Looks like Cano is not falling all the way back down to fifth against lefties, instead Cano and Rodriguez are swapping spots.

Derek Jeter SS
Curtis Granderson CF
Mark Teixeira 1B
Robinson Cano DH
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Nick Swisher RF
Andruw Jones LF

    Nunez plays best at 2B.

You think the Rays did a fist pump seeing Nunez and his 19 errors in the lineup?

“if alex dh’d chavez plays 3rd”

Alex won’t dh, and if he had to I’d play Nunez over Chavez at third. But ARod won’t dh.

  12. Chase September 28th, 2011 at 4:00 pm

    LGY,

If he doesn’t pull them early, he’ll be hurting this team.

It’s a joke to play core group of this team, especially Robbie, for 5th straight day when playoffs are in 48 hours.

  15. Yankee Trader September 28th, 2011 at 4:02 pm

At least the Yankees are playing regulars. Price has held Yankee batters to <.200 BA pitching at home. Glad to see Betances get a start

  16. DocTodd September 28th, 2011 at 4:02 pm

Because here’s Chavez’ slash line in September:

    .217/ .260/.304/.564

  19. DocTodd September 28th, 2011 at 4:04 pm

I can’t understand why Giardi wouldn’t pinch hit Jeter or ARod vs Sox….but plays his A squad right before the playoffs…..Unless he pulls them all early, which I doubt..

  20. nyyfana September 28th, 2011 at 4:04 pm

Kay ought to be bent that the greatest organization in the world has him as its spokesman.

  23. upstate kate September 28th, 2011 at 4:05 pm

Okay, I suppose that’s reasonable. I might do that and put Chavy in for defense late in the game. Of course, I hope neither is necessary. :)

  26. nyyfana September 28th, 2011 at 4:06 pm

This game doesnt mean anything, to the Yankees or Betances. This game will not affect Betances one way or the other, unless he gets injured.

  29. HipHipHorHay September 28th, 2011 at 4:08 pm

Chen is supposed to start tonight, so…so the Sux would have to do a deal before his start. Would they really trade for a guy (and give up something) for one start, the 1 game playoff, which may or may not even happen, and they can’t use him in the playoffs and he’ll be a free agent? Especially since he’s only arguably more reliable than Lackey or Wakefield?

    Ys Guy,

I see it as Chad staying above the fray. He’s not going to play into the lowest common denominator.

What purpose would it serve for him to bring the Sox into it? He’s covering the Yanks, and that’s where his focus has stayed.”

hardwired, im not talking about jumping into the comments section, im talking about covering the red socks situation from the yankees standpoint. something we have been doing pretty much constantly.

you cant tell me there’s not alot of buzz all around the team regarding the socks this week. suzyn and john have talked alot in their broadcasts, kay is all over it, francessa, espn. but from chad?…pretty much nothing…

  31. pat September 28th, 2011 at 4:08 pm

What are people afraid of happening? Regulars getting hurt or needing the rest?

These are pretty low pressure games that I would guess the players are enjoying as a tune-up so if rest is your concern it probably shouldn’t be.

Ted Williams did things the right way.

  33. m September 28th, 2011 at 4:10 pm

I would want the regulars to start because I want them loose for Friday.

    Pull them after 1 or 2 at-bats.

I would also like Betances and Hughes to pitch well. And for us to knock Price out. And the Sox have to lose. Whatever happens after that is good. Let the chips fall where they may. Let the baseball gods take over. :)

  34. JM September 28th, 2011 at 4:10 pm

Hopefully the adjustment will work and Arod will start mashing just in time for the playoffs. I can dream, can’t I? :)

  35. Wave Your Hat September 28th, 2011 at 4:10 pm

Joe isn’t going to like not having a defensive back-up catcher in the post-season, even if he thinks Martin will catch every inning. It will make Joe uncomfortable. And, Joe is going to want 8 relievers, because the binder works better with the extra reliever. Joe will go with a Posada/Montero platoon (why vs Texas I don’t know but anyway).

Since Chavez hasn’t really hit since he came off the DL, I could see Chavez getting left out.

Chase-Don’t think for a minute that the “regulars” are going to play all 9 innings today.
Thus draining them of energy for game 1 of the ALDS.
The regulars might get an at bat or two and then exit the game. Nothing wrong with
staying sharp, getting in a few innings, etc…

Chavez cannot be measured by his numbers alone. He has had a number of run delivering timely hits throughout the season. His glove is far far superior to Nunez at 3B. I think he is an aboslute lock to make the roster, and is much more valuable than Dickerson, especially with Arod still being slightly banged up.

  40. m September 28th, 2011 at 4:12 pm

Chavez will be on the roster imo. Good infielder. Veteran guy. Contact hitter.

doesnt anybody think that maybe girardi talks to the players and gets a feel for what’s best for them in terms or play/rest going into the PS?

girardi played in 6 postseasons himself. but people on here think they know more than the collective knowlege of joe and his coaching staff. he talks to long all the time who also talks to the players and feels them out. he knows who’s got aches that need rest and who’s needs ab’s to get the stroke back.

but somebody sitting somewhere other than in the yankees clubhouse thinks he knows better than the moy coach who’s got how many rings?

  43. djsunyc September 28th, 2011 at 4:16 pm

He says Jose Reyes asked before the game to be taken out if he got a hit, and so Collins met that request, because ‘he deserves that respect. However, Collins says he felt terrible about the move, knowing fans paid good money to see him play.

What is up fellas. So most of us are rooting for a sox collapse. Could it be one of those be careful what you wish for. Would a sox collapse make them hit an offseason panic button and open their piggy bank to go after a pujols and texas lefty?

  48. Wave Your Hat September 28th, 2011 at 4:18 pm

It’s a numbers game. If the Yanks carry 11 pitchers, which they probably will, one of Dickerson, Romine and Chavez will have to be left off.

Of those three, Chavez seems to me the least useful, given that ARod will not be replaced defensively and Chavez isn’t hitting enough to justify him pinch-hitting. Dickerson can pinch run and come in as a defensive outfielder, and give Joe flexibility if he needs to pinch hit for Gardner or Jones.

Romine probably won’t play either, but you know Joe loves defensive catchers. Plus, if Martin gets a concussion or sprains an ankle, they won’t be able to replace him because then he couldn’t play in the following series.

I’m not saying Chavez definitely won’t be on the roster and Romine definitely will be, I just think it is quite possible.

    vin,

I think he meant stones as in the stones to knock out the hated Red Sox by punting these games. On the contrary, Joe is trying hard to win these games and we’re fortunate that we haven’t stolen one out here.

We’ve killed lefties all year with this lineup and the worst thing we can do is beat Price tonight and allow the Sox into the playoffs without even forcing a 1-game playoff.

  52. UnKnown September 28th, 2011 at 4:21 pm

It sickens me how many commercials and advertisements I see with Red Sux players and highlights in them promoting the 2011 Postseason.

Freak they probably won’t even get in. The media’s love affair with these pukes is digusting.

Really hope they don’t make it in.

    Positives:

    What a gamer!

Yeah, Reyes is totally the kind of player you want to build a franchise around. Totally.

  55. LGY September 28th, 2011 at 4:23 pm

Cano will play in his 159th game tonight. Not to mention he played in the ASG and participated in the HR Derby.

They ran away with the division and everything else they could clinch. It gave Joe a perfect opportunity to make sure his core guys are close to 100% as possible before the playoffs start. There is a balance to be struck here, but instead he’s gone full bore with his most important hitters.

  56. pat September 28th, 2011 at 4:23 pm

    Jon Morosi
Etc: Beckett not available tonight. G163 starter still TBD. Papelbon and Aceves should be good to go tonight.

If Sox get to the postseason, Aceves should get multiple shares

  57. Yankee Trader September 28th, 2011 at 4:24 pm

All the teams have been playing their regulars. The Phillies who have had it sewn up for a long while have played their regulars pretty much the whole game against the Braves, and might end up, by doing so, play the Cardinals which could be a very tough opponent for them in the 1st round.

Will the Greatest team in the history of baseball, per the Boston Herald and many announcers, go the path of the 64 Phillies who were 6 1/2 games in front with 12 games to go and blew it. That losing streak started with Chico Ruiz stealing home for the Reds, while Frank Robinson was at bat! and continued with a flustered Gene Mauch pitching Chris Short and Jim Bunning on 2 days rest.

Will A-Gon witness his team again losing a chance at the playoffs on the last day two years in a row?

Will Terry Francona, voted the 2nd most liked manager by players in a SI poll be let go, without the club option being picked up?

pretty soon we’ll know the answers!!!!

    ID-

You make a very valid point, which we all witnessed last year when the pitching rich, marginal offense, Giants, beat the Phillies.

I bet the Rangers who likely will win tonight and get the WC, are hoping it’s the Red Sox, especially if there’s a playoff Thursday.

  75. J. Alfred Prufrock September 28th, 2011 at 4:41 pm

Well, I got my two wishes. Dellin dealin’ to The Jesus.

LGY, agree. Maybe Joe thinks Cano’s hot bat might get cooled off by missing a game, at least he’s the DH. Maybe Cano asked in because of the MVP race. I don’t know, but you made the guy play 14 innings and then had him in there the next day. I think I might gently tell my all-star second baseman he’s too important as of Friday to risk being fatigued or getting hurt. I don’t think, though, at DH he’ll have too much of a problem. He’ll be getting a day and a half off, as it were, and we don’t have to travel.

Nevertheless, you hope there isn’t some cumulative drain, due to that extras game.
    ///

If Alex’s BP can translate into games, we’re golden.

Now, I’ll sneak back into my discussion group and hope no one gives me that “you’ve been on the internet, and not doing research, but combing baseball sites…” Guilty, but I’ll never tell :D .

They Rays also have a better chance of beating the Rangers or the Tigers. I’d rather play a weak offense than play the Rangers. I don’t look forward to playing in the Trap tho.

I’m not rooting for anyone, but I guess you could say I’m rooting against the Sox on principle alone.

  85. tucker September 28th, 2011 at 4:46 pm

They had to activate Buchholz becaus Aceves’ arm is about to fall off. He has pitched multiple innings for three consecutive games. They need somebody to cover the soft underbelly of the middle innings. Besides Aceves, the only relievers Francona trusts are Pap and Bard – and Bard a lot less son in recent weeks.

  86. nyyfana September 28th, 2011 at 4:47 pm

Thanks RayVT. I meant that seriously, not as a harassment type thing. I get down after losses, sometimes I run out of friends to talk to, because they all hate my obsession with sports.

Those of you championing for Tampa to make the playoffs need to get your head examined.

    ——————————————

Yeah, except that I just hate Boston and want to see their fans suffer, and I recognize that who I cheer for has nothing to do with the outcome of the games, so…I root against Boston and whatever happens is going to happen. I/ve got not control over it.

  88. LGY September 28th, 2011 at 4:47 pm

Tampa’s offense is on par with the 2010 Giants except their pitching is worse and the road to the WS is tougher.

Not to mention that the Giants are an anomaly by winning the WS with such a weak lineup.

  89. Wave Your Hat September 28th, 2011 at 4:48 pm

“Would you tell me their offense is worse than the 2010 Giants?”

The 2010 Giants scored 697 runs without a DH. The 2011 Rays have scored 699 with a DH.

  90. LGY September 28th, 2011 at 4:49 pm

    True. Forgot about the DH.

  92. munson15 September 28th, 2011 at 4:54 pm

I’m in the Trisha camp. I don’t care who we play, I just want to see the Sox finish of this monster choke job. Just think how nice the fall and winter would be should that happen.

  93. Purenyyankee September 28th, 2011 at 4:56 pm

This whole A lineup needs to play about 3 innings at best. Get these guys to the bench and get all the kids in there. And let that Loser Proctor pitch the last 5 innings, or until his arm falls off.

  94. blake September 28th, 2011 at 4:58 pm

Montero catching. + Betances pitching = yay!

The core guys need to play today with the off day tomorrow and the irregular PT lately……now they don’t have to play the whole game….but they need to get a couple of at bats.

  95. Yankee Trader September 28th, 2011 at 4:59 pm

Can you imagine how much pressure the players, the manager, and the front office the RS have after being labled the greatest team ever assembled?

That’s a book I’d like to read if the Sox miss the playoffs, written by Francona after his unwarrented termination.

  96. m September 28th, 2011 at 4:59 pm

If you’re a Yankee fan, you gotta be cheering for a total collapse by the Choke Sox.

  97. blake September 28th, 2011 at 5:00 pm

Id keep Tex is the 3 spot vs lefties.

  98. Irreverent Discourse September 28th, 2011 at 5:00 pm

Don’t mistake what I said… I am cheering for the Sox to choke… tomorrow. I would still rather play them in a 7 game series than the Rays.

  99. Purenyyankee September 28th, 2011 at 5:03 pm

A Blowsox collapse eases some of the 2004 pain. Go Rays and Go O’s!

  100. Yankee Trader September 28th, 2011 at 5:03 pm

    Blake-

Will Girardi pull the regulars if the game is close and the RS are tied or close in their game, and it’s the 5th or 6th inning?

  101. blake September 28th, 2011 at 5:03 pm

It is kinda garbage to bunt for a hit and then come out of the game…….I hope Braun goes 5-5 tonight.

  102. Nick in SF September 28th, 2011 at 5:04 pm

My ideal scenario: Betances goes four strong innings, AJ comes in to get his throw day work in, goes one or two innings and the Yanks take a lead, hold on to win, AJ gets his 12th win of the season.

Meanwhile the Socks lose, playoff tomorrow.

  103. Bryan September 28th, 2011 at 5:05 pm

So glad Clueless Joe is giving guys a rest

  104. blake September 28th, 2011 at 5:05 pm

    Trader,

My guess is he pulls some or them early either way.

  105. Bryan September 28th, 2011 at 5:05 pm

My ideal scenario Betances gets effing shelled in the first

  106. tomingeorgia September 28th, 2011 at 5:05 pm

O’s win tonight, doesn’t matter if the Rays win or not. Good outcome either way. We can beat the Rays later, if they (or we) are there. I want Texas, but not enough to care one way or the other. Beat the team that faces you. That simple.

  107. m September 28th, 2011 at 5:06 pm

    ID,

So your 2 desires are mutually exclusive. You want the Sox to choke tomorrow, but you wouldn’t be playing them in the ALCS. :P

Anyway, I’d like to win today, but that means the Sox need to lose.

  108. Irreverent Discourse September 28th, 2011 at 5:07 pm

    m – Yes, this knife… it’s sharp on both side :)

  109. Irreverent Discourse September 28th, 2011 at 5:08 pm

I guess I could also say my desire to not play a playoff game in Fenway outweighs my thinking the Rays are a stronger team… so conflicted. :p

  110. pat September 28th, 2011 at 5:09 pm

“I’ve been saying for a week he needs to be resting his core guys.”

    Yes you have.

Cashman, ownership, the players, the training staff, the coaches and heck even the players mother doesn’t seem to agree with you though because if any of those people called Girardi and said Player X looks like he needs a few days, Girardi probably would have given him a few days and all those people know the players better than fans do.

  111. Yankee Trader September 28th, 2011 at 5:10 pm

    Nick that works for me.

However to add to the ideal scenario: Red Sox are leading going into the bottom of the 9th, Paplebon gives up 3 runs to tie the game, which goes well into tomorrow morning before the Sox lose to the Orioles, then fly to Tampa, no rest, for a playoff game Thursday.

Plus the weather in Baltimore calls for scattered thundershowers at gametime!

  112. blake September 28th, 2011 at 5:12 pm

The core guys have been rested……at least the ones that need it…..some guys need to play every day to stay sharp and you have to have guys both rested and sharp for Friday.

  113. LGY September 28th, 2011 at 5:15 pm

and all those people know the players better than fans do.

    ——

Let’s shut down the blog because the Yankees are always right.

I remember when the Yankees knew Aceves couldn’t hold up this season and now he’s saved their chief rivals this season. Funny how they sometimes get things wrong.

  114. Ys Guy September 28th, 2011 at 5:17 pm

it seems that most of the people who are really worried about how much rest the guys are getting are really rooting for the red socks to lose….hmmmmm…….

  115. RayVT September 28th, 2011 at 5:17 pm

    nyyfana September 28th, 2011 at 4:47 pm

power outtage delays during extra innings in the playoff game….

  117. RayVT September 28th, 2011 at 5:18 pm

I’m leaving at 5:30 so if you can call now do & if not call me tomorrow.

  118. Red Robin September 28th, 2011 at 5:22 pm

    All,

I doubt the Red Sucks would collapse.

They have been finding gold nuggets left and right these days.

Put Lowrie in, he gets big hits and scores big runs.
Put N. Drew in, he gets big hits.
Put Lavern in, she gets three run homers.

Of course, Illsbury keeps hitting at least 2 homers every game, and Scoooteroooo becoming that next Ted Williams.

They just can do no wrong.

  119. nyyfana September 28th, 2011 at 5:24 pm

I only meant if the Yankees lose a game in the postseason. I may, though, be depressed tomorrow IF the red sox make it.

  120. Ys Guy September 28th, 2011 at 5:24 pm

those werent gold nuggets, they were cow patties….

  121. RayVT September 28th, 2011 at 5:24 pm

I am not concerned about Beantown or Tampa. Texas & Tigers have my attention. I doubt that the WC team gets by either Texas or Tigers.

The Yanks are rested & the BP is too. Montero adds a huge factor to facing LHP & RHP for that matter. The resurgence of Posada helps as well & the BUC being Posada & Montero even gives me comfort. Chavez is healthy & I think ARod is about to peak again. Things look very very good to me in a NYY kind of way!

If the only thing the Yanks need to worry about is a 3rd SP from AJ, Colon & Garcia then that is a good thing! The BP gets deeper with possibly 1 or 2 of them along with Hughes as well.

  122. Red Robin September 28th, 2011 at 5:25 pm

Heck, even though Lestor is on three-days rest, he will probably pitch a masterful or very good (or great) game tonight.

I predict a win for the Sucks (probably with a total domination of B-More).

The only question is how many homers will Illsbury hit.

  123. RayVT September 28th, 2011 at 5:27 pm

    nyyfana September 28th, 2011 at 5:24 pm

As General Stonewall Jackson said to one of his Generals before a big battle, “General never take counsel of your fears!”

The Yanks are well prepared for this moment. # 27 is at hand! Ripe for the taking! I think this team will get it done!

  124. Bryan September 28th, 2011 at 5:28 pm

    LETS GO TAMPA

    LETS GO TAMPA

    LETS GO TAMPA

    LETS GO TAMPA

  125. Nick in SF September 28th, 2011 at 5:29 pm

    ” # 27 is at hand!”

We’re going for #28, Ray. Subconscious sabotage?

  126. LGY September 28th, 2011 at 5:30 pm

I’m sorry for the snippiness. It annoys me to no end when people make the Yankees know better argument.

    Anyway, on a positive note

@Ledger_Yankees: If there are starters in this game past the sixth inning, I’d be shocked. #nyy

@ScottMCBSSports: Jeter close to .300. Girardi hints he’ll remove him tonite from game if he gets there. #NYYankees

@ScottMCBSSports: Girardi may pull other regulars after couple of ABs. Said he will see how game goes.

  127. nyyfana September 28th, 2011 at 5:31 pm

You do realize we’re going for #28?

  128. RayVT September 28th, 2011 at 5:32 pm

    LOL! Right!

  129. RayVT September 28th, 2011 at 5:32 pm

    28
    Bye 4 Now!

  130. LGY September 28th, 2011 at 5:35 pm

    Later.

    Go O’s!

    Go Rays!

    Stay healthy Yankees!!

  131. blake September 28th, 2011 at 5:36 pm

LGY ran out of bacon…..thus the snippiness

  132. Betsy September 28th, 2011 at 5:42 pm

I just heard that Jose Reyes pulled himself out of today’s game after bunting for a hit in his first at bat…………thereby making Ryan Braun have to go 2-2 or 3 for 4 to win the BA. That’s so insulting to the game – I hope Braun wins the thing out right tonight

  133. Ys Guy September 28th, 2011 at 5:46 pm

hey leave jose alone, he already lost $25M or so off his next contract in the last 2 months.

  134. Betsy September 28th, 2011 at 5:47 pm

I’m sorry, but we won the division without Aceves so I hardly think he was indispensable to our efforts. I have absolutely no problem with Cashman wanting to wait and see how Aceves back looked (not to mention his shoulder) before he committed to him. I don’t care if he’s saved the Sox or not – it doesn’t make the decision, which was made prior to the season, wrong.

  135. Red Robin September 28th, 2011 at 5:54 pm

I am surprise at the preponderance of unwillingness to plunk Illsbury.

If I have my way, I would not only knock him out but also make sure he will never get back up.

  136. m September 28th, 2011 at 6:06 pm

“At this hour lefty Bruce Chen was still in Minnesota with the Royals and still tonight’s scheduled starter vs. the Twins. But Theo Epstein has been seen with his phone to his ear a lot in the past few minutes, so stay tuned.” (extra bases)

Seriously? I have a hard time believing that the Sox are bottom fishing for a starter for tomorrow when their season is on the line. When there are jobs on the line.

  137. Yogi Mantle September 28th, 2011 at 6:06 pm

Reyes isn’t the only player to get pulled from a game when they have a BA lead on the last day. It isn’t like there is anything that the Mets are playing for. I just don’t see it as being a big deal either way.

Braun having to earn it? Again, big deal. If he does good for him. He could also end going 0- so it is on him.
