Yankees clinch AL East

Posted by: vmercogliano - Posted in Misc on Sep 21, 2011 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

What a day. After clinching a playoff berth with a 4-2 win in the first game of today’s doubleheader against the Tampa Bay Rays, the Yankees clinched the division with a dramatic win by the same score in the nightcap. The Yankees needed a Boston loss to clinch, and they got it when Baltimore came back to beat the Red Sox, 6-4. CC Sabathia had a strong outing, allowing two runs over 7 1/3 innings, but a solo homer from Sean Rodriguez tied the score at 2-2 in the seventh. Sabathia stayed in to pitch the eighth, eventually loading the bases on a walk to Evan Longoria with one out. Mr. Houdini himself, Dave Robertson, came in and got out of the jam on one pitch, inducing a double play ball from Ben Zobrist.

In the bottom of the eighth, after three pitching changes from the Rays, Jorge Posada was brought in to pinch-hit for Jesus Montero with the bases loaded and two outs. Posada came up clutch with a two-run single, ensuring yet another AL East title for the Bombers.

  6. GreenBeret7 September 21st, 2011 at 11:12 pm

Almost storybook ending. If it couldn’t be Jeter, destiny says that it had to be Posada….and Soriano clinching the game against his former team.

  7. Captain Clutch September 21st, 2011 at 11:13 pm

Now the Rays and Sox will get a break because Girardi will sit guys against them

  8. m September 21st, 2011 at 11:13 pm

Those Yankees are winners. They clinched twice today!

I didn’t realize that the Yankees were so far ahead of the Boston and the Rays.

Let’s go for the sweep and do the same to the Red Sox.

Very happy for Rafael Soriano. A nice capstone on an an otherwise gloomy season for him overall.

I do not care who we play – IMO, if you are a championship team, you beat whoever you have to face, even if it means a Verlander twice.

  14. Tyler September 21st, 2011 at 11:15 pm

Rays have lost 3 in a row but only lost a half a game. They can pull this off. The Yanks will almost certainly have a C lineup tomorrow and then the real fun starts.

This has been a magical season in a lot of ways….DJ3K, Mo 602, Jesus with his 2 homeruns, now Sado comes through……what an enjoyable time I’ve had watching this team.

  22. JimK September 21st, 2011 at 11:17 pm

    —————————————-

both Texas and Detroit will be tough. Obviously the Tigers have Verlander and Cabrera but that Texas lineup is very, very good also. The Yanks will be tested big time but they are a scary matchup for these other teams also. They are awfully deep this year from top to bottom.

  25. ctyankeefan. September 21st, 2011 at 11:18 pm

Sucks that Hughes has to celebrate watching this on TV at home.

  26. Yankees_Fan September 21st, 2011 at 11:18 pm

  27. Yogi Mantle September 21st, 2011 at 11:19 pm

The Tiggers already had clinched a playoff berth, but with the division they are in, that isn’t saying all that much.

  28. BBFan September 21st, 2011 at 11:19 pm

I would not e surprised if Angels steal the WC and Yanks will be instrumental in making that happen.

  29. Betsy September 21st, 2011 at 11:20 pm

Tyler, it still doesn’t matter to me. When you get to the playoffs, all the teams are good – and even those that are the lesser teams, still are dangerous. I don’t have super high expectations for this team – I’m just going to wait and see how it plays out.

  32. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 21st, 2011 at 11:20 pm

    I also JM.

You can’t ever proscribe for another person but I can’t think of a better feeling than to have never worried about this team and never worried about a loss. What a rewarding feeling it is.

  33. Bret The Hitman September 21st, 2011 at 11:20 pm

How about giving it up for Joe Girardi?

AL East Champs with SEVEN games left to rest and prepare for the post season.

You could have never predicted he could do this with Bartolo Colon, Freddy Garcia and an absent Phil Hughes and a rookie.

Not to mention, the 3 biggest superstars on this team performed well below career norms.

    Jeter, Tex and Arod.

Girardi should win manager of the year.

  34. luis September 21st, 2011 at 11:20 pm

This has been a season for the ages, regardless of what happens in the post season, what a way to clinch the division…i don’t know about you guys but i have a good feeling about the PS.

What a time to be a Yankee fan!!

  35. Tyler September 21st, 2011 at 11:21 pm

    Betsy-

You just basically said the same thing as me. The Yanks will have to earn all 11 games if they want to become World Champs. Everybody is 0-0. I bet at the start of last years postseason almost nobody picked a Giants-Rangers WS matchup. Anything can happen in October.

  36. Yogi Mantle September 21st, 2011 at 11:21 pm

This clinch celebration tonight might end up helping the Rays tomorrow, depending on how much they party tonight.

They might not be in great shape to play tomorrow. Though the Mick certainly could play in those adverse conditions. ;)

  37. LockDown September 21st, 2011 at 11:21 pm

It’s incredible how the Yankees have a big say in the redsox/Rays/LAA fight for the wild card. LAA is now tied with the rays.

  38. m September 21st, 2011 at 11:22 pm

Best scene of the day was Alex and Jeter yukking it on the rail.

  39. TheHansons September 21st, 2011 at 11:22 pm

    ————————————–

I am with you on this. Girardi took a lot of heat down the stretch last year for how he handled the team but he’s been great this year. The guy isn’t going to win manager of the year because of public perception of the Yanks but he deserves it. There haven’t been any better than him this year.

  42. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 21st, 2011 at 11:23 pm

I never wavered in my belief that Yanks will win division inspite of all those injuries. And trusted Girardi too. He always had the big picture in mind.

  45. Yogi Mantle September 21st, 2011 at 11:24 pm

  46. kd September 21st, 2011 at 11:25 pm

in all seriousness, posada for the hall? my heart as a yankee fan says yes, my brain says maybe.

    what do you guys think?

  47. Betsy September 21st, 2011 at 11:25 pm

Tyler, lol, you’re right – I’m sorry, I misread your post. This is life in post-season baseball – and I don’t believe in “hoping” or not for an opponent. I am very happy the Yankees took it to the Rays even though it may mean the Sox make it in – they can’t be my concern now.

Benny, and good teams don’t allow themselves to think that way- they have to believe they can beat anyone they face.

  48. Yogi Mantle September 21st, 2011 at 11:26 pm

I think he will make it.

  51. TheStraw September 21st, 2011 at 11:28 pm

Seconded!!! Girardi manager of the year!!

    kd,

Posada is a HOF player, he is top ten in every catching statistic. the only problem he has is that he might be overlooked because of the teammates he share his career with

  55. m September 21st, 2011 at 11:29 pm

Girardi outmanaged Maddon today. ESPN guy went on about in disgust.

Did you guys hear the call on Sean R’s game-tying homerun? Jeez.

I would have a rotation consisting of (not in any order): CC, Nova, Colon, and Burnett. Garcia just scares me too much in a big game with this stuff. Have him be ready in the pen if any of the starters falters early.

Absolutely priceless. Now the Sox could sneak in with the wild card, catch fire, and win it all. But I’m pretty sure that the greatest team ever talk can be put to bed.

  90. m September 21st, 2011 at 11:47 pm

Hughes may be good for the second round.

I still have a feeling that one of our starters will pitch short, so any starters on the outside looking in will probably pitch.

But, the good thing is we have options. And a kickass bullpen. And offense.

  91. luis September 21st, 2011 at 11:47 pm

    Bret,

Cashman deserves a lot of credit for this season as well, without Bart and the chief i don’t know where we would be, and the contributions from the farm system are basicly the footprint he started back in 2006 and is bearing and will keep on bearing fruits for years to come.

Tyler, no way, no way…………Garcia has had a few bad starts; AJ has had 2 seasons worth of them. I’d rather have a guy out there who can pitch and can work his way around lineups through guile than Jekyll and Hyde…….mostly Hyde. I really think that it was never going to be anyone other than Colon and Garcia

  99. LevinsonSF September 21st, 2011 at 11:51 pm

I am so very happy that we won. It was a great team effort. I think credit goes to everyone from the Steinbrenner’s on down. Cashman and Girardi did a great job. We still have the “kids” and the future is really bright. Don’t discount what Larry Rothschild has meant to the team. My I’m one really happy man right now. Yogi, if Hughes ever had a shot, I think that went down the tubes with his back issues. I question how “ok” he’ll be even as a reliever – nevermind performance, but in terms of health. Backs are just tricky thinks.

Trisha props to you for calling all of this. Lots of people gave you a ton of crap but you are a true believer. Nice!!

  105. Betsy September 21st, 2011 at 11:54 pm

Tyler, Garcia had a great year no matter about his 85 MPH fastball………AJ had a horrid year with his 93/94 MPH FB. I don’t think AJ scares in big spots, I just think he’s a very mediocre pitcher (to say the least at this point). If they choose AJ over Garcia, I would not be happy. It’s too bad Freddy tired at this point because he’s been great – but yeah, the rotation is not in great shape

Don’t know if anyone tuned in to MLBN, but Dan Plesac(!) called DRob the best setup man in the game.
    ————————————

Not only is he the best setup man in the game, but I’d argue he would be a top 5 closer in baseball if he was closing. The guy is absolutely phenomenal. The question has long been asked who will take over for Mo… there have been many people championed for that spot but Mr. Robertson has solidified his claim.

  111. Tyler September 21st, 2011 at 11:56 pm

    Betsy-

That velocity just leaves so little room for error. Maybe Garcia finds a second wind in the next couple days and turns it around. I’d love for that to happen. Maybe the Dodgers will lend Kershaw to the Yanks haha.

  112. UnKnown September 21st, 2011 at 11:56 pm

I wonder if Chad is bummed that he is missing out on the Celebration tonight in the clubhouse. Those things have to be fun to be a part of.

  113. Bret The Hitman September 21st, 2011 at 11:56 pm

Cashman saw Hughes plummet in the second half last year but went into this season with Hughes penciled in at #2 privately and AJ in that spot, publicly. He brought in scrap heap acquisitions (Colon and Garcia) and did nothing at the trade deadline. Cashman did nothing foundational to help Girardi pull of this feat. What did he do? Give him credit for striking gold when he went dumpster diving?

Look what Girardi got out of Nova. When he went down, was it Cashman who wanted Nova to work on the slider or Girardi, Rothschild and staff? Think about it.

Cashman shopped the living he11 out of that Ivan Nova. If Cliff Lee took the big money, Nova wouldn’t be here. Same fate as Ian kennedy.

  118. GreenBeret7 September 21st, 2011 at 11:57 pm

Pretty stupid managing by Girardi, huh? Only 95 wins with just 8 left to play. Where are the 3 or 4 idiots like (P)iss Ant and Cupstain Crotchmire, who spent the year complaining about his managing. Only getting 2/3rds of a season out of Rodriguez, Jeter missing for 3 weeks at the same time, missing Chavez for nearly 6 weeks, having to rebuild not only the rotation, but, the bullpen being rebuilt on the fly. Just pathetic job.

  119. Betsy September 21st, 2011 at 11:57 pm

i guess cashman is still a dope.. no big moves in the offseason, kept all his long term nuggets, and got a lot of young guys playing time when it counts.

yep get rid of cashman he is overrated… robertson, nunez, montero, romine, noesi, nova, and on and on… they have no homegrown talents outside of the core 4…………………..

epstein also gave up addtl pieces late in the year and they are stuck with lackey who is burnett with more years left on his deal….

  125. Betsy September 22nd, 2011 at 12:00 am

Bret, really, come on – get over the IPK thing. We wouldn’t have Granderson without trading Kennedy.

I’m not a Cashman fan anymore and frankly I’m ready for him to go, but he stopped wanting to trade Nova awhile ago.

He made a bad mistake with Haren, but where else did you want him to go?

    rb-

Absolutely. I hope Mo pitches until he’s 80 haha. And it is always nice to see these guys from the system becoming great players. It really shuts up those idiots who only talk about the payroll. The homegrown talent on this team is already a huge factor and it’s only going to grow from here.

  128. LGY September 22nd, 2011 at 12:01 am

WTF are you talking about Bret?

Even if they signed Cliff Lee, Nova was going to be the 5th starter unless Andy came back. And when Hughes went down with his arm injury Nova would have been first in line to take his spot.

  129. stuart a September 22nd, 2011 at 12:01 am

what do they do at catcher next year??romine, montero, and cervelli are 3 legit dudes. sure cervelii is porbably a career backup but he is 24 and recently has played real well before his injury.

i think if Martin wants more then a year they say thanks and adios…romine defensively is tremendous….

  133. Bret The Hitman September 22nd, 2011 at 12:02 am

You think Girardi’s vote on keeping those players doesn’t count? It’s probably the main reason why they’re still with the organization and not traded for Javier Vazquez.

  134. LGY September 22nd, 2011 at 12:03 am

  136. stuart a September 22nd, 2011 at 12:03 am

this team has a lot of young talent on the way up…

cano and grandy are the best hitters on the team now. grandy has 1 or 2 more year on his deal let it run out and see when it is over….

swisher 1 more year and then adios.. grandy and swisher are only 30…..

Vizcaino, Melky and Dunn for Javier Vazquez.

Total hose job. He follows that up with a goose egg 2010 offseason despite Hughes’ second half struggles and a goose egg 2011 trade deadline.

What in the bloody he11 is Cashman really doing substantially to help Girardi?

He didn’t push for Nova learning the slider.

If Nova doesn’t emerge in 2011, Yanks don’t make it.

  155. UnKnown September 22nd, 2011 at 12:09 am

Really happy for Soriano that he got to close it out against his former club. Something that I think is being missed in the closing moments of the game tonight.

In regard to AJ, we are in complete agreement, LOL

    Mick,

    Please let it go

  157. LGY September 22nd, 2011 at 12:10 am

    Betsy,

Most pitchers can’t reinvent themselves after they lose their fastball velocity. For the ones that do, it doesn’t happen over night.

Look at Mussina. Or even Garcia who has gotten increasingly more comfortable over the past couple years.

It couldn’t have been easy for Javy to come into the season last year and just have his fastball disappear on him out of nowhere. Javy didn’t even get his act together until July. It takes time.

  158. GreenBeret7 September 22nd, 2011 at 12:11 am

Patrick Corbin (minors), Rafael Rodriguez, Joe Saunders and Tyler Skaggs is what they gave up. They wanted more tan that from NY. If they wanted the same talent trash from NY, Haren would be in NY.

Luis, I didn’t want you to take it the wrong way as I always enjoy discussing things with you…….it’s just that we won’t agree on this so it was moot to continue.

LGY, I’m not upset at Javy nor do I blame him – he didn’t do anything wrong. It’s just frustrating that we ended up, for all intents and purposes, getting screwed. Granted, I doubt he’d be pitching like that in the AL East……..

  164. Yogi Mantle September 22nd, 2011 at 12:15 am

So, Bret, you think Cashman should have traded Montero, Nova and one of the B’s in order to make a move at the trade deadline?

Ubaldo hasn’t done all that great. So, who do you think he should have given up that talent for?

I agree that getting Javy wasn’t a great deal. That I could have done without. Yet, Javy is doing pretty decent this year, and he did well the year prior. He just isn’t cut out for pinstripes and the AL.

Cashman shouldn’t be pushing for pitchers to pick up certain pitches. That should be the pitching coach’s job to see what would work with what the pitchers have.

Sometimes the best moves are the ones not made. Only time down the road will tell that for certain, but I think he has valued some of these prospects pretty well.

  165. Betsy September 22nd, 2011 at 12:16 am

They would not have taken the equivalent from the Yankees……….no way, teams always ask for a lot more. In any case, it’s not something I think about often and in general, that’s the only thing I can really get on Cashman about. He should get a lot of credit for signing Garcia and Colon…….and if we’re going to get on him for not developing Joba and Phil, then we have to give him credit for Nova.

  169. Betsy September 22nd, 2011 at 12:18 am

RB, I think he’ll be a Yankee…………I would also suggest they give him a decent amt of rest. I was not of this mindset before, but now I do wonder about their true feelings about Montero as catcher – they haven’t let him catch one game. For an organization that has stubbornly insisted he can catch, I find it odd. Maybe now that they’ve clinched they’ll let him.

  170. UnKnown September 22nd, 2011 at 12:19 am

Betsy, that is a sore spot on this forum. I haven’t voiced my opinion, but it does irritate me that Montero has had, what, 6 innings(?) behind the plate since he came up. It’s past time for him to be catching. I agree with randy – he should be splitting time next year at catcher. and not strictly as a BUC

  177. GreenBeret7 September 22nd, 2011 at 12:23 am

The Yanks hardly got for nothing for Vazquez. Logan has been pretty damned good for 2 years…better than he ever was with the White Sox or Braves, especially considering they had no other left handed pitchers ready for that roll. They also got the chance to steal a fine young prospect in Bichette. Losing Ramirez may or may not hurt down the road. NYYs needed a starter and got one coming off a Cy Young consideration season.

  180. Betsy September 22nd, 2011 at 12:25 am

RB, it’s not that big of a sore spot with me, but it is worth noting. I’m guessing they brought him up knowing that he had a lot to work on with his catching……that his offense was just too impossible to ignore. If so, then his not catching makes sense. It really doesn’t bother me because for the most part I have no problems with how they’ve handled Montero

  181. BJK September 22nd, 2011 at 12:26 am

I’m usually the first one to call out Girardi on ill-advised moves (like leaving CC in for 128 pitches a week before the playoffs start solely for personal achivement purposes), but trashing him or Cashman on the night they clinched the AL East by beating a hot division rival three times in a row seems kind of silly.

  182. Betsy September 22nd, 2011 at 12:26 am

Well the hope is that Bichette turns out………..if our other pitchers develop, losing Ramirez won’t sting so much. I would have done the deal at the time and I still don’t blame Cashman – he had no way of knowing Javy would blow up for whatever reason.

  183. GreenBeret7 September 22nd, 2011 at 12:27 am

Montero will get his time next year. Romine is no where near ready offensively, and if he is ever to be what he should be, he needs most of next year in Scranton.

  184. JM September 22nd, 2011 at 12:29 am

Perhaps because of the pre-season predictions, perhaps because of all the injuries, this division title seems so much sweeter than usual.

  185. rb from LI September 22nd, 2011 at 12:31 am

I have generally not been critical of Girardi, after all he has gotten this team this far, but I think Montero not catching is all on him. I don’t think Wynegar was blowing smoke when he said that Montero could catch at the MLB level.

  186. Yogi Mantle September 22nd, 2011 at 12:31 am

Montero did catch one game. I think it is more Girardi than anyone else in the organization that isn’t sold on him catching. Girardi was more a light hitting defensive catcher, so its natural that he would lean toward that kind rather than someone more like Piazza or Pudge.

Montero didn’t really get much a chance though, just like Girardi seems to have him pigeon holed as a DH against lefties. That is one beef I have against Girardi.

  187. rb from LI September 22nd, 2011 at 12:34 am

BJK, I’m not trashing anyone, I’m expressing frustration. I think Montero should have a couple of opportunities to catch since he’s been up, especially since Cervelli went down.

I think Montero is going to catch a couple of games in the next week, Romine probably a couple as well. Give Martin some time off….

Anyway, good night Yankee fans! This was a really wonderful day!

Perhaps because of the pre-season predictions, perhaps because of all the injuries, this division title seems so much sweeter than usual.

I think you’re right. This team was counted out and they proved a lot of people wrong.

RB from LI, Hopefully Montero will get more chances now that the division is won, and HFA is not far off either, as both Detroit and Texass are 5 games back for that honor with 7 to play. 3 more wins will sew that up.

BJK, I’m not trashing anyone, I’m expressing frustration. I think Montero should have a couple of opportunities to catch since he’s been up, especially since Cervelli went down.

I wouldn’t be shocked to see Montero catching tomorrow. Seems like a good game to get him back there.

In fact, would love to see Posada at 2nd base and Swisher on the mound.

Oh well. Gotta work this morning, so good night Yankee fans. It certainly is a sweet night for us.

Yogi, that’s exactly what I think. But Montero is worth so much more as a catcher – Girardi needs to think about the big picture.

Anyhow, good night everyone. Let’s go Yankees! :)

Assuming Texas holds on to their 3-2 9th inning lead over Oakland, NYYs will have a 5 game lead on HFA over both Texas and Detroit with 7 games to play.

Jorge has a little Bernie in him….

“I thought it was the ninth; I really did,” Posada said. “I thought the game was over. And when I saw Tex scoring the second run of the inning and nobody was moving, it was kind of surreal.”
