Granderson, Colon nominated for Players Choice Awards

Curtis Granderson might be both the Player of the Year and the Outstanding Player of the Year. Apparently there’s a difference.
Granderson and Bartolo Colon were both nominated for Players Choice Awards. Winners will be announced on MLB Network on November 3.
Granderson is a finalist for both Player of the Year (an award or both leagues) and the American League Outstanding Player of the Year (an award for position players). All three Player of the Year finalists come from the American League — Justin Verlander and Adrian Gonzalez are the others — and one could argue that none of the three is the best candidate from his own roster.
For American League Outstanding Player, it’s Granderson, Gonzalez and Jose Bautista.
Colon is up for American League Comeback Player of the Year. Jacoby Ellsbury and Casey Kotchman are the other finalists.

I hope Colon gets the award. He didn’t come back from injuries, he came back for the dead, and I really liked watching him pitch until he tuckered out.
repost from last thread:
If anyone thinks the Yankees have so much available money that risking $100 million dollars on an unknown quantity such as Darvish is a “no-brainer”, that’s not really the way smart business people think. If the risk fails, jobs will end and the consequences will be far-reaching. What are the odds that Darvish will be lights-out? 2-1, 3-1, 5-1, or more, all against? Will the Yankees take that risk when they can finance their entire minor leagues system for years with that kind of money? Maybe, maybe not, but the idea that “it’s just money” doesn’t fly with me. It’ll be a business decision that I hope turns out well, either way.
Ghost,
That’s why horses don’t bet on people.
Good luck to both. Granderson is a class act and deserves kudos for his performance this year. I’d love to see him develop into a 40/40 player, but that’s probably nitpicking.
Colon carried us the first half of the season, enough to earn him a starting slot in the majors next season. Somewhere else.
the fun continues in beantown:
lose their Manager – TBD but probably broadcasting
lose their GM – Cubs
lose their pitching coach – A’s
Yeah, they’ll be big spenders this offseason. Not.
Can you say consolidation and reorganization?
Colon looks like he’s half in the bag and completely out of shape in that pic.
I love that guy.
Darvish would affect money spent on the major league team.
The Yankees will spend the same amount of money on the minors, the draft, ifa market, etc. regardless.
LGY,
Understood, but any organization with a budget occasionally has to move money from one line to another to meet contingencies. The assumption for many here is that the Yankees have a Budget line entitled “Betting on the come”, and unlimited funding behind it.
I don’t think the Yanks will do anything that will adversely affect the non-ML aspects of the organization.
Perhaps the money budgeted for our Seventh Inning Guy will lower what’s available for Darvish.
Nick,
Not saying the Steinbrenners and Cashman won’t post for Darvish. The Yankees are privately held, so they don’t have to explain anything to shareholders. But neither did the Wilpons and Manaya. Just saying, it’s a big decision to bet the annual budget of many a third-world country on an unknown quantity.
If what I’ve read here is true, and the Yanks win the posting for , say $50 million and sign Darvish, that means $50 million in cash to the Fighters, right now. Am I right?
Nick in SF……I jumped all over the KC Chiefs + 4.5……Raiders don’t have a field goal weapon and no Carson Palmer….Am I missing something here ????…I also have Cal , USC, & Wisconsin who just might be the best team in the country…..Rangers are a expensive wager tonight ( – 180 )……Love The Steelers & Denver ( best bet on the table ) tomorrow ….You have any good games to look at ????
“If what I’ve read here is true, and the Yanks win the posting for , say $50 million and sign Darvish, that means $50 million in cash to the Fighters, right now. Am I right?”
Yes but only if a contract is agreed upon…..otherwise they pay nothing and Darvish can’t be posted again until next offseason.
blake,
Understood, but my post posited that they sign Darvish for the $50 million to go to Japan.
Have to add “Darvish” to my spell-checker, I guess.
Pat M, I have my fingers and toes crossed on Cal, the line has moved from -3 to -1. I fear those Wall Street fat cats are supporting the Utes but this is our time to fight the power. Leaving for AT&T in a few minutes.
I’m with you on Wisconsin. I’m sort of with you on USC but… I really don’t trust them, they didn’t overwhelm Cal last week, it was more of the Bears being inept. But SC does have a lot of athletes, I’d rather root for them than the Irish.
I’m on Nevada, that’s in the 1Q already…. I might put WSU -3 in a teaser and boost it up to +3.5.
Kansas City Chiefs are not a good team… I don’t trust them, even with the Raiders in flux. Beware.
Irabu and Igawa two similar gambles that didn’t work out.
Irabu was billed as the Japanese Roger Clemens in the Rocket’s better days.
I hope the Yankees stay away.
I have a bad feeling about this guy.
Pat M…………….Northwestern getting from Penn St tonight
I wonder if the Nippon Ham Fighters will be more creative w/the posting fee money than the Seibu Lions were w/their Matsuzaka $$$?
They’ll be hard-pressed to out-do those state of the art toilets:

joeman……Shouldn’t Penn State just pound Northwestern ????/
Another interesting article is one just posted in the Times about conformity of Japanese baseball. I’d post a link if I knew how.
Is it worth 50 million to the Yankees to invest in raising their profile in Japan. That’s really the question. I’m sure Yankees merch sells like hotcakes in Japan (do they even have hotcakes in Japan) but does having a Japanese league player on the Yankees roster mean any kind of bump financially to the team.
Only Cashman and Levine know that. I’m sure there are numbers that prove out what Matsui & Irabu (to some extent) meant to the Yankees bottom line. If there is any kind of financial advantage to having a prominent Japanese player on the Yankees then I think they will go for it.
If there’s no financial advantage to this then I think they sit it out since 80-100 million is still a lot of money and Cashman can simply say if we invest 1/2 of that in South American talent we’ll be able to field an entire roster out of those prospects. Of course those prospects are usually teens who are more raw than Darvish is.
Darvish is more than buying his talent. You’re buying a foothold into a market that is passionate about baseball. That’s what the posting fee really is. The cost of buying media/fan heat in Japan. What that is worth only the front office really knows.
Colon was a life saver until he ran out of gas which was understandable from not pitching at all in 2010. A good recommendation by Tony Pena.
If he comes back at all in 2012 it would be a minor league deal with an invitation to ST and that’s pending on what Cashman does in the trade route, Darvish, a free agent move, and offering arbitration to Freddy Garcia.

In your opinion what should they do to improve the rotation?
Their stance might wind up being consistent with last years “financial constraint” policy and that would mean a no go to Darvish.
They don’t seem ready to spend big money unless in their minds it’s a “sure thing.”
Name one of the Japanese big money pitchers that has been worth it and I don’t mean revenue generated, I mean on the ballfield.
Ellsbury should win Comeback Award. Colon had a great first half, and was bad later. Maybe he got tired but the award is for the whole year.
Granderson should win 1 of the awards. His year was outstanding.
G. Love,
Yes….I would think that would factor into the decision. If the Yanks figure to get some of that posting money back through the bump the Japanese market might bring then that’s something to consider.
Verlander will get MVP.
All of the other players wash each other out without a clear cut favorite.

Against all Odds
Resign Freddie G., Bring Noesi out of camp in the rotation.
Give Joba a shot.
Above all be patient. A decent situation could present itself to obtain a quality pitcher.
Darvish is no guarantee to upgrade our rotation.
True he is not a guarantee we have seen hyped up pitchers stumble before. I’d like to see Joba get a shot but that won’t happen. I guess it depends on if the Yankees feel they can roll the dice for another yr. Do they have faith in Rothschild to get the most out of the rotation like he did in 2011.
