Cashman doesn’t have an MBA? Let him go get one in Chicago.

Are you trying to bait me? What’s the point of that?

    Bret,

I told you I wasn’t insulted. Hard to do.

And I’m not bandwagoning since I said beforehand he wouldn’t be worth it.

If I’m gloating over Crawford’s season, it’s because I was right. Even if it is only 1/7th, it’s been a disastrous 1/7th. I feel sorry for Crawford himself because he seems like a good guy, but he knew that he would be living in a fishbowl when he signed with them.

As for the rest of the contract, history has shown that the tail end of 7 year contracts for a player in their 30′s is not pretty. But even if he lives up to his potential, is that worth it? No. You got plenty of relatively light hitting OF who can play good defense that come through the system every couple of years.

  4. Bret The Hitman September 23rd, 2011 at 3:51 pm

    m,

You’re partially right for now. 6/7 more to go.

  5. m September 23rd, 2011 at 3:52 pm

Sorry about that other thing. I wasn’t trying to bait you. Just poking fun because I know that you’d love for Cash to leave. And one of the top business schools in the country is in Chicago. Unless something’s changed in the last 20 years. :P

Also, you made assumptions that he had an MBA and never played real baseball. Both were wrong?

Just having some fun. Sorry if you were insulted.

  6. m September 23rd, 2011 at 3:54 pm

So all this running around, you’re saying that Cashman should have signed Crawford?

And your reasons in no particular order are:

    1) They missed out on Lee
    2) Prefer him over Gardner
    3) He’s got a certain skill set that might have been worth*slightly* overpaying for?

  7. J. Alfred Prufrock September 23rd, 2011 at 3:54 pm

While I have about zero interest in running down Carl Crawford, I would say that Fenway Park is not a good home park for him.

He will probably make some sort of adjustment, but it remains less than ideal for him.

Bret The Hitman September 23rd, 2011 at 1:55 pm

Had the Red Sox waited one week before signing Crawford, Cashman would’ve been far more serious about him after missing out on Lee…and he knows it. This was a PR puff piece to erase the fact that Cashman very foolishly put all his eggs in the Cliff Lee basket in the off season and had nowhere to turn after Crawford was off the board. He’s also trying to pump the value of Montero and Gardner in that piece. Gardner is a fringe major leaguer. I hope he gets a Juan Pierre deal in the future (4 years 40 million)…just not from Cashman.

    ——————

Are these also your words? Because thats how you started this debate…. talking about how Cash should not have been so enamored by Lee because it caused him to somehow miss out on Crawford (a player he never wanted).

I’m not calling you a troll in any respect, but c’mon, your whole debate has been Crawford centric. If you don’t like Cash why don’t you just say, “I just don’t like the guy” instead of throwing out criticism and then claiming you’re not criticizing him but only pointing out that another person could conceivably do the job (something we’re all very well aware of, btw). If you’re gonna be critical of him, just own it, no big. People are gonna disagree but if you’re really passionate about your beliefs who cares, right? Even saying “I’m not being critical but someone else could do his job” is completely passive aggressive. You just don’t like the guy. Own it.

If the Red Sox fold all the way to 3rd in the WC race, then a certain RSaux Manager may be looking for work!

If Dice-K hadn’t had 53 different pitches gyroing from his arm he might have made it. But just practicing those pitches 5 times a day each killed his arm. Why that is 265 pitches a day!

I Lackey had changed his spots, I mean name to Champey, then he would have been successful! A name can be so trying to a fellow!

If someone could actually catch a pitch and make a throw to 2B or 3B then the RSaux would have been undefeated. Of course having to pitch Niekro, I mean Wakefield (which one is older???) caused the catchers to burn out. I mean running down those knuckleballs and having to wait until the stop simply wore out the best tandem catching force outside of well umm the 61 Yanks! LOL!

If gritty hadn’t gotten so dirty the RSaux wouldn’t have had to wash Peds uni so much and with all the drying it shrunk too much for him to be effective really!

Lastly Big Poopy had to go on a religious diet giving up strong drink made with special shakes that he wasn’t himself. Why if it hadn’t been for all the HGH alphabet soup he would have plumb tuckered out. Saux fans weren’t ever worried though because LARS was available!

My schedule is wide open tonight, so I am free to wait through a 4-5 hour rain delay :)

Robbie’s like, dudes, no one turns a DP like I do, and no one has a swing like mine. Said through a smile that no one can match, either :D .

  14. Bret The Hitman September 23rd, 2011 at 4:00 pm

    Shame,

My words were only meant to suggest that banking the whole off season on Lee was not an optimal strategy.

Going into the year with AJ Burnett as the #2 starter without hedging on offense was not an optimal strategy.

    And I’m neutral on Cashman.

  15. m September 23rd, 2011 at 4:01 pm

Best case scenario: A rain shortened win.
2nd Best case scenario: Lester starts and the delay is so long that he’s burned for the day.

  19. J. Alfred Prufrock September 23rd, 2011 at 4:02 pm

…Vizcaino and Melky were bad enough…

  20. m September 23rd, 2011 at 4:05 pm

Thanks for the clarification, I was wondering where you stood.

I think Cashman was smart to stash the money he would have spent on Lee or Crawford (good thing he signed a week before Lee did).

We’ll need it when a good opportunity for a #1 or #2 presents itself.

  21. Bret The Hitman September 23rd, 2011 at 4:06 pm

An upgrade in LF would be nice too.

  22. Joe from Long Island September 23rd, 2011 at 4:06 pm

I realize this is hindsight, but the worse move Theo made this past offseason was not signing Crawford (who is really misplaced on that team and ballpark), but in not having the foresight to re-sign Beltre and trade Youk. I think that combined non-/move will really haunt the team for a while.

That doesn’t even speak to the mistake of not getting more pitching depth.

Besides not having Beltre, Youk may continue to be a drag on them in 2012. Trading him will not be easy, not at this point in his career. Someone would really have to be banking on a big comeback year – not impossible, but tough.

  23. J. Alfred Prufrock September 23rd, 2011 at 4:08 pm

We do have Jones to put in left field for power and for LHP. He’s also much better defensively than given credit for on this site.

  24. Joe from Long Island September 23rd, 2011 at 4:08 pm

Bret – I agree, an uprgrade in LF would be nice. Not imperative, but nice. Brett does drive me crazy from time to time. I think he’s still a better value than Crawford in Fenway, though.

  25. Bret The Hitman September 23rd, 2011 at 4:08 pm

Hopefully Youk is done. If he’s not, then it was the right move to bring in Adrian Gonzalez.

I really hope Youk is done which would make passing on Beltre the wrong move.

  26. 108 stitches September 23rd, 2011 at 4:08 pm

It doesn’t rain at Tropicana Field and the Rays will be looking to gain a 1/2 game on Boston at the expense of the Toronto Blue Jays.

  27. jacksquat September 23rd, 2011 at 4:09 pm

Bazillions of dollars spent on this stadium and they didn’t get a convertible…

  28. Joe from Long Island September 23rd, 2011 at 4:09 pm

Prufrock – you’re right on Jones. He seems to have picked up his game the second half of the year. I read somewhere (wish I could remember where) that he picked up his work mid-season, when he figured out that the Yankees are not like other teams (Jeter, Alex, etc…)

  29. m September 23rd, 2011 at 4:10 pm

In hindsight, the smart thing for Theo to have done is:

1)Trade Youk and his friendly contract after you traded (and inked yuk, yuk) Gonzalez
2)Signed Beltre with Crawford’s money or a portion of it anyway.

  30. upstate kate September 23rd, 2011 at 4:10 pm

I am fairly certain that Verlander also said he would vote for himself for MVP. I can’t find a link, but I did find this:

    Joe
Jones’ mom talked to him about his swing. Did she talk to him about his work ethic as well?

  32. Joe from Long Island September 23rd, 2011 at 4:13 pm

m @ 4:10 – yes, absolutely. But, that would have taken a lot of foresight.

FWIW, supposedly Lucchino/Henry do not like dealing with Boras. I wonder if that factored into their decision to pass on Beltre. We know it messed up their pursuit of Teixeira.

  33. J. Alfred Prufrock September 23rd, 2011 at 4:13 pm

Maybe Toronto will be a little casual about this series. They detest the Red Sox as much as they dislike/resent us.

Any news about Swisher and his thoughts/potential cameos in the Moneyball movie?

Swisher headlines the really good moneyball draft class:

    http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_.....ass-review

I’ve seen that it has good review, but I can’t look at the suddenly boyish looking Brad Pitt without thinking that Angelina has sucked the life out of him. :P

  37. Shame Spencer September 23rd, 2011 at 4:16 pm

Bret – I still think you’re being passive aggressive in your many non-criticisms but *shrugs* its no big to me. We do agree that Theo’s passing on Beltre was his worst move, though. Another move/non-move I am actually still very surprised was that he didn’t resign VMart. They’ve actually gotten a lot more production from their catching platoon this season than I think even they expected… but you have to wonder how that tandem is going to look next season with Saltamynameistooridiculouslylongtobothertolearnhowtospellit trying to repeat his success this year.

That’s interesting. If so, good for him for going after it. Andruw is as smooth as any still, gliding to the spot, just with more diminished range, obviously. It’s a shame that knee is troublesome to him. Joe has so far picked Jones’ spots well, I think.

  40. Erin September 23rd, 2011 at 4:18 pm

Saltalamacchia is young. It’s disappointing he’s working out for them.

  42. m September 23rd, 2011 at 4:20 pm

Jones looks lighter to me. And apparently he lives in the clubhouse.

Good to see him taking his baseball and position as a veteran presence seriously.

He was dogging it the last 2-3 years.

    ////

Really feel like i blew it not seeing Dante Jr. this year. But it would be so great if he could follow Alex at 3B. A power 3B who has a decent glove…that would give many a Yankee fan peace of mind…of course, no one can truly replace Alex…

BrendanPrunty Red Sox will start John Lackey on Sunday.

  46. umbrelladoc September 23rd, 2011 at 4:21 pm

    Bret,

Giving Crawford 7 years isn’t the right response or “hedge” to losing Lee, though. Crawford’s shortcomings as an offensive player have been hashed out, but I’m not sure giving ANY offensive player a 7 year deal is the right response to missing out on Lee. Werth might have been a better fit – but to lock up another big long term contract on a hitter doesn’t make sense. Even the Soriano signing is a better hedge – shorter term deal, plus having more bullpen depth if your starters are shaky (or old).

There were better ways to use the money earmarked for Lee in the short term without having to commit to a long term deal. In fact, it’s probably not accurate to just say Cashman lucked out with Colon and Garcia. Cashman signed Colon, Garcia, Carlos Silva, Kevin Millwood and Mark Prior, probably banking on one of the them working out. That’s probably something a team with less money couldn’t do.

  47. GreenBeret7 September 23rd, 2011 at 4:21 pm

NYYs need for last winter was for starting pitching until the kids were ready. There were two pitchers on the market that fit that category….Lee and Pettitte. Lee had 3 teams to chose from. He took Philedelphia. He was asking for more money than Sabathia got and for less reason. He used NY to get more money from either Phillie or Texas. Pettitte was coming back or going home….nothing in between. Money wasn’t going to persuade him one way or the other. It was family…and perhaps because his body was just wore out. Will he return in 2012? Doubtful, but, if he does, it’s the NYYs or nothing.

Would have been great if Pettitte had not gone to Houston, but, they got Hughes. Cashman’s only mistake that winter was taking Clemens’ word that he was retiring and not offering Clemens and Wells arbitration.

  48. J. Alfred Prufrock September 23rd, 2011 at 4:25 pm

Thanks for posting, Erin, but I wonder what he means by a “regular” DH. They’ll still have to get the first crowd out to get the ticket holders of the second game, in.

I would be on board for that, though. Just did it on Thursday, and it was wonderful seeing two games in a row, kinda like the old days (although we had to leave the park and then wait around until they re-opened).

If we’re rained out, I know which game I’ll be watching tonight ;D.

  59. MG September 23rd, 2011 at 4:38 pm

Two more reasons to love CC Sabathia:

On not getting one more start to get his 20th win:
“Maybe looking back when I’m done playing I’ll say I wish I had a chance to win [20],” said Sabathia, who expects to throw about 45 pitches. “Right now, I don’t really care.”

On using a 3 man rotation in the ALDS:
“It’s possible,” Girardi said. “Only one guy would guy have to pitch on short rest, the first guy.”

That would be Sabathia, who has done well in the past on short rest.

“I’ve got no problem with that,” Sabathia said.

He is the man, the Big Man.

  60. J. Alfred Prufrock September 23rd, 2011 at 4:44 pm

I think since they have a solid B plan, they won’t push the issue. At least, I hope not. Don’t want to see any of our guys sloshing around on the WT either…

  83. Vineyard Yankee September 23rd, 2011 at 5:03 pm

It’s good to read that CC is past the winning 20 games thing this year. Now he can focus completely on the upcoming post season.

He had a few shots at # 20 this season and it didn’t pan out.

fwiw, national weather service is saying almost 100% chance of rain until well after mn

  87. yankeefeminista September 23rd, 2011 at 5:06 pm

I seriously don’t see how we can play. But I didn’t think we would play on June 9th vs. Sux either, so what do I know. Glad I am not there for the 10 hour rain delay, but if they project a 3AM starting time, I may just hop in my car and show up. :)

  88. J. Alfred Prufrock September 23rd, 2011 at 5:07 pm

tom, they should consider what might be viewed as sacrilege…a roof…Mother Nature for some reason has turned her back on baseball…certainly April baseball and now, August, and September….being a traditionalist, maybe she doesn’t like the Wild Card….

  89. yankeefeminista September 23rd, 2011 at 5:08 pm

Hellboy’s stats appear to slightly trump Nova’s, except for wins and FIP. It will be interesting to see how the ROY voting goes and what the arguments are. Is Pineda even in the mix?

  90. LGY September 23rd, 2011 at 5:09 pm

@bkabak: Whatever you do, don’t take NYC subway directions from Jon Heyman. Taking the 7 to the N to the 4 adds an unnecessary transfer.

  91. J. Alfred Prufrock September 23rd, 2011 at 5:09 pm

Joe in LI, that doesn’t sound promising. At least we have Price-Morrow on MLB.

  92. RayVT September 23rd, 2011 at 5:09 pm

What would be nice is to have this game postponed until a DH Sunday and to have the Rays win tonight. Then Yanks win Saturday along with Rays. That would make the squeeze of the DH on Sunday even better.

  93. JM September 23rd, 2011 at 5:10 pm

Well they opened the gates up there….Decided to pass on this game and take a shot at Sunday instead. Don’t think I could deal with another long rain delay…..

I also don’t think they’ll call it for a looooong time. Could start playing very late.

  94. Vineyard Yankee September 23rd, 2011 at 5:10 pm

Even if the Yankees are rained out a victory by The Rays cuts the WC down to 1.5 to keep the Sux in their pressure cooker. Could be worse.

  95. Warning Track Power September 23rd, 2011 at 5:10 pm

Will “the ghosts” of Yankee Stadium part the clouds and keep the rain away long enough
to play a baseball game lasting 4+ hours/9 innings tonight??

  96. J. Alfred Prufrock September 23rd, 2011 at 5:11 pm

RayVT, lots of pressure on Boston if it falls out like that…

  97. tomingeorgia September 23rd, 2011 at 5:11 pm

    JAP,
Is the new Yankee Stadium designed to accept a roof? What kind?

  98. yankeefeminista September 23rd, 2011 at 5:14 pm

JM, looks like all the Lohudders with tickets are staying dry instead. Wise move.

  99. yankeefeminista September 23rd, 2011 at 5:15 pm

I hate baseball in the rain, but I am categorically against a roof. In sports, I am a traditionalist.

  100. J. Alfred Prufrock September 23rd, 2011 at 5:15 pm

tom, I’m not sure if the current design could accommodate one, but where there’s $$$ there’s a way… This has been going on for several years, now, and it seems to be getting worse…maybe they can build an emergency dome across the street on sacred ground…

  101. tomingeorgia September 23rd, 2011 at 5:26 pm

    JAP,
If one could be installed for, say, the value of A-Rod’s contracts, they should look into it.

  102. Red Robin September 23rd, 2011 at 5:28 pm

Rain out(s) benefit(s) the Red Sucks.

    How does rainouts benefit Boston?

  104. m September 23rd, 2011 at 5:34 pm

I want to see the Yankees knock games of their schedule. What I don’t really want is for them to say there’s going to be a game, and then postpone hours later. Normally, I’d say no problem to starting at 11 or 12, but they play a late afternoon game tomorrow. If they get this game in tonight, it will be Gardner and a bunch of kids playing tomorrow.

  105. tomingeorgia September 23rd, 2011 at 5:35 pm

Yankeefem, I agree about football stadiums, but criminey, how many rain outs this year? Surely, Yankee money could produce an aesthetically pleasing retractable roof park. Only close it when its raining hard enough or long enough the interfere with play, not for low or high temperatures or anything else, and natural grass, of course.

  106. Betsy September 23rd, 2011 at 5:35 pm

I’m fine with a shortened game even if the Sox win – no way do I want to be playing DHs at this time of year

    How does rainouts benefit Boston?

Because, unlike the Yankees, they need to win these game to get into the playoffs so whatever the weather, and no matter what time the game starts, they’ll be playing their A lineup. In contrast, Joe G won’t want to risk his veterans getting hurt in slippery conditions.

  109. bruceb September 23rd, 2011 at 5:42 pm

Or playing two games in one day.

  110. JM September 23rd, 2011 at 5:43 pm

Of course, you are right. But designing it to accommodate one, for $1.5 billion, might have been considered.

  116. m September 23rd, 2011 at 5:59 pm

This is from an espn writer, a self-described “local” who feels a disconnect with Tom Brady (because of his jet-setting lifestyle and residency).

It’s a pretty revealing article. He touches upon the provinciality of Boston and how Boston fans want to be loved back by their stars.

A good read if you’re into the New York/Boston rivalry.

  118. yankeefeminista September 23rd, 2011 at 6:00 pm

    Yogi, lol.

A DH hurts the Sux more; we can roll out two lineups and not blink an eye. They however, need to play their big boys both games. It does however, help their pitcher as right now they have no starter for Sunday.

  119. Trigeminal Neuralgia Yank September 23rd, 2011 at 6:01 pm

  121. luis September 23rd, 2011 at 6:04 pm

    Hi everyone,

    My two cents:

On Crawford: I am glad that we didn’t get him, we have Bret Gardner which is a very good player at a fraction of the cost of Crawford….besides the last three year of that contract are going to be ugly.

On Tonight’s game: i do think a double header is going to hurt the sux more than to play tonight, because a DH is going to tax their BP a lot more. But i hate a night without baseball though

  122. m September 23rd, 2011 at 6:04 pm

The cost of a roof in NY in 2008 money is not the same as Seattle money in 2000 or Houston/Phoenix money in 2000. It could possibly cost and additional $500 mil to $750 mil more for the roofing structure and making changes in the complete building itself to strengthen it.

I have suggested that before and was told that all teams want a share of summer vacation games on their schedule.

  131. LGY September 23rd, 2011 at 6:15 pm

Randy Levine, the Yankees’ president, said a retractable roof could have added as much as $250 million to the new stadium’s cost. More important, Levine said, was the owner George Steinbrenner’s desire to build a stadium reminiscent of the original, which opened in 1923.

With a roof, Levine said: “No way you could ever make it appear like Yankee Stadium. It would look like an airplane hanger.” Levine said rainouts were not much of a problem for the Yankees in most seasons.

The stadium was designed to be as much like the old stadium as possible. Even copies of the Mona Lisa would not put a burka on her.

I hate the roofed stadiums for baseball. The domes are even worse, as the Rays will attest. Rogers Center is a lousy place to play due to the turf, and its why Girardi usually rests players over having them play multiple days on that crap.

Baseball is an outdoor sport. Weather is weather. Yeah, rain delays stink, so do postponements due to poor weather, but that is life. It’s childish to complain that the Yankees didn’t spend another half billion on their stadium to keep rain from being a problem.

The weather is something that has to be dealt with, and can be a component of the game and the season.
