LoHud Yankees chat tomorrow
Let’s do a chat tomorrow. Why not? Stop by here at noon, I’ll be answering questions about the Yankees heading into the postseason. My guess is that the rotation will come up. Probably Jesus Montero as well. And maybe the role of Jorge Posada.
In other words, we’ll be talking about the exact same things were talking about in spring training.
Still no lineup and Joe Girardi isn’t addressing the media until 5 p.m. The clubhouse is basically empty except for Hector Noesi, Phil Hughes and Mariano Rivera.

Is Phil getting another cyst looked at? #pedrogomezreporting
Phil looking for a contact buzz.
“Not sure when Raul Valdes was put on waivers by st. Louis and not sure why the Cards put him on the block, but, NYYs picked him up on 16 August when the Yanks had a half a game lead on Boston. Every team in baseball passed on him and in his 2 appearances with 2.2 innings, he could prove to be really valuable. We’ll see this weekend against Boston. 2 singles, 0 runs, 1 walk and 5 of the 8 outs that he’s recorded are strikeouts. Also valuable against Texas.”
GB7,
Good post. Wasn’t quite sure what his pedigree was, so thanks for that.
I’ve been impressed with the lefty, too. He’s fit in seamlessly.

M,
Valdez was an escapee from Cuba a few years ago. He’s 33 years old but a lot of international experience. He’s sort of the left handed version of Ayala. Ayala was another pitcher that has almost been completely ignored or scoffed at because he doesn’t throw hard, has some age and generally not thought of as any good. Hard to say that his 50 games and 45 or so innings are unimportant, because, if not for those games and innings, a lot of pitchers were going to get overworked to cover them. Again, not very flashy, but, he’s done quite a job this year. Sort of fills the David Weathers/Graham Lloyd spot for NYYs only in the regular season. Hopefully, they’ll get some big post season outs this year

LHP Manny Banuelos, RHP Adam Warren and RHP David Phelps will join Yankees tomorrow for non-game activities.
Weird. I really need to stop posting tweets. Always a step too late
GB7,
I know I want Ayala on the roster. Let’s see how Valdes (I think that’s the way he spells it) does this weekend. He’ll have his chances.
GB7,
Thanks for that. All these guys are easy to root for.
BTW, very little mention is given to the schedule and pace the Yankees are playing right now. They aren’t even playing their A or B lineup at times due to the pace and DH. Good job by Girardi and the players for sucking it up and powering their way to the division title.

sorry!
“Probably Jesus Montero as well.”
Any reason not to get him a bunch of time behind the plate this week?
sorry!

Don’t worry. Erin already rubbed it in yesterday
Seriously though it is kind of weird we ended up posting it at the same time when it was tweeted like 15 minutes earlier.
Tom,
It’s always great to see the young kids with hammer curves, wipeout sliders and blazing fastballs, or hitters with 40 homer power, but, still nice to see these guess off of the streets that look like everyone else not blessed with those things, guys that make you think, “Hey’ I could be that guy. Nothing special about him.” The Whitey Ford, Billy Pierce, Bobby Shantz types that would never get a look today.
I just caught this from the earlier post:
“You couldn’t have written it any better,” Curtis Granderson said. “You had Jeter with the 3,000, you had Mariano with the 602, and Jorge Posada was the final piece.”
How about… and your Game 2 ALDS starter…. Andy Pettitte!
I don’t see Girardi giving away any games by sitting everyone. He still wants HFA and he’s the type that won’t toss games to get the more favorable team into the post season. That tends to backfire. Players will get their rest and those closing in on personal targets will get that chance. Sabathia will get one more start to win 20 (which is probably why he left Sabathia in last night). I would think that Montero and Romine will both get at least one start and Rodriguez still needs his at bats.

I agree. Not to mention the fine line between getting our guys some rest and keeping them sharp.

GB7,
Maybe Cashman has learned to see the virtue of “non-exceptionable” players now. He brought Chavez, Colon, Garcia and Jones in, much to our benefit. Maybe he can see the virtue of a nondescript Cuban refugee lefty with a Portuguese name, and mound skills.

Give him some time. Another year or two in pinstripes and they’ll be Suxers.
May i just say i liked Russ Martin before, but now i REALLY like him…
They just announced on teh Mets game that this year, the Gold Glove for outfielders is going to be split into Left, Cetner adn Right. About time.
Tom,
you remember all of those great Yankee teams. It was the guys like Ayala and Valdes that really made those teams so tough. I remember back around 1960 when they picked up a little left handed reliever that washed out with a few teams….Luis Arroyo. In 1964, they picked up a washed up starter for a minor leaguer and stuck him in the bullpen….Pedro Ramos. If they could have gotten him on the roster as an injury replacement, NYYs would have won the ’64 WS instead of St. Louis.
Martin and I have something in common-
I also HATE the red sox!!

Gardner is a lock then!

That’s what I’m thinking.
GB7: ha. That’s exactly what Girardi did last season, if you recall.
Question:
I thought we didn’t like it when Yankees players were candid about wanting to defeat an opponent?
Gammons: Francona’s job may be in jeopardy
http://www.csnne.com/09/22/11/.....eedID=3352
Time to give some props to Larry Rothschild for all the hard work he’s done with the pitching staff since the 1st day of spring training.
Not his fault that the skull of Burnett can’t be penetrated.
Given a choice, Burnett is off the postseason roster. Luis Ayala, Cory Wade, and Raul Valdez are deserving. Girardi has said that he likes what he’s seen of Valdez and will give him more opportunities for the final 7 games.
In recent years, good bullpens can be difference makers in the postseason.
Francona would land a job in a seocnd if he’s let go. He’d be better off anyway. Doesn’t have ulcer issues to the point he spits up blood?
Theo is the one that needs to get the axe. Their overall system is in bad shape. How can they not have a warm body to throw against the Yankees in Bedard’s spot?
Tom
“[The Red Sox] were having a great deal of success with players of lesser ability,” said Cashman. “I studied what they were doing to some degree, adjusted accordingly, brought the Yankees up to speed, brought us into the 21st century.”

So the Sox have now decided to place the blame on their manager and not their list of crappy players.
Lackey 5/82.5, there to make AJ Burnett look like Cy Young.
Dice-K: One year in a sox year contract isnt bad i guess.
Youkilis constantly hurt
Bard tanking?
Crappy pen.
I hate the Sox but to blame Terry for this mess is assinine.
Must admit it is a lot of fun watching the Red Sox fans squirm. Don’t see them here as much either.
GB7,
There were so many of those guys in the 50s and 60s it’d be hard to name them all. A good ballplayer with the right attitude can make a lot of difference. By the way, didn’t Arroyo win 19 games one year, IN RELIEF?
Oh and how can i forget Mr. 142 Million man, Crawford.
What a find that was eh Theo???
who could have guess paying a guy that never hit 20 homeruns in a season 142 mil could backfire?
Yankees are going to have to pay Granderson and Cano a boatload after next season no?
I will celebrate the red sox demise once
they eliminated from the playoffs.
Until then, to me they are still a dangerous team.
that was roy face
Tom,
Arroyo was 5-1 in 1060 and 15-5 in 1961 with 29 saves. He did have 10 blown saves in ’61, though. 64 inherited runners and 32 scored. He could be scarey at times, but he did pretty well for 2 years.
LGY -
Good read, that article.
The sox rooted for us this week when we were in stretch mode
Next week won’t be as easy in getting ready for playoffs mode
Crawford got off to a bad start. He’s still not playing well, but he’s had some big hits in the course of the season. I think he might do okay next season, unless he becomes the face of failure should the Sox complete their historic collapse.
The dumb part is that Carl Crawford’s real value is in his athleticism. But LF at Fenway negates the need for that particular skill. At any rate, he’s not a homerun kind of player, so no matter what he’s getting overpaid.
And he’s stuck in his ways. Refusing to change positions or leadoff. Someone wants to pay me $20M, I’ll do what I’m asked.
Mick,
Absolutely correct. Elroy Face. Failing memory, but not many around here have even heard of Roy Face,, I’d reckon.
somehow, in spite of the money, I don’t think crawford is happy in beantown
arroyo saved whitey’s arse in many a game, in fact , if not for whitey, luis would be unheard of.
The mess in Boston is most certainly not due to Terry Francona.
Obviously, I don’t know what goes on in that clubhouse. Manny being Manny; Ortiz crashing Francona’s pregame press conference and shouting that he needed to talk to Francona, NOW!; nobody telling Lackey to cut the prima donna crap; players badmouthing Ellsbury last year when he was injured and misdiagnosed by the Red Sox doctors – this may all come down to lack of discipline and leadership in the clubhouse.
But, the collapse of the team has more to do with poor pitching – both starting and relief – and players breaking down and not performing, and lack of team depth, than anyting else.
Theo put that team together, and did not have the depth, either at the ML level or the MiL level.
As pointed out above, the Yankees had their share of injuries this year, to starters, relief pitchers, and everyday players. But, they kept winning, due to depth. Colon, Garcia, Wade, Ayala, Noesi, Pendleton, Chavez (when he was healthy), Nunez, Cervelli.
All that didn’t happen just by accident. Cash deserves a lot of credit for putting it together.
In fact, I think Francona deserves some degree of credit for keeping it going as long as he has. It’s not his fault that Bard and Aceves are falling apart now. For too long, they were the only reliable guys out there.
If Francona is let go, it will be done to save Theo’s rear. And that’s not fair.
Oh, absolutely Crawford is most likely not happy. It’s my understanding that Crawford found out the Sox had an investigator tailing him before they signed him. He must have found out after he signed his contract. Otherwise he would probably playing in Anaheim.
Cano’s salary as per baseball-reference
2011 28 New York Yankees $10,000,000
2012 29 New York Yankees *$14,000,000 $14M Team Option, $2M Buyout
2013 30 New York Yankees *$15,000,000 $15M Team Option, $2M Buyout
Granderson’s salary as per baseball-reference.
2011 30 New York Yankees $8,250,000
2012 31 New York Yankees $10,000,000
2013 32 New York Yankees *$13,000,000 $13M Team Option, $2M Buyout Option increases to up to $15m with top 5 MVP finish and/or All-Star Game appearances in 2011 or 2012
Both will be due 15 million in 2013.
All that didn’t happen just by accident. Cash deserves a lot of credit for putting it together.

Tell that to the geniuses that frequent this newer dumbed down version of Lohud.
If francona is let go he will be unemployed for about 10 minutes……
