Baseball America high on Bichette’s potential
Based on its analysis of the Yankees draft class, Baseball America seems to be among those who are coming around on top pick Dante Bichette Jr.
Seen as a mild reach on draft day, Bichette turned in an MVP season in the Gulf Coast League, and he’s looking more and more like a strong choice for an organization that needs power bats. From Baseball America’s analysis:
(Bichette) got off to a slow start, but his natural timing and bat-to-ball skills took over… The Yankees believe Bichette not only will stay in the infield but will be an asset defensively at third with solid hands, a plus arm and the agility to defend bunts.
Baseball America picked college relievers Mark Montgomery (51 strikeouts in 28.1 innings) and Branden Pinder (0.68 WHIP) as players who could move quickly, but the review also noted that Bichette could move faster than most high school hitters.

If Hoyer is in place, nothing to stop the Cubs from telling Boston nevermind on Theo. Then what does Boston do with him now?
Chad, or anyone who knows,
When a player is traded with Cash as part of the trade (the trading team eats part of the players contract)…..is that money subject to the luxury tax?
So if player X
had 32 million dollars left on his deal……and the trading team offered to pay 20 million of it to make the trade agreeable, would that 20 million count towards the luxury tax for the trading team?
The Cubs just want Hoyer to be Theo’s puppet…..Theo will be making the decisions there. If I were the Cubs and the Sox kept trying to play hardball Id just tell them to stick it and Id sign him next year…..its not like the Cubs are close to winning anyway.
i think it would be like a package. theo as president of baseball operations, hoyer as gm. it’s not like if they had hoyer they wouldn’t need theo. he’d still be the one really calling the shots.
Only players on the 40 man roster count towards the luxury tax.
Maybe the Cubs sign CJ Wilson & Pujols & pickup Youk, Lackey & Beckett.
blake
exactly. let the rs pay for theo to do nothing, that will endear them more to their fans.
World Series ratings down (surprise, surprise)
http://tiny.cc/kpfcu
LGY,
That’s what I thought also….so basically trading player x would take all that money off as it pertains to the luxury tax
Jed did his work in SD……he was only sent there to get Adrian Gonzalez to Boston
Wow Blake, you’re kind of rough on the Hoyer.
Figured the ratings wouldn’t be great…..but a little interesting that they are down from last year when one of the teams is the same……..is SF that more exciting than St. Louis? I guess they had Lincecum and Blackbeard……but the Cards have Pujols.
Hey Trish – are you going to give Dante Jr. the same nickname you gave his father from waaay back on the ill-fated NYTimes Yankee forum?
“Wow Blake, you’re kind of rough on the Hoyer.”
Well Im half joking but I do think its telling that SD would just let him walk with no compensation……suggests that maybe they prefer Byrnes anyway and that they are indifferent that he’s leaving.
Was that trade as bad as we perceive it to be? Did SD get anything of value back for A-gon? It did seem suspicious.

Will do, as soon as you give me a user name and a password to get behind the pay wall.
Thanks for the feedback on the luxury tax. Guess we’ll have to make sure AJ isn’t on the 40 man at the start of the season!
Let’s see. Trade AJ and money to the Nationals for Jordan Zimmerman. That way his wife can drive from their mansion in Maryland to see him pitch games .{She won’t fly}. Picture of their home:

Kate,
They got overhyped prospects…..don’t know if they could have beat that deal elsewhere or not but it was light on the return by most accounts.
@SI_LeeJenkins: Not fair to say Jed Hoyer got nothing for Adrian Gonzalez. Theo Epstein did give him another job
What do you mean the Padres got nothing for Adrian Gonzalez? They got I’m able to hit below the Mendoza line, 1st baseman, Anthony Rizzo.
I remember after the A Gon trade Hoyer basically admitted he lusted after the Sox prospects.
Barely even dealt with anyone else and didn’t fully shop Gonzalez.
True slimeball.
Never know where a Yankee fan is gonna turn up or what they are capable of…… yikes!

Pretty much everyone panned the Gonzalez trade from the Padres side.

So where will Bichette be next year, Staten Island?
Im guessing Dante starts at Charleston.
My guess they start him at Low A and see how he does. If he struggles he goes to SI, but he did so well in the GCL I can see them skipping SI (plus he did play like 2 games there)
Remember when Casey Kelly was better than Banuelos?
Don’t know if that’s really AJ’s house, but I love it. Awesome staircase.
I have no problem keeping AJ. He had a strong finish with the changes he made prior to september. His pitches & downward movement have improved and better than they’ve been in a long while. His changeup is above average now & his sinker has sharpened & I could be wrong, but he looks to have added a split fb.
Would like to see him get a chance to finish his work with Rothschild, bounce back and help the team win games in the regular season (and not just the post).
And yeah, I know I’m in a very very small minority. But he’s a cool guy, who works hard & is willing to make any changes necessary to help the team win, unlike beer & chicken eating Lacky.
“Remember when Casey Kelly was better than Banuelos?”
I remember when Keith Law kept saying he was
Back to luxury tax. The new CBA which MLB hopes to hammer out before the end of the WS. From an article I just read How Changes to MLB’s Luxury Tax Could Influence Player Contracts, Now
by Maury Brown
“Each year on December 12, any club that has broken the threshold is informed of the amount owed. The MLBPA is also informed as Luxury Tax money is not revenue-sharing, but rather mostly returned to the players in the form of benefits. After $5 million is skimmed off the top for league services, 75 percent of the remaining amount goes back to the players. If you wonder why the players went for the soft-cap in MLB, here’s a large reason why. The remaining 25 percent goes into the league’s Industry Growth Fund.”
“Here’s why contracts now could be influenced.
Based upon the current agreement getting ready to expire, if the tax rate is adjusted to address the likes of the Yankees busting the threshold each year, or if it is collectively bargained to lower the threshold from the current $178 million set for 2011, clubs may rethink how the structure multi-year contracts this year, how much they are willing to offer players for single year deals based upon total player payroll.”
“To add to this, while we’re talking about those at the top, it’s possible that those on the bottom might be – to repeat might be – impacted, should some form of penalty be assessed some new tax for those that go below a certain threshold.”
Could the results of the new CBA effect if the Yankees sign a player for big bucks and multiple years like CJ Wilson, or if they go the route and sign a player like Yu Darvish, after winning the posting fee which is not subject to the luxury tax?
The signing of Dante Bichette Jr. seemed to be criticized from the beginning. It’s nice to see the kid proving people wrong.
LockDown-I love that staircase too. Very cool.
I don’t think anyone was necessarily against picking Dante…..it was just a question of coukd they have gotten him later? Maybe there were more teams on him than it seemed….who knows.

Pat, Erin
Was he the one that killed Moammar Gadhafi today?
House seems very formal for AJ. Also very white for a family with 2 young boys.
“Was he the one that killed Moammar Gadhafi today?”
That’s what they are currently reporting
Someone besides Hoyer must have signed off on the Agon deal. Wouldn’t you (as management) be suspicious? Sounds like someone was asleep at the wheel.
AJ’s house is all white. What kind of color is that for a family w/ young boys?
oh Pat you are too quick

Doesn’t AJ have that huge home theater in his house? Maybe that’s where he’s relegated to.
My guess is that the wife picks & designs the house… as it should be
So her young sons don’t have to have a say in it, aside from their bedrooms/playrooms.

Easier to spackle and paint a white wall after AJ has a bad game.
“So her young sons don’t have to have a say in it”
They may not get a vote but their foot and hand prints will speak loudly without even adding a magic marker into the equation.
There’s a cage with a man cave out back for AJ and the boys.
Cashman refused to say whether the Yankees would be interested in bidding on Darvish, which is likely to cost the winning bidder upward of $100 million with the posting fee

True. But isn’t it easier to clean tiles & paint over a white wall then kids scratching up wood.
Not sure if they have a maid to help clean up.
At least, hope there’s a man cave, because that’s a very “girlie” house, you know, the “No shoes inside, and food only in the kitchen” type.

Sox believing their press clippings……
“I just think the big problem with this team this year was that everybody on the team knew how good we were, on paper the best team in baseball in the last 10 years or whatever,” Buchholz said. “We expected to go walk out on the field and win, and it wasn’t happening. I don’t think anybody knew what to do.”

Oh, right I forgot about the barn. See, he’s got plenty of space.
That house is far too pretentious for me.
Don’t know if Id call Yadie a star……he’s very good player …..now if he could catch like himself and hit like Napoli…..he’d be a star.
Asked how he felt about Young possibly coming back next season, Buchholz said, “That’s not my decision. It doesn’t bother me regardless. The only thing I have to do is train a lot harder this off-season to stay healthy the whole season…. It wouldn’t bother me at all [if he didn't come back].”
Way to show support for your pitching coach Clay.

Yadier molina is about 100x better than the current yankee starting catcher.
“I really think they’ll be a 4th-5th place team in the coming years.”
G Love – from your mouth to God’s ear!!! I definitely agree with you. I really think that any Sux zealots are going to have to think beyond their ardor for the (former?) reputations of the Sux pitching rotation and take a hard look at the reality of the entire situation – including how the Sux rotation really throws the ball. If these same people gave the Yankees the same latitude they give to the Sux, heck they’d be throwing themselves at the feet of the Yankees!!!
“Hey Trish – are you going to give Dante Jr. the same nickname you gave his father from waaay back on the ill-fated NYTimes Yankee forum?”
TStan, you cannot imagine how many times over the years I’ve thought about that nickname! Because of the way I felt about the dad, it’s kind of hard to wrap my mind around being able to embrace the son, ha ha!!!
By the way, do you remember that use of the nickname became a bannable offense???
From the Sherman article ……wonder if they’d trade him?
Wain’ manor: Adam says he will be good as ever
The last time the Cardinals made the World Series, Adam Wainwright also was not in the rotation, but as the Mets and Carlos Beltran remember, he was the team’s closer that October before he emerged as St. Louis’ ace.
This time St. Louis made it all this way without Wainwright, who needed Tommy John surgery in February. Wainwright says he “feels like I am part of this.”
But the key thing for the Cardinals is no team —not even the one that signs C.J. Wilson —is going to add a better starter next year than St. Louis is just by getting their ace back.
“Absolutely, no doubt about it,” Wainwright said, when asked if he expects to be as good as ever. He finished third and second in the last two NL Cy Young votes.
Wainwright is throwing fastballs and changeups from the mound “at 100 percent” and noticing better sink than ever on his fastball. He theorizes that is because his arm doesn’t hurt and he can get full extension.
Wainwright has club options for $9 million in 2012 and $12 million in 2013 that the Cardinals have yet to pick up, but the expectation is that they will.
“Yadier molina is about 100x better than the current yankee starting catcher.”
Well yea….but Russ isn’t exactly a star either. Yadie is one of the better defenders we’ve seen in awhile and has made himself into a pretty good hitter also……he’s a really good player …..
Should Washington move Hamilton down in the order?

Hey Trish – if the kid hits anywhere like his dad while in his prime (Dante Pig…er Bichette in ’95 hit .340/40/128), gonna like him lots.
Hope all’s well, ts
I agree that Bichette should start at Low-A Charleston. He pretty much dominated the GCL aside from HR power. Who knows, maybe he can make it to the Yankees in 2-3 years, about the time A-Rod needs to go to DH.
Dante really needs to work his tail off to stay at 3B.
