Going, going, gone?

Yesterday, the Yankees made their first three 40-man roster cuts, losing Aaron Laffey to a waiver claim and letting Raul Valdes and Scott Proctor choose free agency before being outrighted.

Those surely won’t be the only casualties.

As it stands, the 40-man roster is at 37 players, but that’s not counting the seven guys on the 60-day disabled list. There’s no hiding someone on the 60-day in the offseason, which means the Yankees have to trim from 44. There are plenty of players who could go.

On the 60-day disabled list
Joba Chamberlain, Pedro Feliciano, Damaso Marte, Sergio Mitre, Reegie Corona, Colin Curtis, Justin Maxwell

Of these seven, Chamberlain is the only one who absolutely must stay. Marte is headed for free agency, so he’s an easy cut. Same for Mitre, who’s already been through his three arbitration years and doesn’t have an obvious role to play next season. Feliciano probably stays just in case he’s able to pitch next year. The Yankees didn’t dump Marte when he was hurt, hard to imagine they’ll dump Feliciano.

Corona and Curtis each missed all of 2010 with injuries, so they could probably slip through waivers (Corona easier than Curtis). If their claimed, the Yankees have similar players in the system. Maxwell is a more difficult call because he’s coming off a good Triple-A season that was cut short. The Yankees could remove him if they need the roster space, but there’s some risk of a claim.

Heading for free agency
Bartolo Colon, Freddy Garcia, Eric Chavez, Andruw Jones, Jorge Posada

The Yankees are likely to need a veteran corner infielder and a right-handed outfielder, so Chavez and Jones aren’t completely out of the question for 2012. There’s at least one report that Chavez is leaning toward retirement, but Jones will surely want to play again, and he did his job well this season. Everyone knows the Posada situation.

Colon and Garcia could provide rotation depth, but at what cost? Garcia’s season almost certainly earned him a guaranteed contract somewhere, and if the Yankees are aggressive in finding potential starters, Garcia might find a better opportunity elsewhere. Colon would be a kind of wild card. It’s hard to get the lightning back in the bottle.

Could go if necessary
Luis Ayala, Kevin Whelan, Greg Golson, Melky Mesa

Ayala pitched well enough to stay, but the Yankees might not want to guarantee him a roster spot, especially if they get into a roster crunch. I guess Cory Wade could also fit in this group, but he was good enough — and trusted in big enough situations — to suggest the Yankees like what they’ve seen. To me, bringing Wade back is an easy call, especially at the cost. It also seems like the Yankees plan to bring back Russell Martin, so I didn’t list him. Same for Nick Swisher and his 2012 club option.

Guys like Whelan, Golson and Mesa haven’t necessarily done anything to lose their spots, but Golson should be out of options next year, Whelan wasn’t given a September call-up and Mesa is coming off a bad year in Double-A. The Yankees relative lack of upper-level outfielders might keep Mesa’s spot safe — Whelan’s numbers and Golson’s familiarity might do the same — but these spots could be opened without creating significant problems for the Yankees.

    Posada will retire/leave.

    Exercise Marte’s buyout.

    Let Ayala go.

Golson will probably get a gig someplace if he’s out of options. He’s got a heck of an arm in RF.

I’m not an expert on the Rule 5 thing, but I imagine some players will need to be protected. But that happens soon anyway.

CC can opt out 3 days after the conclusion of the WS. Too bad he won’t be pledging his love for New York from the parade.

  11. Phranchise October 12th, 2011 at 3:50 pm

Maxwell when he returns should be able to give you anything Golson could, but with a bit more firepower in his bat. Given he was off to a very good start you stick with him there as he has always had potential. Whelan is a waste, who cares. Ayala pitched poorly at the end, but definitely was a nice middle reliever, mopup guy, much better from a consistent standpoint than Mitre.

Nice to see the players list with the DOB included. Makes you realize how young Mr Hughes was when he came up and how young he remains compared to other guys in the organization playing in their first or second season (or still in the minors, like Brackman, who is older than Hughes)l

  19. Teary Francona October 12th, 2011 at 4:06 pm

Well, you should have an issue with the Yankees being hated, when the Yankees cant get any fair and good-faith deals from other general managers because we are hated.

  20. austinmac October 12th, 2011 at 4:08 pm

Their is a reason Maxwell is still in the minors, and that is, he strikes out way too much. Don’t expect a 27 year old to make dramatic improvements.

Better than Golson? Perhaps, but not good enough, IMO.

    Lockdown -

I just wanted to respond to your 10:34 am post. I did misunderstand your original point.

It’s certainly possible for players to get resentful or bothered if they sensed their manager wasn’t able to make a decision or take a stand.

I felt the 6-man rotation was an organizational decision, but I guess all anyone can do is hope that if there are negative feelings that they are fleeting or at least dealt with.

I was just throwing out ideas and really have no idea what anyone is thinking. I’ll leave that to “P”.

But luckily they are not the red sox. I too hope that “IF” anyone has negative feelings toward Girardi then it’s just a passing thing. You’re never going to have people who 100% agree with each other, but they definitely work well together as a team.

One of the things I loved from this season, is how all the guys really seemed to like & support their team mates. No matter how bad things got for various players throughout different parts of the season, they stood together, had faith in each other & said the right things.

  37. m October 12th, 2011 at 4:33 pm

    ———-

That is a good season. But I would expect a significant dive in his production next season. I just don’t see him doing it two years in a row.

Truth be told, I never was a fan of Melky just like some people just aren’t fans of Gardner.

  42. m October 12th, 2011 at 4:38 pm

No manager is universally loved in the clubhouse.

Girardi has had to overcome some obstacles in his short tenure. Replacing a Yankee icon. Managing mega stars. Managing players he played with.

And yet he’s done it. There will always be sour grapes. People with agendas. And people who will spin things.

I’m not saying he’s perfect. I’m not saying Cash is perfect. As usual, I only wish people would offer solutions instead of complaints. Realistic solutions, not fantasy.

  43. m October 12th, 2011 at 4:39 pm

lol, Big Papi offered no comment on all the rumors swirling around Boston now. He doesn’t want the stink from the big pile of p00 on him.

  44. bg90027 October 12th, 2011 at 4:40 pm

I think you need spots for 3 of those guys on the 60 day: Joba, Feliciano and Curtis. Marte will be bought out. Mitre will be a free agent. Maxwell is out of options as are Golson and Dickerson. I can’t imagine that they’d keep all three on the 40 man. Maxwell or Golson would likely be DFA’ed. I don’t think Corona is important to keep unless they like him more than Ramiro Pena.

I think Phelps, Adams and possibly DJ Mitchell also need spots to be protected from the Rule V draft though so they need three more spots.

Posada is not coming back and he doesn’t need to be replaced like Jones or Chavez might so that’s one spot. The free agents could temporarily provide spots but they will need spots for their replacements assuming they are from outside the organization (which is likely). So I’d guess 2 of Ayala, Whelan, Mesa and Golson/Maxwell (whichever is still remaining) would eventually lose their spots. I guess you could throw Feliciano in that mix too but I’m guessing that he’ll be kept like Marte was. In addition to the small possibility that he could contribute, there’s probably insurance reasons to keep him around and they’d get his spot again once the season starts and he goes back on the 60 day. There’s also the possibility that they choose not to protect DJ Mitchell.

  45. Yank 97 October 12th, 2011 at 4:44 pm

No Ayala, Mitre, Marte, and Feliciano (he had shoulder surgery, just ditch him)

Put Corona and Curtis on waivers.

Re-sign Garcia. Look into Jones if he doesnt get a full time spot anywhere else. Let Posada retire unless you’re sitting at 24 men and theres no trades opens or free agents, then bring him back for a hurrah.

Keep Whelan on the 40 man and use him in Ayala’s spot. Mesa has to stay on for 1 more year atleast to see where he is at, he has lots of tools. Golson will be the 4th OFer or cut.

Although Yankee fans are obviously giddy over what’s happening in Boston, we need to remind ourselves that the Yanks overcame somewhat similar clubhouse “turmoil” rather quickly after Girardi replaced Torre and finished the 2008 season without a postseason appearance.

    Just saying.

Let’s hope they are unable to turn it around like the Yanks did.

Granderson hating everyone from his little corner.

Posada’s wife calling out Girardi on Twitter.

  64. Yank 97 October 12th, 2011 at 5:10 pm

Francona is enormously popular just like Torre was. The reaction towards the Sox and sympathy towards Francona is not surprising.

Look at how the media portrayed us for what happened to Torre. His book also should have received much more criticism than it did from the media.

This Boston news surely is noticed by players who might consider them as a free agent. It sounds like an unhappy place to play baseball. Even ESPN is letting the organization have it.

  66. Tom in N.J. October 12th, 2011 at 5:17 pm

The implication that Francona may have been abusing pain medication is beyond the pale.

  68. Jerzz October 12th, 2011 at 5:22 pm

It would be fitting if they signed Reyes. Considering he was on the other highly publicized dysfunctional team/clubhouse all those years. The 07-09 Mets.

That team was a disaster though. Wagner/Lo Duca were loudmouths. There was a divide between the Latin players and everyone else. Delgado was a bad influence. They stopped playing hard for Willy. Wright was killed for not being a leader. Benerzard was undermining the manager and coaches. Ricky Henderson was playing cards with guys in the clubhouse instead of preparing, Reyes and other guys were showing up opponents, etc.

Ah. What a fun time that was to watch that.

    # Jerkface October 12th, 2011 at 4:57 pm

The 08 yankees didnt lose their GM and have all their players snaked to the press. This is like the 09 Yankees having a collapse and everyone dying.

    ———

No, it’s not an exact parallel by any means, but there was a lot more drama surrounding the team in those couple of years (the end of 2007 to the beginning of 2009) than we were used to seeing.

That was all before the big trio signed.

  70. Teary Francona October 12th, 2011 at 5:25 pm

The pain medication thing, the marital woes, and his kids serving in a war are all below the belt!

LOL blake. Love it! Senator Mitchell, the former Vice President of Red Sox operations!! Seen at Fenway Park during the Mitchell investigation with his grandkids getting autographs from Manny and Papi!

  71. Betsy October 12th, 2011 at 5:25 pm

Wow, this stuff with the Sox……….I just heard about it on Kay’s show. I knew about the drinking in the clubhouse, but other starters hanging out eating chicken and playing videogames when they’are not starting? This jibes with reports that the Sox SP don’t interact with the other players…..holy dysfunction.

Where was Pedroia in all this? Jeter’s received criticism for not being a more active leader – why not Pedroia (who IS a good guy).

Some Sox fan e-mailed Kay and suggested that if the Cubs want to s/w Theo, they ought to take on Lackey’s contract. That’s actually a great idea.

  72. blake October 12th, 2011 at 5:28 pm

Kudos to Edges for calling the Sox out on their nonsense.

  73. upstate kate October 12th, 2011 at 5:29 pm

“former Vice President of Red Sox operations!! Seen at Fenway Park during the Mitchell investigation with his grandkids getting autographs”

What a joke that was……how many tax dollars did that witch hunt cost I wonder

  75. blake October 12th, 2011 at 5:32 pm

Pedroria doesn’t have 5 rings to flash at players like Jeter does……that kind of cache doesn’t just happen because you’re gritty and dive around all game.

I wish the Sox would sign Omar Minya and Jose Reyes

  76. Betsy October 12th, 2011 at 5:34 pm

Can the media now stop with the fiction that the Sox are above it all?

Blake, I’m not comparing them in that sense, but Pedroia is supposed to be a leader on that team – some player had to step up and no one did. That speaks volumes

  77. Wave Your Hat October 12th, 2011 at 5:35 pm

Just remember that the Sox have plenty of available cash to fix their problems, plus tradeable players. I wish we could write them of for 2012, but I think that’s premature.

  78. Betsy October 12th, 2011 at 5:35 pm

Ortiz is slime – wasn’t it Francona that had his back the previous year? The players jobs are to play – NOT to manage or to GM. I guess he got too big for his britches

  79. Teary Francona October 12th, 2011 at 5:35 pm

That’s a great idea, if you’re a lunatic. The Cubs cant take Lackey’s contract, it would be another disastrous move for a disastrous organization. They want to move forwards, not backwards

  80. Teary Francona October 12th, 2011 at 5:36 pm

Ortiz was too big for his britches when he suited up for the Red Sox in 2003, coming off a name change from David Arias to David Ortiz, and started injecting

  81. Betsy October 12th, 2011 at 5:37 pm

Kate, I’m not saying Pedroia had to be a miracle worker, but leadership happens in bad times, not just good times. It’s easy to be a leader when things are going well.

  82. Chambliss October 12th, 2011 at 5:37 pm

    How sweet it is…

The greatest team ever assembled…failed to make the playoffs.

    Theo the boy wonder…gone.

Tito, the greatest Sox manager of all time,…gone.

Management throwing players and the manager under the bus in an article on the front page (not the front page of the Sports-the front page of the entire paper) of the Boston Globe…priceless.

I wonder when ESPN will show the special…The Fenway Park Zoo?

  83. blake October 12th, 2011 at 5:37 pm

    Betsy,

I agree…..it does speak volumes to the amount of clout that Pedroria likely has in that clubhouse. He should be the leader and he likely does lead by example but he has a different personality than Jete does…..

  84. LGY October 12th, 2011 at 5:38 pm

The Edes article was spot on but who does he think was writing these articles smearing all these people on the way out of the organization.

The media, including Edes himself, have been willing participants in this nonsense for years. They are just upset now because Tito is a “nice” guy.

Edes didn’t shed any tears when he was busy taking shots at Manny. The level of hypocrisy is nauseating.

  85. DaveD October 12th, 2011 at 5:40 pm

To be fair, no one stopped Sheffield when he was shooting his mouth off here either. In fact, he has said that Jeter was his best friend on the team, so he had support from the right guy.

None of the core 4 were anywhere to be found when A-Rod was going through his struggles in 06

If the players want to take over, they do for the most part. You can control and try to influence a young player, not so much veterans. They all march to their own drum.

Youk tried to confront Manny when he was dogging it in 08 and it ended up in an almost-brawl. No Cubs player has been able to control Zombrano.

Veteran-Veteran tussles are rare and usually never end well. It is up to management/the manager to take care of them by suspending/fining players. Leadership in general is overrated. Grown men making $15 million a year are not going to respond to someone else. You just have to hope their character is good enough to where you don’t have the need to ever confront them because they know how to act.

  86. blake October 12th, 2011 at 5:40 pm

  99. Jerzz October 12th, 2011 at 5:50 pm

Beckett did have the best year of his career though, beer drinking or not. I also highly doubt this dissension started this September

In all honest, them winning 1 more game sometime in September likely prevents any of this from being leaked or anyone from losing their job.

I agree with that other guy – what is a player supposed to do about another guy acting insubordinate or being a part of a “clique”? Beckett makes more money than Pedroia, is a more accomplished player, and is older.
Ortiz, I guess could have done something. I guess this was going on for a while, so some of these guys didn’t attribute their collapse to drinking beer in the clubhouse or whatever, but beause they didn’t execute between the white lines. Which is true – the Sox blew games in unbelievable ways down the stretch. They had like 7-8 of those games won. Either in the late innings or big leads or what not.

  100. m October 12th, 2011 at 5:52 pm

Good point, 1 extra game and none of this comes out.

The question is why did Becket, Lackey, and Lester ALL fail miserably in September.

I doubt the beer was the reason.

    Maybe a symptom?

  101. Betsy October 12th, 2011 at 5:52 pm

I haven’t spent any time until today on the Sox, but I do find it comical that the very same thing that the Yankees have been criticized for is happening to them – and worse because while our clubhouse wasn’t exactly a happy haven, at least you didn’t have what seems like good old country boys living the high life while their season collapsed under them.

  102. RhapsodyInBlue October 12th, 2011 at 5:52 pm

    No pun intended.

  103. Betsy October 12th, 2011 at 5:53 pm

Lackey just sucks………there’s the answer. Beckett had a great year, ,a brilliant year – until he didnt’. Lester was up and down this year…….. they need Buchholz to save their bacon, lol

I hope they are horrendous .

  105. Villa Nova-Ya October 12th, 2011 at 5:58 pm

I thought Sheffield was on his best behavior of his career while with the Yankees. It wasn’t until the end of his tenure there that he started to be “difficult.” I suspect it’s because he knew something good was coming to an end, and things weren’t going his way. But up until then, he was, at least on the surface, a “good boy.”

I enjoyed Sheffield immensely while he was with the Yankees.

And I don’t recall ANYTHING like what is surfacing with the Red Sox ever going on with the Yankees. Some discord? A little. But nothing like this.

  106. GreenBeret7 October 12th, 2011 at 6:06 pm

sheffield was gone the second he accused Torre of racism and then said that Jeter wasn’t “All the way black”.

  107. Giuseppe Franco October 12th, 2011 at 6:08 pm

  108. pat October 12th, 2011 at 6:08 pm

  112. JM October 12th, 2011 at 6:14 pm

Indeed, Edes’ article, while accurate, does smack of hypocrisy. He and all the other reporters covering the Sox have willingly spread the smears leaked by the organization for years. The Globe, in particular, is known to be Lucchino’s mouthpiece.

  113. GreenBeret7 October 12th, 2011 at 6:16 pm

    pat,

I doubt that NYYs will put any roadblocks up by trying to extract money or player talent from the Angels. As best I remember, they never have before. Plenty of teams have, though. That really makes Boston and John Henry look all that much worse. He wants money instead of talent.

  114. Teary Francona October 12th, 2011 at 6:17 pm

Phillies need a one year guy that can play 1B….anybody know of one…..maybe that rhymes with Whiffer

  126. Yogi Mantle October 12th, 2011 at 6:37 pm

Even if Howard comes back during the season, he may not be the same power hitter he was. The achille’s tendon is tough to recover from, and with as much as he uses his legs in his swing, it will be tough for him being a big hitter for the Phillies next season.

Buchholz is another injured player that might not be quite the same player he was. Being that he fractured a vertebrae from the way he throws the ball, counting on him might not be totally realistic. To prevent further injury like that he will have to change his delivery.

I see also that Masterson (currently an Indian) has had shoulder surgery.

There are some injuries that are going to rob players of some of their skills, or at least set up red flags.

Just like Alex hasn’t been quite the same since his hip injury. That very well could have caused the knee problem this year.

  134. Yogi Mantle October 12th, 2011 at 6:44 pm

GB, Buchholz pitching a no hitter was the only thing that put him on that pedestal. He is a decent pitcher, but when you saw him being sent back down and remaining in the minors it would have raised some eyebrows about his “stuff”. His no hitter and him being a Red Sox player is what elevated him in the eyes of NESPN, and they seem to dictate the sports talking points.

    ++++++++++++

Being back and being really able to play as he used to are two different things. The amount of strength he will lose over the recovery time will be huge. He won’t be able to work out that leg. The knee operation Alex had robbed him of strength, and that was minor compared to what Howard will be going through.

  136. blake October 12th, 2011 at 6:52 pm

    ————————————————————————————————————————-

You see it often enough on here about Buchholz is outstanding…Buchholz is sensational….

To me, all three so far are pretty much the same pitchers. They all have something else in common. They’re all 1st round picks who have had injuries. Not sure if that year in the bullpen helped or hurt Hughes. It cost him a lot of immings and a big innings jump. he hadn’t pitched a 100 inning season since 2007 (barely) and that was a huge jump for a 23 year old to make. Gotta think that’s one reason that he dropped of so sharply in the second half of 2010. Just wearing down.

it’s past now, but, I think he rebounds to somewhere between his first 3 months of 2010 and his last 3 months of 2011. Mid -to high 3 ERA and contimue to improve. Not sure that he’ll be a 200 strikeout pitcher a year, but certainly a solid #2 or #3 type and that pretty good. It took a few years for Sabathia to become Sabathia.

  142. GreenBeret7 October 12th, 2011 at 7:09 pm

    Joe,

If they sent Swisher to a team like Philly, I’m asking for Mayberry in return. Maybe add a David Phelps or a Corbin Joseph (who has no place to play) and a bit of offsetting money and get a minor leaguer back with Mayberry.
