Betances starting tonight

Looks like Dellin Betances is getting the start tonight. It will be his second big league appearance. After his four-walk debut, Betances said he was hoping for one more chance.

“I was mostly throwing the ball instead of pitching, and that’s one of the things that hurt me,” he said. “I’m just glad to get the first one out of the way, and I hope that I get the chance to pitch one more time and redeem myself from this one.”

Here’s hoping he goes 5 for the W.

  2. m September 28th, 2011 at 3:24 pm

Good luck to the kid. Need to wash away that first experience by ending the season on a good night.

  3. m September 28th, 2011 at 3:24 pm

*good note. Though that would be a good night.

  4. blake September 28th, 2011 at 3:25 pm

    Go Dellin!

  5. JM September 28th, 2011 at 3:25 pm

Ledger_Yankees Is this really happening? Bruce Chen? :)

  6. JM September 28th, 2011 at 3:26 pm

Ledger_Yankees RT @bkabak: @Ledger_Yankees The Mets pulled Reyes because he’s getting traded to the Red Sox in order to start Game 163. #brucechen

  7. Ys Guy September 28th, 2011 at 3:26 pm

    YAY! GO DELLIN!!!

  8. blake September 28th, 2011 at 3:26 pm

    Did they trade for Chen?

  9. Erin September 28th, 2011 at 3:26 pm

I still say he needs to use “Blame it on the Rain” for his warm up music. :P

“The Yankees pulled Bernie Williams early in the game the year he was batting champ. I may be mistaken, but IIRC he won it by .001 over Mo Vaughn. I didn’t like it then either.”

Yes you did too like it then, because that’s not the way it happened.

Boston’s game was over. The Yankee game was going on. Bernie had gone 2 for 2, increasing his lead over Vaughn by .002. The Yanks were winning big, Bernie had one more AB to go and he couldn’t have lost the batting championship by making an out. Torre took Bernie out of the game to honor him and the crowd called him back out to a standing ovation.

mets season comes to an end…later jerks!

  12. Joe from Long Island September 28th, 2011 at 3:28 pm

    1. So, the Red Sox would rather trust Bruce Chen in their must-win 163rd game, over Josh Beckett, or anyone else on their wonderful pitching staff…… Theo, did you just notice you have a problem there?

    2. Red Sox trading for Jose Reyes to play him in game 163 – now, that would be inspired!

  13. m September 28th, 2011 at 3:29 pm

    fake breaking news alert:

The Kansas City Royals have agreed to trade LHP Bruce Chen for Manager Terry Francona, pending results of Sox/Orioles and Yankees/Rays games.

    :P

(side note: shouldn’t the last day of baseball be day games?)

  14. Ys Guy September 28th, 2011 at 3:29 pm

fitting that the mets are the first team to finish their season. (well, tied with the reds of course…)

  15. Erin September 28th, 2011 at 3:30 pm

blake-nothing official yet as far as I know-just rumors.

  16. Erin September 28th, 2011 at 3:35 pm

pcaldera Jorge Posada was on first base for the last two triple plays the Yankees batted into (also 5/29/00 vs. A’s – Randy Velarde’s unassisted TP).

NESN has been peddling these $250 bricks during their game telecasts:

I think their fans have probably sh*t enough bricks lately. Are they really in the market for more?

  18. BBFan September 28th, 2011 at 3:36 pm

    Who will be the catcher?
    Montero or Romine.
I would say Montero for five and then Romaine.

  19. Erin September 28th, 2011 at 3:36 pm

bw51official Time to get back in the batter’s box for our charity softball game this weekend!

  20. rb from LI September 28th, 2011 at 3:36 pm

“Torre took Bernie out of the game to honor him and the crowd called him back out to a standing ovation.”

Not exactly. Torre took him out of the game and Bernie went to take a shower. When the crowd found out that Vaughn was finished for the day they chanted for Bernie to come out for an ovation. They had to go get him. He had already taken off the pinstripe uni and came out in his shower shoes.

Boston has a very good team on paper when healthy. They were not the 27 or 61 Yankees as they were glorified at the beginning of the season. Have you ever thought about why they were glorified???

IMO, it was because their fanbase (including ESPN) was so excited about the possibilty of greatness. Can yo remember a Yankee team being compared to a Boston team at the beginning of the season? LOL! That comparison to a Yankee Standard is even Freudian!

The Sox have had an exposure to a lack of depth. Once vaunted as thinly staffed, the Yankees went all out for depth at key positions. Pitchers, Catchers & more Pitchers & more Catchers! LOL! The Sox gave away their best Catcher in V-Mart & their best player from last year in Beltre. Those two things exposed them to Salty/V-Tek & Youk playing 3B. The non surprise was a staff made up of questions being heralded.

SP1 – Lester (Solid guy, but over used & really struggling lately) (I’d take CC)
SP2 – Bucholtz (Like Yanks Hughes was good option but injuries happen)
SP3 – Beckett (Surprised me at his effectiveness early. Like SJ said he was walking based on injections & would fade at mid to end of the year) (Much like Colon was for Yanks, a ? for an entire year.)
SP4 – Lackey (Who would consider him a top 5 starter?) (Similar to AJ)
SP5 – Dice-K (Ditto! Also, known to have physical issues.) (Yanks had Garcia! Much better option.)
SP BU – Wakefield (Excuse me, but his time has come & gone several yrs back.) (Yanks have a slew of options here including current Yanks #2 SP in Nova. (Also Noesi)

Yanks backed up the SP with a BP to be reckoned with. Very very deep BP & very good too! That was the difference maker. Yanks probably had more injuries than RSox too.

hard to believe how this yankees blog posts pretty much no red socks news at all right in the middle of an epic collapse. does chad really have nothing to say? hasnt heard anything? hasnt talked to anyone in the yankees traveling party about the socks and their situation? say what you want about pete, but he never let a huge yankee-interest story like that go by.

the commenters have been chatting as much about the socks as about the yankees, sometimes more, but chad doesnt seem to be aware of it at all.

  26. Chase September 28th, 2011 at 3:42 pm

Joe is going with the A-Lineup.

…. They better not play more than an inning or 2. Stop helping the Red Sox and rest up, Joe….

  27. m September 28th, 2011 at 3:42 pm

    Good thoughts, Ray.

The Sox thought they built a good bullpen, too. But then Bobby Fat Jinx threw out something or another.

We were very lucky that for the most part, our starting pitching held up. I still think that losing Wang, and then Joba as starters was responsible for 2009.

The difference between us and the Sox is that we have depth to lose guys from the rotation and bullpen. Robertson leaped over Joba and Soriano. That’s how sick our guys are. But, a lot of the guys we are depending on right now did not come from our system: Colon, Garcia, Wade, Ayala, Logan. So, credit Cashman for finding some gems. Except for Logan who came in a trade, those other guys were available to Theo, too.

  28. Erin September 28th, 2011 at 3:43 pm

AndrewMarchand With Montero catching tonight, seems to be another indication Romine won’t make it and Montero-Posada will be emergency catchers

  29. JM September 28th, 2011 at 3:44 pm

    eboland11 And the game 162 lineup: Jeter 6, Granderson 8, Teixeira 3, Cano dh, ARod 5, Swisher 9, Jones 7, Montero 2, Nunez 4, Betances 1

  30. m September 28th, 2011 at 3:44 pm

Romine’s time will come. I’m sure he’s been enjoying the hell out of the last month. Kid didn’t embarrass himself at all.

I think I wouldn’t carry Chavez and would carry Romine. I can’t see how the Yanks will use Chavez in the post-season.

  35. m September 28th, 2011 at 3:48 pm

    Erin,

He had the biggest smile of the group.

I think guys would rather dress up as girls than sissy men and sissy pants. :)

  36. mick September 28th, 2011 at 3:48 pm

looks like the cano to 3rd theory is bogus….maybe so vs rightys, w/ leftys it’s tex

  38. Chase September 28th, 2011 at 3:50 pm

    Wave,

Chavez will be used to PH in clutch RBI spots, most likely.

He’s an RBI machine this year, has great numbers with RISP.

  42. Chase September 28th, 2011 at 3:53 pm

Well, I am calling that this lineup will do damage to Price and the Yankees will win.

Our team will give Boston it’s playoff birth.

Hopefully this reverse jinx works, or I’ll be thoroughly disgusted.

  44. SoS September 28th, 2011 at 3:54 pm

What is up fellas. So most of us are rooting for a sox collapse. Could it be one of those be careful what you wish for. Would a sox collapse make them hit an offseason panic button and open their piggy bank to go after a pujols and texas lefty?

  45. hardwired7 September 28th, 2011 at 3:56 pm

    Ys Guy,

I see it as Chad staying above the fray. He’s not going to play into the lowest common denominator.

What purpose would it serve for him to bring the Sox into it? He’s covering the Yanks, and that’s where his focus has stayed.

  46. cs in la September 28th, 2011 at 4:00 pm

For once in my life, I hope the Yankees take it easy tonight.

(Notice I didn’t say “lose”, just couldn’t do it).
