Just CC being CC

Good way to kick off the weekend, with Yankees ace CC Sabathia surprising a young baseball player on Anderson Cooper’s talk show. Dugan Smith is a 13-year-old who fought cancer through a rare surgery, and he wanted the surgery specifically to keep playing baseball.

I can’t quite figure out how to make the video appear here on the blog — seriously, most of the Internet confuses me — but you can check out some of the interview right here, and you can see Sabathia’s surprise appearance right here.

Dugan said he’s an Indians fan, and when he plays video games, he makes a trade so that Sabathia is back playing for Cleveland. Sabathia, though, showed up in his usual Yankees jersey.

Good work by the big man. He really is just as friendly as he seems, and he’s incredibly good in situations like this. Good stuff from CC.

That’s a good guy right there.

With a heart even bigger than his Frame.

    :)

  2. blake October 22nd, 2011 at 9:20 am

    I love CC….he’s going nowhere.

    Austinmac,

Yea I would think Chicago would like romine……maybe Romine and helps

  3. MTU October 22nd, 2011 at 9:25 am

    Blake-

GB said the WS have Flowers on the way so maybe they would not want Romine ?

Romine is a lot to give up for Danks for a one year rental.

Perhaps if a negotiating window is included ?

I think Romine is a part of the the Yankees future plans.

No problem moving Phelps, Mitchell, etc.

Maybe they could substitute Cervelli ?

  4. blake October 22nd, 2011 at 9:30 am

    MTU,

There are a lot of questions about whether Flowers can catch in the big leagues and he’s 26 tears old also. Romine is a lot to give up but I think the Yankees have depth there and Id probably do it.

  5. austinmac October 22nd, 2011 at 9:31 am

Flowers was described as a strike out machine with 38 in 110 at bats. Also, I am not sure he is good defensively.

  6. MTU October 22nd, 2011 at 9:32 am

    Blake-

I’m not so sure. Perhaps if I knew I could sign Danks to a longer term contract.

I think Romine for just a year of Danks would be a very bad move.

  7. RadioKev October 22nd, 2011 at 9:36 am

It seems that most agree that Romine will become a legitimate major league starting catcher. That’s a valuable prospect in a catcher weak market.

The Yankees have no incentive to move him, he’d likely be the heir to Russell Martin. If he goes for Danks the Yanks need to know he’ll give them an extension.

  8. austinmac October 22nd, 2011 at 9:37 am

I would trade Romine and Warren/Phelps for Danks in a heartbeat. Not sure if those pitchers truly bring much value.

  9. blake October 22nd, 2011 at 9:37 am

    MTU,

Understand…..but I think it depends on whether we think Romine is the Yanks future full time backstop…….

  10. MTU October 22nd, 2011 at 9:40 am

    Blake-

How about Hughes + for Danks.

Would you do that ? Would the WS ?

  11. RadioKev October 22nd, 2011 at 9:41 am

Since Montero isn’t a sure thing behind the plate, I imagine it would take a lot to move Romine at this point. Unless the Yankees feel comfortable with Martin for the next several years.

  12. yankee21 October 22nd, 2011 at 9:44 am

Danks is a good target. It seems he has the pedigree to handle NY.

I’d move Romine for him +1 of Phelps/Mitchell/Warren.

  13. 108 stitches October 22nd, 2011 at 9:44 am

I’m not interested in any more of A.J. Burnett’s supposed great stuff / good clubhouse guy talk. Too frustrating, gotten too old. Realizing that his wife dislikes air travel, I propose that he gets dealt near home to the Washington Nationals for LHRP Sean Burnett with the Yankees eating half of A.J.’s remaining 2 years. For good measure throw in David Phelps and a AAA outfielder.
This opens up a spot in the starting rotation for a John Danks and clears the way for Noesi and others to compete for a No. 5 rotation spot right out of spring training.

  14. Villa Nova-Ya October 22nd, 2011 at 9:50 am

Seems to me no one knows how a player will handle NY until he actually tries to play here.

What is Dank’s pedigree that make you think he can handle NY, and be worth the players that are being offered here for a short-term stay?

  15. RadioKev October 22nd, 2011 at 9:50 am

I’d still rather have AJ Burnett than half the other clowns we had pitching last decade. He is a good guy, he is (mostly) accountable, and he’s come up big in several post seasons starts.

That said, if the right deal came about..

  16. RadioKev October 22nd, 2011 at 9:51 am

NY pedigree, post season pedigree, all pretty nebulous stuff.

  17. blake October 22nd, 2011 at 9:52 am

    MTU,

It depends on the +…..but yes I would trade Hughes for Danks if not much else os involved. He’s got 1 more year of control than Danks.

    108,

Cashman really should make it a priority to see if there is a taker for AJ this winter……even if they have to eat some money…..my understanding is that his entire salary would come off as it pertains to the luxury tax as he would no longer be on their 40 man.

  18. yankee21 October 22nd, 2011 at 9:52 am

NY needs to make every attempt to move AJ. This is a guy with a plus 5 era, I don’t care if he is a good guy. He is one of the worst SP in the game over the last two seasons and he is expensive.

  19. yankee21 October 22nd, 2011 at 9:53 am

Villa, I like the way Danks competes when he doesn’t have his best stuff. Granted he didn’t have a great 2011, but he strikes me as a competitor that can elevate his game on the big stage,, I could be wrong of course,, but just a gut sense.

  20. yankee21 October 22nd, 2011 at 9:55 am

I don’t move Hughes just yet. I believe he is poised to come up big in 2012. I want him to do that in pinstripes.

  21. blake October 22nd, 2011 at 9:56 am

“What is Dank’s pedigree that make you think he can handle NY, and be worth the players that are being offered here for a short-term stay?”

Should the Yankees just forget making any deals for fear that players can’t handle NY? Unless its a situation like Greinke then I don’t see that as a factor…..Danks is coming from Chicago…..and a crazy clubhouse…..not SD or KC.

  22. MTU October 22nd, 2011 at 9:57 am

    Blake-

They’re both potential bounce back candidates.

    Similar in age.

We get another mid-rotation lefty. They get the potential 18 game winner.

I would include guys like Cervelli, Corban Joseph, Adams,Vasquez or one of our relievers not named D-Rob or Joba.

Maybe Thornton could be included too ?

  23. blake October 22nd, 2011 at 9:58 am

Danks is entering his prime age and his track record suggests that last season was the outlier……not vice versa. If he came to the Yanks and pitched the way he did in 08,09, and 10 then he’d make a strong run at 20 wins.

  24. yankee21 October 22nd, 2011 at 10:03 am

I like CC and he is a tremendous fit for the Yankees and is always doing good things for charity.

However, if he does opt out and his agent demands a king ransom to sign him, NY better damn well be prepared to move on. Part of that preparation is to be agressive on the trade and international market. This starts with targeting guys who have the potential to be mid-rotation starters or on their best days, shut down stuff.

Danks is one of those guys,, and Darvish is one of those guys. Cashman needs to address the risk of losing CC and make things happen.

  25. RadioKev October 22nd, 2011 at 10:04 am

Hughes for Danks would probably be a good trade for the Yanks, even though I would be reluctant to make the move…being a fan and all. It would be tough to see Hughes suceed on another team, but on paper it looks good.

  26. yankee21 October 22nd, 2011 at 10:04 am

By the way I am not saying either of these two guys can fill CC shoes. They would however help cover the void left in the rotation with an ace leaving.

  27. Yankee Trader October 22nd, 2011 at 10:07 am

    Good morning.

MTU- If you are still out there, it’s nice to see you back!

Wasn’t Tyler Flowers once in the Braves system?

If Buehrle goes elsewhere, that leaves Danks as their only lefty starter, unless the WS plan to move lefty Chris Sale back into the starting rotation.

And yes if the WS agreed to Romine plus one of Warren/Phelps/Mitchell/other or others, I’d do that trade. The Yankees are going to have to move some of those AAA pitchers this winter, I would think?

  28. Bronx Jeers October 22nd, 2011 at 10:08 am

Watch CC go all the way for this kid now. Imagine he opts- out and signs with the Indians.

He’s a secret agent for the “Make-A-Wish” foundation.

    YT-

Thanks. I’m still in the midst of some things but I’ll be around when I can.

    Got to walk the Mops.

Hope all is well in your world.

  30. Yankee Trader October 22nd, 2011 at 10:11 am

    yankee21-

I think the reluctance on the Yankees part, from the “RUMORS” will be the length of the contract. If there’s another team out there willing to go 7 years guaranteed at lets say 24-25M/year then it could be sayonara and hellow Darvish, who does speak English BTW.

  31. Villa Nova-Ya October 22nd, 2011 at 10:13 am

    Yankees21 -

    Thanks for your answer.

I don’t know a lot about Danks. And his name is here all day every day since at least the end of the ALDS.

    blake -

That’s just silly. I’m not suggesting any such thing. But I think it’s an interesting dynamic here; players are always being put in Column A (can handle NY) or Column B (wouldn’t handle NY) and I don’t know what factors into that for fans, especially since it’s something you really can’t know for sure until a guys actually gets here and either does or doesn’t handle NY, or the tougher competition in the AL East, or whatever.

If Danks is a guy who can keep his team in a game without having his good stuff, that’s a pretty good quality to have. Yankees could use a quality left-handed pitcher. But is Danks a “number 2″ guy? Is he worth giving up Romine for (because I think Romine may factor into the Yankees immediate future)?

  32. yankee21 October 22nd, 2011 at 10:15 am

no risk of Yankees putting in a high bid for Darvish and then playing hardball in hammering out a contract.. if Darvish wants too many year or too many dollars yankees walk away with no loss other than time….

  33. Yankee Trader October 22nd, 2011 at 10:19 am

I don’t think Danks was even a #2 on the WS. At one point he was behind Buehrle, Humber and probably Floyd last year.

If you want to focus on another lefty from the WS that might be worth giving up some players like Romine + AAA pitcher, perhaps a trade for lefty Chris Sale could be made. Are the WS in such dire financial straights with the burdensome Rios and Dunn contracts that they would want to deal , FA to be,Danks in this offseason, rather than waiting for the trade deadline?

  34. Red Robin October 22nd, 2011 at 10:22 am

    Too bad .

    C . C . still sucks in the postseason .

    Definitely not an Ace .

    Not even a # 1 .

  35. Yankee Trader October 22nd, 2011 at 10:23 am

Does anyone know when Darvish, if he even agrees to leaving Japan, would be posted? Also how long does the winning team have to iron out a contract, before an impasse would send that player back to Japan. Do they become FA’s only after playing a certain number of years in Japan, or only at the discretion of the team that owns them?

    Signed,
    Too Many Questions ! :)

  36. blake October 22nd, 2011 at 10:28 am

    MTU,

Yea we will just have to see…..I don’t want to trade Hughes because I feel like he’s still got a chance to be really good….but they are running out of time….he’s only years from FA

  37. blake October 22nd, 2011 at 10:30 am

    Villa,

Yea but seeing as how we don’t know until the get there I don’t see how that can factor into.decision making until there is a diagnosed condition like Greinke has.

  38. 108 stitches October 22nd, 2011 at 10:31 am

Reports say that Chris Sale will be stretched out in the spring to be a starter with Danks and Buehrle (or both) likely gone. In the case of Buehrle, he’s a free agent with a Type 2 status.

As for Phil Hughes, the Yankees are not ready to give up on him. If he goes to the Athletes Performance Institute in Phoenix and comes to Tampa in January with other early arrivals to get a head start with building up arm strength, he’ll figure prominently in the starting rotation in 2012.

  39. blake October 22nd, 2011 at 10:35 am

    Trader,

I think the posting period is sometime in Nov to sometime in Jan or Feb….I know that’s not very specific…..but the team that eons the bid has until the posting period is over to negotiate I believe.

  40. blake October 22nd, 2011 at 10:38 am

Sale, Peavy, Humber, Floyd. There is 4 starters without Buerle or Danks. I think they’ll move Danks because he’s only got a year and they probably can get a decent return for him. If they are wanting to trim payroll then that’s a logical spot as he will make around 8 million next year.

  41. Villa Nova-Ya October 22nd, 2011 at 10:38 am

    blake -

I agree. And I don’t know that it does factor in for the Yankees. It seems to be a factor among fans is all I’m saying.

And I think it’s interesting to find out why people think a particular player may or may not be able to cut the NY Mustard.

  42. Yankee Trader October 22nd, 2011 at 10:39 am

I mentioned that Chris Sale could go back to being a starter. He was terrific last year. Where have you heard that FA to be,Danks is likely gone? Wouldn’t the WS, if Buehrle leaves, likely keep Danks until the trading deadlne, before they make a decision to trade him?

  43. blake October 22nd, 2011 at 10:42 am

Actually I was wrong. Posting is from Nov 1 to March 1 and you have 30 days to negotiate after a bid is accepted.

Nothing like a feel good story to start the day. Dugan was beaming from ear to ear. Awesome !

  45. blake October 22nd, 2011 at 10:43 am

    Villa,

I think most of that is just fan speak…..people were suggesting last night that Pujols couldn’t cut it in NY……..puh- lease

  46. Yankee Trader October 22nd, 2011 at 10:53 am

Blake I found this at the same time on posting.

A Japanese player who wishes to leave his Japanese club and move to MLB must notify his club. The club can then agree to place the player on a posting list with any other players on any other Japanese clubs who also wish to move. Nothing prevents a MLB club from discussing the possibility of posting a player with the player’s agent before the posting period closes (November to March).

The posting list is then provided to the Commissioner of MLB who notifies all MLB clubs of the posted players. Interested MLB clubs submit a sealed bid to the Commissioner’s Office within four days. The Commissioner opens the bids and notifies the Japanese club of the amount of the highest bid, but not who the bidding club is. The Japanese club has 30 days to accept or reject the bid and the bid is not subject to negotiation.

If rejected, the Japanese club retains the player’s rights and the player cannot be posted again until the next off-season. If the bid is accepted, the Japanese player must agree to a playing contract with the winning bidder by the close of the posting period. Only at that time does the Japanese club receive the winning funds. If the player cannot agree to a playing contract, his rights revert back to his Japanese club and no payment is made.

  47. Yankee Trader October 22nd, 2011 at 11:02 am

If the bid is accepted, the Japanese player must agree to a playing contract with the winning bidder by the close of the posting period.

In the case of Darvish if he notifies his club, let’s say sometime in November, 5 days after the WS when players can file for FA, when the posted list is bid on the Yankees if they win the bid, would have until sometime in March, well after their roster is completed, to decide if they still need Darvish, and if they want to play hardball in contract $$$ and length with the player or send him back to Japan.

  48. pat October 22nd, 2011 at 11:12 am

The conversation wasn’t that Pujols couldn’t cut it in NY.

It was things that are accepted from Pujols in St. Louis wouldn’t cut it in NY.

In most cases, players have to adapt to NY because NY isn’t going to adapt to them.

  49. 108 stitches October 22nd, 2011 at 11:18 am

    Trader :

•If the White Sox stick to their plan of cutting their $127MM payroll, with $89MM already tied to eleven players, it’s likely that John Danks or Mark Buehrle won’t start next season with the team, writes MLB.com’s Scott Merkin. The arbitration-eligible Danks would be one of the team’s greater trade chips.

    per MLBTR

  50. Villa Nova-Ya October 22nd, 2011 at 11:26 am

  51. Bret The Hitman October 22nd, 2011 at 11:27 am

    MTU,

I think you’re on the right track. I would offer Hughes + Warren + Cervelli/Joseph.

It’s not like Hughes is cheap for 5 more years.

He’s logged 4 years of service time already according to baseball-reference. Danks is a far more proven pitcher so one extra year of Hughes probably won’t cut it for the White Sox. That’s why an offer based on Hughes would have to include more talent going to ChiTown…as you stated.

  52. Yankee Trader October 22nd, 2011 at 11:28 am

    108 stitches-

Thanks for the info. If the WS want the Yankees to also take on the remaining salaries of Crain or Thornton, would you interested then in getting Danks?

    Thornton remaining salary:

    Crain remaining salary:
    12:$4.5M, 13:$4.5M

Jose Contreras should’ve pitched more in that Marlins series. He was effectively wild against them. Torre and Stottlemeyer were too paranoid that he was going to walk the park but Florida hitters were undisciplined and young for the most part. I’ve always felt Torre let us down in that series by avoiding Contreras. They gave Wells a start with a bad back over Contreras in one of those games if I recall.

If by chance Cashman dealt for Danks you can add a David Phelps (for example) to the group of Sale, Peavy, Humber, and Floyd plus whoever competes from the White Sox farm sysyem.

  57. Bret The Hitman October 22nd, 2011 at 11:37 am

I agree with Radiokev about Romine. If he can outhit Cervelli he’s too valuable to trade for one year of Danks, especially with his defense behind the plate. I don’t make that move. It’s tempting but I think there are other ways to facilitate a deal for Danks given the depth on the farm. I’d even consider moving Gardner for Danks if the Yankees can line up a deal for Shin Soo Choo.

If CC signs elsewhere, I’d be interested in Darvish at 100 million or whatever they’re projecting. Otherwise, pass.

Bret, 108 stitches, Blake, and everyone.

Looking at it from the WS prospective, what do the WS need before spring training, that would entice them to trade Danks before the trading deadline?

Unloading the salary. They are nowhere near luxury tax concerns so it would be to avoid a raise thru arbitration.

Looking at the performance at each position, besides unloading the virtually untradeable contracts of Dunn and Rios, it appears they could us some help mostly at 3rd, where Morel is, and possibly At 2nd where Beckham. who was terrible last year is.

Therefore make a trade proposal based on WS needs from the Yankees that will get a trade for Danks accomplished.

    Trader,

OK. I hear ya. It seems the WS need help at catcher, 2b and 3b.

    Hughes + Cervelli + Joseph + Laird.

    or Hughes + Nunez

  63. MTU October 22nd, 2011 at 11:46 am

    Bret-

My gut feel FWIW is that both Hughes and Danks will have bounce back years, i.e. both will be good.

I Really don’t particularly want to trade Hughes for that reason but I wouldn’t mind having another lefty who can pretty much do the same thing as Hughes might (or better) and is close in age.

I don’t think Hughes for Danks straight up would work hence the other peice or two.

It might be a very good deal for both sides.

Each guy with potential and a chance to make a fresh start.

    IMO it’s worthy of consideration.

    Good walk with the mops?

What if the White Sox[Villa] not WS want Noesi instead of Hughes in that package for Danks?

  69. Bret The Hitman October 22nd, 2011 at 11:58 am

    MTU,

Danks and Hughes are fairly comparable in talent IMHO but one is a lefty and he’s also more proven. As much as some fans want to cling to Hughes and hope for a rebound, he’s 2 years away from free agency himself. He’s really not in the long-term plans of the rotation no more than Joba is in the long term plans for the bullpen. These guys are most likely on their way out.

I don’t think the White Sox would want 2 years of Hughes for 1 year of Danks mostly because they can get a better return on the trade market for Danks. They can use Danks to fill needs long term.

Danks might even cost Hughes + Nunez + Cervelli.

    I still do that deal.

    YT-

    Yes. Always is.

I don’t think the WS would prefer Noesi over Hughes but if they did I certainly would make the trade.

Noesi may be very good but Danks is already proven over several seasons.

Hughes has already shown he can win a lot of games if he is healthy.

I was expecting the kids to be pets. Silly me.

Now that you’re following him, tweet and ask him about Blonde 1.

Off to drop off the soccer crew and mortgage the future- we have a Whole Foods local now.

I know the Danks family as my son played against John’s younger brother. Their Dad played basketball at UT. They are all class people, and I have no doubt Danks could adapt to NY with no problems.

I would try to hold onto Hughes as I think he can bounce back. He alone, after last year, wouldn’t get Danks, I don’t think.

    Bret-

I wouldn’t include Nunez. The Yankees need him for insurance.

If they wanted a ss I’d offer Pena.

In fact, they can have Pena and Cervelli.

They might also want another young BP arm.

Maybe someone like Kontos thrown in. GB says Mitchell is a good GB pitcher. Maybe him plus Hughes.

I’m sure a combination could be worked out if they want to get something done.
