Here’s the announcement from the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory…

Louisville, KY (October 12, 2011) — Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory added another superstar to its roster Wednesday as it unveiled a lifelike sculpture of Derek Jeter, team captain of the New York Yankees and future baseball Hall of Famer.

To welcome the new sculpture, the museum will celebrate “Derek Jeter Day” this Saturday, honoring the Yankee Captain. As part of the celebration, a game used Derek Jeter bat will be added to the museum’s Hold a Piece of History exhibit, allowing guests to hold a bat actually used by Jeter. Guests will also receive Jeter mini bats at the conclusion of each factory tour, while supplies last.

In addition, for “Derek Jeter Day” the museum will offer a special $2 admission in recognition of Jeter’s #2 jersey. Proceeds from Saturday’s ticket sales will be donated to Derek Jeter’s Turn 2 Foundation.

“We are thrilled to feature Derek Jeter in the museum,” said Anne Jewell, Executive Director at Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory. “Jeter is a baseball rockstar, an ambassador for the game and a huge fan favorite. We’re proud to include him in our lineup of baseball greats and we know our guests will love it. ”

Jeter, the longtime Yankees shortstop, joins elite company as he is just the fourth person honored with a statue at Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory. The only other player sculptures in the museum are baseball legends Babe Ruth, Ted Williams and Ken Griffey, Jr.

“It’s a true honor to be recognized in this way by Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory,” said Derek Jeter. “Louisville Slugger is synonymous with baseball. I’ve used the same bat model (P72) throughout my career and it’s a privilege to have such a tribute in this great museum devoted to the skill and history of hitting,” he said.

Since his major league debut in 1995, Jeter has been one of baseball’s most popular figures and is currently the all-time New York Yankees hit leader. He has been selected as an All-Star 12 times, won the Silver Slugger award four times and earned the Gold Glove award on five occasions. He won the Rookie of the Year Award in 1996 and helped the Yankees win the World Series the same year.

Jeter was also an integral part of World Series championship-winning teams in 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2009. He is the only player in history to win both the All-Star Game MVP Award and the World Series MVP Award in the same year. He has served as the Yankees’ team captain since 2003 and collected his 3,000th career hit earlier this season.

The sculpture unveiling coincides with Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory’s 15th Anniversary Year. In May, the museum welcomed its record 3-millionth guest. With 234,771 visitors last year, Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory broke its attendance record in 2010; a record unmatched since the museum opened for its first full year in 1997.

    Beware Cylon Jeter.

I think its the nose and big chin. Not a good job to say the least.

So close yet so far. Fat Elvis Jeter?

  6. Yogi Mantle October 12th, 2011 at 7:05 pm

That statue, or really wax figure, reminds me of someone, but not Jeter.

When they say a statue, I was picturing a bronze statue, not a wax work.

I think it looks a bit like Thome.

Face needs to be narrower from mouth down

    Eppler interviewing for Angels too.

    Mark Feinsand
The Yankees have granted the Angels permission to interview both Billy Eppler and Damon Oppenheimer for their vacant general manager job.

When they finished this, they had to realize they screwed up, right?

Maybe someone in China made it? I hear they do a bang up job with our national heros.

  11. luis October 12th, 2011 at 7:09 pm

I don’t know who Eppler is, but i certainly don’t want Oppenheimer to go…I rather have him taking care of the draft for the Yankees

Sounds like a nice place to visit.

On another note – Harold Reynolds on the MLB show just called out Theo, for letting Terry Francona take the heat, and fall on his sword, and then going out and getting another job with a promotion (team president).

    Interesting.

    Anyway, what a great honor.

The records and honors just keep piling up for Jeter. Not bad for someone who’s just a “singles hitter.”

GB, Buchholz pitching a no hitter was the only thing that put him on that pedestal. He is a decent pitcher, but when you saw him being sent back down and remaining in the minors it would have raised some eyebrows about his “stuff”. His no hitter and him being a Red Sox player is what elevated him in the eyes of NESPN, and they seem to dictate the sports talking points.

    ————————————————————————————————————————-

You see it often enough on here about Buchholz is outstanding…Buchholz is sensational….

To me, all three so far are pretty much the same pitchers. They all have something else in common. They’re all 1st round picks who have had injuries. Not sure if that year in the bullpen helped or hurt Hughes. It cost him a lot of immings and a big innings jump. he hadn’t pitched a 100 inning season since 2007 (barely) and that was a huge jump for a 23 year old to make. Gotta think that’s one reason that he dropped of so sharply in the second half of 2010. Just wearing down.

it’s past now, but, I think he rebounds to somewhere between his first 3 months of 2010 and his last 3 months of 2011. Mid -to high 3 ERA and contimue to improve. Not sure that he’ll be a 200 strikeout pitcher a year, but certainly a solid #2 or #3 type and that pretty good. It took a few years for Sabathia to become Sabathia.

    Joe,

If they sent Swisher to a team like Philly, I’m asking for Mayberry in return. Maybe add a David Phelps or a Corbin Joseph (who has no place to play) and a bit of offsetting money and get a minor leaguer back with Mayberry.

Miggy with a chance here. Probably be tempted to walk him even in this situation. However, Victor has been hitting a little bit better as of late so I suppose you pitch to him.

Hmm. A stud hitter who is ACTUALLY coming through for their team in the post season. What a concept…

  27. GreenBeret7 October 12th, 2011 at 7:28 pm

Not sure if Paul Maholm would be worth looking into if Pittsburgh doesn’t pick up his option. Not a top 2 or 3 rotation pitcher, but is left handed. I wouldn’t trade for him and have to pick up his $9.75 mil option, though. he missed the last 6 weeks with a shoulder strain.

They say a fish rots from the head down (or something like that). Listening to EEI it appears that these problems didn’t just suddenly appear. And where were the big boys when it was going on? Out on their yachts?

You remember how Beckett, Lackey and Lester ended their season? Not on a high note. In fact, I believe the Showalters beat Beckett twice in the last week. Lester couldn’t get out of the 5th inning.

Who were the three frat boys who sat in the clubhouse swilling beer, eating chicken, and playing video games? None other than that unholy trio.

EEI said it, ESPN has said it, and MLB tv has said it. There is no magic elixir that is going to do any quick healing on that team, where players aren’t getting along and pitchers don’t bother staying in shape.

And did you hear that some players were accused of stealing things out of other players’ lockers and the organization is thinking of putting cameras in the lockerroom?

I guess once a laptops stealer, always a steal of some sort. (No idea if it’s Beckett.)

I remember Gammons right after THE GREATEST COLLAPSE IN THE HISTORY OF BASEBALL saying that are sometimes team-defining moments where some loss has been so devastating that the team never recovered. He gave examples but they were in other sports. He wondered out loud if the same thing could happen to the Sux.

THE GREATEST COLLAPSE IN THE HISTORY OF BASEBALL, minus any of the other crap going on, maybe you regroup in a few years and come back okay. That collapse with players not getting along, stealing going on, and frat boy behavior?

They’ll be lucky to play 500 ball next season.

  31. Jim October 12th, 2011 at 7:31 pm

boy I was mad at Girardi for challenging Cabrera once in the Division series but if Texas blows this series there are going to be some questions asked of Washington of just why he keeps letting Cabrera beat him.

Smart money says don’t believe any trade rumors. Unless you haven’t been around the block before and then believe them all.

The media is paid to get readers reading.

Wait until the postseason is over and your team gives you some idea on where it sees itself going.

No matter how much anyone joneses for a player, it’s silly to bank your hopes on it.

How many guarantees were made on this forum that Crawford was going to be a Yankee?

Doc Joe……Terry Fran is very well respected and liked in the players community and certainly are viewing this as in the past just another bush league maneuver by ownership…Maybe even more so….Does anyone else see a lot of Manny Ram-Bam’s swing in Miguel Cabrera in recent years…..For some reason I think his best year is yet to come……..FB, I know one or two here who think Lester and Bucholtz walk on water…..

  39. Yogi Mantle October 12th, 2011 at 7:35 pm

GB, I agree with your comments on Hughes. My biggest concern for him is about him being able to remain healthy. He has had some odd injuries that curtailed his career so far, especially this past season with the dead arm.

The key to Hughes will be if he can stay healthy for the whole season.

West Coast Sux fan couldn’t crow enough about the beantown bizarros, and he had some company here.

Pat M – how very sad that there are guys in the clubhouse who didn’t want Crawford. My feeling? Who the F do they think they are? Talk about entitlement! That’s why it’s clear that those inmates have taken over the asylum.

You want to know why AGon and Crawford weren’t going to make the difference (besides the fact that they were merely replacements for even better players)? Because when you have a slovenly, arguing, clubhouse that’s been allowed to go unchecked, great players merely become bandaids on corpses.

Pat M – I referred to the goup of posters who always overvalue the Sux as the Suxers Annual Laudatory Committee. The Sux could decide to fold up the team next year and play every other game and I swear the usual suspects would guarantee us that they needed to be watched because they were going to pobably overtake the Yankees.

Pat M, wow…….so I actually think Lester is a tremendous pitcher and Buchholz is good. It doesn’t take a genius to think the former – and Buchholz is good. It’s not my problem if you want to take the quantum leap to “walking on water”. Why does it bother you that I think so highly of Lester (most people do) and actually think Buchholz is good? Yeah, you can say it doesn’t, but why even passive aggressively refer to me? No I’m not sensitive – it was apparent you were referring to me. I’m not going to apologize for wishing Lester was in pinstripes or thinking Buchholz is a good pitcher…………but I’m not going to continue defending it either as I don’t think there’s any point to doing so.

I’m not surprised. Fister did decently and Porcello did splendidly in their respective (albeit few) starts vs the Rangers in the regular season.

also, not sure Fister can be classified as ‘mediocre’ considering he finished in the top ten in the AL in ERA and WHIP

GB. Mrs. Templar is fine. Working too hard saving lives – now they should be paid millions. And baby Simon is fine, getting ready for his 1st contract renewal. We’re still on track for him as opening day SS in 2028 or 2030.

Jeter will be retired by then, won’t he?

    Yogi,

I’m sure that Hughes can make those numbers a reality if he stays healthy, that’s the key. I think he knows that he has to come to ST very healthy and in top form, because he is going to have a lot of competition.

    LGY,

Seriously, believe me when i tell you that Miggy is not the kind of player you want in a Yankee uniform. In fact, i would dare to say that he is the “Anti Yankee” player….selfcentered, no ethics and very obnoxious as person.

  88. GreenBeret7 October 12th, 2011 at 7:58 pm

Actually, Hughes’ 2010 numbers were pretty close to those average Pettitte numbers. He’s more than capable of repeating that. Pettitte’s career ERA was just a shade under 4.00

  89. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 12th, 2011 at 7:59 pm

J Al – one of my sisters is heavily invested in them and also heavily realistic. She really has major concerns about who the team has become and the chances for their regrouping.

She certainly knows more about the Sux than some posters on the lohud forum who watch them from afar and don’t even bother watching their games but continue to yammer about their great excellent pitching, when Lester has really fallen off and by all indications has become a clubhouse slob.

Yes, Betsy, I’m talking about you.

Trisha, I’ve known quite a few Sox fans in my time that had the low down. Your sister is like them, I guess.

Lester can throw dominant games, but his pitch counts running on the high side isn’t really a new thing for him, & this year all those extra pitches wore him out and he couldn’t cut the ball well. I don’t consider him to be in C’s class, for example.

Buccholz hasn’t been efficient enough to warrant his lowish K rates.

  98. Jerkface October 12th, 2011 at 8:04 pm

I heartily disaree. It means to me that the person knows a lot more about the team than fans of another team posting on the other team blog.

I give myself credit for being more in touch with lots about the Sux because I am right near them – as I certainly believe posters in NY know infinitely more about the Mets than I could hope to – or actually care to.

In turn, I believe my sister as a follower of that team and an avid fan knows even more about them than I do.

I think it’s common sense based on everything that has come out to figure they are not going to have a banner year next season. You don’t flip a switch on cancer.

    Yep. Just ask the Mets.

While they could be competitive, the problems in that clubhouse are abundant. There will be a lot of changes, and there is no telling what those changes will do. Typically, teams that have a year like the Saux did, don’t do well for a while afterwards. It may not be guaranteed, but it isn’t easy for a team to overcome.

  119. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 12th, 2011 at 8:23 pm

I seriously cannot imagine any baseball person who could go in there and establish the kind of order they need – other than someone like Sweet Lou, and he’s not managing anymore.

You see what happened to someone with Tito’s temperament. He’s lucky he had roiders or he wouldn’t have sniffed a world series.

I don’t know if I believed it when I made it because I think he was hitting his lowest at that point. But there’s no way I was going to let some lowly Sux fan take shots at Jete.

The trouble is Hamilton is given a small allowance by his handlers in order to help keep him under control. There was a fall out with him a couple years ago. What will happen to him long term, after his playing days are over?

I do admire that he got his act together, but he put himself in that horrible position to begin with. He has to have minders around him all the time to keep him from slipping again. People like that need help from others, but most don’t have the resources Hamilton has to keep them clean.

The ESPN crew are all going nuts over the Rangers being a force to deal with for the foreseeable future, especially if they get to the WS again. The Tiggers or the Rangers will get heaps of over the top praise no matter which team gets in. I don’t root for either team, but I’d rather see the Rangers out simply because of not wanting to see them repeat an appearance in the WS. ESPN were talking about how, if the Rangers were to advance to the WS then they would be the model franchise that others will emulate. Pushing pitchers to go deeper in games, instead of the pitch count being of concern.

  213. Teary Francona October 12th, 2011 at 9:13 pm

Their current roster that won 91 games is already better than most teams in the AL and they will have money to spend. I hope they spend it poorly and continue to lose, but there isn’t really evidence of a collapse causing teams to be bad indefinitely. The Yankees had one of the biggest postseason collapses ever and they have turned out just fine. Its about the players.

The red sox still have a-gon, pedroia, ellsbury, youkilis, and crawford and beckett/lester/buchholz. I don’t think they will have a powerhouse or anything, but in the playoff hunt each year? Sure. Just like the Rays but in a different fashion. They just aren’t like the Mets, who not only had a crappy roster of injury prone players but then they moved into a stadium that played against their best players… double whammy.

Actually it’s about a lot more than the players and if you choose to ignore everything else swirling inthe background in beantown, then you can step over to the Suxers Annual Ludatory Committee, where the few posters who belong are so mesmerized by the Sux players that they don’t even bother going a whit beyond the players’ names and still annoint them something special.

If you want to put some money on it jerkface, I’ll let you know how out in left field I really think you are with this stuff.

    Just say the word.

You can call the in the playoff hunt — you know the team with all the names you named who went 8-20 in September, and I’ll call them out of it, the team with all the names you named who ended up third this season, as I predicted they would – and I didn’t even know about their internal problems.

Eppler is one of the reasons Joba is a reliever.

    Odds, let him walk.

I didn’t even have to ask you if he should stay or not lol.

luis, you’re right. They looked totally defeated. And with what we now know, little wonder.

    I wasn’t here in 07 so you don’t know what I predicted.

Hm, so you weren’t against the Red Sox in 07? Not even on the Daily News? Highly unlikely. Wouldn’t be like you to only go against the sox when they were down. And if cheating changes the terrain what guarantee is there that the sox wouldn’t do anything to cheat going forward?

    Odds,

    Then Eppler can go!!

    ——————————

That is the one blemish I hold against him. Some fans have questioned his role as the pro scouting director.

I’m not in charge of inept umpires or cheating teams.

I call things based on the knowns

Based on the known, the Sux will be sucking wind for at least the entirety of next season.

The Red Sox will always cheat. Whether it be with cameras to detect catcher signs. Theyll always find a way to cheat, because they want to win, at any cost.
