A day later, Yankees win Game 1

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Oct 01, 2011 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

This was worth the wait. One day after it started, the Yankees won the opening game of the ALDS by playing their best baseball in weeks. Robinson Cano tied a franchise postseason record with six RBI, Ivan Nova pitched 6.1 innings of one-run ball and the Yankees defense was outstanding in a 9-3 win against the Tigers. Cano delivered the big blow in the sixth, hitting a grand slam off reliever Al Alburquerque, who had not allowed a home run all season. Nova almost finished what he kind of started. CC Sabathia will still go down as this game’s starting pitcher, but it was Nova who got all but the last two outs tonight, allowing just four hits, all of them singles.

    Hoot 1-0!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. Bret The Hitman October 1st, 2011 at 11:34 pm

    Add Noesi, drop Ayala. Thank you.

  3. LockDown October 1st, 2011 at 11:34 pm

    So getting a couple of hits off Ayala is going to have a residual affect on the tigers for tomorrow? :roll:

    Huge to get this first one….great game

  5. hairy lucchino October 1st, 2011 at 11:36 pm

    Just terrible by Joe using Mo in this game. Awful. Could have left Nova in there, he’s worked out of jams all season long. He had a measly 3 baserunners, he easily wouldve gotten out of it against the bottom of the order. Awful

  6. jmv October 1st, 2011 at 11:36 pm

    HaHaHa, that AB vs Mo was hilarious. Almost cheating

  7. Niblick October 1st, 2011 at 11:36 pm

    Looks like A-rod might be MIA in this series. Again.

  8. MG October 1st, 2011 at 11:36 pm

    great performance by the Yankees tonight, period.

    they wore down a tough starter with good stuff and Robbie took care of a guy who hadn’t given up a dinger all season.

    and, if Ayala giving up those hits keeps him on the end of the bullpen bench for the rest of the postseason or off the roster for the ALCS and WS I’m down with that as well…

  9. TheStraw October 1st, 2011 at 11:36 pm

    Post game on YES now.

  10. CB October 1st, 2011 at 11:37 pm

    One of the recurring themes in Yankee history has been their ability to get great production from up the middle positions – positions most teams have light hitting players stationed at.

    And tonight Cano showed again how valuable having plus talent at those premium positions is.

    He simply dominated the game. Knocks in six runs in a game where Fister started off very strongly.

    Great game from the Yankee second baseman. He controlled this game.

  11. m October 1st, 2011 at 11:37 pm

    It’s only 1 game. But to be fair, A-rod has been MIA for a while. Lucky thing he passed the torch before it died out.

  12. Yogi Mantle October 1st, 2011 at 11:37 pm

    Robbie taking care of bidness.

  13. Tabbert October 1st, 2011 at 11:37 pm

    0-5 for arod. sigh

  14. Giuseppe Franco October 1st, 2011 at 11:38 pm

    The lightening they caught with Ayala has left the bottle.

    Very unfortunate they even had to use Mo.

    Outside of that 9th inning, this game couldn’t have gone any better.

  15. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 1st, 2011 at 11:38 pm

    So far my prediction of a sweep is in tact!

    If those of you who weren’t here at the begining read the thread in the first inning, you would have known the Yankees were doomed!

    :roll:

    But interestingly enough, it appears a lot of those posters stopped posting as soon as the Yanks were winning. WTF is up with that?

  16. Captain Clutch October 1st, 2011 at 11:38 pm

    You can guarantee Girardi will leave AJ in too long in his start. For a guy that was a catcher in the majors his feel for pitching and when a starting pitcher is done is really awful.

  17. Yankee Trader October 1st, 2011 at 11:38 pm

    Hopefully A-Rod will come around tomorrow. Only Yankee without a hit

  18. Tabbert October 1st, 2011 at 11:39 pm

    doubles to left, center, homer to right. Safe to say cano is impossible to defend.

    +++++++
    Alex hasn’t been healthy for a while. That might have a bit to do with it. No?

    He is getting close, but all that time off has taken his timing away.

  20. DocTodd October 1st, 2011 at 11:39 pm

    Hope Mo was serious when he told Kay he wants to pitch until he’s 50… :)

  21. CB October 1st, 2011 at 11:39 pm

    Robbi’s last 10 post season games – 5 home runs and 12 RBI while hitting .375.

    The days of Cano seeming “unclutch” are a long time ago.

  22. LockDown October 1st, 2011 at 11:39 pm

    Please let A-Rod find his groove. Imagine how many runs this team could score if a-rod gets hot.

  23. Shame Spencer October 1st, 2011 at 11:40 pm

    1. Fantastic start by Nova. Showed that he can handle this stage tonight. The games are only going to get tougher but I have total confidence in the kid.

    2. For all the crap YS gets about attendance.. I was completely blown away by how packed the stadium was tonight after the suspension of play last night. Thats a lot of bridge and tunnel money, subway rides, parking and concession costs on back to back nights but the crowd not only showed up but was also really loud – best fans in baseball.

    3. I think if we can win tomorrow’s game, where Freddy lasts at least five (eliminating the need for Hughes), AJ pitching the next game is the best move. I’d like Hughes to be available in AJ’s start but its going to hinge on Freddy’s performance.

  24. Joe from Long Island October 1st, 2011 at 11:40 pm

    CB, being strong up the middle has worked for a lot of teams over the years.

    Montero, Cano, Granderson…..they’re set up for a while.

  25. Tarheel In NYC October 1st, 2011 at 11:40 pm

    I believe Mo has said before that he doesn’t like going more than 2-3 days without pitching; he likes to work and stay loose. I don’t think he’s pitched since Sunday? I don’t see the big deal about Mo coming in for 1 measly out.

    Great game by the Yankees :)

  26. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 1st, 2011 at 11:40 pm

    GF, I don’t believe using Mo was any big deal. He threw three pitches. He hasn’t thrown in 4 days. Nothing says he has to close out every game. And nothing says it will go 4 more games or that he will be needed or used in every one!

    As Girardi says, you worry about today’s game today. Worry about tomorrow’s game tomorrow. Play today, win today.

    It’s all good.

  27. Captain Clutch October 1st, 2011 at 11:40 pm

    Ayala never should of made the roster over Noesi or even Colon. Ayala’s best innings have been in blow outs. He has never been good in close games. Today wasn’t even a close game and he was garbage.

  28. DocTodd October 1st, 2011 at 11:41 pm

    ARod did hit a ball well to CF, I think he’s coming around…

  29. blake October 1st, 2011 at 11:41 pm

    Not to belabor the point….but having Robbie in that 3 hole is so nice because he hits good pitching and he has no weakness to pitch to…..before when Tex was there in a big spot then pitchers knew if they made there pitches they could get out of the jam…..they don’t have that luxury with Cano in that spot because he can hit everything…..and if they want to pitch around him then you still have Alex and Tex to deal with.

  30. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 1st, 2011 at 11:41 pm

    “I don’t see the big deal about Mo coming in for 1 measly out.”

    That’s because it wasn’t a big deal. If it were he wouldn’t have been in there…

  31. Yankees_Fan October 1st, 2011 at 11:42 pm

    Excellent win that was two days in the making. Can’t say enough great things about Nova. After a great season, he was amazing on this one. Cano seems to want part of the rights to “Mr. October” with a day for the ages, with 6 RBIs as part of his two doubles and a grand slam night. Great defense by Granderson, Jeter and Martin on the out-at-the-plate play.

    It would have been perfect if Ayala got the job done. Not being able to get those last two outs so we didn’t have to use Mariano was pathetic. If he can’t do that’ he has no use being on the roster. Noesi can certainly do a better job than that. You can take him out of the roster if we move to the next round.

    Thankfully, Mo just threw 3 pitches.

  32. Nilsson October 1st, 2011 at 11:42 pm

    Very happy to go up 1-0 and without CC doing the heavy lifting yet.

  33. LockDown October 1st, 2011 at 11:42 pm

    I think we could sweep this series. I think this offense can hit anyone

  34. Joe from Long Island October 1st, 2011 at 11:43 pm

    GF, agreed, the lightning seems to have left Ayala. Not just tonight, either, but past few appearances. Again, he didn’t get hit hard, but, you wonder if his time has passed……

    It’s a fair question to ask if he’s replaced on next round’s roster (I’m thinking ahead, always dangerous) – Noesi, or Colon.

  35. Yankee Trader October 1st, 2011 at 11:43 pm

    Goodnight everyone

  36. Bret The Hitman October 1st, 2011 at 11:43 pm

    The Yankees won plenty without Arod this year. They don’t need Arod to win anything in the post season. If they get what they got from Nova, it could be a special end to an already special year.

  37. PittsburghYankeeFan October 1st, 2011 at 11:43 pm

    ARod is hurt. I’d be more worried about production from your number 4 than if your closer is getting his work in and you ask him to come in for a few more.

  38. UnKnown October 1st, 2011 at 11:44 pm

    Plesac on MLB Network still thinks Yankee fans need to worry still. It’s 50/50 series.

    Keep doubting the Bombers, experts. All the way to the parade down the Canyon

  39. raymagnetic October 1st, 2011 at 11:45 pm

    Seemed inconsequential at the time when Gordon was used in a 19-8 game. Just saying.

  40. Betsy October 1st, 2011 at 11:45 pm

    Fortunately Mo only threw a few pitches – but the point is that it’s sad he had to come in. I don’t think it’s a big deal, but Ayala is a complete waste; I don’t know why the Yankees didn’t replace him with Noesi, esp. since AJ is going to pitch game 4. That makes no sense. He’s completely redundant. Hughes or Wade will pitch these types of garbage innings – and probably better than he is capable of doing.

    Not necessarily worried about Mo throwing three pitches, but just a bit annoyed that they needed Mo to come in after starting the 9th inning with an 8-run lead.

    early day tomorrow.

    good night, all

  44. LockDown October 1st, 2011 at 11:46 pm

    I would like to see Colon instead of Ayala. I know he ran out of gas, but with a week off & then start throwing, maybe he could get some of it back to be able to pitch up to 3 innings, but only needing him mainly for 1-2 innings.

  45. CB October 1st, 2011 at 11:46 pm

    I thought Alex looked better tonight. Didn’t get a hit – but it was better than he looked before.

    I think he’s getting closer.

    If they can get him going with how Robbi is swinging they are going to be very difficult to match up with.

    I also thought Tex had some good at bats. That opposite field double on a pitch away was great to see. That’s exactly the pitch he’s constantly pulling off of.

  46. Captain Clutch October 1st, 2011 at 11:46 pm

    I hope Arod’s issue is timing and not that his thumb is bothering him. Cashman said the other day that he “is banged up” had no idea what to expect from him because he missed so much time.

  47. Betsy October 1st, 2011 at 11:47 pm

    If he thinks Yankee fans need to worry, what do Tiger fans need to do? Of course the Tigers can still win, but this is why I don’t care about any post-game analysis. I don’t need to hear the mediots try to explain why the Yankees suck.

  48. Tarheel In NYC October 1st, 2011 at 11:47 pm

    Being anti-Yankee is what keeps the ratings up and reels in the viewers. Let ‘em rave about the Tigers. The Yankees will quietly get it done.

    Lockdown, I don’t think Colon has anything left…..rest isn’t going to cure him, not this short type anyway. He needs the off-season to recuperate.

  51. LockDown October 1st, 2011 at 11:48 pm

    I disagree that we don’t need anything from A-rod. Sure they won w/o him BUT he is now in the lineup and batting 4th. So him producing will be big, especially if they start to walk Cano.

  52. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 1st, 2011 at 11:48 pm

    Wouldn’t be lohud if posters didn’t find something to bit*h about, even after a great win.

    Always a pleasure.

    To me it was all good. I’m sure Ayala didn’t want to go out there and give up runs. He’s on the postseason roster so you might as well try to support him rather than call him garbage and trash him whenever he comes in.

    Good Yankee fans!

    Night all.

  59. Yogi Mantle October 1st, 2011 at 11:52 pm

    Trisha, I wouldn’t have cared much about the runs Ayala gave up if they were his runs. The trouble is they were all of Nova’s runs, which just irks me.

    I don’t think Colon has anything left
    ————-

    I think Colon would be fine as a reliever. He would only be asked to give them 30-40 pitches at most. Throwing 100 pitches is what has given him trouble.

  62. Yogi Mantle October 1st, 2011 at 11:55 pm

    The thumb issue was the bigger injury to Alex. The knee might be tender now and then, but the thumb meant he had to add that tape to the bat just to hold it. Alex did hit the ball hard a few times, so he is coming along.

    Some of his AB’s looked rough, but he’s done that through his career. His timing is just a little off, and it is getting really close. Once it gets there, he will be fine.

  63. LockDown October 1st, 2011 at 11:56 pm

    Betsy,

    I hear you about Colon. But it doesn’t hurt to have him travel with the team. Have him start a long toss, then a bp session at the end of the series (or before WS) to see if he has his velocity & 2 seam movement back. If he doesn’t, then yeah he’s done & will only get worse. But I just wouldn’t give up on him.

    LockDown, it doesn’t suprise me either, but it did bring the game buzz down a bit till Mo came in and did the “LockDown”.

    It just bugs me that a reliever can come in, give up other pitcher’s runs, and not have their own line hurt at all. Especially since Nova had been pitching a gem. In the grand scheme those runs meant nothing, but they did put stats against Nova that he didn’t really deserve.

    Alex is more than just a great player, too. He’s mentored Cano
    ———-

    I read an article the other day and Cashman said that he begged Arod to mentor Cano. After Torre and Girardi had to bench him for not hustling Cash thought that he needed Arod to get in his ear. He also said that they never give out extensions and buy out arbitration years with kids but he knew that Cano was worth it.

  86. CB October 2nd, 2011 at 12:10 am

    The Yankees probability for winning the series increased from around 51-52% to around 67% by winning this game.

    Fister vs. Nova was supposed to be a significant advantage for Detroit. And it played out exactly the opposite.

    And just from watching the at bats today and the way the yankees adjusted – i think they’ll do well against Fister in a game 5 if it comes to that. Fister will have to add a new wrinkle. If he doesn’t the yankees are going to do well against him with the bats.

  87. Yogi Mantle October 2nd, 2011 at 12:13 am

    Alex is a great baseball player. Not only for his physical talents, but also for what he does with other players. He is respected in the clubhouse, finally, for all he brings to it. I think Alex has also gotten better since his admission. He was humbled, and he just seems so much more genuine now.

    What amazes me about Alex is his studying of the game. He picks up on so much of what is going, remembers which pitches are thrown to him, which ones he hit.

  88. Betsy October 2nd, 2011 at 12:15 am

    Clutch, I vaguely remember that as well. Alex is very good with the young kids…….I really love the guy; I feel bad for him that he’s just kind of lost this year.

    Whoa. Just went to XB, to see if Pete is blogging about the playoffs (No) and saw two interesting things.

    John Henry fell on his yacht and got hurt, so he could make the presser celebrating Tito’s contributions.

    When asked about Theo to the Cubs, none of the Sox brass ruled it out. Pete thinks it’s unlikely that Theo, a Bostonian would abandon his team in its time of need.

    And I thought this was hilarious (Pete insisting the first rule from new mgt should be running hard to first no matter what) “Don’t sort of move forward glacially like David Ortiz. “

    Alex has already started the process of mentoring Montero – he invited Montero to spend time with him in Miami this winter – and Alex did that when he was doing his rehab in AAA before Montero even came up.

    That’s just so valuable for Alex to do. It’s very generous. And given his talent – the things Montero needs to learn from now on are the things that Alex has learned from experience and can see with this baseball intellect.

    I would really like to see Alex be the Yankees GM one day or have some kind of leadership role. His baseball IQ is outstanding.

    CB, I don’t think this will go 5 games.

    Tomorrow is the hardest game they have. Garcia can pitch really well, can keep hitters off balance, but it is such a fine line given his velocity.

    Alex as GM would be pretty cool – at least he should have some role with the Yankees.

    I guess the days of talking about whether Jeter is done are gone……

    Clutch, I love that quote – Cano has a radiant smile; he’s a very happy person and clearly loves the game.

  96. Yogi Mantle October 2nd, 2011 at 12:20 am

    I think Martin, even with his offense, is a great fit for this team. He seems to have enough of a sense of humor to keep things light, he works well with the pitchers. He is pretty tough as well.

  97. Betsy October 2nd, 2011 at 12:21 am

    LOL I love that Martin quote – I love the guy, have from the first. I never cared about his offense- he just does so many things well as a catcher.

  98. hardwired7 October 2nd, 2011 at 12:21 am

    We need to invent some new game for Cano because obviously baseball is just too damn easy for him.

  99. m October 2nd, 2011 at 12:22 am

    I don’t know. $32M is a lot to pay a GM. I kid, I kid!

    I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to give the impression that I’m upset or impatient with A-rod in the last thread. I know he’s injured, that was a given.

    To be clear, I was NOT complaining about A-rod when I responded to Niblick.

  100. pat October 2nd, 2011 at 12:23 am

    In a game last week, Montero made a base running gaffe at 3B and YES showed a picture of him sitting in the dugout talking to Alex right after that and I thought- School is in session- when I saw it.

  101. Ys Guy October 2nd, 2011 at 12:23 am

    alex as gm? you are kidding right?

  102. Yogi Mantle October 2nd, 2011 at 12:24 am

    CB, I could see Alex as a GM or some kind of scout for talent. He has picked a number of players that he said would have good years and has been right about them. He picks up on a lot of things that I think get missed by most people.

    Of course, with the money he will have from his playing days, he won’t really need the money. I’m just not sure if he would know what to do with himself if he didn’t have baseball.

  103. m October 2nd, 2011 at 12:26 am

    I think Alex and Jeter will both be minority owners of a baseball team. Jeter of course will continue his relationship with the Yankees.

    Alex would fit well with his hometown Marlins.

  104. Ys Guy October 2nd, 2011 at 12:26 am

    i never believed alex was as dumb as people like to portray him, but i dont see him as gm material. thats a big jump

  105. Captain Clutch October 2nd, 2011 at 12:26 am

    Look at Jeter with the shiny necklace. Bling…bling…

  106. CB October 2nd, 2011 at 12:27 am

    YM,

    I hope they can wrap it up soon and get CC lined up for the next round.

    With Freddie – there is some uncertainty given how he ended the season. But I think he’s going to do well. Overall he was consistent for the vast majority of the season – and his last start was quite good.

    And the other part of this equation is Scherzer. He’s a fly ball pitcher who has given up home runs at a very high rate.

    One of the effects of the rain out was to move Scherzer’s start from Detroit to NY. And that really hurts him. He’s been significantly better at home in that huge ball park.

    He’s going to have to be very careful with the Yanks line up – especially their left handed power hitters.

  107. Captain Clutch October 2nd, 2011 at 12:28 am

    Speaking of Montero I hope he gets a start in this series

  108. Yogi Mantle October 2nd, 2011 at 12:28 am

    M, I don’t think Alex is really quite what you would call injured. Its more like he is recovering. He is mostly there, but the time off he had has really hurt his timing.

    He lost the part of the season where things really gel for batters, it’s like he is still in ST form, while the pitching he has to face is in post season form. That is a lot to make up for.

    Tonight he hit it hard a few times with nothing to show for it. That shows some promise. Its why I was disappointed that he didn’t play more during the last part of the season. He needed the ABs for his timing, and the games didn’t mean all that much.

  109. m October 2nd, 2011 at 12:29 am

    Leyland went with a guy who hadn’t allowed a home run in 43.1 innings and had a phenomenal strikeout rate. He just threw a slider that didn’t bite and Cano jacked it into the second deck for the 50th grand slam in postseason history.

  110. Captain Clutch October 2nd, 2011 at 12:30 am

    RobinsonCano That felt good! Did it look good? Go Yankees!! Thank you fans, see you tomorrow

  111. GreenBeret7 October 2nd, 2011 at 12:30 am

    Some of you people shouldn’t be allowed around a TV set to watch a game. They didn’t hit the ball hard enough off of Ayala to leave a mark on the ball or bend the grass. A soft roller to shortstop that wasn’t hit hard enough to get a DP, a soft roller through the 6-5 hole and a soft parachute job into center field. Of course, these same idiots are complaining about Rodriguez, who hit the ball hard twice and was called out on a strike on a pitch closer to New Jersey than the plate. Go take up crocheting or knitting. baseball is clearly not for you.

  112. Carlo October 2nd, 2011 at 12:31 am

    Loved the performance tonight. Was cold up there. Reminded me of the weather back in the day when the october nights at the stadium were brisk. For some reason, I feel like our record in day games in october kinda stinks. I’m not sure what the numbers are but would love to know the answer going back to say 2000.

  113. GreenBeret7 October 2nd, 2011 at 12:31 am

    CB, a three game sweep would be ideal. Otherwise, Sabathia won’t start until the 2nd game of the ALCS.

  114. CB October 2nd, 2011 at 12:31 am

    “i never believed alex was as dumb as people like to portray him, but i dont see him as gm material. thats a big jump”

    Don’t know what he’s like in any other walk of life – but baseball wise he’s unbelievable. He really has fantastic insight into baseball. It’s not even close to being only physical with him.

    His attention and insights into the game are phenomenal. When he starts talking in detail about the game – it’s something else.

    He can go through entire pitch sequences of at bats analyzing what the thought process of the pitcher was – for other hitters. Not even his at bats – but other players at bats.

    He knows the game inside and out.

    It’s unfortunate that the press has just asked him such dumb questions so often throughout his career. He’s a real cage rat.

    I would try to keep him in a leadership position of his chosing when he’s ready to step away.

  115. GreenBeret7 October 2nd, 2011 at 12:33 am

    Rodriguez is more like Nolan ryan…part owner and talent evaluator

  116. CB October 2nd, 2011 at 12:36 am

    “I think Alex and Jeter will both be minority owners of a baseball team. Jeter of course will continue his relationship with the Yankees.”

    I agree – I think this is what they will do (or at least try to). The marlins with Alex is a very good guess.

    I could see Alex as a vice- president/ part owner kind of deal.

    With Jeter it’ll be interesting – not easy to get a piece of the yankees – especially when the team has been valuated at 1.75B through minority ownership stakes.

  117. Yogi Mantle October 2nd, 2011 at 12:37 am

    CB, we are in complete agreement.

    I think the odds are pretty good for a Yankee win tomorrow. Not as high as we might hope for, but I think they are decent.

    The Tigers have a tough lineup to navigate through. Garcia is experienced, which can help in these type of games. It will be interesting to see how Scherzer handles the game tomorrow. He doesn’t have good memories in YS, so that might also have him more on edge. He was set up to pitch at home, so the rain delay changed that plan.

    Garcia is another pitcher who just doesn’t seem to get rattled, no matter what is going on. That is a real plus.

    Its one of the things that I think has held Shields down a bit. He seems to get a bit emotional when he gives up a big hit or HR, and then it affects his performance possibly more than it should.

  118. m October 2nd, 2011 at 12:38 am

    CB,

    I think Jeter has his eye on Jennifer (Swindal) Steinbrenner.

    Bigger slice of the pie. ;)

  119. GreenBeret7 October 2nd, 2011 at 12:39 am

    Jeter and/or Rodriguez could take a run at buying a minor league team or a couple of them and affiliate themselves with the Yanks before going big league.

  120. m October 2nd, 2011 at 12:41 am

    Watching Jeter’s interview with Ripken yesterday gave me a deeper understanding of just how much Jeter prepares for the game. He runs all the scenarios through his mind in the field. He’s a very good ball player, hopefully he passes on his knowledge like Alex is most likely to do.

  121. CB October 2nd, 2011 at 12:42 am

    Cano’s home run was such a moon shot.

    What a talent.

    Scherzer is going to have an interesting task tomorrow with Robbi at Yankees stadium with that short porch.

    Robbi is so quick to the ball – scherzer is going to have trouble throwing his fastball past Cano. And Scherzer has given up a lot of home runs this season.

    Going to be very interesting.

    Niblick October 1st, 2011 at 11:36 pm
    Looks like A-rod might be MIA in this series. Again.

    ~~~~~~~~~~
    He may be MIA through the playoffs. That’s why I don’t understand why Girardi has him batting cleanup. Makes no sense. Arod is injured and his swing has not returned.
  123. GreenBeret7 October 2nd, 2011 at 12:44 am
    m, that’s why I think Rodriguez gets into minor league ownership first….he likes to teach.
  124. Yogi Mantle October 2nd, 2011 at 12:45 am
    I’ve heard Alex talk about the game a few times that just left me in awe. He would be a great coach, but I’m not sure he would take that kind of role. Maybe a role like Reggie has.
    Not sure if he would want to spend the kind of money he would have to in order to take part ownership or if he would prefer some kind of role with the Yankees.
    I could see both Jeter and Alex as owners. Maybe they would go with minor league teams? It will be interesting to see what does happen with them when their playing days are over.
  125. Ys Guy October 2nd, 2011 at 12:47 am
    most people buy into baseball teams bc they want to be involved in baseball. arod doesnt need to do that.
    then again its probably a better career move than being a slumlord
  126. Yogi Mantle October 2nd, 2011 at 12:48 am
    GB, doesn’t Alex usually take some young player under his wing during the off season? I could see him having a blast in the minor leagues helping to bring out talent. His knowledge of the game should be passed on.
  127. GreenBeret7 October 2nd, 2011 at 12:51 am
    Usually takes a local kid or one of the U Of M kids, unless a young player on the yankees wants to join him. a kid like Laird, Nunez or Montero could really benefit from his crash courses, Yogi.
  128. pat October 2nd, 2011 at 12:54 am
    Andrew Marchand
    It is absolutely pouring in the Bronx
  129. m October 2nd, 2011 at 12:55 am
    Alex will be 40? I don’t see him jumping into an active baseball role right away. He likes the Hollywood/Miami scene, so I see him rubbing elbows before settling into a baseball role. He’s really too much of a celeb to be hanging out on the minor league circuit.
    I think Jeter will move right into a personal services contract with the Yankees. Not sure he’ll do it as long as Yogi has, but he Jeter certainly is more charming and humble than Mr. October.
  130. I Am Winning October 2nd, 2011 at 1:01 am
    People here really anger me.
    Half the idiots say Nova shouldn’t have started the 9th, too many pitches, at 80. Others say Ayala shouldn’t have been in the game because he is terrible and Cory Wade should have been brought in, although they have very similar numbers. Also that Nova should’ve stayed in to finish it? Uh, hello, were you watching the 9th inning? He started every batter off with a ball, and his fastball was as low as 90. This is part of the hindsight theory, morons. It’s extremely easy to say “doh, I knew it all along!” after the fact. Next time let me know in the 8th inning that Ayala is coming in the 9th, but it should’ve been Wade, than I’ll believe you’re a psychic.
    I love how this postseason brings so many people that really have no knowledge of baseball. As I’ve said before, debates are great and people need to learn some time, why not here? However, don’t make ridiculous arguments like Wade should’ve been in instead of Ayala, under what basis?
    Now, if it were up to me, I would’ve given Nova ONE batter at a time with the bases loaded considering all of the balls he was throwing early in the count, he seemed to be losing his stuff, likely that it was fatigue. If that didn’t work, bring in Ayala as Joe did, and after that I’m lost because Mo shouldn’t have EVER even warmed up for this game. We may need him for the next 3 games (no off days) and we may not be able to do that. However, it’s nobody’s fault, as the idiots on here believe it is, we won the game, and are only a couple away from going to the ALCS.
  131. mick October 2nd, 2011 at 1:03 am
    Did I do good?
  132. LGY October 2nd, 2011 at 1:04 am
    Scherzer vs LHBs this year: .281/.345/.496
  133. JobaTipsHisCap October 2nd, 2011 at 1:04 am
    that defensive play at home plate was HUGE!
    very good.
  134. Ys Guy October 2nd, 2011 at 1:05 am
    i am winning…. perhaps he didnt want mo sitting without pitching for 4 days.
    and isnt the charlie sheen thing pretty dead by now?
  135. Ys Guy October 2nd, 2011 at 1:07 am
    granderson’s throw hit jeter in the mitt at shoulder height, perfect place, then jeter’s throw to martin did the same. couldnt be done any better.
  136. I Am Winning October 2nd, 2011 at 1:11 am
    That can’t be the case, otherwise he would’ve brought him in for the 9th to begin with, not after Nova and Ayala couldn’t do it. I’m sure Girardi much rather have had Mo thrown a controlled bullpen session over pitching a live game with an 8 run lead in the 9th inning.
    I chose this username some time back, I don’t understand the issue?
  137. UnKnown October 2nd, 2011 at 1:11 am
    Mick you did great.
    I bet it was a lot of fun.
  138. JM October 2nd, 2011 at 1:37 am
    You did great, mick. The stadium sounded really loud tonight.
  139. mick October 2nd, 2011 at 1:39 am
    The Stadium shook on Robbie’s HR.
  140. sandy g October 2nd, 2011 at 11:28 am
    iam sure cashman is already looking into next years roster.he better think real hard into just having a rod dh all year and maybe he can not ware down.i believe montero could still be traded for the right starting pitcher such as gio gonzalez from oakland.my dream team for next year would be andrew mccutchen,curtis granderson,robby cano,albert pujols,alex rodriguez,jason heyward,derek jeter,pedro alvarez,russell martin.starting pitchers cc sabathia,ivan nova,gio gonzalez,yu darvish,manny banuelos.
