Joe Girardi’s press conference

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Oct 11, 2011 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Doubt we’ll have any have huge news coming out of Joe Girardi’s end-of-the-season press conference, but just in case, I’ll update this post as we go along. Joe’s scheduled to start at noon.

By the way, you can watch live on YES. The network is carrying the entire press conference.

On the division series: “We’re a hit, maybe a couple of sac flies away from still playing.”

On CC Sabathia: “I don’t want to imagine what it will be like without him.”

On the rotation going forward: “That’s the one thing we’re going to have to address.”

On Alex Rodriguez’s health: “His miniscus tear was kind of a freak thing.” … Girardi expressed no lingering health concerns about Rodriguez.

On A.J. Burnett: “He’s a work in progress. He’s having to change as he gets older.”

On Jorge Posada: “I could tell how difficult that last day was with him.” … Girardi said he can’t say whether Posada will be back.

On Phil Hughes: “We consider him a starter, but he’s got to get back to the form he had in 2010.”

On Sabathia’s weight: “He gained a few
pounds, but I don’t think it affected him.”

On Rodriguez’s playing time: Girardi said he still expects Rodriguez to be the everyday third baseman, with only occasional DH days. Doesn’t sound like he plans additional DH days because of this year’s injuries.

On Derek Jeter: “We expect him to have another good year and be productive for us.”

Make CC’s extension years have a performance bonus based on 30 starts, much like Garcia had.

    Garcia’s contract:

    Freddy Garcia rhp
    1 year/$1.5M (2011)

signed by NY Yankees as a free agent 2/2/11 (minor-league contract)
$3.6M in performance bonuses based on starts (to 30 GS)

  2. Chambliss October 11th, 2011 at 11:57 am

I agree with Trader. As great as CC is, he could breakdown give his size and his workload to date.

  3. Melkmanisinhotlanta October 11th, 2011 at 11:59 am

Perhaps Cashman can insert a BMI clause into the contract? If he ends the season with a BMI of 30 he gets a million bonus, a BMI of 29 1.5 million etc?

  4. Melkmanisinhotlanta October 11th, 2011 at 12:00 pm

CC really needs to get on the P90X bandwagon imo.

  5. blake October 11th, 2011 at 12:02 pm

If CC intends to opt out then you’re going to have to tack kn at least 1 guaranteed year…..hopefully 1 guaranteed additional year and then a fair vesting option will do it.

  6. Yankee Trader October 11th, 2011 at 12:04 pm

In reality, the Yankees will give the big man 3 more years to age 39 at a minimum of 25M/year and add that to the cost of doing business. Now the following remaining $’s on existing long term contracts:

    A-Rod 143M
    Tex 112M
    CC 92M + 75M for 3 more yrs.

    Buyer beware!!

  7. heyman_sux October 11th, 2011 at 12:06 pm

blake – i think realistically that’s what the yankees are hoping for. but if i’m CC, i realize i have all the leverage and probably push for at LEAST 2 guaranteed years, the third year maybe being a vesting option

  8. Erin October 11th, 2011 at 12:06 pm

On CC Sabathia: ?I don?t want to imagine what it will be like without him.?

    ************************

    Neither do I, Joe ;)

  9. blake October 11th, 2011 at 12:07 pm

    Trader,

I don’t think they’ll have to go there unless he gets to free agency and then another team really pushes it there.

I think a new 5/125 deal with a vesting option should do it……that’s Lee’s deal more or less . I think he will be a good pitcher until he’s 37 so im cool with it.

  10. Yankee Trader October 11th, 2011 at 12:11 pm

    Melkman-

You’re still considered overweight with a BMI from 25 to 29.9. Same medical conditions come into play. Now it’s true that you can have a BMI of 25 and not be overweight if it’s all muscle.

    BMI calculator:

  11. bruceb October 11th, 2011 at 12:13 pm

Watching Albert the Great hit last night I couldn’t help but compare it with A-Rod’s post-season performances (with the ONE exception of 2009). If A-Rod is worth $27.5 million a year, then what value do you place on Pujols? Boy, are we getting stiffed by that contract…and it’s only going to get worse.

  12. Yankee Trader October 11th, 2011 at 12:14 pm

    Blake-

I hope you’re right. Stay optomistic. I hope the remaining years on A-Rods new contract, after he opted out, are kind to the Yankees.

  13. blake October 11th, 2011 at 12:14 pm

    Heyman,

Yea a lot depends on how much CC wants to push…..there is the risk thought of pushing too hard and the Yanks walking away. Hopefully he has a little jared Weaver in him.

  14. Joe from Long Island October 11th, 2011 at 12:14 pm

Joe talking about Tex’ hitting problems.

  15. Melkmanisinhotlanta October 11th, 2011 at 12:14 pm

    Yankee Trader-

Lowering his BMI level from obese to overweight would be a huge accomplishment. CC is a binge eater so he needs to work on himself.

  16. Joe from Long Island October 11th, 2011 at 12:15 pm

    was 2009 that long ago?

  17. randy l. October 11th, 2011 at 12:15 pm

having an ace in your rotation is no guarantee of anything in the post season.

sabathia did little for the yankees.

verlander has done little for the tigers.

let CC walk if he wants to.

walking would be good for CC.

    it might burn some calories.

  18. blake October 11th, 2011 at 12:18 pm

CC isn’t going anywhere ……and I don’t want him to…..but if he did then the Yankees could likely sign Pujols and Wilson and not raise payroll……they will field a good and championships level team ones way or another.

  19. blake October 11th, 2011 at 12:24 pm

What if CC surprises everyone and says that he likes it in NY and has decides to not use his opt out? You never know

  20. heyman_sux October 11th, 2011 at 12:25 pm

230+ IP of quality baseball and people still don’t appreciate him. Unbelievable.

Whether you believe in the ‘ace in the playoffs’ theory or not is irrelevant. If you take him out of the equation, you better believe there will be trickle down consequences for the rotation and the bullpen

  21. Joe from Long Island October 11th, 2011 at 12:28 pm

ah, my man randy is here. How’s it going?

  22. Shame Spencer October 11th, 2011 at 12:28 pm

“…..but if he did then the Yankees could likely sign Pujols and Wilson and not raise payroll”

Well blake, when you put it that way… God I wish we had a place to put Pujols. Can he catch?!

  23. LGY October 11th, 2011 at 12:29 pm

@BloggingBombers: Girardi, on the criticism of using the same lineup in all 5 ALDS games: “I guess I could have put Gardy fourth.”

  24. Erin October 11th, 2011 at 12:30 pm

“…but if he did then the Yankees could likely sign Pujols and Wilson and not raise payroll……they will field a good and championships level team ones way or another.”

    blake-

    precisely.

the whole yankee team could walk and with 200 million freed up to spend they could put together a team that would make the post season.

personally i would not give contracts longer than three years to players..

i’d much rather pay 40 million a year in one year to a guy like pujols rather than go 7 years into the future with him.

longterm contracts are not going to go away, but the yankees singlehandedly could make change how things are done.

i think they should call CC’s bluff.

    Joel Sherman @Joelsherman1

    3UP nyp.st/raZQVc Thoughts on Beltran,Swisher,Posada. #Yankees

31 minutes ago via Twitter f

Sherman making lots of sense here

  28. Yankee Trader October 11th, 2011 at 12:33 pm

After last nights performance, the Cardinals will find a way to resign Pujols, especially if they get to the WS.

  29. blake October 11th, 2011 at 12:35 pm

If CC hits the market then I think a load of teams will show aggression …..now it may be show fir most but they will try to drive the price up. If that happens then the Yanks absolutely should draw a line in the sand…..if he wants to stay then he ‘ll stay and be fairly paid.

Randy….I would much rather pay more AAV to keep the years down.

  30. Yankee Trader October 11th, 2011 at 12:35 pm

    Blake-

    What sense did Sherman make?

  31. blake October 11th, 2011 at 12:36 pm

6/180 is fair for Pujols IMO. I would pay him 30 million a year but Im not doing it forever…….

  32. Niblick October 11th, 2011 at 12:37 pm

So the take from Binder Joe’s press conference is that all is well in Yankee land, and that no changes need to be made anywhere, with the exception of the starting rotation. Mr. Delusional.

  33. Erin October 11th, 2011 at 12:38 pm

blake-if LoHud turns into a daily lovefest for Pujols over the next couple of months, I’m holding you responsible. ;)

  34. blake October 11th, 2011 at 12:38 pm

    Trader,

About swapping Swisher for Beltran. Sites that Beltran was willing to give the Yanks a discount before and maybe he would again to return to NY and have a chance at a title

  35. blake October 11th, 2011 at 12:39 pm

    Erin,

Lol….don’t see it happening ….just making conversation ;)

  36. Erin October 11th, 2011 at 12:40 pm

blake-understood. I just had to give you a hard time. :)

  37. bruceb October 11th, 2011 at 12:41 pm

What’s the point in holding a news conference is you have absolutely no news whatsoever to impart?

  38. blake October 11th, 2011 at 12:42 pm

I think Pujols could handle RF at YS FWIW…..he’s a pretty good athlete. Matt Kemp could handle LF also the next year. :)

  39. randy l. October 11th, 2011 at 12:43 pm

    joe from long island-

i think i’m in a testy mood with the yankees being eliminated so early.

with CC opting out, they’d have the opportunity of recreating the team to a leaner one.

i’d like to see the yankees get away from the kinds of contracts teixeira, arod, and sabathia have.

it is a almost a certainty when the yankees sign these kinds of contracts, at some point the player will be stuck in the middle of the line up clogging it up or will be stuck in the rotation when they don’t deserve to be.

the yankees could keep 50 million a year in reserve and adjust as the season goes on. even with revenue sharing teams need to unload players each year in the second half.

this would work out for the yankees because they could pay a guy like lee for half a season and get him for the post season and then let him walk. do the same thing with someone else the next year.

  40. Irreverent Discourse October 11th, 2011 at 12:44 pm

Pujols was removed from the outfield because his elbow was falling apart. he’s not going back out there, especially for the Yankees…

  41. blake October 11th, 2011 at 12:46 pm

I think one thing they should avoid is giving giant contracts to players that are limited position wise….that’s where you run into problems because it really limits what you can do.

  42. tomingeorgia October 11th, 2011 at 12:46 pm

    blake,
I’m with you. I won’t look at the reality pipe until next February. Ain’t my money, anyway.

  43. Yankee Trader October 11th, 2011 at 12:46 pm

“…but if he did then the Yankees could likely sign Pujols and Wilson and not raise payroll……they will field a good and championships level team ones way or another.”
    ——————————————————————
If the payroll stays at 207M and change [COT's], and Posada, Marte, Garcia,Chavez, Jones, Ayala, Mitre, Colon are not brought back, plus the raises due the regulars, the Yankees, have approximately 15 Million to work with. That did not include arb eligible players like Chamberlain, Hughes, Gardner, Martin, Logan, ? Cervelli. Did I miss anyone.

So if CC opts out and signs elsewhere you have another 23M + the 15M= 38M to sign 2 starters, and improve the bench, and any other needs, IF, the payroll is not raised!!

    Armcouch GM’s-Can you do it?

  44. blake October 11th, 2011 at 12:47 pm

“Pujols was removed from the outfield because his elbow was falling apart. he’s not going back out there, especially for the Yankees…”

Nope…..I don’t think so either…just sayin….he played 3rd some this year…..I think he could play RF acceptably

  45. Villa Nova-Ya October 11th, 2011 at 12:50 pm

    Really?

I did not get the impression that all is well in Yankeeland.

While Girardi is mostly optimistic, and will never “trash” a player, he did say Tex needs to use the whole field; he did say that Hughes and Nova have to come to camp ready to compete for a job and the Hughes has to do the work to stay healthy; he didn’t say anything specific, but I got the general feeling that Swisher isn’t a given; the starting rotation beyond CC is a huge question mark; and they need to find another utility corner infielder.

And he deferred a lot of specifics, which of course he would for many reasons, but if you don’t think that he and (hopefully) Cashman and the rest of the people involved don’t have a lot to talk about on how they’re going to build this team next season, you were not listening to the same press conference I was.

I like what he had to say about Montero’s hitting, but if I’m Jesus, I’m working on my catching this winter as much as possible. I like that he mentioned 5 pitching prospects in the system as being part of the competition in the spring (plus Noesi). I like that he said that they will talk about lineup changes.

I didn’t like, but did not expect any different, that he said he wouldnt’ really have done anything differently in the ALDS. (And realistically, he wouldn’t have started anyone differently, it was just a matter of pinch-hitting, and no one asked him that particular question.)

  46. Melkmanisinhotlanta October 11th, 2011 at 12:52 pm

CC is a cheap skate plain and simple. He makes an income that he could easily afford a full-time chief to prepare healthy meals for him. He could write it off as a business expense to the tune of $200k a year.

  47. DaSaint007 October 11th, 2011 at 12:52 pm

Don’t have time to talk about AP coming here. It’s not happening.
If CC were to lose say 50 or 60 lbs and not be able to pitch like he was, the same folks complaining about his weight would complain even more. The reality is that he needs to stay healthy enough to pitch well, and frankly he’s a creature of routine. He needs to pitch every 5 days.

Otherwise it could be another day to eat. Sorry, couldn’t help myself.

  48. blake October 11th, 2011 at 12:55 pm

“So if CC opts out and signs elsewhere you have another 23M + the 15M= 38M to sign 2 starters, and improve the bench, and any other needs, IF, the payroll is not raised!!”

    Sign Wilson : 17m
    Trade for Danks: 8m
    Sign Beltran: 12m
    Trade Swisher: -10m
    Sign Jones: 2 million

    Fill in rest from farm.

I just cut payroll :) still rather have CC back.

  49. Yankee Trader October 11th, 2011 at 12:56 pm

    Blake-

Pujols will not be a Yankee! If the Cardinals need to trade Holliday and pay him extra to waive his full NTC, they’ll do that before letting Pujols go, especially if they get to the WS.

Now maybe you’d be willing to trade for Holliday and his conract thru 2017, giving the Cardinals inexpensive players such as Gardner and Hughes for starters as an example.

  50. blake October 11th, 2011 at 12:56 pm

“I like what he had to say about Montero’s hitting,”

    What did he say?

  51. Melkmanisinhotlanta October 11th, 2011 at 12:58 pm

Ok prediction time: CC makes the move to Philly. He wants to win now and PHilly is an easy move for him from NJ.

  52. Erin October 11th, 2011 at 12:59 pm

Villa Nova-since I couldn’t watch, I’m just curious as to what was said that gave you the impression that Swish may be on his way out.

  53. Melkmanisinhotlanta October 11th, 2011 at 12:59 pm

Prediction #2: Hughes will be traded by the July deadline. His time has expired. Showing up to camp out of shape sealed the deal imo.

  54. J. Alfred Prufrock October 11th, 2011 at 1:03 pm

Funny how C wasn’t “fat” in 2009, he was just “big” for us….It’s just a question now of how many years and how much $$$$.

Villa, thanks for the recap, I missed most of it. Sorry I didn’t hear the exact language on Montero… I did hear him use a telling adjective, though, when the general discussion was about quality ABs, but the lead-in was Swisher, & clearly whom he meant: “if guys are ‘over-anxious’…”. He’s also right about Swisher being under rated as a defender in right…

  55. Villa Nova-Ya October 11th, 2011 at 1:03 pm

    Erin -

He didn’t say anything specific. He said it was important how guys approach their at-bats in the post season. I don’t think necessarily Swisher will be gone, but I think he will be a subject of discussion. I had assumed he’d be back without question, so it was more that I think there’s some question.

Between all the talk about luck being a factor and trying not to “dis” any of his players, it’s hard to get a crystal clear read.

  56. Villa Nova-Ya October 11th, 2011 at 1:04 pm

Girardi said he was very pleased with Montero’s hitting all of September and in his two at-bats in the post-season.

  57. Erin October 11th, 2011 at 1:05 pm

    Villa Nova-thank you!

    Very interesting.

  58. Villa Nova-Ya October 11th, 2011 at 1:05 pm

Also, he really likes Martin as the catcher. (Surprise, surprise.)

  59. Yankee Trader October 11th, 2011 at 1:05 pm

    Villa-

Thanks for your take on the Girardi interview.

    Order of business:
    1. Cashman re-signs, not resigns
    2. Yankees make extension offer to CC before he can opt out, 3 days after WS ends
    3. Decision will be made, if there’s a deadline, on whether to pick up Swisher’s club option. Most likely they will
    4. Rest of the decisions will take time on finding another starter thru trade or FA.
    5. Boras clients like Beltran are not usually signed until late December or later.

  60. pat October 11th, 2011 at 1:08 pm

Using just the BMI, many Yankees are overweight or obese. It’s a guide not gospel.

  61. DaSaint007 October 11th, 2011 at 1:09 pm

Swish will be back. As the rest of the starting OF. Jones is iffy and could be replaced – but not by Golson or Dickerson. Not happening. Neither has any power. Good defensively and good speed, but no power.

IMO, I think the big surprise will be Soriano agreeing to a trade so he can be a closer somewhere. Could net the Yanks some good young positional talent and/or a lefty for the pen.

  62. randy l. October 11th, 2011 at 1:10 pm

the opt out thing changes things with CC.

if he really does it, he needs to go.

just like when alex did it, they should have let him go when they had the chance.

they’re paying the price now paying three times what alex’s production is worth.

you can’t look at just the short term with over the top long term contracts.

it is inevitable that they will drag the yankees down as fans each year have some yankee that they count the years left on that yankee’s bloated contract.

    let cc walk.

  63. blake October 11th, 2011 at 1:10 pm

“Girardi said he was very pleased with Montero’s hitting all of September and in his two at-bats in the post-season.”

So much so that he made him a nonfactor in the division series.

  64. J. Alfred Prufrock October 11th, 2011 at 1:10 pm

Swisher doesn’t have a great arm, but he goes really well to the RCF gap and also to the line. He made an adjustment long ago & can be trusted going back to the wall… he doesn’t come in great, good thing Robbie’s there to backpedal of some of the softer stuff hit out there. If Swish had a really good arm, the coming in wouldn’t matter as much…over all, he’s fine defensively. If they keep him & don’t go after anyone, Nunez is always an option.

  65. Captain Clutch October 11th, 2011 at 1:13 pm

If CC hits free agency I think the Yanks biggest competition will be the Rangers. Who knows where he is willing to move his family but I think it’s obvious that he is opting out if the Yanks don’t extend him. Cashman has to call his agent this week and see what it will take to get a deal done. I don’t think CC will ask for the moon and stars since he is really happy here but Cashman has to get the ball rolling so this doesn’t turn into a mess and they lose him.

  66. J. Alfred Prufrock October 11th, 2011 at 1:14 pm

Right, I really don’t want to hear superlatives out of Girardi’s mouth on Montero’s bat :( , not right now, any way…

  67. blake October 11th, 2011 at 1:14 pm

There’s nothing good about the Yankees going down, except that it makes the soundbite attention span fan who obviously hates the players the minute they don’t come up rings unhappy….

ok – here’s a question, even tho it’s never going to happen b/c of ticket prices/yes network/market, are you willing, as a fan, to let these high price FA’s go and put a more cost effective product on the field (knowing full well that the results are not guaranteed)?

    CC re-ups. #1 starter remains.
Nova returns healthy. #3 starter solidified.
AJ isn’t going anywhere. He’s the #4 starter.
Garcia gets offered a 1 year deal – and accepts. # 5 starter solidified.
Hughes gets the opportunity in ST to prove he’s a #2 starter. Or a #5 starter. Or a reliever.

Or if the Yankees sign a true #2 starter…he could be traded. But no one ever wants to trade arms. Never.

CC is a cheap skate plain and simple. He makes an income that he could easily afford a full-time chief to prepare healthy meals for him. He could write it off as a business expense to the tune of $200k a year.

This doesn’t even make sense. How do you know that he doesn’t already have his own chef?

It’s a lot easier to watch your diet during the offseason than it is during the regular season. These guys are on the road for half the year and probably eat in restaurants almost nightly.

The more often you eat out, the harder it is to eat healthy.

Nick Swisher was commenting about this very issue a couple of weeks back.
