Yankees postpone Maris celebration
Due to uncertain weather conditions, the Yankees have postponed tonight’s previously scheduled pregame ceremony to honor the 50th anniversary of Roger Maris setting a then-Major League record with 61 home runs in 1961.
The ceremony has been rescheduled for tomorrow.
The Yankees ask that fans take their seats by 3:20 p.m. before tomorrow’s game. Ceremonies will be slated to begin at 3:35 p.m., prior to the Yankees-Red Sox game scheduled to begin at 4:10 p.m.

Disgusted….bought tickets for this specific event.
GoldGlove, I feel your pain.

Where is Nick when you need him? Any guesses on the over/under on hit batters w/ AJ and Wakie pitching?

Pretty sure you have to say his name three times, like Beetlejuice.

Disappointed about the Maris celebration as well, GoldGlove, because tomorrow I am going to (gulp) a Mets game instead of the Yankees. Old friend (and huge Mets fan) is coming to visit from California and I said I’d go out to Shea, I mean Citi Field with him. So I will miss the Maris festivities. Grrr. Will have to set the DVR.
So they’ll never have a DH tomorrow thanks to Joe Buck. Im totally screwed….have to return to PA on Sunday.
Will ceremonies be televised? Game is on Fox.
Double Grrrrr! I am assuming YES will have pregame coverage of Maris even though it is a FOX game.

BryanHoch Yankees.com: Cashman says he faked interest in Crawford http://atmlb.com/rlWcX9
Chad, can you please find out if YES will cover Maris ceremony? They should cover it en totale considering so many of us who were to attend are now no longer able to because of the change in dates. Thanks!
Good morning everyone!
Mother Nature has not been kind to the Yankees this year. Baseball Gods owe us one!
Apologies if this has been posted, but Cashman admits feigning interest in Crawford to drive up the price. He’s said as much before, but this is a blatant admission. I’m sure Crawford’s agent was in on the ruse, too. Also says that Montero’s better than any of the players that were ever traded for Lee.
http://espn.go.com/new-york/ml.....on-red-sox
From that article, it’s clear that Cashman took a gamble with Gardner. imo, Gardner is developing into a nice little player. Hope he gets a gold glove this year.
Had the Red Sox waited one week before signing Crawford, Cashman would’ve been far more serious about him after missing out on Lee…and he knows it. This was a PR puff piece to erase the fact that Cashman very foolishly put all his eggs in the Cliff Lee basket in the off season and had nowhere to turn after Crawford was off the board. He’s also trying to pump the value of Montero and Gardner in that piece. Gardner is a fringe major leaguer. I hope he gets a Juan Pierre deal in the future (4 years 40 million)…just not from Cashman.
Cashman just said on wfan that Montero is really struggling against righties so far. So if he makes the roster it would be to face lefties. Since when is 30 at bats a big sample size?!?! They are obviously platooning him now to get other guys in the lineup against righties. I hope next year they give him a chance to play everyday instead of this stupid platoon situation for a 21 year old.
And he still needs a pitcher with Cliff Lee level talent…and he knows it.
Why pass on Holliday to get…Carl Crawford?
We all know that Brett and Crawford are essentially the same player. One just gets paid 40X the other this year. Crawford has more pop, but not THAT much more.
We all knew that Crawford was going to get between $16-20M per and many of us were hoping it wouldn’t be from us.
Yes, he still needs a Cliff Lee type. But that player chose to go to Philly. No other has been available.
Are you saying that you wanted to give Seattle everything they wanted for a player whose heart was somewhere else?
Right now it looks like Gardner and Crawford are “essentially the same player” but that’s a small sample based on one year. If you look at their careers, Crawford is a superior player. Cashman is pouncing on the window to atone for his goose egg offseason. If Crawford rakes next year and Gardner continues to wallow in the .720′s OPS, Cashman doesn’t look so lucky and he won’t be able to brag for essentially doing nothing in the off season and doing nothing at the trade deadline. His contract is up. He’s easily replaceable.
Goldglove,
I have tickets for tonight as well so we can commiserate. Tix on stubhub start at about 40$ for tomorrow’s game if you’re really set on taking your dad to the ceremony although the prices could drop if the weather looks sketchy for tomorrow as well.
Everyone would love to have the big three that Philadelphia has. But the Phillies would love the Yankees lineup and bullpen too.
All in all Cashman has had an excellent last 10 months.
some here were ready to give up a major package of prospects for Ubaldo Jiminez. In case you didn’t notice he’s 4-3, 4.62 in ten starts.
Cashman missed on Lee… Cashman still needs a pitcher with Cliff Lee talent… Cashman was then going to turn to… Carl Crawford??
Does. Not. Compute
Give it up man and pay your debt to Nick. The Yankees never had any interest in Crawford.
Bret,
I was the first one here to say that Gardner would suffer the same fate as Melky. I don’t need to be told that.
You don’t think the Sox have a player in their system that can do what Crawford is doing this year?
I’m not fawning over Crawford. Talk about overrated. Even if he bounces back, he’s not worth that salary.
Anyway, it’s John Henry’s money, not mine.
What did Cashman do in the last 10 months that his replacement couldn’t do? Any GM can come in here and do nothing.
Bret you’re priceless… if Cashman saved 19 of 20 people from a burning building you’d point out the one he failed to rescue!
All that matters with regards to Crawford/Gardner is how they played this season and how they might play in the future.
Crawford made $ 20 M this year and Gardner cost the Yanks less than $ 600 K. Most would agree Gardner has had the superior season.
Bret is the last inhabitant on the once densely populated Hate Cashman Island.
I can live with Gardner, so not signing Crawford was not a big deal to me.
Biggest disappointment was not getting Lee. He is a top of the rotation guy and would have made an excellent 1/2 with CC.
BryanHoch Yankees.com: Cashman says he faked interest in Crawford
————————————
I thought that was obvious. Maybe the Tex deal had Theo thinking the bluff was real.
If Ivan Nova doesn’t learn that slider and grow well ahead of the curve, the number 2 starter would’ve been the guy who got bombed last night. Cashman had Hughes or AJ as the number 2 starter before he struck gold while dumpster diving like the scavenger that he is.
Well, I thought Crawford to the Yanks was a done deal & merited doing. I wasn’t sold on Gardner. I was WRONG! LOL!
I truly believe Crawford is much better than he has played this year, but I am glad the Yanks have Gardner in LF. (Gardner is also a BU CF which Crawford won’t do.) So far it seems if the Rays don’t want someone there appears to be a really good reason why!
Think about that…Cashman’s number to starter heading into 2011 was Hughes or AJ Burnett. He banked on those guys.
Russell Martin, Corey Wade, Luis Ayala, Bartolo Colon, Freddie Garcia, Andruw Jones and Eric Chavez for a total of less than $ 15 M.
Yeah, he did nothing. Nothing at all.
Not getting Lee was a disappointment, but I am not sure what more Cashman could have done.
And somehow, despite no Lee and no Crawford and no sexy off season moves, the Yankees have won the AL east over the highly touted red sox w/ a week left in the season.
Warning Track,
That means I get the Texas game. I hate Fox days.
“What did Cashman do in the last 10 months that his replacement couldn’t do? ”
What did Crawford do in the last 4 months that Gardner couldnt do?
He had Hughes or AJ Burnett for Girardi’s #2!
Bret you can nit pick til hell freezes over, but it’s all about results. Have you noticed the standings? Have you noticed how many newcomers have contributed mightily to those 95 wins?
You ignore every success as if it was either pure luck or something he had nothing to do with but hold him to blame for everything that goes wrong.
It’s tired
Who sent him down to learn that slider?
You don’t like the two treasures he found, so what would you have done after Lee signed with Philly? (don’t forget, Texas was his 2nd choice, so he was not going to sign with us)
What was your big move, Bret?
Cashman’s plan for all of us was originally Phil Hughes or AJ Burnett pitching Game 2.
A rookie with a shaky 2010 debut and 2 scrap heap additions really saved Cashman’s bacon.
Hughes had 18 wins last year. The sounds like a #2 SP to me.
m,
You honestly think the Rothschild, Girardi and the coaching staff weren’t the ones who identified the slider as the pitch Nova needed to work on and shouldn’t get all the credit for it?
Given the circumstances…..Cashman has been great the last couple of years…..he turned lemons into lemondade this past winter in a way Im sure he didn’t even expect.
have a nice day/night everyone…
It appears “doing nothing” was the much smarter strategy this offseason compared to Theo’s headline moves, especially when you consider where the two teams are in the standings.
Whether Crawford has a better season than Gardner next season is not at all the point. The point is that Crawford is not $19M+ per season better than Gardner.
Bret has got to be the worst fantasy GM in the history of LoHud.
What was your big move, Bret?
“What did Cashman do in the last 10 months that his replacement couldn’t do? ”
What did Crawford do in the last 4 months that Gardner couldnt do?
———————————————————–
Exactly.
There were a lot of people in here that knew that Gardner was going to be an amazing value compared to Crawford.
Cashman “did nothing” because there was nothing worth doing.
Hughes 2010 second half 4.90 ERA. That’s why Cashman announced AJ Burnett as the #2 starter heading into this season. AJ Burnett.
FakePeteGammons A top league source just told me take out April & September & #Redsox are best team ever! This is Peter Gammons.

another division title = nothing – it’s the new math folks…
At this point why is anybody complaining about Cashman’s offseason? As he said in that article, it turned out he had a pretty good winter after all.
m September 23rd, 2011 at 2:22 pm
What was your big move, Bret?
———–
obviously cliff lee + felix hernandez…and then possibly go for ubaldo to be a mop up guy…
I’m sorry, so Cliff Lee decides to go to Phillies (that is not a Cashman fail, btw, all indications were that Lee would come to NYC), there is no obvious replacement available so Cashman cobbles together and takes chances on (a) a homegrown with promise in Nova and (b) two veterans in Colon and Garcia, and this is a BAD thing????
Keeping Gardner, whom I have grown to like (though I think he has room to improve) a lot, at his low cost, frees up resources for other weaker areas. Gardner is a gold glove left fielder (who can easily play Centerfield), who leads the league in stolen bases in spite of not even coming close to tapping his potential for getting on base via bunts and infield hits.
I really don’t get the blasting of Cashman here. Not at all.
eboland11 Can confirm it is, indeed, still raining rather fiercely at the Stadium.
FakePeteGammons Source also told me take out Crawford, Lackey, Jenks & Drew & replace them w/Kemp, Hallyday, Rivera & Granderson, #Redsox would be 162-0
I was pissed that Cashman didn’t get Haren and then the Angels got him for nothing. Not getting Lee was upsetting. But once the Phillies signed Lee there was no where for Cashman to turn to. No other #1-#2 starter was available. So Cashman did the best he could with what was avilable. This off season or next year he definitely has to get a #2 guy to go with CC if they want to win another championship.
Amazing value? They both suck. The difference is Crawford won’t suck for the rest of his contract. He is expensive. Overpriced. But I have a hard time believing Cashman when he seems to be suggesting that he would’ve treated Crawford the same way after Lee was off the board, had Boston waited just one more week. Cashman is merely revising history to puff up his credentials for contract negotiations with ownership. If he went someplace else in the offseason, I don’t think that event would really damage this franchise.
Cashman did what he should have done when Lee didn’t sign…..instead of.panic he took.some.of that cash and threw it at the wall in several different directions……and some of it stuck and.has.worked out nicely. He has had the midas touch with the scrap pile lately
Erin,
I’ll give Bret one thing. We have lucked out. But mainly because the overall team and farm system are very good.
I hear lots of complaints about AJ & Hughes, but no solutions…
And I really hate 20/20 hindsight and revisionist history.
Not to mention some sort of twisted spoiled brat-ism because the Yankees did or did not make moves that a fan might prefer.
# m September 23rd, 2011 at 2:24 pm
Cashman “did nothing” because there was nothing worth doing.
———–
What Bret always wants is headline moves and making changes for the sake of making changes.
There are certain players on the team that he doesn’t like (Gardner is at the top of the list) and he’ll suggest a very stupid trade or signing just to get rid of said player.
Hell, he’s the same guy who demanded Cashman trade for Grady Sizemore after he hit a couple of dingers his first few games back. Yeah, that would have worked out well.
Carl Crawford has a career OPS of .775. He’s a player that relies on speed that just turned 30.
This is what you wanted to spend seven years, $142 million on? (or more to outbid the Sox?)
Terrible contract from the beginning, even if he does bounce back next year.
my hope is Bret will stick around long enough to conjure Nick up, who will then answer my question.
If Gardner continues to ‘wallow in the .720 OPS range’ he will be one of the best outfielders in baseball until he hits FA, after which the Yankees will probably let him go or move him to CF.
Bret, you don’t understand value. Just like Chip. You undervalue your prospects and overvalue big names. You’re dissing Cashman’s plan, but who had a better one? Theo? Any GM’s strategy can be summed up negatively. Theo relied on too many flawed/injury prone players to try and prop up the red sox. Andrew Freidman tried to cover up a bridge year with shaky veteran signings. The Tigers put all their eggs in a Brad Penny/Porcello basket. The rangers thought doing nothing would be better than retaining cliff lee. It goes on.
The biggest move that Epstein didn’t make was not moving Youkilis. He was hoping that Youkilis would easily move back to third base and everything would be cherry for years. He didn’t play that well and can’t stay healthy. Epstein would have been better off moving Youkilis to another team for pitching and either resigning Beltre or giving the job outright to Lowrie.
It’s a pricey contract, but Cashman would’ve been buying Crawford more than just dinner if he was still on the board when Lee signed (Theo knew better). There was cash to burn. Thus Rafael Soriano.
Carl Crawford is a contact hitter that doesn’t make contact. 2010 was his career year.
“As top the Sox, if they make it fine….if not fine. If they do, they will be dangerous. What can you do? You just play who you are set to play and hope for the best”
Seriously if I read one more comment about someone’s fear of the Sux I think I am going to scream.
If the Sux make it to the playoff they’ll be dangerous? Based on exactly what are you saying this????? Did you watch all of their games while you were away in Virginia? Any of them? Do you even watch their games? Do you know their record this month? Do you know what’s going on with their bullpen?
And please, I don’t want to hear the hackneyed “anything can happen in a short series” because that means anything can happpen with any team. I want to know what exactly makes you believe the Sux would be dangerous.
And if anyone else wants to take up that same (IMO) ridiculous mantel, feel free and then feel free to answer the questions I have posed and give me a solid baseball answer about why this Sux team, as presently constituted, would be dangerous. And then feel free to tell me about the innings they have gotten from their starters over the last month, the innings they have gotten from their bullpen, and their ERA. And then tell me the average number of runs they have gotten per game over the last month. How about the last two weeks.
And if the saying is that the team that’s the hottest is the one that will win the world series, PLEASE tell me how in the name of all that is good in this world you could begin to call the Sux dangerous.
Thanks in advance. Maybe there’s something I have failed to look at in terms of the team in my back yard whose games I watch with great regularity and whose former players I listen to on WEEI with great interest as even they continue to say that they don’t believe the Sux will make it to the postseason and if they do, they definitely won’t win.
What am I missing here?

I feel bad for you.
Luckily I will get the game in my area.
Fox days are so frustrating.
The Yankees need a GM with clout in the front office that can fight for moves and stem the idiot tide that is Randy Levine. Not just any GM can come in and hold that role.
“What did Cashman do in the last 10 months that his replacement couldn’t do? ”
Pretzel logic- the thought process used by Bret and a pretty good Steely Dan album.
Cashman wasn’t replaced so what his replacement would have done can’t be known.
Cashman is merely revising history to puff up his credentials for contract negotiations with ownership.
————————————————————
You’re really out there today if you think that “the bluff” is news to Hal/Levine/Trost.
You don’t see Cashman bragging about trading Melky to the Braves instead of Gardner because that’s a situation where small sample sizes don’t work in his favor if we’re looking only at 2011.
You see him pouncing on Crawford during an off-year.
It’s just a negotiating ploy because Cashman is up for review.
I don’t think he’s the sort of lynchpin of success he’s made out to be. There a lot of money out there on the field, tremendous scouting, top notch talent and damn good coaching as well. The New York Yankees live on without Brian Cashman.
Crawford can’t be our #2 starter. I’m not trying to harp on it, but how would Crawford have helped us? Why hand out a $142M contract for the sake of giving one out? It might do just the opposite which is freeze up funds that could otherwise buy you an ace or one close to it.
m- oh, no question they got extremely lucky.
the winter of discontent actually turned out pretty good.
shock-posting
You use the fans and get them on your side. That’s the tactic. I never suggested Cashman’s trying to bluff ownership. Never.
“The Red Sox spent more time in first place this year than the Yankees” – the ghost of Dan Duquette.
The reason the Yankees ran away with the division while Boston is on the brink of disaster is depth.
Cashman built that depth. The Yankees suffered a huge amount of injuries this season yet they always had a capable replacement ready to step in.
Sure, some overacheived like Bartolo, but suprises happen in baseball and the Yankees had scouts extensively check out Colon this winter.
Bret fawned over Theo and the Sox all winter and all season. Yet at the end of the day Cashman’s team won the division and it’s not even close.
Refusing to let go and accept that you were probably wrong given the results of the season is disingenuous and transparent.
In addition, Cashman’s not wanting Soriano was also vindicated. Even though I have high hopes for Soriano being a major contributor in the playoffs – and he’s had seasons in the past when he’s been absolutely lights out, Cashman had the correct idea not to invest so much money and the #1 pick on Soriano. Even after Joba went down with the injury, they could have acquired another reliever for prospects worth less to the organization than the draft pick and the 10 million they are paying Soriano.
I hope they play the Sox hard (which I doubt) and take 2/3.
Tampa sweeps the Jays at the Trop, so the WC will be tied going into the last three games. Tampa then takes 2/3 from the Yankees, Sox take 2/3 from the O’s, and they have to play a one game playoff in Tampa.
Better yet, the Sox have to pitch Wakefield on the last day of the season to tie the Rays for the WC, and he blows it.
I’ll be laughing all the way to next April.

I’m not a Cashman lover, but the one thing he did right this offseason was not making 1 mistake (failing to acquire Lee) worse by making another one (chasing Carl Crawford).
There’s plenty of reasons to criticize Cashman (going after Pavano AGAIN? Really…?), but letting Crawford go without an offer is not one of them.
as far as I know, there is no award for spending the most days in first place

unfortunately i think mother nature has it out for us this year – i think we’re gonna end up playing a double header or two and may even have to play a makeup game after the season is over…
““The Red Sox spent more time in first place this year than the Yankees” means that their decline has been that fast!”
Exactly. And what a decline!!!!! They are in freefall.
But you shouldn’t brag if you never had a chance to make an offer to Crawford. That’s the point. He was gone before Lee was off the board and there was plenty of cash to burn…still is.
There was more to adding Cabrera in a trade than because Atlanta was pining for him. Just a guess but, most likely he was added to the trade to break up the Dominican Party Boys. Hardly the first time the best friend of a star was traded to get the lesser talent out of town. Mantle followed Martin and Cano followed Cabrera.
“The reason the Yankees ran away with the division while Boston is on the brink of disaster is depth.”
Bingo…..and primarily rotation. A big.league rotation is really 1-7 or 8 not 1-5.

Sometimes this place is so “Groundhog Day.”
According to the ESPN report, Cashman had previously said that Boston general manager Theo Epstein dominated the Yankees in the offseason, in terms of signings. Epstein also brought Adrian Gonzalez to Boston in a trade with San Diego.
“What I said was accurate: The Red Sox had a great winter, and I had a bad winter,” Cashman told ESPN. “But as it turned out, I had a better winter than anybody would’ve expected, including myself.”

Shameless self-promotion ?

It’s true! It’s true! The Yankee crown has made it clear.
AL East climate must be perfect all the year.
A Gammons law was made a distant moon ago here:
July and August Saux cannot be too hot.
And there’s no legal limit to the snow here
In Shamelot.
The winner’s chants are forbidden till December
which are repelled by Saux chants of wait till next year
And exits March the second on the dot when the mighty Yankees reappear.
By network order, Saux winning chants must linger through September
In Shamelot.
Shamelot! Shamelot!
I know it sounds a bit bizarre,
But in Shamelot, Shamelot
That’s how conditions are.
The rain may never fall till after sundown.
By eight, the morning fog must disappear.
In short, there’s simply not
A more congenial spot
For happily-ever-aftering than here
Where dreams are sold & the truth never told than
In Shamelot.
Shamelot! Shamelot!
I know it gives a person pause,
But in Shamelot, Shamelot
Those are the legal laws.
The snow may never slush upon the hillside.
By nine p.m. the moonlight must appear.
In Shamelot.
Another year has come and gone to shame just like last year
Where the Bronx came in & tears befell their foes
The haughty Saux fans Again this year will hear the chants
While Shouts of joy and victory ring from the real Camelot
The NY hills of Camelot! They Beat Shamelot,
In short, there’s simply not
A more congenial spot
For happily-ever-aftering for real than here
In Camelot! Not Shamelot!
What’s most interesting to me is that Crawford told WEEI that he was never approached by the Yankees. So perhaps his agent saw through what Cashman was doing.
Ray VT – I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just sang the entire song with your words.
BRAVO!
Regardless, the piece and Cashman’s quotes improve his image in the eyes of fans and ownership groups around the league. This is just basic marketing.
But again, I think the Yankees can still thrive with a different GM.
I’m really surprised to see fans assign so much credit to him given the 200 million dollar budget, the starpower, the scouting, the coaching…
I don’t think Cashman is hurting the Yankees. I just think he’s neutral. Replaceable.
It’s even better if they have a double header tomorrow–makes it even harder for the Sox to win both! And it depletes their BP.
This is all too much fun.
“What’s most interesting to me is that Crawford told WEEI that he was never approached by the Yankees. So perhaps his agent saw through what Cashman was doing.”
Not sure of what you’re trying to say here. His agent would be more than happy to go to dinner with Cashman. Even if the Yankees have zero interest (and Cash probably told him so), they could still drive up the price. Good for Crawford, his agent, and the Yankees. Bad for the Sox. Bad.
The Sox missed the postseason last year (was that the bridge year?) so they HAD to make a big FA move. Their pitching was pretty much set, so Crawford was the big “prize”.
And by the way, Cashman is correct. All of the yammering about Crawford and the absolute belief that he was going to be a Yankee came from the fan base!
I like the guy and feel bad he got stuck with a stinker for a team. But he had to go somewhere and the Rays knew they couldn’t keep him. He said that the Sux were the only team that made him an offer.
What’s most interesting to me is that Crawford told WEEI that he was never approached by the Yankees. So perhaps his agent saw through what Cashman was doing.

It benefited Crawford so there is a good chance him and his agent were in on it.
There are 7 more years for Crawford to justify his contract, m. You’re bandwagoning.
mel, what I’m saying is that maybe the agent knew it was a bluff and of course he was going to use it to drive the price up. But I don’t know what the agent mentioned to Crawford because he said the Yankees never approached him.
It sounds like because the Yanks won the division Cashman is trying to pat himself on the back. His projects got them to the play offs now let’s see how they produce on the big stage. Cashman can talk when the play offs are over not now.
Cashman is just tweaking the Sox and their fanboys in the media. Good for him. From the sound of it, he appears to want to come back.
LGY – Crawford doesn’t seem like the most business savvy guy. Nothing says that his agent saw fit to tell him about every phone call and every conversation. If Crawford says he was never approached by the Yankees, I certainly believe him. Do I believe Cashman had a conversation with the agent? Of course.
A prediction:
Crawford’s contract will approach (but never surpass) the abomination that is Vernon Wells deal.

————————————————————————————————————————-
That dinner may have cost $25 mil….with John henry picking up the tab plus tip.
I would think that Crawford knows, however, that if the Sux were the only team that made an offer, it’s because they are one of the few teams who could afford him.

Their pitching being “set” was part of their problem. With bad contracts of Dice-K and Lackey clogging the rotation, there was no room to chase anybody (like Cliff Lee).
Now that Dice-K is all but gone (mercifully), I wonder if they try to get involved with CC? Not that they’d ever outbid the Yankees.

Captain,
Agreed. He’s totally patting himself on the back. You don’t often see GM’s waltz out there into the media and proclaim “HAHA, I tricked you!!!”
Imagine if Jack Z announced “HAHA, I was interested in Smoak all along. The rest was Smoak and mirrors. I never intended to make a trade with the Yankees. I used their GM. HAHA”
Now would other GM’s want to work with Jack Z? Would they want to engage someone who brags and comes across as arrogant or avoid them whenever possible?
You can’t not factor in Cashman’s ability to thrive/survive under the NY spotlight and the pressure of having a very hands-on ownership.
He is not easily replaceable based on that alone.
No one is irreplaceable and the day will come when you won’t have Cashman to kick around anymore. But I’m sure you won’t miss a beat on knocking the next guy down, too. Because no matter how sound the background work, no matter how much is put into making a deal or declining a deal, if it doesn’t turn out well, you’re open to a ton of criticism. And if it turns out well, apparently you’re lucky.
sorry Niblick

6 more years. And if he is ever to justify that contract, he’ll have to play better than he’s ever played in his career up to this point.
I don’t know the song but I wish I did.

“Their pitching being “set” was part of their problem. With bad contracts of Dice-K and Lackey clogging the rotation, there was no room to chase anybody (like Cliff Lee).”
Unfortunately for them, they chose not to go after any pitchers who had been quite good at one time or another but were without teams. Maybe after Colon didn’t work out for them they felt they didn’t want to get burned that way again. But that’s nothing short of stupid. With the uncertainty of their rotation they did nothing to shore it up. You put them in AAA if you have to!
I don’t think the Yanks were interested afterall in Crawford. I thought they might try to trade Gardner for a SP along with some other players perhaps even Joba. Crawford would have filled the LF spot of a departed Gardner.
RSox would have been better off re-signing Beltre & moving Youk to LF & spot DH & backup 3B & 1B. Truly the Angels should have signed Crawford.
If Crawford plays near his level of play in 2010, that will be a decent contract for the Red Sox. Even JD Drew’s contract wasn’t a disaster.
Lackey is Epstein’s biggest mistake.
DiceK a close second.
A decent portion of Crawford’s value was defense. Not much value in left field at Fenway. Perhaps if he played center or right field, he’d have more value.
I’m unhappy with how the word ‘shame’ has been bandied about this afternoon.. however, I consider ‘Shamelot’ to be a place I’d like to visit as I’m pretty sure I’m related to some folks there.
Why would Cashman leave? He grew up with the team. Maybe he’ll take another job in 5-10 years after another few WS wins.
PS–with the weather, maybe they’ll play a triple header on Sunday? Wouldn’t that be cool.
The Cliff Lee argument is so tired at this point. Yeah, it would have been wonderful to trade Montero+ for what would have, more than likely, been merely a rental of Lee. He didn’t want to pitch in NY. Say the Yanks made the trade and then in the offseason Lee spurned them, which, to me, seems to be the likely scenario.
Again, sometimes the best trades are the ones that aren’t made.
Bret
The key to Crawford is “if.” Look at Vernon Wells as the classic example.
Remember the angst when the Yankees didn’t get Dice K? It still ended up costing $24 million of Kei Igawa waste, but nonetheless, I think the Yankees may have gotten off lightly.

There’s no way ownership will let Cashman walk. He’s a banker by trade (MBA to be exact but what’s the difference?). Baseball is not his background, is it? Did Cashman ever play baseball? in high school?
Shame Spencer September 23rd, 2011 at 3:14 pm
LOL! I certainly wasn’t refering to you my friend! LOL!
erin i thought ud like that
Epstein has made more than one mistake in recent years. One was letting Bay go and then letting Beltre go. Then, there’s Masterson. Wanna talk about his draft choices FA signings sover the last 3 or 4 years, too? Bay was nothing special but he produced for Boston. Beltre would have been better than Youkilis, whos been getting beat up over the last couple of years.
Cashman played 2B in high school and college.
Once again it proves that INepstein is truly a Blunderboy. He thought that by adding Crawford, Gonzalez, Jenks, and Wheeler all holes in the Sux were filled.
He never allowed for injuries to starting pitchers and a farm system with nobody to cover the injuries. Very short sighted.
Glad he traded Masteron. Wish he had dealt Lester for Johan Santana.
Cashman played baseball in college.
I have an MBA, it is not the same as being a banker.
There’s no way ownership will let Cashman walk. He’s a banker by trade (MBA to be exact but what’s the difference?). Baseball is not his background, is it? Did Cashman ever play baseball? in high school?
——-
WHAT?
Where on earth did you get this info from??? Not even close to accurate.
Kate,
The banker remark was tongue in cheek.
Cashman interned with the Yankees when he was playing college ball at Catholic University and has been with the Yankees ever since.
Catholic University? Is that like the University of Phoenix?
I’m kidding.
Cash was an intern for the team since his late teens or early twenties, wasn’t he?
Bret, c’mon man, you’ve gotta do better than that. Your argument has already changed three different times starting with your dismay he went for Lee and ignored Crawford, but then changing your mind and deciding what made you mad was that he was all smug about his tactics in the papers, and now you’re saying the real issue with Cash is he’s a business major??
The Yanks need Cashman…..as JF mentioned earlier they have to have a GM that can stand up for themselves in the front office…..and on top of that Cashman has this organization headed down the right path…..regardless of how they finish up this season…..they are on the right track.
Lets see, first we insult MBAs, then bankers, then Catholic University. What’s next?
Bret,
What does that mean, “I’m bandwagoning”?
Because you’re the lone holdout, we’re bandwagoners?
I’m not even insulted because it’s really hard to insult me. And the Yankees, you know the team that we all cheer for, are winners in every conceivable way
If the Red Sox fold all the way to 3rd in the WC race, then a certain RSaux Manager may be looking for work!
If Dice-K hadn’t had 53 different pitches gyroing from his arm he might have made it. But just practicing those pitches 5 times a day each killed his arm. Why that is 265 pitches a day!
I Lackey had changed his spots, I mean name to Champey, then he would have been successful! A name can be so trying to a fellow!
If someone could actually catch a pitch and make a throw to 2B or 3B then the RSaux would have been undefeated. Of course having to pitch Niekro, I mean Wakefield (which one is older???) caused the catchers to burn out. I mean running down those knuckleballs and having to wait until the stop simply wore out the best tandem catching force outside of well umm the 61 Yanks! LOL!
If gritty hadn’t gotten so dirty the RSaux wouldn’t have had to wash Peds uni so much and with all the drying it shrunk too much for him to be effective really!
Lastly Big Poopy had to go on a religious diet giving up strong drink made with special shakes that he wasn’t himself. Why if it hadn’t been for all the HGH alphabet soup he would have plumb tuckered out. Saux fans weren’t ever worried though because LARS was available!
I’m not saying NO ONE ELSE could ever be the Yankees GM, they survived before and they’ll survive after, but the people that love to hate on Cash are going to keep on with it regardless of how successful our teams perform on his watch.
Bret is a first cousin of WCDB. His habit of switching arguments/sides shows that they may even be twins.
Cashman doesn’t have an MBA…
Shame,
In a nutshell:
Bret The Hitman September 23rd, 2011 at 3:03 pm
Regardless, the piece and Cashman’s quotes improve his image in the eyes of fans and ownership groups around the league. This is just basic marketing.
But again, I think the Yankees can still thrive with a different GM.
I’m really surprised to see fans assign so much credit to him given the 200 million dollar budget, the starpower, the scouting, the coaching…
I don’t think Cashman is hurting the Yankees. I just think he’s neutral. Replaceable.

RiverAveBlues Hideki Matsui’s rookie hazing was something amazing. http://bit.ly/qKkWyP
And if you’re talking about Crawford’s contract, I think I was in Gardner’s corner the whole way. I’m pretty much sure I said that Crawford was a nice to have, but he would not be worth what he was bound to get. So, I’m pretty much sure I said “Oh, hell no” to that long before he even swung a bat in spring training. So, no. That’s not right if that’s the bandwagon you are referring to.
To change the subject just a bit, here’s another article from Boston.com. In this one, Dan Shaughnessy says the Red Sox are “not worthy” of the playoffs.

Every team has to deal with injuries. It’s part of the game.
Cashman doesn’t have an MBA? Let him go get one in Chicago.
\bret’d
Here’s how Crawford can begin to live up to that contract.
How about moving to a position where your defense can make an impact?
How about leading off if Ellsbury leaves?
How about stealing some more bases?
How about not writing apologies for a season that’s not even over?
With all Yankee GMs, the story is always the same. Yankee GM was either out maneuvered by Boston to get the top player or anybody can GM the Yankees when all you have to do is write a check. Really, no difference with managers. Either the Yankee manager was outsmarted or anybody with a $250 mil payroll can be a pushbutton manager.
YankeesWeather We are still awaiting MLB’s decision regarding tonight’s game. As soon as we know anything, we will post an update.

m,
You’re judging the contract after one year out of 7.
You’re prejudging.
It’s too early to draw conclusions about it, yet Cashman seemed suggestive of conclusions in the press in that piece. You’re joining him in his premature conclusions.
I’m sorry if you feel like that’s an insult with a personal connotation.
It’s strictly math
1/7 is a skimpy fraction in light of the situation.
I don’t understand the direction this conversation has gone today – the Yankees are 7 games in first place, have won the AL East and are going to the playoffs for the umpteenth time. They have missed the playoffs once in 17 or so years and that year they missed because of devasting injuries to key players (Matsui and Jorge, among others).
There will never be a perfect year, a perfect team, a perfect player, the perfect trade, the perfect FA deal. Never.
To me all this criticism is the height of entitlement.
Let me stick up for Bret, for a minute.
He’s been here for a few years now. Though occasionally misguided, he’s not engaged in troll-like behavior. Certainly not at all like GB’s buddy, WCDB.
And, Bret’s entitled to his opinion about trades and Cash and whatever else. Even when a bit out-of-touch to many of us.
At the end of it all, I really think he’s a stand-up Yankee fan. And, that’s what’s the important thing.
But, Bret, you could see the light now and then…..
“I don’t think Cashman is hurting the Yankees. I just think he’s neutral. Replaceable.”
….and should’ve gotten Crawford? Because it sure seems like you think he’s hurting the team with all the suggestions you’re making about his lack of baseball knowledge, the moves he should have made/should not have made, his handling of the media, etc.
Shame,
Here are my words, my own words, one more time.
“I don’t think Cashman is hurting the Yankees. I just think he’s neutral. Replaceable.”
That’s it, Shame.
ah I think Bret is just bored
Did Cashman say that Theo made a bad deal for Crawford? I don’t think so. He said he didn’t think the Yankees needed him because they had Gardner. It is fans and media who are saying so.
You hate Cashman and you project things onto him based on that.
Crawford may very well go on to have a nice career in Boston. He may have had an entirely different year in the Bronx or in Anaheim. But it doesn’t change the basic premise that Cashman was never seriously interested in Crawford because he felt he had a good piece and certainly a more economical piece for left field in Brett Gardner.
Bret The Hitman September 23rd, 2011 at 1:55 pm
Had the Red Sox waited one week before signing Crawford, Cashman would’ve been far more serious about him after missing out on Lee…and he knows it. This was a PR puff piece to erase the fact that Cashman very foolishly put all his eggs in the Cliff Lee basket in the off season and had nowhere to turn after Crawford was off the board. He’s also trying to pump the value of Montero and Gardner in that piece. Gardner is a fringe major leaguer. I hope he gets a Juan Pierre deal in the future (4 years 40 million)…just not from Cashman.
——————
Are these also your words? Because thats how you started this debate…. talking about how Cash should not have been so enamored by Lee because it caused him to somehow miss out on Crawford (a player he never wanted).
I’m not calling you a troll in any respect, but c’mon, your whole debate has been Crawford centric. If you don’t like Cash why don’t you just say, “I just don’t like the guy” instead of throwing out criticism and then claiming you’re not criticizing him but only pointing out that another person could conceivably do the job (something we’re all very well aware of, btw). If you’re gonna be critical of him, just own it, no big. People are gonna disagree but if you’re really passionate about your beliefs who cares, right? Even saying “I’m not being critical but someone else could do his job” is completely passive aggressive. You just don’t like the guy. Own it.
Gardner is more economical than Holliday as well.
And I’m neutral on Cashman.
Shame,
My words were only meant to suggest that banking the whole off season on Lee was not an optimal strategy.
Going into the year with AJ Burnett as the #2 starter without hedging on offense was not an optimal strategy.
And I’m neutral on Cashman.
Bret–
Love your passion, but are you riding the short bus to school nowadays?
I can’t believe the BS criticisms of Cashman…he smoked Theo this year and probably should be Exec of Year.
Just because Cash said Burnett was #2 in off-season doesn’t mean anything. He was just trying to boost the confidence of a shaken pitcher….there was plenty of time during season to work things out. The only crunch time comes in play-offs. Cash had plenty of time to get his rotation in line for that.
BTW–when he said Burnett was #2, he meant he pitched like #2, if you know what I mean.
