Cashman: “We’re not missing anything right now”

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Oct 17, 2011 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Brian Cashman has planned a series of meetings this week, but his contract won’t be a topic of discussion. Cashman is holding his annual pro-scouting meetings this week in New York, and for Cashman, these meetings must happen before any plans are put in place.

“We’re not missing anything right now,” he said. “I’m doing my job on a daily basis… There is nothing (new) right now.”

Cashman said he might have some contract discussions with Hal Steinbrenner in the not-so-distant future, but those won’t necessarily involve a trip to Tampa. Those discussions “could be on the phone,” Cashman said.

For now, the focus is on the pro scouts who were given last week to go home, spend time with family and recharge after intense advance scouting for postseason preparation. This week is when the Yankees will begin to seriously look back and plan ahead.

“We assess ourselves,” Cashman said. “We assess our system. We assess the market that’s available to us. It’s all of it.”

Cashman wouldn’t comment on the status of CC Sabathia, but he said he has not yet spoken to guys like Eric Chavez, Freddy Garcia or Andruw Jones. He wouldn’t be ready to have those conversations until he’s finished with this week’s meetings.

Looks like a bunch of good for nothing hooligans. :P

    try 7-28 w/ 7rbi

Before he had a dynamite game 6 against the bad tigers pitchers, young was 4 for 22 with 2 RBI in the ALCS. Before this year he hit .254 .275 .343 .619 in the playoffs.

    This year he hit .209 .244 .349 .593

Whatever batting ability you want to attribute to michael young, it hasn’t helped him in the playoffs.

  4. hardwired7 October 17th, 2011 at 6:32 pm

Red Sox would like Matt Garza for Theo, but they’ll settle for the Miller High Life Delivery Guy.

Au contraire. We’re missing an opportunity to play in the World Series.

the red sox are reaching. they have no leverage.

theo left because he wanted to be out of boston.

the sox would be lucky to get a bag of balls and a season long 20% discount on popeyes

  7. GreenBeret7 October 17th, 2011 at 6:40 pm

I’ll bet those are his scouts.

From bottom left is Joeboy. top left is Bret, to the right of Cashman is LGY, next to him in the matching green coat is Jerky and bottom right is Champ. The one at bottom center is Chip. he’s telling Cashman all about the sensible trade proposals he has lined up. The old guy in back of Cashman is Randy. He has just sharpened his pencil. Randy doesn’t need it to write with, Impossible to lift good finger prints off of a pencil.

Curious as to what is the room in the picture? At the stadium looking out on the field, with a big cushy office chair? Is this Cash’s office? Anybody know? Thanks

  9. NYYanksFan October 17th, 2011 at 6:49 pm

    correction**
2 for 15 with no RBI was ALDS

Add a bunch of dials and consoles and it sort of looks like the bridge of an aircraft carrier.

Or at least the Hollywood version.

  12. GreenBeret7 October 17th, 2011 at 6:51 pm

    Or the Starship Enterprise.

Uhurah is in the Captain’s quarter’s with Kirk. I see Spock and Sulu seated on two of the chairs….oooops…not Spock and Sulu, that’s Jorge Posada and Kei Igawa.

  15. Unnamedsource October 17th, 2011 at 6:57 pm

Thank heavens the lack of conversations with pro scouts did not keep Cashman from getting the Zoilo Almonte transaction done on 10/14/2011 as reported by MLBAM! Anyone care to explain it? The press seems to have ignored it.

  16. 108 stitches October 17th, 2011 at 6:59 pm

Nothing of significance gets shaking until the WS is over and time frames for the offseason are posted which Chad will soon be doing.

They’ll be rumors galore what will happen at the winter meetings and which free agents will sign with who.

  17. GreenBeret7 October 17th, 2011 at 7:01 pm

From the way it looks right now, the 40 man roster is down to 32. That’s the next list I’m looking for. Who is going to be left exposed to the Rule 5 Draft.

  18. Jerkface October 17th, 2011 at 7:05 pm

    Anyone care to explain it?

ALmonte added to 40 man roster to protect from rule 5 draft

  19. blake October 17th, 2011 at 7:08 pm

They just played the clip from Berkman before the season about the Rangers……saying that without Lee the Rangers would be an average team and calling the Beltre deal a reach….etc…….bet Sir Lancelot didn’t think he’d see them in the WS a few months later

  20. GreenBeret7 October 17th, 2011 at 7:09 pm

Looks like the Donut Choker is on WFAN with Kim Jones tonight. Hope she’s wearing waterproof gear. With all of his drooling, she’ll need it.

  25. DaSaint007 October 17th, 2011 at 7:38 pm

That pic does kinda look like the bridge of a ship. I’d prefer to think of it as an Amphib rather than a carrier, though Cashman does look like an Air Boss.

  26. luis October 17th, 2011 at 7:38 pm

    Hi everyone,

JAP, Yankeefem, news on the Jesus…..apparently he won’t play down here, that’s a bit of good news, because usually the players that are going to play with the big club are not allowed to play winter ball. it’s bad that i wont be able to see him play down here :( , but at least this means that probably he is staying for good with the Yankees

  27. austinmac October 17th, 2011 at 7:46 pm

    Luis,

Interesting news. I feel a bit like an insider in winter league ball.:)

  28. DaSaint007 October 17th, 2011 at 7:50 pm

Looking forward to Jesus being loose in the Yankee lineup next season.

On paper at least, Gardner, Jeter, Cano, ARod, Tex, Montero, Grandy, Swisher, and Martin looks impressive.

  29. luis October 17th, 2011 at 7:51 pm

    austinmac October 17th, 2011 at 7:46 pm

LOL!, i was actually talking to one of Magallanes executives ( Montero’s local team ), and he told me the bit of news that i posted….It’s a shame…but in the end, i want him to play for the Yankees. So yeah, i guess i have some connections down here ;)

  30. joeman October 17th, 2011 at 7:53 pm

lets just say they trade Gardner and his .250 avg and his .340 OBP….

  31. Jerkface October 17th, 2011 at 7:57 pm

Those are Mark Teixeira’s stats, Gardner hit .259 and on based .345, and hit .270 .356 .365 .721 from May 1st on, and hit in the postseason, and is a GG LFer one of the best defensive OFers in the game.

lets say they don’t trade him.

  32. luis October 17th, 2011 at 7:57 pm

    DaSaint007 October 17th, 2011 at 7:50 pm

.721 ops having corner outfielders are a dime a dozen.

I would not lose a minute of sleep if they traded Gardner.

With that said they’ll likely not trade him until next year.

And using someone’s SSS playoffs numbers as a reason to keep him???

  45. luis October 17th, 2011 at 8:20 pm

    Joeman,

Quite the contrary…..If he plays, he might be traded, if he doesn’t play it means that the Yankees have him in high regard so they won’t risk a injury down here, besides he caught a full season at triple A already.

dont worry they will lose gardy eventually to a superstar LF and be a complete allstar team

  53. LockDown October 17th, 2011 at 8:28 pm

Gardner’s speed disrupts the pitcher & manufactures runs. He steals bases. Has the ability to turn a single into a double, a double into a triple. I recall him scoring on a shallow ball. Without him the team is slow.

  54. mick October 17th, 2011 at 8:29 pm

holliday would have been a good pickup

  55. mick October 17th, 2011 at 8:30 pm

So who is this monster bat you speak of?

Runs saved is also a value .

I’ve watch the Yankees have to many OF that were average or below.

It’s nice to see them have 2 plus defenders out there.

  59. m October 17th, 2011 at 8:33 pm

Someone suggested Gardner for one of the National pitchers (RAB). (because the Nationals actually appreciate what Gardner can do)

they need a little variety on this team, it is getting too one-dimensional

Not if they think they are ready for their planned roles for next season ( primary DH )……as far as i can remember the really good players down here where forbiden to play to avoid injuries…. I remember a prospect called Carney Langsford, he played two weeks ( he killed the league ) and was inmediately ordered not to play anymore.

My guess is that they plan to use him as DH and ease him behind the plate slowly, so there is no point in risking his bat

Choo is a nice hedge in case Kemp doesn’t work out. I say bring in Choo now, trade Swisher for pitching and keep costs down for now in LF with Gardner.

There’s still time to find Gardner a home and increase value.

This is it for Swish – one more year max.

Lester going on the offensive. Calling media outlets to cry about how they are being portrayed.

“You know what? We didn’t play good baseball. People are making us out to be a bunch of drunk, fried-chicken eating SOBs, playing video games. You can ask my wife, for the last 10 years I don’t think I’ve played a single video game, and Josh (Beckett) and Lack (John Lackey) are the same way. like the Gardner talk…keep it up & get him out of here

    ———————————————————————

Cashman really messed up last off season.

Just think if he had wanted to only spend money he could have had Crawford.

Then just think about how good that OF would have been for the next 7 years.

whats Gardner have to do with Crawford

  106. m October 17th, 2011 at 9:20 pm

    Gardner blocked Crawford.

    That’s a good thing. :)

    Nick,

Sorry. Too much kanji for me to read.

  107. Bret The Hitman October 17th, 2011 at 9:20 pm

    3 some with Philly:

    To Yankees: Brandon McCarthy

  108. Bret The Hitman October 17th, 2011 at 9:22 pm

  109. LGY October 17th, 2011 at 9:22 pm

    Joeman

Who plays LF and RF next season after you trade Gardner and Swisher?

And how are you planning on trading for Cain without including Montero?

  110. blake October 17th, 2011 at 9:24 pm

    Id trade him for Brown……

  111. blake October 17th, 2011 at 9:25 pm

McCarthy isn’t that good…..id cut the As out and keep Brown for myself in that deal…..

  112. Nick in SF October 17th, 2011 at 9:26 pm

    Too much kanji?!?!??!?!

I’m listening to this to calm myself down…. I also have to listen to it to calm myself down every time I remember that Bret Gardner is still a New York Baseball Yankee.

  114. Bret The Hitman October 17th, 2011 at 9:26 pm

    Blake,

Do you think that’s a fair trade for both sides? Swisher for D. Brown?

  115. blake October 17th, 2011 at 9:28 pm

Is Choo better than Swisher right now? He wasn’t this year……I like him a lot and think he’d be a nice add to the Yanks…..just don’t know if he’s enough of an upgrade over swish to warrant the price to trade for him.

  116. m October 17th, 2011 at 9:29 pm

Did Choo ever get out of his mandatory military service?

  117. Bret The Hitman October 17th, 2011 at 9:31 pm

    Blake,

While Choo and Swish are comparable right now. However, a higher portion of Choo’s OBP is tied up in BA. Choo is a career .290 hitter. He’s a better baserunner and better defender than Swisher as well and he offers an additional year of control. I’d much rather have Choo over Swisher.

I’d let Cleveland pick from Noesi, Warren, Brackman, Phelps…maybe Joba.

  118. Yogi Mantle October 17th, 2011 at 9:34 pm

When a player goes off like Lester did, it comes off as protesting too much…

He admits that there was a discipline problem that Francona didn’t address, sweeps aside the beer issue as being nothing, which it might be, but the underlying current of his comments were that there were behavioral issues that were going on that weren’t addressed.

I don’t particularly find anything terribly wrong with a player, particularly a pitcher, having a beer or a couple of beers during the game when they aren’t playing. What seems to be the bigger issue at hand is the disconnect between the players by position, the pitchers and the fielders seemed to be divided.

He pushes Francona under the bus, yet he doesn’t even recognize that he is doing it. He threw other teammates under the bus with Francona.

His comment about not having played video games in years, just ask my wife, was really lame. Does his wife sit around the clubhouse with them? If not, then how the heck would she know?

The RS team is fractured. The comments from the various players are not helping matters. Some things are better off left unsaid. Once they are said, it is tough to back track and make out as if they weren’t said. It will leave an undercurrent in that clubhouse for a long time, regardless of success or failure.

  119. blake October 17th, 2011 at 9:34 pm

“Do you think that’s a fair trade for both sides? Swisher for D. Brown?”

    Yes….pretty much.

  120. blake October 17th, 2011 at 9:35 pm

Yea Choo is a better player than Swisher I think…..but he wasn’t that good this year and Id be hesitant to trade a lot for him hoping he’d bounce back. You can have Swisher and not trade anything……

  121. raymagnetic October 17th, 2011 at 10:00 pm

“So who is this monster bat you speak of?

Runs saved is also a value .

I’ve watch the Yankees have to many OF that were average or below.

It’s nice to see them have 2 plus defenders out there.”

Defense in itself is overrated and hard to quantify. I don’t have an outfielder in mind. I just want a traditional power hitting left fielder. Gardner’s okay though, I just don’t love him.

  122. Jerkface October 17th, 2011 at 10:12 pm

The Yankees don’t need Brandon McCarthy in their rotation. If a 3 way deal were possible with the Phils getting Swisher and giving up Dom Brown, then cut it down to a 2 way and keep Brown.

  123. Duh Innings October 18th, 2011 at 2:02 am

    Yanks rotation to start 2012:

Burnett/Nova/Hughes/Wang re-signed for $2M double his salary with the lowly Nats/Noesi

    4/5ths homegrown and cheap.

If Burnett sucks, Nova/Hughes/Wang/Noesi/Banuelos wherever in the rotation depending on how well he pitches for an all-homegrown rotation before a trade for a starter, or Banuelos replaces the worst Yankee starter.

The bullpen after Rivera, Robertson, Soriano, and Logan could be Wade, Lopez (first name?) signed as the second lefty, and whoever wins the final slot in spring training.

  124. Duh Innings October 18th, 2011 at 2:05 am

BTW Burnett/Nova/Hughes/Wang/Noesi could easily turn into Cain/Burnett/Nova/Hughes/Banuelos so pipe down with “your rotation is crap” nonsense.

    =======================
Any rotation that includes A.J. Burnett is entitled to be referred to as “crap”
