Yankees loss keeps Red Sox on the ropes

The Yankees had a chance to give the Red Sox a one-game lead in the wild card race. Instead, Rafael Soriano gave up a three-run home run in the seventh inning and the Rays beat the Yankees 5-3 in the next-to-last game of the season. Assuming the Red Sox hang on to beat Baltimore — they’re up by four — the Rays and Red Sox will remain tied heading into tomorrow’s season finale. Bartolo Colon was better than he was in his previous two starts, allowing two runs on seven hits through 5.1 innings. The shuffled middle of the order played little part in the outcome, and the biggest blow against the Yankees — other than Matt Joyce’s homer — came with Russell Martin grounded into a triple play with the bases loaded in the sixth.
