Rodriguez: “You can’t just turn off the switch and turn it on”

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Oct 07, 2011 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

After the bases-loaded strikeout and the game-ending strikeout, Alex Rodriguez stood at his locker last night and swore he was healthy enough to have done the job.

“Health had nothing to do with it,” he said.

Fair enough. The hip injury is in the past, the knee has been fixed and Rodriguez learned to deal with the sprained thumb, but less than a month ago, Rodriguez sat out a full week because of the thumb. A month before that, he was still on the disabled list because of the knee.

Being technically healthy now doesn’t mean this season’s nagging injuries didn’t play a role in his 2-for-18 division series. It’s surely no coincidence that he hit just .191 in the last two months of the regular season.

“Alex had injuries he obviously had to fight through,” Brian Cashman said. “He had surgery on the knee. He was tyring to do that on the run with the clock running out, so I’m sure it was a combination of health and trying to get his timing down. He gave the best effort he could. This guy’s a hard worker. He cares. He wants to be successful, and more times that not, he is. He’s hurting like the rest of us are here now. He’ll come back next year in great shape. When he’s healthy on an everyday bassis, he does perform, and he will perform again.”

The Yankees have little choice but to believe that’s true, that Rodriguez will perform again. He was healthy for the first two-plus months of the season and played more or less up to his usual standards.

What’s a reasonable expectation moving forward?

“I’d like to have a healthy year to think about that,” Rodriguez said. “When you have a knee surgery in the middle of the year, it messes everything up. Baseball is a game of repetition. It’s a game of 145 or 150 games and 600 at-bats. Obviously when you see guys like Curtis and Robbie and Tex and the tremendous years that they all had, you need at-bats. Baseballs a game that you can’t just turn off the switch and turn it on.”

Whatever, dude. You need to perform, period.

    Agree Don

It’s a no-win for Rodriguez and he commented the only way a ball player should answer it. He took the blame, he’ll take the heat and no excuses. I wouldn’t want to see it any other way. Let the others bring up the injuries and lack of preperation time needed to recover.

    Effort does not guarantee result.

No one works harder than ARod.

    He ran out of time.

I have to agree with Alex and Cash.

Absolutely, he is responsible for his play. Not one question about it.

But, baseball is a game of daily routine and repitition. He missed pitches he should have killed.

No excuses, it is what is and all that. But, the season caught up with him.

Nothing else to do but get thru winter and come back in February.

  7. GreenBeret7 October 7th, 2011 at 6:41 pm

If the thumb injury were the only thing and it happens in June, he has time. If he only has the knee injury that happens in June, but, no thumb injury, he has plenty of time. Between the two injuries, i don’t think he had 30 straight at bats without one or the other issues.

  8. Jeremy October 7th, 2011 at 6:41 pm

    I Agree Don.

The Yankee hitters in the middle of the lineup just flat out failed so no excuses. The Tigers are not that good of a team, their pen is average, and their rotation outside of Verlander is average.

They will be exposed by an actual good team with a real offense in the Texas Rangers.

    Posada gets a single that is hit so hard that ARod can’t score from second base;

    ___________________________________________________________________________

I had forgotten about that play. Just looked like ARod got a bad jump and should have scored easily, the ball if I remember wasn’t really even hit right at the OF’er. That did turn out to be a big run as I think ARod didn’t score.
    *******************************************************
Wrong! So wrong. This right here is proof why ARod gets a bat rep.
He broke on the ball so well.
Problem was the line drive single was a 1 hopper, directly at the CF. Only a speedster like Garnder could have possibly scored(maybe).
    ARod is not SUPERMAN.
Give the man a break already. I’m sick and tired of people here who post not facts, but outright lies. Stretching the truth to make a player look bad, for no good reason.

    ___________________________________________________________________________

Hence is the usual reaction when you offer an opinion. What I simply said was I thought he must have got a bad jump on the ball. My god give it a freakin break in here, I didn’t say a word about ARod I was just commenting on the play and it’s importance.

  10. GreenBeret7 October 7th, 2011 at 6:48 pm

Rodriguez was at about .295, 12 homers and 52 RBI at the time of the injury. That works out to a damned good season and his normal seasons. That’s what I would expect next season from him. Jeter with a little more next season with a bit more power. Teixeira, same power and maybe a little more production, but, the low average is up to him to fix. Can’t see Granderson repeating that season, but, maybe raising the average and lowering the strikeouts. Swisher had a normal season. Martin, I have no idea what to expect. I know that Posada will be greatly missed, especially in the clubhouse. He was the real captain of that team.

  11. m October 7th, 2011 at 6:49 pm

No, baseball’s not a game that you can turn on like a switch. But it’s easier when you simplify things.

I would think the thumb and the spacer was an issue. I don’t think he felt all that comfortable with it.

He had 2 months? I think it’s more than timing.

This is someone who is being paid as if he is the best player in baseball. He is far from that. That is the cold, hard truth.

WTP, Thomson would have held him up.

The Alex bashing, I agree, is the usual gratuitous variety from sloppy thinkers. I heard it all at the game last night around me, the word “a-hole” was the vitriol, between belches.
    ************************************************************************
If Alex made all 27 outs last night, then I would be 1st in line to blame the loss on him, LOL!!

Seriously, I totally have faith that ARod will return to 2012 with vengeance. I have no doubt in my mind.

  15. GreenBeret7 October 7th, 2011 at 6:54 pm

With the two injuries, any recovery and timing issues were completely lost. When his timing was coming around, the other injury happened and it was just a “start all over” thing and he ran out of games. For a hitter, legs, thumb and hands are everything

  16. Red Robin October 7th, 2011 at 6:55 pm

The problem isn’t A-Rod, Swisher, Teixeira … it is C.C. Sabathia.

  17. blake October 7th, 2011 at 6:56 pm

Alex isn’t done by any stretch………I don’t think you can really judge where he is until he stats healthy for an extended stretch …….all I want is for him to have an injury free year next season…..he does that and I think the numbers will be there.

His role is changing though…..he’s no longer to focal point of the offense after he has been for so long.

Tex needs to go back to his pre 2011 left handed swing.

Both hands on the bat doesn’t help him.

  20. Don October 7th, 2011 at 7:00 pm

Even Jeter failed in the clutch. (I thought he did reasonably well in the series, but he didn’t come through when it was desperately needed)

  21. m October 7th, 2011 at 7:01 pm

Okay, I’ll give you that it was timing issues. He hasn’t made much contact in recent memory.

I know that he’s the guy, he gets paid to be in that spot, and he’s done it before. But if his timing was been off and he’s not making contact, then he probably shouldn’t have been in that last at-bat. Not with the season on the line.

Of course, no one would ever remove him because that would be totally embarrassing.

To be fair, I was in the car for that last at-bat. But from what I could gather, he didn’t take the bat off his shoulder. I may be wrong about that, but I know he didn’t for the last 3 pitches of the at-bat. Was it good pitching? ESPN radio made a point to call strikes 2 & 3 at the knees.

  22. Carlos October 7th, 2011 at 7:02 pm

His left handed swing looked like this.

  23. m October 7th, 2011 at 7:04 pm

What you have to like about Tex is that he accepted his demotion in the lineup, and even responded at times.

Montero will be worming his way into the heart of the order soon. Alex will need to accept a change in the lineup, too, if his power doesn’t return.

  24. Jeremy October 7th, 2011 at 7:06 pm

Can we please stop with the predictions that A-rod will return to beast mode. We have been saying that for a few years now and it hasn’t happened. The guy is no longer the best player in the game, and after the PED use he has been dealing with one injury after another.

The only way he will have some superstar year is if he starts taking steroids again and that’s not going to happen. I would expect 25-30 homeruns a year at best from A-rod.

  25. blake October 7th, 2011 at 7:07 pm

Yankees fans can expect Montero to fly up north with the big club
after ST in 2012. No reason why he should not be on the 25 man.
He will be streaky. Do well. Fall into a slump some, etc….Just goes with
being a rookie in the AL east.
The future is now and Yankee fans should be thankful Montero is here to help as soon
    as 2012.

  29. Jeremy October 7th, 2011 at 7:11 pm

    M

I just recall a number of Tigers pitchers throwing meatballs down the plate and Tex and A-rod doing nothing with them. And I should include Martin on that list.

Benoit threw a BP fastball right down to middle to Alex bases loaded and he fouled it back. Just like Alex did against Paul Byrd in the 2007 ALDS with his 86 MPH fastball.

  30. GreenBeret7 October 7th, 2011 at 7:11 pm

Rodriguez doesn’t need to be the focal point, any more than Jeter does. What needs to happen is that all of them need to reduce or eliminate as many of their game flaws as possible. Even at their ages (for those 35 and above, it’s their big challenge), and the younger ones, especially players like Nunez, Gardner and even Cano need to fix their issues. Montero (regardless of what the clueless say) will still be in pinstripes and needs to put in long hours with Tony Pena and Long to work on things, but, he’s not that far away from giving NYYs Jorge Posada seasons or probably better. Gardner needs to learn when to be patient and when to be aggressive both with the bat and on the bases. Until then, he has no business leading off.

Pitchers like Hughes need to stay healthy and keep working on strengthening his arm and shoulder and cleaning up his breaking/offspeed pitches. Nova needs to improve his newfound toy, the slider to where it’s consistant every time. Robertson has plenty of work to do, too. Lowering those walks. If he’s to be Rivera’s heir, he can’t continually cause his own issues, because it will catch up to him.

Swisher and Teixeira both need complete overhauls. Burnett? Just got to get him to set up a giant video screen in his barn and watch the difference betweem the first inning and the last five and then, forget what he saw in the 1st inning.

Nobody said a damned thing about “beast mode”. His normal seasons would be in the .285-.300 range with 30-33 homers and 100-119 RBI. He’s more than capable for the next 3 years. And, again with the steroids? Give it a rest. If steroids gave a player a 5-7% advantage in increased numbers, I’d be shocked.

Pat M., Young’s playing skills reminds a lot of Granderson. Perfect for right or center field in YS, huh? Lot of strikeouts, but a lot of power and speed. Then, there’s the defense.

  42. LockDown October 7th, 2011 at 7:25 pm

At the beginning of the season, A-rod was great. So if healthy, I think he’ll have a very good year. So I’m not putting the onus on him for not getting it done. The added thumb injury set him back further & he didn’t have time to bounce back.

My issue is if he’s not ready then why start him especially when you have Teix & Swisher slumping behind him. They won games with the bench players filling in for his absence.

Teix needs to work on his swing & hit away from the shift, which has plagued him most of the year.

No excuses for Swisher. If a guy like Gardner can get bat to ball & get a hit, not sure why Swisher needs to try & swing for the fences. No reason to be able to hit during the season & shut down in the post.

Cashman has things to do this winter. Not a ton of things (Pena, Long and Rothschild will be busier). Find another starter, decide on Garcia or Colon, rework part of the bullpen if they let Ayala go, find a second lefty and replacements for Jones and Chavez if they leave. Look for the rookie in the rotation to be a fight, or move Noesi there and put a rookie into Noesi’s spot. If Laird isn’t traded, I’d consider giving him a shot to replace Chavez. Makes the Yanks even more of a heavily right handed team, though, which is one reason fixing Teixeira’s and Swisher’s swings are so important.

God, I never spent much time hating Randy Levine – it’s just not my style to hate – but he sounds like spoiled child……I can’t STAND this attitude:

“We are the Yankees,” Levine told ESPNNewYork.com Friday as he and the franchise coped with being eliminated at home in Game 5 of the ALDS by the Detroit Tigers. “That is the way The Boss set it up. When you don’t win the World Series, it is a bitter disappointment and not a successful year.”

***Yeah, it was disappointing, but to say it wasn’t a good year is silly. I know, George would have felt the same way, but still when you see the quotes on paper, they just look dumb.

Lock Down, I can’t get behind spending gobs of $$$ on a totally unproven pitcher (I want to see him do it in the big leagues first) and expecting him to be a savior.

  57. Jeremy October 7th, 2011 at 7:48 pm

They did a documentary on baseball players and steroids a few years ago that aired on ESPN I believe and this relief pitcher who played for a number of teams said that PED’s helped him gain more velocity on his fastball and because of that he was able to get better contracts from teams and it trasformed his career. He eventually stopped because it was effecting his health but the point is that steroids give athletes an advantage period !

I guess it’s just a case of what have you done for me lately.

i don’t see the yankees doing a whole lot to build a team for the playoffs.

i see a team built to get to the playoffs.

for example, they may have lost a few more games in the regular season had let montero catch twenty more games over the past two months, but when martin was obviously having really bad at bats , montero could have pinch hit for martin and then caught the rest of the game. this move wasn’t an option because the yankees didn’t cacth montero enough.

alex was scuffling all of september. the yankees really should have thought about getting him out of the middle of the order. this should have done to build a team for the first playoff . nothing was done except pencil alex in there to continue the bad at bats he’d been having for two months.

he should have been dropped in the order or chavez or nunez should have played some of the games. alex really did not belong in the middle of the order.

the yankees just don’t strategize real well to win in the post season. they just run tired old cliche line ups out there that are not based on reality.

  69. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 7th, 2011 at 7:57 pm

Geeze Louise. If KRod loses this guy and Roenecke (sp?) doesn’t take him out he deserves to lose this game.

  70. mick October 7th, 2011 at 7:57 pm

the yankees just don’t strategize real well to win in the post season. they just run tired old cliche line ups out there that are not based on reality.
    ===============================
this is where leyland showed girardi how it’s done….the problem is the team as assembled leaves no room for creativity….as it is with an all star team.

  71. tomingeorgia October 7th, 2011 at 7:59 pm

    trisha,
I’m watching too. Looks a lot like last night’s game to me.

  72. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 7th, 2011 at 8:00 pm

tom, yeah it does, now that you mention it.

    :(

  73. GreenBeret7 October 7th, 2011 at 8:01 pm

Trisha, I love baseball of any sort. I especially liked Kennedy, because he reminded me of pitchers like Ford, Billy Pierce, Bobby shantz. Not big and imposing, without the big fastball. Like any normal guy on the street could be him, except they can’t.

  74. tomingeorgia October 7th, 2011 at 8:02 pm

Lots of opportunities for Arizona, nothing to show for it.

  75. m October 7th, 2011 at 8:02 pm

These ball players are pretty dumb for taking stuff that won’t help them.

Look at all the MVP’s of the last 10-15 years. A good number of them (some are repeat winners) are linked to steroids.

I don’t know how people can argue that it doesn’t work. And how people can say that they don’t hurt your body.

  76. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 7th, 2011 at 8:03 pm

The one I really want to see lose is the Phils. I don’t know what the chances are with Halliday and HFA. But boy I want it to happen bad.

  77. tomingeorgia October 7th, 2011 at 8:04 pm

    GB7,
We’ve discussed “little guy” pitchers before. It’s heart and knowledge that propelled them.

  78. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 7th, 2011 at 8:04 pm

GB, I figured I was done with baseball for the season but I can’t stop watching it. I think it’s because I still have emotional favorites in the hunt, at least for now.

  79. GreenBeret7 October 7th, 2011 at 8:06 pm

Tom, that’s it. Maddox and glavin looked like school teachers. Murcer and Mattingly, Munson and Berra looked like a lot of things, but, ballplayers were them.

  80. mick October 7th, 2011 at 8:07 pm

kennedy does not appear as he used to with yanks….he looks imposing, totally different body language

  81. tomingeorgia October 7th, 2011 at 8:08 pm

Shantz would be a mascot, now.

  82. mick October 7th, 2011 at 8:09 pm

these crowds are so different than yankee crowds, hungry.

  83. Pat M. October 7th, 2011 at 8:10 pm

GB….Munson & Berra resembled bricklayers or leg breakers……Tin Cup, you think the Yanks launch Cervelli and just go with Martin and Montero …Use Montero behind the plate when Alex DH’s ????

  86. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 7th, 2011 at 8:10 pm

Lots of energy in Milwaukee. Not so much that you could hear at the Stadium last night. As “cool” as I guess those sports bars are in the Stadium, they really do detract from the joy of the crowd all being there are one. When I went to the first game at the new Stadium, I had to go through a certain glassed-in room to get to my seat. Well that room was full of Yankee fans eating and/or drinking. I was so excited to get to my seat that I didn’t spend any time there. During the game I got up to go to the lady’s room and looked up at that room, and it was still packed. Then there’s the Mohegan Sun sports bar. I don’t think you buy tickets to those venues. I know you don’t to those glassed-in rooms. They’ve turned the Stadium into a glorified ESPN Zone.

  87. m October 7th, 2011 at 8:11 pm

I’m rooting for the D-backs here. And then the Cardinals (who I loathe). I will watch, but not as much if it’s Brewers/Phillies/Rangers/Tigers.

There’s not a single team in that bunch I have even a positive feeling for.

  88. tomingeorgia October 7th, 2011 at 8:11 pm

    Pat M.,
Berra would be considered “too small”, too.

  89. GreenBeret7 October 7th, 2011 at 8:11 pm

Shantz would be a mascot, now.

    ————————————————————————————————————————-

He wasn’t even big enough to be the batboy. Few people remember some of these guys, like Freddie Patek or way back, Albie Pearson. All of 5′foot 3 inches of center field….and a very good one.

  90. mick October 7th, 2011 at 8:12 pm

    nice analogy pat.
that crowd went dead after the back to back 1st.

  91. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 7th, 2011 at 8:13 pm

  93. m October 7th, 2011 at 8:13 pm

Milwaukee is loud because it’s a semi-closed park. The seats are packed. So either NY’ers are thinner than Milwaukeeites or these seats are smaller or more tightly packed.

    What a rocket by Parra.

Oh, these teams with their animal gestures from 2B.

I definitely think so, especially because the Phils were named the world series spouse to the Sux. Add to it that in the middle of September, St. Louis wasn’t even a thought for the wild card, it would be the best story in the world.

  122. Jeremy October 7th, 2011 at 8:30 pm

I said the same thing. How come the Yankees didn’t try the suicide squeeze with the bases loaded expecially when the middle of the lineup couldn’t hit a paperbag.

Like I said earlier don’t expect any outside the box thinking with Girardi. It’s sad because I thought he would be the type of manager who would be aggressive and think outside the box.

  142. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 7th, 2011 at 8:42 pm

Joba, I think it’s crazy to blame CC for something that’s not his fault. Neither Pettitte nor Mussina did well on irregular rest. CC was asked to do it for the entire length of the 6-man rotation experiment. He came out like blazes in the rain game and then had to start again on three days rest. Then he came out again with only two days in between.

  143. yankeefeminista October 7th, 2011 at 8:42 pm

  145. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 7th, 2011 at 8:44 pm

Joba, I think you need to mix your frustration with understanding, especially with respect to CC.

  146. GreenBeret7 October 7th, 2011 at 8:45 pm

Pat, for whatever reason, I had great luck. I broke an ankle once, but, ever a knee or back injury…the most commin injuries are fractured backs and torn up knees. Other than the ankle, a lot of split chins when the wind would get under the helmet and the chin strap would split my face open.

  147. m October 7th, 2011 at 8:47 pm

  149. GreenBeret7 October 7th, 2011 at 8:47 pm

Pat, I think just to scare us, they made all of our training jumps at night. At least it seemed that way. Other combat jumps were done in day and night time. The worst is jumping during monsoon weather.

  150. m October 7th, 2011 at 8:48 pm

Why are the D-backs not putting the runner on 1B for a double play?

  151. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 7th, 2011 at 8:49 pm

Kind of how I feel about Arizona. That’s the team that played New York New York when they beat the Yankees in the world series. It’s the DBacks, not the Kennedys.

we could raise a lot of money for charity.

$500 TO PUSH GB7 OUT OF PLANE

  156. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 7th, 2011 at 8:51 pm

I was going to say that Nyjer Morgan is fast as lightning so he’s the last person you’d want to put on base, plus Fielder and Braun are far from ground ball hitters.

  157. Yanks78 October 7th, 2011 at 8:52 pm

  160. tomingeorgia October 7th, 2011 at 8:53 pm

  161. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 7th, 2011 at 8:54 pm

Yanks 78, it’s still not over. I still see Hughes becoming an ace, and I still see big things for Joba.

It took Kennedy going out west to make him an ace.

In particular? I don’t like their little thing when they all fall down on Fielder’s walkoffs. I know it’s silly, but they’re overhyped imo. If it comes down to them and the Phillies, I might have to flip a coin. lol. If it’s the Phillies, I’ll just have to cheer for the Victorinos. haha.

  165. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 7th, 2011 at 8:56 pm

Lock, may they keep up the good work! 32 pitches for Doc? Yeow.

Hopefully though it’s a function of him not being so great tonight and NOT poor umpiring. I don’t want to see ANY team go down behind lousy umpiring – well okay, maybe the Sux.

    But nobody else!

  166. LockDown October 7th, 2011 at 8:59 pm

Okay, that is a stupid thing to do (all falling down) I agree. I got to love the Brew Crew over the past few seasons when I had a number of their players on my fantasy team. I know that probably sounds stupid, too!

And you come by your rooting for Victorino honestly. :)

Can you imagine, though, if the vaunted Phils are brought down at home? (I know, not something to be crowing about at this point). But the Phils were annointed, just the way the Suxers were. We sure weren’t! People laughed at our “patch work” rotation.

  169. Purenyyankee October 7th, 2011 at 9:00 pm

  172. GreenBeret7 October 7th, 2011 at 9:01 pm

Randy, the cost runs anywhere from $200-$300 a jump. That’s if you have your own equipment. Buying your own equipment could run $3000-$4000 and higher, depending on what kind of jumping you do. Renting the equipment jacks the cost even more. Risky to trusy used equipment. Walk away if they don’t give you a refund for faulty equipment. (just kidding)

    How Is That Possible ?

Is that “1″ on the scoreboard an optical illusion ?

    Some please answer me.

The Brewers are alright. Remember the Yanks beating them in the playoffs in 81.

Carpenter is a big game pitcher. I always like the guy and wished that he pitched for the yankees.

And like I said the Cardinal hitters don’t fear any pitcher. Too bad some of our high priced offensive guys are not like that.

Anyone know how long Braun is tied up for?

  179. GreenBeret7 October 7th, 2011 at 9:05 pm

Tom, never liked low level jumps or jumping out of helicopters into water from 20-30 feet. Hated that stuff. Not a coward, but, I’m not stupid either.

  180. GreenBeret7 October 7th, 2011 at 9:10 pm

I think Braun is tied up for the next week to 10 days. I believe he’s not married, Trisha, so, you’re on your own.

What would our rotation have been w/out Nova and CC in game 3?
    Freddy-AJ-CC-Colon-Freddy-AJ -CC?
    That could have hurt.

Sometimes Yankee Numerology hurts…. I just ordered a meal at Sol Food, the excellent Puerto Rican joint in San Rafael. You pay at the counter and they give you a number.

    I got #27.

And that’s what we’re stuck on for one more year.

    27.

  183. Red Robin October 7th, 2011 at 9:12 pm

I don’t care what happens the rest of the playoffs.

I just want to see Ainge, Santiago, and Don Kelly get hurt … and hurt badly.

  184. GreenBeret7 October 7th, 2011 at 9:13 pm

That catch by Punto was better than the one he didn’t make in 2009.

  185. tomingeorgia October 7th, 2011 at 9:14 pm

    GB7,
Most of my time was spent wandering around in the woods, riding Hueys and Caribous, never made a drop in anger. What was the dz at Bragg that was the narrowest? Normandy? Anyway, $55.00 per month deserved a jump every so often.

  186. mick October 7th, 2011 at 9:14 pm

We could have easily beeen swept vs Texas.
That would have been worse than what happened.

  187. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 7th, 2011 at 9:16 pm

    Nick –

Okay, we’ll take it for another year. I think you need to be thinking about your carton of Sports Bars too. When you pick the flavors, let me know.

  188. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 7th, 2011 at 9:18 pm

mick, I’d say it looks like Nova would have been out. Girardi would likely have put Colon back in and maybe even Hughes, unless he isn’t stretched out enough. And CC definitely wouldn’t have opened. So yes, maybe it happened for the best based on what may have ended up happening.

  189. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 7th, 2011 at 9:21 pm

Well I’m going out for a while. I’ll probably be back before this game is over so I’ll check to see if there’s still activity here.

    Onward and upward gang.

  190. GreenBeret7 October 7th, 2011 at 9:24 pm

Tom, retaining jump status required a jump every 90 days unless deployed, provided you were jump qualified. are you talking about Sicily DZ? About 400 or so meters, I think. Hated that sandy thing. Amazing that there aren’t more broken legs there. Between the sand and those damned red cokcaded woodpeckers…miserable

  191. Nick in SF October 7th, 2011 at 9:29 pm

    I’ll let you know, Trisha.

I would much rather have made it out of the ALDS even if getting swept by Texas would be our reward.

You get swept, you really know you were beat. You don’t wonder much about this play or that play.

But the Tigers… we blew them out twice and could have won any of the three squeakers. Tougher to accept. Tougher to forget.

Oh well. Nothing to do but wait ’tilto next year and be happy we root for a team that’s going to compete at a very high level and give us more than our share of great moments.

Now I’m going to drive north, far north, deep into the night.

I’ll be thinking about the Ritter Sports to come and a championship that was not to be.

  192. jmv October 7th, 2011 at 9:33 pm

It`s been a tough day to digest. BUt Trisha just made it funnier with that video, LOL

The whole mind set here has to change…

This guy is making $32 mil a year and “giving the best effort he could” is just NOT acceptable.

There is just a flawed system in the MLB and sports in general. In real life, if workers do not perform what is expected of them, they are fired. In sports, a player can get paid and then contribute nowhere close to the production needed to justify the contract.

If you ask me… the Yankees should have tried to void Arod’s deal after the whole steroids crap. The terms of his contract are not only paying for on field performance, but also off field performance, and that whole deal negated his value significantly, which I believe to be just reason to void a players contract.

Sure, the Yankees won a WS in 2009 with Arod, but that is the EXPECTATION when your payroll is as ridiculous as the Yankees.

AFraud deserves to be exiled from the game of baseball, not just given another break.
