Girardi hates Montero the catcher.
Montero = must watch
A Lineup….Yay!
It look close to the playoff lineup except for Gardner and maybe Chavez at DH. One has to wonder given the recent efforts of our SP what we get from AJ today. Of all the question marks about SP, this recent cycle of high pitch count and walks from CC at least to me is the most troubling. WE have to be able to count on CC to win his starts in the playoffs. The bullpen can’t do it every game when they have to come in with 4 innings to go.
Im at work. This will be my first time missing montero in action.
So….. how ’bout those Red Sox?

personally, am hoping the Yankees roll over and play dead for Tampa (when they play). And play all their subs. Not that it matters, but would even trade a first-round exit in exchange for Boston not making the playoffs

Respectfully, that would be pretty dumb on the Yanks part. The Yanks need HF to give themselves the best options. We need to beat both Boston and TB when they play to secure that.

The yankees can not truly help the rays bec. they play them 4 games before they play the red sox. They have not yet clinched so if they loss 4 games, there is a possibility that they could finish 0-10 and miss the playoff

Interesting, but all that matters is that the Yanks keep winning. It’s not important what anyone else does as long as the Yanks continue to win. The Yanks are focused today on beating Minn, a team right now that lost Mauer and doesn’t have much to play for. Getting beat today by them to me would be a bad sign. At some point we need to get quality starts from our starters, I don’t agree with this majic switch that gets turned on in the playoffs.
Shame- OMG! Actually, I completely forgot to check my e-mail this weekend (I tend to avoid my computer as much as I possibly can on the weekends). No worries.
If the Yanks win today and split with Tampa then they are in good shape….

I don’t either…..but I think maybe its crunch time and they want him focused on hitting right now.
I don’t think Boston can start Wakefield anymore…..I expect to see someone else (Aceves, Bedard, etc) in that series.
Just hope to win each series ! That’ll do it.

Blake, what’s even more disturbing is Tex’s second half numbers are even worst than his first half numbers. He has a Obp. Of .316?? Wow!!!
Orioles might just take one of two or both against the RS pitchers-Wikileaks and Leaky. Then it’s on to Bedud and their one true champion- the Buckettmeister, With some luck the Orioles take 3 of 4.
i still think martin is the position player the yankees can least afford to lose for the playoffs, so why is he catching so much. a win against toronto or the twins doesn’t matter as much as a win against the
red sox so why not rest him in the games that don’t matter as much?
the simple answer is that girardi is not a planner . he makes it up as he goes , and he’ll wake up one morning with an important game against the red sox and say ” gee, martin has played 5 games in a row. i’d better rest him today and have romine catch today”.
martin ideally should not catch more than half the games the rest of the way, but he should catch every important game.
what would be ideal is if the yankees clinch the division title early and decrease the number of important games.

Its so nice to read “they have a 170 million dollar payroll and they are running out that rotation” sounds familiar….
What has the boy genius done lately that has been so genius? He’s given huge overpays to John Lackey and Carl Crawford…..he’s done a no brainer trade for Adrian Gonzalez…..and he’s signed a bunch of garbage filler players like Cameron and Jenks that have done nothing.
He’s left them thin and vulnerable and he should be criticized for it and I hope he is…..

It’ll certainly be interesting if the Yankees have clinched home field going into the last 3 games against Tampa, if the Rays still have a shot at the WC over the Red Sox.

Which, by beating these teams in games prior to the Boston series, would accomplish just that.
If Boston splits with Baltimore, we split with Tampa (and win today), all we need is 1 win against the Sox this weekend to win the division. The more games we win this week (and Boston loses), the lower our number will be.
Yankees can shave their Magic Number by 3 today. Minny will roll over and the BoSux are throwing their 2 worst pitchers today in a DH against the Orioles. Time for Baltimore to play the spoiler! GO O’s !!! LOL
The Yanks will put AJ in the playoff rotation if he pitches well down the stretch…..I think this is heading towards him being the #4 and Hughes being in the pen with Garcia probably left off the ALDS roster….
The Os have Guthrie and Matsz going…..Guthrie is very hit or miss and so is Matsz….maybe one of them will be on today

If Yanks lose today and Sox sweep, Yanks will still have a 4 game lead in the Loss column.
The Yankees need only to look straight ahead with inentions of winning each game. They have no control of what other teams do. They can infuence standings if they wish and laying down so Boston misses the playoffs serves no purpose. The state of Boston’s pitching will see them as early exits no matter who they face in the ALDS.
Time for the Yanks to play good baseball….I know they were all exhausted for the past week or so but they’ve made some boneheaded plays lately. Time for the team to play as well as it’s capable of…

the problem is that he for some odd reason (since he has a degree in engineering) he hasn’t done the calculation that montero’s defense + montero’s offense +another dh’s offense is greater than romine’s defense + romine’s offense+ montero’s offense at dh.
i have my doubts even next year whether girardi will give montero much of a chance to catch.

i’ve believe that regulars that clearly don’t like each should refrain from snide comments about each other or their comments to make the blog more readable .
the invasions of permanent trolls is bad enough. i don’t consider you one of these, but i see no reason for either of us to comment on each other’s baseball comments.
Everyone is forgetting that even though the Red Sox are struggling, they’re still far more likely to make the playoffs than the Rays are.
if cervelli catches again this year it only increase the chance he will have a short career because of a possible re-injury to the concussed area.
cervelli’s best chance of a long career is to let this concussion totally heal and start spring training with a lengthy time between concussions.
Girardi could never have made it as an engineer. He continues doing the same thing over and over even when it has failed for six months. Tex still hitting 3rd vs rhp (I know lhp today) with .219 avg and .317 obp. Yes Joe, eventually Tex might start hitting rhp again, but why suffer through an entire season with still no change? Simply move him back up if/when he starts hitting rhp consistently again. If the lineup was a production line managed by Girardi he would be fired.

i don’t love girardi , but he does have the team in first place by a comfortable margin . i wouldn’t fire him, but i do not understand his lack of creativity and anticipating things that can go wrong.
how he got to the game where he had to choose between two rookie catchers who had never caught a mlb inning is beyond me. he could have easily worked monetro into a few games before that. he also could have had posada catch a little here and there throughout the year.
girardi will still be going into the playoffs without having a back up get much playing time before the playoffs start even though girardi knows the back up may have to play if martin is injured.
girardi just figures he’ll deal with it at the time, which he will if it happens. hopefully martin will catch every inning and it’s a non issue.
if i were manager , just in case, i’d be having posada, romine , and monetro catching some innings.
I too would like to see Montero catch but Burnett may be the issue. He leads the world in wild pitches as it is. Maybe the new defensive alignment with people on base is to have a backup catcher actually backing up the catcher.
Girardi hasn’t screwed up that badly…..they are in first place with a very questionable rotation. He annoys me.sometimes with the lineup but it just goes to.shown that it really doesn’t matter that much where guys hit….
Gjrardi is great at ensuring that an aging team gets enough rest and he’s great at managing a bullpen….those things trump his shortcoming IMO. If Joe was managing Boston he’d punt games before burning Bard up

I like Girardi…..I am hoping that with age he’ll gain more clout in the clubhouse and be less attached to conventional thinking. We have to remember he’s still very young and inexperienced for a big league manager…..
I wouldn’t necessarily say that Joe specifically has the Yankees in first place. Due to the number of quality players a large payroll provides, the Yankees should do pretty well even if the manager is bad. I’m not sure he’s a bad manager, but some of the things he does are maddening.
I also agree that some other catchers should be getting some time. I thought yesterday would have been a good game for Montero to catch. I’m starting to wonder if Montero might even be bumped from the postseason roster for Romine. Romine fits in the Girardi mold…
I think its much easier to judge if a GM is good or not than it is a.manager……
I am glad that Montero catching for 6 innings proved to Girardi that he can’t catch. It’s not like he was catching someone easy like Colon or CC. He caught Garcia who threw 1 million splitters in the dirt and even Martin would have trouble blocking those. Also is Betances ever going to be allowed to pitch an inning? Or are the mop up innings saved for Proctor?!
Yankees are sending out their ‘A’ lineup behind AJ. Lets hope that Good AJ shows up and can give us some hope that he can play a postseason role and gets some offensive support.
I assume that they are going all in to win this one given their success in day games and their hope that AJ has sorted himself out for the time being. A win would really squeeze that magic number, and they have to like that before having to play the Rays so many times down the stretch…

I’m not a former baseball player, either pro or amateur, like some others who post here. So, take this for what it’s worth, coming from someone who’s just a semi-informed observer/fan –
After the 1995 season, the Yankees traded for a light-hitting, defense-first catcher, and had him take over for a primarily offensive-type catcher. Despite a great uproar from the fanbase (myself included), that seemed to work out well, and Joe Torre seemed to know what he was doing.
So, I kind of give Girardi the benefit of the doubt in knowing what players give him and the team the best chance of winning.

I really wanted to see Cano get today’s game off. I know he DHed yesterday but I think he needs a full day away from the game and off of his feet. But In Girardi’s world because he isn’t an older player he doesn’t get tired and is good to play everyday. I think his weird plays on this trip showed that he is fatigued and needs a day.

i’ll use trisha as an example. we coexist on the blog now without any problems because we each have made a decision to refrain from butting heads with each other. i’m sure we still could if we chose to
i see people going after betsy sometimes. i don’t get the point. if you don’t like someone, comment on something else. how hard is that?
