
Blake-
Wish we had him.
I can see why they’d be very excited about him.
He looks better than Price to me.
A scary thought.
MTU has he just thrown the one inning?
Price, Shields, Moore, Hellickson, Davis, Niemann……that’s really not cool
With the emergence of Moore, would the Rays be more willing to trade James Shields at the winter meetings? That would be a smart move for them because they need to restock their barren shelves with bats. What team has offense to deal them and needs pitching?
MTU,
he has better secondary stuff than Price…..hey the Yanks have Manny B
The scary bottom of the order (Saltalamacchia, Crawford, Aviles, Scoootero) up for the Sucks.
I sense a game-tieing/game-winning homerun imminent.
JAP-
More than 2 I think. Lost track.
“would the Rays be more willing to trade James Shields at the winter meetings? ”
wouldn’t shock me….his value will be very high this winter.
What ever happened with their number 1 overall draft pick, Beckam? Is he making any noise?
Blake-
I believe Manny has #1 potential too.
Somewhat different style and weapons.
Manny’s best pitch might just be his change.
Moore’s is the gas.
I could see Shields in Texas if they lose Wilson – or maybe even if they keep him
JM September 17th, 2011 at 7:01 pm
thanks JAP, I must have gotten confused. but i have to admit i started laughing when i thought he was talking about Suzyn.
////
It wouldn’t be beyond Sterling to say something like that, LOL. I have to say, I am a fan of Suzy. It’s obvious the players like her, too. Sterling is nuts, & I never know what the hell is going on with him guiding me, but I gotta say, he spoke of an “O’Henry irony” the other day…no one else would use that term. They’re like your eccentric relatives…Suzyn does a really good job with her around the league stuff. John is the one who is out to lunch. It would be nice, though, if they had a former player in the booth…let Suzyn call the game and have Cone or somebody along for the ride. Sterling can sing the commercial jingles or something…
also KC is rumored to be looking to be bringing in a legit starter in the off season – they probably match up better than Texas
Do you think KC would offer Butler for Shields?
MTU September 17th, 2011 at 7:11 pm
JAP-
More than 2 I think. Lost track.
///
Too bad, I wanted him for the ninth, too. Somebody was saying that the Rays got good news in that Farnsy’s due back soon. I thought, that’s good news for them?? Despite his improvements, he’ll always be a nightmare.
MTU,
Manny throws plenty hard enough….I watched them pitch against one another awhile back and Manny didn’t seem outclassed…..Moore just located better. Moore is nasty though…..stupid Rays and their player development
Crawford fail
JAP,
I agree that Suzyn would be better than Sterling for the play-by-play. With a knowledgeable color person, she could more than hold her own, even though she can actually sin show tunes.
Manny can throw pretty hard, he’s just had to adjust to the rise in velocity and he’s been reluctant to throw inside at times.
Blake-
I didn’t say that. They just have different styles and weapons.
Who turns out to be better depends on their development and who reaches their ceiling.
Pretty hard to outclass Manny.
I am very impressed with what I saw from Moore.
Just giving credit where it is due.
looks like nerves are getting to Peralta – c’mon 1 more
MTU,
I know how it pains you to give credit to anything associaited with Joe Madden
tomingeorgia, I agree that would be a really nice synergy, Suzy and an ex player to provide nuance. That would be pretty cutting edge of us, having Suzy be the play by play (wo)man! Maybe we should drop it into the suggestion box
. I have nothing against Jones, although she’s everywhere during broadcasts, but Suzyn blew her away with her postgame questions. Jones’ sport is football, she still has an NFL column in the Ledger I think, she can’t compete with Suzy’s baseball knowledge, nor Suzy’s tenure around the Yanks. & she can sing! Also is a breast cancer survivor, which doesn’t surprise me. She’s quite a lady.
I meant Suzyn is a BC survivor, not Jones…
Rays Win! panic….panic….Peter Gammons just hit the panic button
Go cry in a corner, Red Sox Robin!
The red sox just lost…….go rays!!!
Red Sox now 2-56 when trailing after 7.
THHHHHHHHHHHEEEEEEEEEE
RRRREEEEEDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
SSSSSSSSSSSSSSOOOOOOOOOOOOOXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
LLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSSSSSSSSSSSSEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wakefield on the mound for the Sox tomorrow!
at least they have a 200 game winner going tomorrow….no worries
Blake-
For these past few days I’ve actually been forced to root for his team.
I should keep an air sickness bag handy so I have something to throw up in if needed.
The enemy of my enemy is my friend.
For now.
Hope Price will bring it tomorrow.
LOL, Tampa wins. Nieman has done really well against Boston, so not a big surprise, really. Lester has been throwing a ton of pitches in his last couple starts. Rays need to take the last one to have any shot at all.
Heading home soon, where I will watch Yanks replay. THe game I have in my head, put there by Sterling, I’m sure will be quite different than the game I recorded…sigh..
New one –>
JAP,
Another win, and another unlistetnable Sterling. My only question about Suzyn is if she can get fifty commercials in per inning and still give the color person time to get a word in.
I like Suzyn. But as for Kim, I can’t stand her. I used to think she’s all right, but after listening to her daily & her her questions, I find her very annoying and unprofessional at times with her ridiculous questions.
Despair in the FOX booth..
I have to say that i hate maddon…but is so sweet seeing the sux lose!!….can you imagine if they get eliminated, how are they going to try to spin it!!
I respect Maddon so much. I think he’s the best.
