Pregame notes: “There’s a big, green blob out there”

The rain has slowed a little bit, but it’s still coming down here at Yankee Stadium, and the tarp is still on the field. Nothing about the scene suggests a baseball game is remotely close to happening.

“All I know is when I look at the radar there’s a big, green blob out there coming this way,” Joe Girardi said. “We’re right in the middle of it… I don’t know what they’re going to do. The other night we waited until 11:15 to start a game and we played in the rain the whole time, and we played during what I thought was more than moderate rain at times. I have no idea what we’re going to do.”

Although Girardi said there’s no contingency plan he’s heard about. A doubleheader on Sunday seems to make sense, but there’s been no sort of announcement.

Girardi said he might change his lineup based on conditions, but as long as it stops raining, he thinks the field might drain fast enough that he would feel confident sending his regulars out there.

Speaking of sending regulars out there…

“My lineup is going to be very representative every day,” Girardi said. “I have plans. I have already kind of even staked it out where one guys or two guys get this day off, and two guys get this day off, and you’re going to see seven of our regulars in there. Some of that’s going to be Chavy and Nuney who have platooned for us and they’ve been regulars at points during the season.”

• Girardi’s still not ready to announce his postseason rotation — obviously — but he did more or less lock up two spots. Not that this is a big shock, but he agreed that CC Sabathia and Ivan Nova are both no-doubt ALDS starters. “We have to make some decisions, there’s no doubt about it,” Girardi said. “But I think you’re safe to say that.”

• Could A.J. Burnett start an ALDS game? “Anyone could get a start in the ALDS,” Girardi said. “That’s where we are right now. I’ll continue to evaluate, and a lot of it depends on who we play.”

• Also not a huge shock, but Girardi made it clear that he plans to have Russell Martin start every playoff game behind the plate. “I think he’s more than capable of playing every day, every playoff game behind home plate, so that’s not really a question in my mind,” Girardi said. “Can he do that? I have no problem doing that.”

• Ultimately, Girardi said he’s not close to finalizing any postseason roster decisions. He hasn’t even met with his staff to talk about it. “We’ve had some long days and we’ve been at the ballpark a lot,” he said. “I think you wait and see how things play out. We’ll have meetings next week and that’s when we’ll really begin to talk about it.”

• Francisco Cervelli said he hasn’t been dizzy this past week, and he’s still holding out hope that he’ll be healthy enough to play in the postseason. That said, he’s also planning to be very cautious because he doesn’t want to get too aggressive with a head injury.

• Joba Chamberlain also rejoined the Yankees this afternoon (on his birthday). He made 30 throws from 30 feet pregame — with Larry Rothschild — and he said he’ll be at that distance for a while. He said that he’s a month to six weeks ahead of schedule, and he thinks he’ll be able to throw off a mound by spring training.

PeteAbe and Adrian Gonzalez kind of look alike ? No ?

  2. Betsy September 23rd, 2011 at 6:24 pm

Happy birthday to Joba, who is exactly a bunch of years and 1 day younger than me…….

I think Garcia should be the #3 starter…….Colon appears toast to me; I don’t even think he could contribute out of the pen

If Russel’s comments are what motivates the Sox then I’m not worried about them in the playoffs anyway. Fighting for a playoff spot should be enough anyway. I’m glad that Martin feels that way.
    ———————————————————————————————-
RS are trying to make the post season. Russell’s comments should have no effect on them. And Russell should keep his mouth shut. His first year on the Yankees and he hates the RS. Take a clue from Jeter and CC and show some class.
And get your .246 average up and stop swinging at the first pitch you see.
Or is he ticked because the RS didn’t offer him more money than the Yanks.
    ———————————————-

Nothing that Russell said was classless. I like it. The Yanks need a little attitude against Boston. I’d much rather him hate them than be smiling with them and joking around. Do that in the offseason on the golf course.

There was a scene from the Mentalist last night. Jane (?) was in a prison card game. One of the stooges (he’s a character actor I’ve seen before) in the game could have been Gonzalez’s twin. Just take a sharpie and draw some facial hair.

Anyone watch The Office? Too early to form an opinion, but all I know is that they’ve totally destroyed Pam’s character.

  5. Bronx Jeers September 23rd, 2011 at 6:29 pm

I’m sort of gambling that they won’t play tonight by not heading to the Stadium. It’s been a rough, rough season for Friday night tix holders like myself. Lots of bad weather and bad baseball by the Yanks. I think their Fri home record is 3-8.

  6. Tyler September 23rd, 2011 at 6:29 pm

    Betsy-

I think Garcia is almost the 3rd starter by default. He’s had a great year (as has Colon considering the expectations) but as we’ve talked about before, has been shaky as of late. I just think he slides into that role and maybe he surprises. That will likely be a road start in front of a hostile crowd so having a veteran out there will help a lot.

The cost of a roof in NY in 2008 money is not the same as Seattle money in 2000 or Houston/Phoenix money in 2000. It could possibly cost and additional $500 mil to $750 mil more for the roofing structure and making changes in the complete building itself to strengthen it.

    —————————————————————————————

Is that with or without paying off the fine gentleman that produce cement.

    ————————————————————————————————————————-

yes, and then there’s the gentlemen that find certain zoning laws that pop up, and then the gentlemen hired to haul off the trash. I’m not sure if you know who they work for, but…God, I love Rodney Dangerfield in “Back To School”.

Two kinds of concrete. The type you build with, but probably shouldn’t and the kind they make overshoes out of if you refuse to build with the other type.

  8. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 23rd, 2011 at 6:31 pm

I have to believe I am living right in my little corner of the universe. I am someone who believes in paying forward, and I try to do it all the time. My pro bono law is part of that. The other day one of my friends out of the blue said that she believes the reason I am so lucky at our casino (I do okay, nothing magnificent) is because I pay forward.

Well I am exuberant about the possibility of a rainout. So we play a double header on Sunday with Lackey pitching the second game. The Yankees get another day to rest and as was mentioned on WEEI, it will kill them because Lester will have to pitch Wednesday on short rest if he goes tomorrow, a game they will probably need to win. :)

I have abundant blessings in my life, the kind that are meaningful to me. I do believe that what you put out comes back to you. After so asiduously watching the Sux this season and rooting for every team they played, it wasn’t going to feel right for me not to get to watch the Yankees pummel them into the ground. I mean I’ve waited the entire season for this moment.

So if the game is rained out – or even delayed – I will believe that is some of the good coming back on me. Whatever floats your boat, right?

I’m going to throw on the DVR just in case.

GO YANKEES – NOW AND FOREVER!!!!

Have a great night all. I’m venturing out into the rainy night to go to a play I committed to a month ago. Drat.

    ;)

  9. LGY September 23rd, 2011 at 6:32 pm

    Venezuelan watch tonight.

Will be interesting to see how Chief fares and what Montero does in his second look at Lestaaah.

  10. luis September 23rd, 2011 at 6:32 pm

    Tyler, Betsy,

I beg to disagree…..i have stated before why, i think it all depends on how AJ and Bart perform from here on out….Having said that, i don’t think either one of them seems a much better option as of right now

  11. RMS September 23rd, 2011 at 6:34 pm

    Tyler

We will just agree to disagree. I just prefer the way Jeter, Mo, CC and other Yanks handle things and that is with class.

  12. Tyler September 23rd, 2011 at 6:34 pm

    luis-

Colon looked spent to me last night. He was pretty good in Anaheim but that’s all that I’ve seen out of him really since the allstar break. AJ just scares the daylights out of me.

  13. Red Robin September 23rd, 2011 at 6:36 pm

Adrian Gonzalez’s facial shape has that weasel-ly feel to it,

his facial hair only accentuates that impression.

  14. Faiaz September 23rd, 2011 at 6:36 pm

    Red Robin(yummmmmmmmm)

Only if Peter got rid of the goatee(but then we wouldn’t be able to tell where his chin starts or his neck ends), dyed his hair red and rocked a mohawk, he would look exactly like Hoggish Greedly from Captain Planet.

  16. Tyler September 23rd, 2011 at 6:38 pm

    RMS-

I love that too. That’s what makes the Yanks as great as they are. But I really don’t think what Martin said is that bad. He hates the Sox. Big deal. But I see where you are coming from also.

  17. David in Cal September 23rd, 2011 at 6:38 pm

Could the Yanks go into one of the post-season games with no starter? That is, plan to have 9 innings pitched by some combination of Wade, Ayala, Logan, Soriano, Robertson and Mo. On the negative side, this would deplete their bullpen. On the positive side, this group of pitchers has been much more effective than whoever is 4th starter. In fact, they’ve been more effective than Freddy Garcia’s recent starts.

  18. PittsburghYankeeFan September 23rd, 2011 at 6:38 pm

This game is not being played. Doubleheader on Sunday, that’s the way it will have to be. Given that, how about CC for 50 pitches in game 1, then Noesi?

  19. luis September 23rd, 2011 at 6:38 pm

    Trisha,

Enjoy your play!, it doesnt look great weather wise, so probably you ain’t going to miss much, besides if it is a rainout, it will only hurt the sux….but i would love to have baseball tonight though.

    LGY,

If the chief fares well against them, that pretty much will seal his PS spot….Montero should fare well against Lestat, i would love to see him adjust to the off speed offerings he is been getting lately.

  20. jacksquat September 23rd, 2011 at 6:39 pm

A doubleheader may mess up the Red Sox pitching a little, but it also means considerably lesser lineups for each of those two games for the Yankees because Girardi will have very few if any players play both.

Jeers, I think a bunch of us are. No desire to repeat that 4 hour rain delay game vs. Boston in June. I am all over a Sunday DH though.

    Trisha, have a good night!

  24. yankeefeminista September 23rd, 2011 at 6:41 pm

jacksquat, I thought Joe G. did a good job with the Wed. doubleheader as far as our two lineups went. We have more depth than Boston.

  25. luis September 23rd, 2011 at 6:42 pm

    Tyler,

You are absolutely right…..the thing is that i don’t trust Garcia’s stuff against good a patient lineups, i think right now is like pick your poison and go from there

Yeah, it started out as making tape recorders and Rodney pointing out that the Japanese would kill them on the labor market.

Sally kellerman was a knockout back then. What great legs.

  27. yankeefeminista September 23rd, 2011 at 6:43 pm

I love what Martin said, but I also am fine with how individual players decide to conduct themselves whether it be fiery/in your face or low key/classy. The trash talking or lack thereof, or the pats on the backs to the opposition or the lack thereof really have nothing to do with how Martin, Jeter, Alex or anyone else who matters on this team plays the game. I would go to war with these guys, bar none.

  28. BX33 September 23rd, 2011 at 6:44 pm

Now that I think about it, Gonzalez does look a lot like Pete Abe

    Thornton Mellon, yours truly

  30. jacksquat September 23rd, 2011 at 6:44 pm

I wasn’t saying Girardi should have full strength lineups in both games, just that’s what would probably happen (no one playing both games).

In what case would you bring AJ to pitch?

  35. Shame Spencer September 23rd, 2011 at 6:54 pm

Ps – count me in as a Russell ‘I hate the Red Sox’ Martin supporter.

Its about damn time somebody said what Russell Martin said. I’ve had enough of this cozy rivalry. Munson, Piniella, Nettles, etc.DESPISED those rotten Red Sox teams in the 70′s. Let’s get back to those days.

  41. BX33 September 23rd, 2011 at 6:57 pm

AJ still has great stuff. I’d throw him out there and pray for the best. After all… isn’t that what we’ll do with Hughes/Garcia/Colon?

At least Burnett can throw 95 and has a good curve. The key is to not giving him a long rope.

  42. luis September 23rd, 2011 at 6:58 pm

    JAP,

He could….but will he?, i think Garcia would fare better against the Rangers but not against the Tigers or Red sux….IMO the best case scenario is for Bart getting back to form, but yesterday he looked shot

  43. J. Alfred Prufrock September 23rd, 2011 at 6:59 pm

jacksquat, if AJ could give us five relatively clean innings, you’d take that. He could potentially do that. Colon, at this point, looks like he’s shot his wad. Hughes has the back thing, Freddy has lost his splitty… It may come down to throwing AJ and saying a prayer.

  44. J. Alfred Prufrock September 23rd, 2011 at 7:02 pm

luis, they might have to shut down Bartolo until then, if he’s our Game 3 guy, because he does look spent.

Take out the money players are making today and keep players on their original teams longer or forever. That should do the trick

  47. jacksquat September 23rd, 2011 at 7:03 pm

I’d take 5 good innings from AJ, sure. Problem is he is totally unreliable and can change from great to terrible in an instant. He’s too much of a crapshoot for me.

I’d think Hughes is the favorite for #3 *if* he looks healthy and pitches well in his next start. I think it’s basically going to be one start tryouts this next time through the rotation.

I’m also leaning toward the curve and a prayer approach.

  49. Yogi Mantle September 23rd, 2011 at 7:03 pm

Hard to say what was expected of Colon yesterday. Many teams lose the day after they clinch and celebrate. I tend to doubt that he passed up on celebrating, so he might have been a bit bitten by the dog, even with 5 hour energy drinks.

  50. yankeefeminista September 23rd, 2011 at 7:03 pm

Let’s see what happens in games 1 and 2. But when AJ has his stuff, right now he is still our best pitching option if he has that curve working. Even with the dip in FB velocity… If he gets out of whack you get him out of there. You also have the offday in between so you should have a fresh pen. If he isn’t on, you bring in reinforcements. But let’s see how he pitches in his next outing. Ditto, let’s see how the other candidates work.

Right, that’s the problem. He can go south on a dime. But optimally, he may also be our best option. If Hughes is himself, oh yes, I agree we go with PJ. But I’m dubious when it comes to backs.

  53. yankeefeminista September 23rd, 2011 at 7:07 pm

Hughes has to be back pitching to be in consideration. When AJ loses it, you have to yank him, granted. You can’t stay with him once his mechanics go south. I still wanted to see everyone’s next starts.

    Time to tune into Rays-Jays…

  57. Joe from Long Island September 23rd, 2011 at 7:11 pm

    game postponed, dh on sunday.

ok for yanks, brutal for red sox. as jack curry and bob lorenz were saying, red sox will have harder time trying to play and win 2 on sunday than yanks, who have already clinched and can use swb team. plus, if sox have to win last game, lester will have only 3 days rest, at end of season. and, lester’s already struggling past few starts.

on another note, francona looked a bit testy in his pregame. if i had team leaders, such as ortiz, saying they were cooked, i’d be testy also.

i guess that’s what the sox call veteran leadership.

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)
